A custom hostname such as play.example.com makes a Minecraft server easier to remember, but DNS only maps that name to an endpoint. It does not open a router port, change a firewall rule, or make Java and Bedrock use the same connection method. Set up the DNS record for your server, add a Java SRV record when a non-default port is involved, enter the port separately for Bedrock, and test from outside your home network before sharing the address.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start by identifying the edition, address and port
Write down three values before editing DNS:
- The edition players use: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- The endpoint currently used by the server: a public IPv4 address, public IPv6 address, or a hostname supplied by a hosting provider.
- The game port on which the server listens.
The edition matters because Java can use a DNS SRV record to discover a custom port, while Bedrock players enter the hostname and port in separate fields. A name that works in a Java client is not automatically a valid Bedrock setup.

| Edition | Documented default port | How players connect with a custom hostname | What must be reachable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 25565 |
Use an A or AAAA record for the hostname. If the server uses another port, add an _minecraft._tcp SRV record. |
The Java server endpoint and its configured port. |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | 19132 for server-port; 19133 for server-portv6 in Microsoft’s documented examples |
Publish the hostname, then have players enter that hostname and the configured port in Bedrock’s separate address and port fields. | The configured Bedrock port, router forwarding and firewall rule. |
The Java value of 25565 and the Bedrock values of 19132 and 19133 are defaults, not guarantees about your installation. Read the server configuration and use the actual listening port when creating records and forwarding traffic.
Choose the hostname you will publish
A subdomain keeps the game address separate from a website or other services on the same domain. Common choices include play.example.com, mc.example.com and survival.example.com. In a DNS control panel, the record name is usually just play; the provider appends example.com to form the full hostname.

Use one stable label in announcements, server lists and configuration files. Changing the label later means updating every player’s saved server entry. If you operate multiple servers, give each one a distinct label rather than trying to make one hostname identify several ports.
Create the base DNS record
Publish a record in the authoritative DNS zone for your domain. Select the record type that matches the endpoint your host actually provides.
| Record | Use it when | Value | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | The server has a public IPv4 address. | The server’s public IPv4 address. | It maps the name only; it does not configure the router or firewall. |
| AAAA | The server is reachable over IPv6. | The server’s public IPv6 address. | Publish it only when IPv6 connectivity is configured end to end. |
| CNAME | Your host exposes the server through another hostname. | The hostname supplied by that host. | It points to a hostname, not directly to an IP address, and the target must remain valid. |
- Open the DNS management page for the domain.
- Add an
A,AAAAorCNAMErecord according to the endpoint. - Enter the subdomain label, such as
play, in the name field. - Enter the exact public address or provider hostname in the value or target field.
- Save the record, then confirm that the panel shows the intended name and value.
If both IPv4 and IPv6 are genuinely available, you can publish both A and AAAA records. If an AAAA record points to an address that is not reachable, some clients may try IPv6 first and fail even though IPv4 works. Do not add an address merely because your provider offers the field.
Java Edition on the default port
When a Java server listens on 25565, an A record, an AAAA record, or both is normally sufficient. Players enter play.example.com in the Java multiplayer server address field; no port suffix is needed.

The DNS name still has to resolve to the endpoint that accepts 25565. If the server is hosted at home, the router must forward that port to the server’s fixed LAN address and the operating-system firewall must allow it. If a managed host gives you a hostname rather than an IP, use a CNAME when the host’s instructions call for one.
Java Edition with a non-default port: add an SRV record
Java’s SRV mechanism lets players omit a custom port from the address they type. Suppose the public name is play.example.com, the server listens on a port other than 25565, and the A or AAAA record is on node.example.com. The SRV record tells the Java client which port and target to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Keep the base A or AAAA record for the hostname that represents the server endpoint. In the example, that could be
node.example.com. If your provider expects the base record onplay, follow that provider’s naming model and ensure the SRV target ultimately resolves. - In DNS management, choose an
SRVrecord. - Set the service and protocol name to
_minecraft._tcp. The complete record name for the public subdomain is_minecraft._tcp.play.example.com. - Enter the server’s actual Java port in the port field.
- Enter the hostname carrying the A or AAAA record in the target field. Use a hostname, not a raw IP address.
- Fill in priority and weight as required by the DNS provider’s SRV form. If the panel separates service, protocol, name, priority, weight, port and target, place each value in its matching field rather than typing the entire record into one box.
- Save the record and verify the fully qualified name shown by the provider.
Players can then enter play.example.com without typing the custom port. The SRV record does not replace the base endpoint record: the target must resolve, and the server, router and firewall must still accept the selected port.
If the server returns to 25565, remove or update the SRV record so it does not advertise an obsolete port. A stale SRV record can make a name appear to point somewhere different from the A or AAAA record a player inspects.

