How to Upload Your Website to a Hosting Server

Upload a website by placing its production files in the hosting account’s document root, then point DNS to that host. This guide explains File Manager, FTP/FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk and Git workflows, secure credentials, testing and troubleshooting.

To put a website online, upload its finished files to the hosting account’s configured document root, then point the domain’s DNS to that hosting service. You need four things: the site files, an active hosting account, connection credentials, and the correct document-root path. The method can be a browser-based File Manager, FTP or FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, or a Git deployment supported by your host.

What you need before uploading

Gather these items before opening a transfer tool:

  • Finished site files: For a static site, this normally includes an index.html file plus folders for CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and other assets. A framework project may require its generated production or build folder rather than the source folder.
  • A hosting account: Confirm that the plan includes at least one file-upload method and lets you manage the domain’s DNS or tells you which DNS records to create.
  • Connection details: Depending on the method, you may need a server hostname, username, password or SSH key, port, and the directory to which the account is restricted.
  • The domain’s document root: This is the directory the web server publishes when someone visits the domain. Uploading successfully to another directory does not change the public site.
  • A backup: Download or copy the current live files before replacing them. Include configuration files and database backups when the site uses a content-management system.

Keep the local copy organized exactly as it should appear online. Check that links and asset references work from the intended deployment location. Relative paths such as images/logo.png are usually safer than paths that assume the site will always be installed at a particular subdirectory.

Find the correct document root

The document root is the most important path in the process. It determines which files the hosting server serves to visitors. On cPanel, the main domain commonly uses public_html; cPanel documentation describes the site root as the public_html folder. Namecheap’s FileZilla instructions likewise use a path such as /home/user/public_html for a main domain.

Do not assume every domain uses the same folder. Add-on domains, subdomains, staging sites, and parked domains can each have a different root. In your hosting panel, open the domain or website settings and record the exact document-root value before transferring anything.

  • If the panel shows /home/account/public_html, upload the site’s contents inside that directory.
  • If it shows a subdirectory such as /home/account/sites/example, use that directory instead of public_html.
  • Upload the contents of your build folder, not an unnecessary outer folder. If you upload build/index.html into the root, the page may be available only at /build/ rather than at the domain root.
  • Leave any host-required system directories in place unless the host’s documentation says they can be removed.

When a transfer completes but the old page remains, checking this path is usually more useful than uploading the same files again.

Choose an upload method

Method Best use What you need Important limitation
File Manager One-off uploads from a browser Hosting-panel login and the site’s root directory Available features and upload limits depend on the host
FTP Traditional desktop file transfer FTP hostname, account name, password, port, and a client Plain FTP is not encrypted; the host may disable it
FTPS FTP workflow with TLS encryption Host-supported FTP over TLS settings and credentials Mode, certificate, and port settings vary by server
SFTP SSH-based secure transfer SSH-capable account, hostname, SSH port, and password or key It is a separate protocol from FTP; an FTP-only account may not work
Web Disk Mounted file access on a supported desktop Web Disk credentials and host support Setup is platform- and host-dependent
Git deployment Repeatable updates from a repository Host Git integration, repository access, and deployment settings Not every hosting plan supports repository-based deployment

For a single small upload, File Manager is usually the shortest route. For regular desktop transfers, use FTPS or SFTP when available. For a team, create an account restricted to the site directory. For frequent releases, Git can make the process repeatable, provided the host supports it.

Prepare and check the local files

  1. Build the production version. If you use a static-site generator or front-end build tool, run its production build command and identify the resulting output directory. Do not upload development dependencies or source files unless the host specifically needs them.
  2. Locate the entry file. A static site normally needs index.html in the directory visitors will open. A server-side application may instead require a host-specific entry point and runtime configuration.
  3. Check case and paths. Many Linux hosting servers treat Logo.png and logo.png as different files. Match every reference to the actual filename. Verify that CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and downloadable files use paths that remain valid after deployment.
  4. Remove accidental local-only settings. Review environment files, API endpoints, debug flags, and test credentials. Keep secrets out of publicly served folders whenever the application architecture allows it.
  5. Make a rollback copy. Compress or duplicate the current live directory and save a copy of the new build. That gives you a known restore point if a replacement breaks the page.

Upload with a hosting File Manager

File Manager is the browser-based option offered by many cPanel hosts. It avoids installing a separate client and is convenient for a small static site or a quick replacement.

