Yes, one server can host multiple domains on different ports. Point every domain’s A or AAAA record to the server’s IP, then route traffic either by exposing separate listener ports or by putting a reverse proxy on ports 80 and 443. DNS maps names to IP addresses; the web server or proxy chooses the TCP port and the site that receives the request.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What “different ports” actually means
A domain name does not contain a TCP port in its DNS record. An A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address, while an AAAA record maps it to an IPv6 address. Common DNS records do not tell a browser to use port 8080, 8443, or any other application port.

The port is selected after the client reaches the server. A browser normally connects to TCP 80 for HTTP and TCP 443 for HTTPS. A non-standard URL must include the port, for example https://example.org:8443. The service listening on that address and port then decides which virtual host should answer.
Apache describes this as virtual hosting: more than one website runs on a single machine. Its IP-based form uses an address and port combination; its name-based form uses the hostname supplied in the HTTP request. NGINX follows the same basic sequence: first choose a listening socket, then select a server block using the request’s Host header and the configured server_name.

Two designs for multiple domains
Direct port binding
Each public service listens on its own port. One domain might use standard HTTPS on 443, while another is reached at https://example.org:8443. The port is visible in bookmarks, links, logs, and browser address bars.
- Advantages: fewer proxy rules and a straightforward mapping between a port and a service.
- Costs: every chosen port must be exposed, each public service needs its own TLS configuration if it uses HTTPS, and users must remember non-standard ports.
- Good fit: internal tools, temporary testing, development sites, or low-risk services where a port in the URL is acceptable.
Reverse proxy on ports 80 and 443
A single front-end proxy accepts normal HTTP and HTTPS traffic. It examines the hostname, terminates TLS when configured to do so, and forwards the request to an application on an internal port such as 3000, 8080, or 9000.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Advantages: clean URLs, one controlled public entry point, centralized certificates, and the ability to keep application ports on loopback or a private network.
- Costs: additional proxy configuration and another component to monitor.
- Good fit: public websites, APIs, game dashboards, and multiple production applications on one VPS or dedicated server.
For most public multi-domain deployments, the reverse-proxy design is the safer and more conventional choice.
Recommended layout
example.com ─┐
example.org ─┼─ DNS A/AAAA → public IP → firewall → proxy :443
api.example ─┘ ├─ example.com app :3000
├─ example.org app :8080
└─ api.example app :9000
In this arrangement, outside users never need to know the backend ports. The applications can bind to 127.0.0.1 or a private interface, while the proxy is the only service accepting public web traffic.
Prerequisites before you configure a virtual host
- Control of authoritative DNS for every domain or subdomain.
- A stable public IPv4 address, an IPv6 address if you intend to serve IPv6, or both.
- A web server or reverse proxy installed on the machine.
- A separate document root or application process for each site.
- Firewall and upstream security-group access to the ports you deliberately expose.
- TLS certificates covering each HTTPS hostname at the component that terminates HTTPS.
Virtual-host files alone do not create DNS records. Apache’s documentation explicitly warns that creating virtual hosts does not magically create DNS entries. The names must resolve to the server before an outside client can reach the intended listener.
Direct-port hosting with Apache
Apache requires a Listen directive for every local port and a matching <VirtualHost address:port> block. This example puts one site on port 80 and another on port 8080:

ServerName www.example.com
DocumentRoot /srv/www/example-com
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *:8080>
ServerName www.example.org
DocumentRoot /srv/www/example-org
</VirtualHost>
Users reach the first site at http://www.example.com and the second at http://www.example.org:8080. If you use HTTPS on the non-standard port, configure TLS for that virtual host and use a URL such as https://www.example.org:8443.
Use an explicit address instead of * when the machine has multiple IP addresses and you need strict separation. Apache treats each address-and-port pair as a distinct virtual-hosting endpoint. Do not configure two services to claim the same IP and port; only one process can normally bind that socket.
After adding the configuration, validate the syntax with the Apache configuration test available on your operating system, reload Apache without stopping active connections, and verify that the process is listening on every intended port. The exact service-management command differs by distribution, so use the command supplied by that distribution’s package.
Direct-port hosting with NGINX
NGINX uses a listen directive for the socket and server_name for hostname matching. A direct-port arrangement can place separate sites on different listeners:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteserver {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
root /srv/www/example-com;
}
server {
listen 8080;
server_name example.org;
root /srv/www/example-org;
}
The request must arrive on the port named by the listen directive before NGINX can evaluate the corresponding hostname. If a hostname does not match any configured name on that listening socket, NGINX sends the request to the default server for that port. This is why a healthy listener can still appear to serve the wrong website: the request may be landing in the default block.
Reverse-proxy hosting with NGINX
With a reverse proxy, both public domains can use ordinary HTTPS URLs while their applications remain on different internal ports:

Here, example.com is forwarded to the service on port 3000 and example.org to the service on port 8080. The certificate paths are examples: install certificates that actually cover the requested names, and protect their private keys.
Add a separate port-80 server block when you want HTTP redirected to HTTPS. Keep the application processes bound to loopback or a private address unless they must be reachable directly. If an application generates absolute URLs, redirects, or secure-cookie decisions, pass and correctly interpret the Host and X-Forwarded-Proto headers.
Apache as a reverse proxy
Apache can also provide the front end. The important design is the same: one virtual host per public hostname on the shared HTTPS listener, with proxy rules forwarding to different internal services. Choose Apache or NGINX according to your team’s existing expertise, package conventions, and support practices. Both can implement hostname-and-port routing; neither removes the need for correct DNS, firewall, and certificate configuration.
DNS, firewall, and TLS setup sequence
- Create DNS records. Add an A record for each hostname pointing to the server’s public IPv4 address. Add an AAAA record when the service is intentionally available over IPv6. Do not try to put
:8080or another port into the record value. - Check resolution. After authoritative DNS changes, allow for resolver caches to expire. Query each name with a resolver tool such as
digand confirm that it returns the intended address. - Start the listeners. Confirm that Apache or NGINX is bound to every planned public port. For a reverse proxy, that normally means TCP 80 and 443 only.
- Restrict the firewall. Permit the public ports required by the design at both the host firewall and any upstream security group. Do not expose backend ports merely because the applications use them internally.
- Install certificates. Obtain a certificate covering each HTTPS hostname at the TLS termination point. If TLS ends at the origin server, the origin must present the matching certificate; DNS-only records do not provide encryption by themselves.
- Test by hostname and port. Request every domain using its intended scheme and port. Test the expected
Hostheader as well as the browser URL so that a default virtual host cannot hide a routing error.
Direct ports versus a reverse proxy
| Consideration | Direct port binding | Reverse proxy on 80/443 |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Includes :port whenever the service is not on a standard port |
Uses conventional https://domain URLs |
| Initial setup | Fewer proxy rules; each service owns its listener | More routing and certificate configuration |
| Public exposure | Every selected application port may be reachable from the internet | Usually only ports 80 and 443 are public |
| TLS management | Configure TLS separately for each public service | Centralize TLS at the proxy, or deliberately re-encrypt upstream |
| Best use | Internal tools, testing, and simple low-risk services | Public multi-site or multi-application hosting |
How hostname matching works
DNS gets the client to an IP address; it does not choose between sites. The connection then reaches a particular listening address and port. For HTTP/1.1 and typical HTTPS traffic, the request carries a hostname. Apache or NGINX compares that hostname with its virtual-host definitions for the port that accepted the connection.
For NGINX, multiple server directives can coexist in the http context. The matching process is scoped to the selected listen socket. An unmatched name uses that port’s default server, which should be configured intentionally rather than left to serve a sensitive site by accident.
HTTPS adds certificate selection before the encrypted HTTP request is available. The certificate presented on a hostname and port must cover the name the user requested. A correct proxy route with an unrelated certificate still produces a browser warning.