Bedrock Edition: keep the port in the connection details
Do not use Java’s SRV procedure as a Bedrock setup. Bedrock players enter a server address and a port separately. Publish an A, AAAA or CNAME record for the hostname, then give players the exact Bedrock port configured on the server.
- Confirm the values in the Bedrock server configuration, including
server-portand, where IPv6 is used,server-portv6. - Create the base DNS record for
play.example.comusing the server’s reachable IPv4, IPv6 or provider hostname. - Allow the configured Bedrock port in the host firewall and forward it from the router to the correct LAN address if the server is at home.
- In the Bedrock client, add the server and enter
play.example.comin the address field and the configured number in the port field. - Test from a network that is not the server’s local network.
Microsoft’s documented Bedrock Dedicated Server examples use 19132 for server-port and 19133 for server-portv6. Your installation may use different values; the configured values are the ones that belong in the client, firewall and forwarding rule.
Home-hosted servers: DNS is only one part of the path
A home server has a chain of dependencies that a DNS record cannot change:
- Give the Minecraft machine a fixed LAN address, or reserve its address in the router, so a forwarding rule does not follow a changing internal address.
- Forward the server’s configured game port from the router to that LAN address. Use the protocol and port required by the edition and server software.
- Create an operating-system firewall rule that allows the game traffic on the intended interface and port.
- Start the server and confirm it is listening on the configured port before testing the public name.
- Publish the DNS record only after the endpoint is ready, then test from an external connection.
Minecraft Help warns that self-hosting requires changing your home network configuration and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. It also strongly urges operators not to give out a public IP as advertising because exposing it publicly is a security risk to the home network. A custom hostname does not hide the origin address from DNS lookups when it points directly to that address.

Use a managed host or an appropriate proxy or tunnel when exposing a residential endpoint is unacceptable. A proxy or tunnel changes the network design; it does not mean that every DNS proxy can carry Minecraft traffic.

Managed hosts commonly provide either a public IP address, a hostname, or a connection endpoint with a non-default port. Follow the host’s required record type: use A or AAAA for an address, or CNAME when the host specifically exposes a hostname for that purpose.
Some DNS providers offer a proxy in front of DNS records. DNS resolution and traffic proxying are separate functions. A record can resolve correctly while a provider proxy rejects or fails to carry the Minecraft protocol. In Cloudflare’s DNS controls, verify whether the selected proxy mode supports the game traffic; when it does not, use DNS-only mode for the Minecraft record. The exact visual control varies by provider, so check the provider’s current DNS documentation rather than assuming that a resolved name proves that a game connection will pass through the proxy.
For a tunnel or application proxy, use the hostname and port supplied by that service and confirm that it supports the edition and protocol your players use. Do not add a Java SRV record to a Bedrock-only endpoint, and do not assume a tunnel designed for web traffic accepts Minecraft connections.

Verify DNS and the actual game connection
Check each layer separately. Testing only the DNS name can conceal a closed port; testing only from inside the home network can conceal router or ISP behavior.

