The practical choices are a tunnel or relay service, Unturned’s Server Code direct-join feature, a mesh VPN that puts every player on one virtual network, or managed hosting. A normal home-hosted Internet server still needs inbound reachability; these methods provide it in different ways.

What port forwarding normally does
A dedicated Unturned server running on a home computer listens on a local address. Players outside your home network cannot normally start a connection to that private address. Port forwarding adds a router rule that sends incoming traffic to the computer running the server.

The Unturned Wiki’s dedicated-server guide states, “To host a dedicated server, port forwarding is required.” The Unturned 3 Knowledgebase describes the same baseline: “When hosting a server on a home network port forwarding is required to direct traffic to the host computer.” Those statements describe ordinary direct hosting, not every possible way to publish a server.
If you cannot administer the router, your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, or you simply do not want to expose a home-router rule, you need another path for inbound traffic. A tunnel can carry players’ connections through a relay to your local server. A mesh VPN gives each participant a private virtual address. Server Codes avoid conventional address entry for invited players. Managed hosting moves the server to a machine that already has public reachability.

Choose the method that fits your group

Before choosing, compare six practical questions: must every friend install software; does the method carry Unturned’s UDP traffic; will the server appear in the public list; where is the relay or data center; is there a recurring charge; and do you need to keep full control of mods and configuration? Home-IP privacy and the amount of maintenance matter as well.
Install the dedicated server first
Connectivity tools do not replace the Unturned server itself. Install and configure a dedicated server on the machine that will run the game process, then attach the no-forwarding method to that local endpoint.

- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s package instructions or Valve’s supported installation method.
- Start SteamCMD and log in anonymously:
login anonymous- Install or update the Unturned Dedicated Server app (App ID
1110390) in a directory you choose. The documented Linux workflow uses theU3DSinstallation directory:
app_update 1110390
quitRun the command again whenever you intentionally update the server. Updates can alter configuration or listing behavior, so review the current Unturned hosting documentation after a major update rather than assuming an older setup still applies.
Windows
On Windows, use the standalone dedicated-server application or the server files installed through the Unturned client. Keep the server in a folder with enough disk space for the game, logs, workshop content and backups. The exact launcher layout differs between installations, but the next step is the same: create a profile and launch it as an Internet server.
Create an Internet server profile
The documented Linux launch form is:
./ServerHelper.sh +InternetServer/MyServerHere, MyServer is the profile name. Use your actual profile name if you choose another. On Windows, select or launch the equivalent Internet-server profile through the standalone application or the client-side server files.

An Internet profile is important because it tells Unturned that this is not merely a local or LAN session. Let the first launch finish so the profile’s folders and configuration files are generated. Stop the server cleanly before editing files, then start it again after changes.

Configure authentication and listing before publishing
Review the profile’s server files for the settings that control commands, authentication and listing. Current hosting rules apply, and the Unturned knowledgebase references a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for server authentication. Follow the current token procedure for your account and server rather than copying an old configuration from a forum post.
Listing rules are version-sensitive. One current reference records that anonymous servers are hidden from the Internet list after version 3.21.31.0 and points to GSLT authentication. Treat that as a rule to verify against the current documentation when you publish: a server can be reachable by a direct endpoint or code while still failing to appear in ordinary public browsing.
- Use a distinct profile for each server so configuration and logs do not overlap.
- Keep credentials and tokens out of screenshots, public posts and shared configuration archives.
- Check the server console for successful startup, profile loading and authentication messages before troubleshooting the network path.
- Record the local address and UDP listening port shown by your server configuration; the tunnel or VPN must target that exact endpoint.
Method 1: Use a Playit.gg tunnel
Unturned’s documentation says a third-party service such as playit.gg can tunnel connections to a server instead of using port forwarding. Playit describes itself as “a global proxy that lets you host a server without port forwarding.” Its current product information lists Unturned as supported but requiring Premium, so do not assume this route is free.
How the tunnel works
You run the Playit agent on the same computer as the Unturned server. The agent makes an outbound connection to the relay service, which gives you a public endpoint. A friend connects to that endpoint; the relay carries the traffic back through the agent to the local Unturned UDP endpoint. Your router does not need an inbound forwarding rule because the host initiated the outbound agent connection.

Setup sequence
- Install the Playit agent on the server computer and sign in or associate it with your Playit account as instructed by the service.
- Start the Unturned profile and confirm the server is listening on its configured local UDP address and port.
- In the Playit control panel, create a tunnel for the Unturned endpoint. Select the UDP-capable option and enter the same local address and port that Unturned uses.
- Start the agent and wait for the tunnel to show an active public endpoint.
- Give friends the endpoint exactly as Playit displays it. Do not substitute your private LAN address.
- Have one player test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A second device on the same home Wi-Fi is not a valid outside test.
The endpoint and relay location are service-assigned and can change with account, plan or configuration. Relay geography can affect latency, but no authoritative comparative latency, capacity or uptime figures are established here. Playit’s Premium requirement, supported protocols, pricing and relay locations can also change; verify those details on the provider’s current product page before committing.
When a tunnel is the right choice
- You want friends on ordinary internet connections to join without installing a network client.
- You need to keep your home IP out of the address you share with players.
- You can keep both the Unturned process and the tunnel agent running on the host.
- You accept a relay dependency and, for Unturned on Playit’s current listing, a Premium plan.
Method 2: Let friends join with an Unturned Server Code
Unturned’s Server Codes feature is designed for direct invitations. The documentation says friends can enter a Server Code in Connect Directly “without you needing to port forward.” This is different from publishing a conventional public IP address: the code is the join mechanism.
Use the code
- Start the Internet server profile and wait until it has loaded.
- Look in the server console for the Server Code generated after loading.
- Copy the code accurately and send it only to the people you want to invite.
- Each friend opens Unturned’s server browser, chooses Connect Directly, enters the code and attempts to join.
- If you restart the server or generate a new code, send the replacement code to your group.
Server Codes are most useful for a private group that does not need strangers to find the server in the public list. They do not automatically solve every listing requirement, and they do not provide the same public endpoint model as a relay tunnel.
Method 3: Use a mesh VPN
A mesh VPN creates a private virtual network. The host and every player install the same VPN client, authenticate, and join one network. Players then connect to the host’s virtual network address instead of its home LAN address.

