To host Cobblemon on Fabric, use the official Cobblemon Fabric server distribution for a supported Minecraft: Java Edition release, install the matching Fabric Loader, Fabric API and Cobblemon files, then have every player install the corresponding client modpack. The current official listing identifies Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 as supported versions. Allocate at least 2.5 GB of memory; the maintainers recommend 3 GB or more. Server and clients must match their Minecraft, Fabric and Cobblemon releases.

What the official Cobblemon setup includes
Cobblemon is an open-source Pokémon mod for Fabric and NeoForge, but this guide is specifically for the Fabric edition of the official modpack. It targets Minecraft: Java Edition rather than Bedrock Edition. The official project publishes separate client and server distributions, so downloading a profile intended only for playing locally is not the same as preparing a dedicated server.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe project also states, “Cobblemon does NOT have an official server.” You are therefore operating your own Java server or selecting an independent hosting provider. Cobblemon supplies the modpack and installation guidance, not a project-run multiplayer world, subscription, uptime guarantee or universal server address.
Server package versus client modpack
The server download contains the files needed by a headless Fabric installation. The client pack contains the files and launcher metadata a player needs to start the game. The official listing distinguishes the two and notes that the distributions can connect with vanilla Cobblemon servers and clients, but a dedicated server should still be built from the server package rather than by uploading an entire desktop profile.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Keep the two distributions on the same release. A client can have extra client-side convenience mods only when the pack and server documentation allow them; Cobblemon itself, Minecraft, Fabric Loader and required dependencies must remain compatible.
Choose a supported Minecraft and Cobblemon release first
Version selection comes before server creation. Open the current official Cobblemon Fabric release on the project’s Modrinth or CurseForge listing and record the Minecraft version shown for that file. The current official Modrinth compatibility listing identifies Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 for Fabric. Do not infer compatibility from a similarly named file, an older tutorial or a different loader.

Record the complete version set
- Minecraft: Java Edition version.
- Cobblemon Fabric release.
- Fabric Loader version recommended for that Minecraft release.
- Fabric API version supplied or required by the selected pack.
- Any additional mods included in the official server distribution.
Write this information down before installing anything. When a player later reports a “mod mismatch,” this list gives you a precise comparison instead of relying on file names alone.
Download from the official project listing
Use the official Cobblemon [Fabric] release page on Modrinth or CurseForge. Select the server distribution when one is offered, and save the client release information for your players. Do not mix a Fabric server with a NeoForge file, or combine files from different Minecraft branches simply because their Cobblemon names look similar.
Memory and host requirements
The official modpack maintainers list 2.5 GB as the minimum memory allocation and recommend 3 GB or more. Those figures describe the modpack’s baseline recommendation, not a guarantee for every world. View distance, simulation distance, world generation, the number of simultaneous players and extra server-side content can all increase the requirement; the official pages do not prescribe a universal higher value.
Plan the machine around the workload
- Leave memory for the operating system and the Java process itself rather than assigning every available gigabyte to Minecraft.
- Prefer a machine with dependable CPU time and fast storage, because world generation and chunk loading can create short periods of heavy activity.
- Use a wired connection or a stable data-centre connection when possible. Reliability matters more than a high headline download speed.
- Check that the host can run the Java version required by the selected Minecraft and Fabric release.
- Reserve storage for the world, logs, backups and future update copies; the modpack listing does not state a fixed disk quota.
If the server is consistently exhausting its allocation, first check player count and distance settings, then consider more memory or a stronger host. Changing a value blindly can conceal a CPU, storage or network bottleneck.

Install the Fabric server package
The exact launch command and file layout can vary by operating system and by the package version. Use the command supplied inside the downloaded server distribution and verify it against current Fabric and Minecraft server documentation rather than copying a command from an old guide.
1. Create a clean server directory
Make a new directory dedicated to this Cobblemon instance. Avoid placing it inside a client launcher’s profile directory. A separate directory makes backups, upgrades and rollback copies easier to identify.
2. Extract the server distribution
Unpack the official server archive into that directory. Preserve the folders and launch scripts supplied by the package. If the archive contains a README or a version-specific installer, read it before moving files; deleting a helper file can leave a seemingly complete but unstartable installation.