  1. Sign in to the hosting control panel and open File Manager.
  2. Navigate to the domain’s configured document root, such as public_html for a cPanel main domain.
  3. If you are replacing an existing site, preserve the backup you made. Remove or rename only the old files you intend to replace; do not delete host-generated directories without checking their purpose.
  4. Use the panel’s Upload control to select the production files. If the panel accepts one archive, upload a ZIP, then use Extract in the document root. Confirm that index.html and the asset folders are directly in the root after extraction.
  5. Refresh the directory listing and verify file names, sizes, and modification times. A successful browser upload message alone does not prove that the files landed in the correct folder.
  6. Open the domain in a private browser window and test the home page, styles, scripts, and images.

File Manager interfaces differ. If an upload fails because of a browser-size or timeout limit, split the transfer into smaller archives or use FTP, FTPS, SFTP, or another method enabled by the host.

Upload with FTP or FTPS

FTP is broadly supported, but ordinary FTP can send credentials and file data without encryption. FTPS adds FTP over TLS. Use the encrypted option when the host offers it and avoid sending a primary control-panel password through a transfer client.

Create a restricted transfer account

In cPanel, open FTP Accounts and create an account whose directory is limited to the site it must update. A separate account lets a collaborator transfer files without receiving the main control-panel login. Record the exact username, password, server name, and directory shown by the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the client

  1. Install a desktop client such as FileZilla, Cyberduck, or WinSCP from its official source.
  2. Create a new connection and enter the server hostname, username, password, and port supplied by the host.
  3. For FTP, port 21 is the common default, but the host can change it. Select FTPS or FTP over TLS when that is the supported secure mode.
  4. If the server requests a hostname rather than the domain name for FTP-over-SSL, use the value supplied by the host. cPanel notes that FTP does not support Server Name Indication, so the server hostname may be required.
  5. Connect, then open the remote document root in the client’s server pane.

Transfer the site

In the local pane, open the production build folder. Select its contents and drag them into the remote document root. Wait until the transfer queue reports that every item completed. Review failed transfers rather than assuming a partial upload is usable; a missing stylesheet or JavaScript bundle can make an otherwise present page appear broken.

Upload with SFTP

SFTP runs through SSH and is not “FTP over SSH.” It is a separate protocol with its own server support and authentication. Use it when your host provides an SSH-capable account, because it protects the connection through the SSH channel.

  1. Confirm with the host that SFTP is enabled and ask for the SFTP hostname, SSH port, username, and authentication method. The SSH port may not be the FTP port.
  2. In your transfer client, choose SFTP rather than FTP or FTPS.
  3. Enter the supplied SSH port and authenticate with the password or private key configured for that account.
  4. Navigate to the document root and transfer the production files as you would with FTP.
  5. Check the resulting remote paths and open the site in a private window.

An FTP-only account created in cPanel’s FTP Accounts cannot necessarily authenticate over SFTP. cPanel support identifies technical limitations with using those FTP-only accounts for SFTP; use a cPanel or SSH-capable account, or choose another method your host supports. A rejected SFTP login is therefore not automatically proof that the password is wrong.

Use Web Disk or Git when the host supports them

Web Disk

Web Disk can mount a remote hosting directory so it behaves more like a local folder. Create separate Web Disk credentials restricted to the relevant site, connect using the operating-system instructions supplied by the host, and copy the production files into the mounted document root. Because setup depends on the host and desktop platform, use the connection profile and security settings provided in the hosting panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Git-based deployment

Git is useful when you publish repeatedly and want a recorded, repeatable release process. In the hosting panel, look for Git Version Control or a repository deployment feature. Configure the repository, branch, destination directory, and any build or deployment hook required by the host. Confirm that the destination is the domain’s document root or that the host maps it there. A repository checkout in the wrong directory has the same visible result as a misplaced File Manager upload: the public site does not change.

Before using Git for a production site, decide how environment variables, generated assets, permissions, and rollback commits will be handled. Do not expose a private repository or deployment key in a publicly served folder.

Use least-privilege credentials

Do not share the primary hosting-panel password merely to let someone upload files. Create a separate FTP, FTPS, Web Disk, or SSH/SFTP account and restrict it to the necessary site directory. Give collaborators only the method they need, revoke accounts when access is no longer required, and store passwords or private keys in a password manager.

FTP, FTPS, SFTP, Web Disk, and Git are separate access routes. An account created for one route may not work with another. In particular, an FTP account is not automatically an SFTP account, and an FTP service may be disabled entirely by the hosting provider.