- Create a private network in the VPN service and invite each player.
- Install the client on the server computer and every player’s computer.
- Confirm that all members appear as connected and authorized.
- Start Unturned and note the server’s local UDP port.
- Have players connect to the host’s VPN address and that port, using the game’s direct-connect workflow where appropriate.
This approach usually avoids an inbound router rule, but the software requirement applies to every participant. It is a poor fit for a large public server because strangers would need to join your private network first. It can be attractive for a small, trusted group that values private addressing over one-click public access.

Method 4: Rent managed hosting
Managed hosting moves the dedicated server to a provider’s internet-connected machine. You do not need to alter your home router, and players generally receive a provider address or listing entry. In exchange, you pay a recurring fee and manage the server through the provider’s panel rather than your own physical computer.
This is the cleanest option when you need 24/7 uptime, cannot leave a home PC running, or do not want to maintain SteamCMD, updates and server files. Confirm in the plan documentation that Unturned, UDP traffic, workshop content, your desired player capacity and your mod configuration are supported. No specific provider price or uptime figure is established here, so compare current offers directly instead of relying on an old price list.
Test the connection correctly
Do not treat a successful local connection as proof that your no-forwarding setup works. Test from a machine outside the host’s local network.
- Start the Unturned server and confirm the profile is fully loaded.
- Start the tunnel agent or ensure the VPN members are online, depending on your method.
- Use a second computer on a different internet connection. A mobile hotspot is sufficient for a basic reachability check.
- Join using the relay endpoint, Server Code or VPN address required by your chosen method.
- Check the server console while joining. A connection attempt should produce activity; if the console is silent, the traffic is not reaching Unturned.
- Only after this test should you distribute the address or code to the full group.
The available documentation provides procedures, not a benchmark. It does not establish a guaranteed latency, player capacity or uptime result for any method.

The tunnel is online but nobody can join
- Verify that the tunnel targets UDP, not only TCP.
- Compare the tunnel’s destination address and port with the values in the Unturned profile.
- Check that the Unturned process is still running and that the profile did not crash during startup.
- Temporarily review the host operating system’s firewall logs. Permit the server process or its configured UDP port as appropriate for your system.
- Test from a genuinely external network and read the server console for an incoming attempt.
Friends can connect by code but not through the public list
Direct joining and public discovery are separate functions. Recheck current listing rules, GSLT authentication and the profile’s listing settings. The version-sensitive note about anonymous servers being hidden after 3.21.31.0 is especially relevant when the server is reachable but absent from the browser.

The Server Code no longer works
Start the server again and read the newly generated code in the console. Send the current value to friends rather than reusing an old message. Keep the code private if the server is intended for invited players.
The VPN method works for some players only
- Confirm every player is signed in to the same virtual network.
- Check that the host is authorized to accept each member.
- Have players use the host’s VPN address, not the host’s ordinary LAN address.
- Verify that local firewalls allow the Unturned UDP port on the VPN interface.
Operational and privacy considerations
- Keep the host running: a home server and its tunnel are unavailable whenever the computer sleeps, shuts down or loses internet access.
- Protect the endpoint: a relay hides the home IP from the address you share, while a mesh VPN exposes a private network identity only to its members. Neither removes the need for account security.
- Back up the profile: copy configuration, saves and relevant logs before changing versions or installing mods.
- Update deliberately: apply Unturned, SteamCMD, tunnel-agent and VPN updates during a maintenance window, then repeat the external join test.
- Moderate access: Server Codes and relay endpoints can be forwarded by anyone who receives them. Rotate access by changing the code or tunnel details when necessary.
A practical decision guide
Choose a Playit tunnel when…
You want ordinary friends to join without installing a VPN client, can run an agent beside Unturned, and accept the provider’s current Premium requirement for Unturned.
Choose Server Codes when…
Your audience is a known group of friends and direct invitations matter more than public discovery. This is the least complicated player-side experience when the code workflow meets your needs.
Choose a mesh VPN when…
Everyone is comfortable installing software and you prefer a private network over a public endpoint. It is suited to small, trusted groups rather than an open community.
Choose managed hosting when…
You need a server that stays online without your home computer, or you want someone else to handle the public network and much of the maintenance. Budget for a recurring charge and verify mod, UDP and capacity support before ordering.
Bottom line
You do not need router access to host Unturned for friends. Install the dedicated server, launch an Internet profile, configure current authentication and listing requirements, then provide reachability through a tunnel, Server Code, mesh VPN or managed host. For a public-style endpoint, a tunnel is the closest substitute for port forwarding; for a private invitation-only group, Server Codes are usually simpler. Whichever route you choose, validate it from outside your home network before announcing the server.