3. Install the matching Fabric components
The official Cobblemon installation guidance requires the recommended Fabric Loader for the selected Minecraft version, Fabric API and the Cobblemon Fabric mod. Put the matching mod files in the server’s mods folder. The official server package may already include these components; if it does, do not replace them with versions from another Minecraft release.
Recommended Free Tools
- Fabric Loader: the loader that starts Fabric mods for the selected Minecraft version.
- Fabric API: the dependency used by Fabric mods, including Cobblemon.
- Cobblemon Fabric mod: the gameplay mod itself, at the exact release chosen in the first step.
A missing dependency usually produces a clear startup error. Treat the named file and version in that error as the item to correct, not as a reason to download a random newer build.
4. Start the server once
Run the launch command included with the server package from inside the server directory. The first run normally creates configuration files and stops or pauses for Minecraft’s EULA acknowledgement. Follow the prompt, review the EULA yourself, and set the required acceptance value only if you agree to its terms.

Stop the process cleanly after the first successful file generation. A clean stop allows the world and configuration files to close correctly before you edit them.
5. Configure the instance
Edit server.properties and the other files created during the first run. Set the world name, game rules, difficulty, player limit and distance settings appropriate for your group. The exact property names and available values belong to the Minecraft version you selected, so use that version’s current documentation.
Create a whitelist for a private community, assign operator permissions only to trusted accounts, and keep the server address out of public posts unless you intend to run an open server. Configure the host’s firewall and network forwarding according to its operating system and current Minecraft guidance; the canonical Cobblemon pages do not specify a universal port or operating-system procedure.
6. Allocate memory in the host’s launcher
Apply the memory target described in the official recommendation to the launch configuration supplied by your host or script. Hosting panels may express this as a RAM field, while a self-managed installation may expose Java heap options. Do not put Java options into the Minecraft argument section unless the launcher documentation says to do so. Restart and confirm in the startup log that the intended configuration is being used.
7. Test before inviting players
Join locally or from a second network account before announcing the address. Walk far enough to generate new terrain, catch or battle a Pokémon, reconnect after stopping the server cleanly, and verify that the world and player data return. This short test catches missing mods, permissions errors and write-access problems while the installation is still easy to replace.
Install the matching client for every player
The official Cobblemon Wiki recommends the Modrinth App as the client installation route. A player signs in with a Microsoft account, searches for “Cobblemon,” selects the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack, installs it and launches it from the library.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Client setup procedure
- Install and open the Modrinth App, then sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Type
Cobblemoninto the search bar. - Select the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack, not a similarly named community pack.
- Choose the same Minecraft and Cobblemon release used by the server.
- Install and launch the profile once so its files finish downloading.
- Add the server address in Multiplayer and connect after the server has completed startup.
Players should not update their profiles independently while the server remains on the old release. A launcher may make an update look harmless, but a changed Minecraft, Fabric or Cobblemon version can prevent login or create gameplay differences.
Self-hosting or a managed server?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the files and network, while a managed provider trades some control for a web panel and infrastructure maintained by someone else. The official Cobblemon pages identify third-party hosting as an option but do not publish current prices, service-level terms or a capacity guarantee for any provider.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed provider |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | You supply hardware, electricity and network service; recurring cost depends on what you already own. | A recurring rental fee is typical. Compare the provider’s current plan, billing terms and backup charges directly. |
| Control | Full access to the server directory, Java options, backups, logs and additional mods. | Control depends on the panel and plan; check whether you can upload the exact official server package and edit required files. |
| Setup effort | You handle Java, Fabric, firewall rules, forwarding, updates and recovery. | The provider may automate installation and networking, but you still choose the correct Minecraft/Fabric package and maintain compatibility. |
| Latency | Players are limited by the host’s location and home connection. | You can usually select a data-centre region; choose one close to most players and confirm that the advertised location is available on the selected plan. |
| Capacity | Bound by your CPU, memory, storage and upload capacity. | Bound by the plan’s allocated resources and any provider limits. Ask how resources are shared and whether upgrades are immediate. |
| Version support | You can install the exact release yourself. | Verify that the panel offers the required Minecraft version, Fabric Loader and official Cobblemon server distribution before paying. |
Whichever route you choose, retain your own world backups. A provider’s backup feature is useful but should not be the only copy you can restore.