Point the domain to the hosting server

Uploading files and directing a domain to them are separate operations. The site will appear at the domain only when the domain’s DNS records point to the intended hosting service.

  1. From the hosting panel, find the provider’s required DNS values or the nameservers it assigns to your account.
  2. At the domain registrar or current DNS provider, update the relevant nameserver or address records exactly as instructed. Do not change unrelated mail or verification records unless the host tells you to.
  3. If your cPanel account includes Zone Editor, use it to review or manage records that are hosted there. If DNS is managed elsewhere, make the change in that external DNS control panel instead.
  4. Verify that the domain and any www hostname resolve to the intended hosting service. Test both forms if your site is expected to answer on both.

If DNS still points to an old host, the new files can be correct and the old site can continue to load. Check the authoritative DNS provider and the hosting account’s domain mapping before changing files again.

Test the published site

Use a private or incognito browser window so a previously cached page is less likely to mislead you. Test the site in this order:

  • Open the bare domain and confirm that the expected entry page appears.
  • Open a representative internal page and follow navigation links.
  • Inspect images, fonts, stylesheets, and JavaScript-driven features.
  • Submit a form or test another server-side function if the site has one, without using real customer data.
  • Open the browser’s developer tools and review the Network and Console panels. A 404 generally means a wrong path or missing file; a blocked script or stylesheet may indicate an incorrect URL or server policy.
  • Check both the domain and the www version when both are configured.

If only some assets fail, compare the requested URL with the remote directory and correct filename capitalization. If every page shows the old site, investigate the document root, DNS target, caching, and the transfer queue rather than repeatedly uploading the same build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The transfer succeeds but the old site remains

  • Reopen the domain settings and confirm the exact document root. Files outside that directory are not visible to site visitors.
  • Confirm that the client transferred the contents of the build folder, not the folder itself nested one level too deep.
  • Check DNS at the registrar or DNS provider and compare the target with the hosting service you intended to use.
  • Use a private window and inspect the response; a cached page can obscure a successful change.

The client cannot connect

  • Copy the hostname, username, password, and port directly from the hosting panel.
  • For FTP, try the host’s stated port; 21 is only the common default. For SFTP, use the SSH port supplied by the host, not automatically port 21.
  • Check whether FTP has been disabled. If so, use File Manager, SFTP, Web Disk, Git, or another enabled route.
  • Confirm that the selected protocol matches the account. Choosing SFTP for an FTP-only account, or FTP for an SSH-only account, produces a misleading login failure.

SFTP rejects valid-looking credentials

Check that the account is SSH-capable. cPanel’s FTP Accounts-created accounts are intended for FTP and cannot necessarily be used for SFTP because of technical limitations. Request an SSH/SFTP account or use the host’s supported File Manager or FTPS workflow.

The home page loads but images or styles do not

  • Open the failing request in the browser’s Network panel and compare its URL with the remote filename.
  • Correct relative paths that assume a different subdirectory.
  • Match capitalization exactly and verify that the referenced files completed their transfer.
  • Check that the build output, rather than source-only files, was uploaded.

An upload is incomplete

Review the client’s failed-transfer list and retry only those files. For browser File Manager, use a smaller archive or switch to a desktop transfer method if the host imposes upload-size or timeout limits. Do not delete the working backup until the replacement site has passed testing.

A practical deployment checklist

  • Production build created and backed up.
  • Entry file present in the intended published directory.
  • Domain’s exact document root confirmed.
  • Transfer method supported by the host and matched to the account type.
  • Restricted credentials created instead of sharing the main panel login.
  • All files copied into the document root, with no failed transfers.
  • DNS records or nameservers pointed to the intended hosting service.
  • Domain, www hostname, navigation, styles, scripts, images, and forms tested.
  • Rollback copy retained until the new deployment is verified.

Which method should you use?

Choose File Manager when you need to publish a small site once and your host provides a usable browser interface. Choose FTPS for a familiar FTP-style workflow with TLS, or SFTP when the host provides SSH access and you want an SSH-based secure transfer. Use Web Disk when a mounted remote folder fits your team’s workflow. Choose Git when deployments are frequent and the host can build or check out the correct branch into the correct document root.

The decisive detail in every case is not the brand of client; it is the combination of an enabled protocol, valid credentials, the right port, and the correct document root. Once DNS points the domain to that hosting account, the files in that root are the files visitors can receive.