Troubleshooting by symptom
NXDOMAIN or the wrong IP address
Inspect the authoritative A and AAAA records first. Remove stale or incorrect records, and remember that an AAAA record can direct IPv6-capable clients to a different machine than the A record directs IPv4 clients. Recheck with dig after caches update.
Connection refused or timeout
Verify that the intended process is listening on the exact address and port. A service bound only to 127.0.0.1 cannot be reached directly from the internet, which is correct for a backend behind a proxy but not for a deliberately public direct-port design. Then check the host firewall, cloud security group, and any network firewall between the client and server.
The wrong website appears
Confirm the URL’s port and hostname. Inspect the default virtual host for that port, then check the Apache ServerName/ServerAlias or NGINX server_name values. With a proxy, verify that the request reached the intended 443 server block and that the proxy forwarded to the correct backend.
HTTPS certificate warning
Make sure the certificate’s names include the exact hostname, including whether users access www or the bare domain. Confirm that TLS terminates in the component presenting that certificate. A certificate for one domain cannot validate a different domain simply because both resolve to the same IP.
502 or 504 from the proxy
Check that the backend process is running, that the proxy can reach its configured address and port, and that the protocol in proxy_pass matches the service. A proxy cannot forward to an application that is stopped, listening on a different interface, or speaking a different protocol than configured.
Security and operational practices
- Expose only the ports required by the chosen architecture; keep application ports private whenever a reverse proxy can serve the site.
- Give each domain its own document root, process, credentials, and log context so a mistake in one site does not silently publish another site’s files.
- Use an explicit default server that rejects unknown hostnames rather than showing a production site for every unmatched name.
- Renew certificates before expiration and test renewal without replacing a working certificate with one that omits a hostname.
- Record the public hostname, listener port, backend address, certificate location, and firewall rule for every application.
- Do not assume that sharing one server creates a universal capacity limit. The authoritative Apache and NGINX material describes mechanisms and examples, not a fixed number of domains a machine can host; practical limits depend on CPU, memory, network traffic, connection counts, and application workload.
Choosing between Apache and NGINX
| Decision factor | Apache | NGINX |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Listen plus <VirtualHost address:port> and ServerName |
listen plus server blocks and server_name |
| Direct ports | Define a listener and virtual host for each address-and-port pair | Define a server block for each listening port |
| Reverse proxying | Supported through proxy virtual hosts | Supported directly with proxy_pass |
| Best choice | The option your administrators already maintain confidently | The option your administrators already maintain confidently |
There is no DNS-side difference between the two. The domains still resolve to the server’s address, and the selected web server still performs the port and hostname routing.

Practical decision checklist
- Need ordinary URLs with no port suffix? Use a reverse proxy on 80/443.
- Need a quick private or test endpoint? A direct listener on a non-standard port may be sufficient.
- Can users reach the backend ports directly? If not, bind applications privately and expose only the proxy.
- Are all A and AAAA records correct? Verify both address families instead of testing only from one network.
- Does every HTTPS hostname have a matching certificate at the TLS endpoint?
- Have you tested unknown hostnames and the default server so they cannot reveal the wrong site?
Frequently asked questions
Can DNS point a domain directly to port 8080?
No. Standard A, AAAA, and CNAME records resolve names to addresses, not TCP ports. Put the port in the URL, or use a reverse proxy that accepts traffic on 80 or 443 and forwards internally to 8080.
Can two domains use the same public IP and port?
Yes. Name-based virtual hosting lets Apache or NGINX select different sites from the hostname in the request, provided both domains resolve to that IP and the virtual-host definitions share the same listener correctly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need a separate IP address for every domain?
No. Multiple domains can share one IP through name-based virtual hosting or a reverse proxy. Separate addresses are only needed when your design requires strict address-level separation or another service already occupies the required address-and-port combination.
How do I hide an application running on port 8080?
Run a reverse proxy on public port 443, define a server block for the domain, and forward that block to the application at an internal address such as 127.0.0.1:8080. Keep 8080 closed at the firewall unless direct access is intentional.
Is there a fixed maximum number of domains one server can host?
No universal number is established by the Apache or NGINX configuration models. The practical limit is determined by the machine’s resources, traffic, connection load, certificate and configuration management, and the applications themselves.