Backups, permissions and routine maintenance
Make backups before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world and configuration directories, or use a backup feature that explicitly supports live worlds. Keep at least one copy away from the running machine and label each archive with the Minecraft, Fabric and Cobblemon versions it contains. Test a restore on a separate directory; an archive that was never tested is only an assumption.
Limit administrative access
Use the whitelist for a private server and grant operator status sparingly. Keep the server console, panel credentials and backup files private. If a player needs a temporary administrative task, remove the permission afterward and record what changed.
Update as a coordinated change
Cobblemon is actively updated. Before changing versions, read the current official release notes, make a backup, copy the existing server directory as a rollback point, and test the new package with one client. Update the server and every player’s client together. Never overwrite the only working installation before confirming that the new world loads and that your required mods remain available.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often
The server exits immediately
- Read the final lines of the log for a missing EULA acknowledgement, an invalid Java runtime or a dependency named as absent.
- Confirm that you launched from the server directory using the package’s supplied command.
- Check that the selected Fabric Loader and Minecraft versions agree.
- Restore the original package files if you replaced a supplied library or mod with an unrelated build.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare the client’s Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, Fabric API and Cobblemon release against the server’s recorded version set. Remove stale duplicate files from the client profile, or reinstall the official profile if its files have been mixed with another pack. Updating only the client is not a fix unless the server is updated in the same maintenance window.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The server says Fabric API or Cobblemon is missing
Inspect the server’s mods folder and ensure the required files are present there, not only in a launcher profile on your desktop. Check the log for the exact dependency version and install the build that belongs to the chosen Minecraft release. Restart after correcting the folder so the loader performs a fresh dependency check.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm that the server process has finished loading and is listening on the host’s configured interface.
- Verify the address shared with players and the host’s firewall or forwarding rules.
- Test from the host and from an external connection to distinguish a local configuration problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Check the whitelist and player permissions if the connection reaches the server but is refused during login.
Because network commands and port settings differ by operating system, router and provider, use current Fabric/Minecraft networking documentation for the final rule rather than a copied value from an older Cobblemon tutorial.
The world lags or runs out of memory
Check the server log and host metrics while the problem occurs. Reduce unnecessary view or simulation distance, limit simultaneous players or remove optional server-side content before increasing resources. Make one change at a time and observe whether chunk generation, entity activity or memory pressure is the actual cause. The official Cobblemon pages provide the baseline memory recommendation but do not define universal tuning values.
An update breaks the world
Stop the server, restore the last known-good directory and world backup, and keep the failed update separate for diagnosis. Do not repeatedly launch a damaged world with different versions; that can make rollback harder. Once the original instance is stable, test the upgrade on a copy and read the release notes for migration requirements.
Pre-launch checklist
- The server uses Minecraft: Java Edition and a Cobblemon Fabric release listed as compatible with that Minecraft version.
- The official server distribution, rather than a client-only profile, is installed in its own directory.
- The recommended Fabric Loader, Fabric API and Cobblemon Fabric mod are present and match the selected release.
- The host has the official memory baseline available, with additional headroom assessed for the expected workload.
- The first run completed, the EULA was accepted if you agreed to it, and the server stopped cleanly once.
server.properties, whitelist, operator permissions, firewall and forwarding rules were reviewed.- A tested backup exists before inviting players.
- Every player installed the official Cobblemon [Fabric] client pack at the same Minecraft and Cobblemon release.
- A test connection, terrain generation, Pokémon interaction, restart and reconnect all succeeded.
The practical answer
Use the official Fabric server package for the exact Minecraft release you selected, install its matching Fabric components, allocate the maintainer-recommended memory, and keep client and server versions synchronized. Since Cobblemon does not operate an official server, you remain responsible for access control, networking, backups and updates whether the machine is at home or rented from a host.