- Check the A record. Query
play.example.comwith a DNS lookup tool and confirm that the returned IPv4 address is the intended endpoint. - Check the AAAA record, if published. Confirm that the returned IPv6 address belongs to the server and is reachable through the configured network.
- Check the Java SRV record, when used. Query
_minecraft._tcp.play.example.comand verify the returned target and port. The target should resolve through its A or AAAA record. - Check the listener. On the server, confirm that Minecraft is running on the same port advertised in DNS or supplied to Bedrock players.
- Check forwarding and firewall rules. Ensure the router sends traffic to the current LAN address and that the host firewall allows the matching port and protocol.
- Test externally. Use the actual Java or Bedrock client from a different network, such as a mobile connection or another location. For Java, enter only the hostname when SRV is configured; for Bedrock, enter the hostname and port in their separate fields.
A successful DNS lookup proves only that the name resolves. A successful game login confirms the complete path from client to server.
Diagnose the common failure patterns
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The hostname does not resolve. | The record is in the wrong DNS zone, the name was entered incorrectly, or the value is invalid. | Inspect the authoritative zone, verify the complete hostname and query the A, AAAA or CNAME record directly. |
| Java connects only when the port is typed. | The SRV record is absent, named incorrectly, points to the wrong target, or advertises the wrong port. | Query _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com; confirm service, protocol, target and port, then test the target hostname. |
| Java works but Bedrock fails. | Bedrock is being given a Java-style SRV setup, the Bedrock port is missing, or the wrong protocol/port is forwarded. | Enter the hostname and port separately in Bedrock and compare that port with server-port or server-portv6, the firewall and the router. |
| The name resolves, but no client can join. | The server is stopped, the listener uses another port, the firewall blocks traffic, or the router forwards to the wrong LAN machine. | Check the server console, listening port, firewall rule and current internal address. |
| It works inside the house but not externally. | The local test may be using a different path; public forwarding, firewall access or the public endpoint is not functioning. | Test from an external network and validate the public address, forwarding rule and ISP/router configuration. |
| DNS resolves but a provider proxy connection fails. | The proxy resolves the name but does not carry Minecraft traffic. | Switch the record to the provider’s DNS-only mode when appropriate, or use a Minecraft-capable proxy or tunnel. |
| Some players fail while others connect. | An unreachable AAAA record, inconsistent endpoint records or edition-specific port differences may be involved. | Compare IPv4 and IPv6 results, remove an unusable address, and confirm that all players are using the correct edition and port. |
Choose the simplest design that meets your risk tolerance
| Design | Best fit | Records and connection details | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home server, Java on 25565 | Operators who control their router and accept exposing a residential endpoint. | A or AAAA for the subdomain; players use the hostname. | Requires forwarding and firewall work and exposes a public home endpoint. |
| Home server, Java on another port | Java operators who need a custom listening port. | Base A/AAAA plus _minecraft._tcp SRV; players use the hostname without the port. |
More DNS fields must stay synchronized with the server and forwarding rule. |
| Home server, Bedrock | Bedrock operators who can configure their network safely. | A/AAAA or CNAME; players enter the hostname and port separately. | SRV does not remove the need to distribute the port. |
| Managed host | Operators who do not want to alter a home router. | Use the host’s supplied IP or hostname and its required A, AAAA or CNAME setup. | You depend on the host’s endpoint and connection instructions. |
| DNS-only record | Direct connections where the endpoint itself should receive Minecraft traffic. | A, AAAA or CNAME, plus Java SRV when applicable. | The origin endpoint remains exposed through DNS. |
| Proxy or tunnel | Operators who need an intermediary instead of publishing a residential origin directly. | Use the intermediary’s hostname and port; verify Minecraft protocol support before publishing. | Additional service configuration and compatibility checks are required. |
Operational checklist before sharing the address
- The hostname label is spelled consistently everywhere.
- The A, AAAA or CNAME value matches the current endpoint.
- Any Java SRV record is named
_minecraft._tcp.<subdomain>, points to a resolving hostname and contains the actual non-default port. - Bedrock players have the port in addition to the hostname.
- The server is listening on the intended port.
- The router forwards that port to the correct fixed LAN address, when home-hosted.
- The operating-system firewall permits the required traffic.
- Any DNS proxy is confirmed to carry Minecraft traffic, or the record is set to DNS-only.
- An external Java or Bedrock client has completed a real connection test.
Once those checks pass, play.example.com is a usable public address rather than merely a name that happens to appear in a DNS lookup. Keep the DNS records, server configuration, router rule and player instructions aligned whenever the host, edition or port changes.
