Set a WooCommerce product’s normal amount in Regular price, put a temporary promotion in Sale price, and schedule sale dates when necessary. For variable products, enter a price on every variation. Tax status, tax class, store currency settings, coupons and any dynamic-pricing rules can change what shoppers finally pay, so verify the result in the cart and at checkout for each selling jurisdiction.

For a single game, code, accessory or downloadable edition, WooCommerce’s built-in fields are usually enough. Quantity breaks, wholesale rates, role-based prices, cart-total offers and Buy X Get Y promotions require a pricing-rule extension or programmatic rules. The safest setup is to choose one pricing method for the business rule, document how rules interact, and test the customer-facing total before publishing.

Enter the regular and sale amounts
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Products > All Products.
- Select the product you want to edit.
- In the Product data panel, open General.
- Enter the everyday amount in Regular price. WooCommerce defines this as the regular price of the item.
- Enter a promotional amount in Sale price if the product should be discounted. WooCommerce displays the sale amount instead of the regular amount while the sale is active.
- Click Update (or Publish for a new product), then view the product as a customer.
Type only the numeric amount. The currency symbol, decimal separator, thousands separator and currency position come from the store’s currency and formatting settings; they are not chosen by typing a symbol into the price field. A value such as 19.99 therefore means 19.99 in the store currency, not automatically US dollars or euros.
Schedule a promotion
When a sale should start or end at a particular time, use the scheduling control attached to Sale price. Enter the start and end dates, save the product, and check the storefront immediately before and after the planned window. A scheduled sale changes the active price only during that interval; it does not permanently replace the regular amount.

Confirm the site’s timezone in WordPress before promising a launch time. If a game bundle is advertised as discounted “through Friday,” define whether that means the store’s configured timezone and whether the end date includes the entire day. A customer in another country may see a different local clock even though WooCommerce evaluates the schedule using the site configuration.
Understand what shoppers see after tax
Choose tax status and tax class
The Product data panel also contains Tax status and Tax class. Tax status can be Taxable, Shipping only or None. The standard tax class is selected by default, while stores can configure additional classes for products that require different rates.

They do not themselves set a tax percentage. Rates, customer address, shipping destination and the store’s tax display settings determine the calculation.
Inclusive versus exclusive display
WooCommerce can display catalog prices including tax or excluding tax, according to the store’s tax configuration. The amount entered in the product editor remains the product price; the storefront may add or separate tax depending on those settings. A price that looks correct on the product page can therefore produce a different line total in the cart when the customer enters a taxable address.
Test each jurisdiction you sell into. Use a customer address that triggers the relevant tax rule and inspect the product page, cart, checkout, order confirmation and receipt. Check both a regular-price order and a sale-price order. If your store sells digital games or downloads, do not assume that a customer’s billing country and shipping country behave identically: the configured tax rules decide which address information is used.
Price variable products by variation
A variable product does not get one universal price merely because the parent product has a price field. Sizes, platforms, editions, storage amounts, colors or license terms can each have a different amount. Enter the actual price on the individual variation.

- Edit the parent product and set Product data to Variable product.
- Open Product data > Variations.
- Expand a variation, such as “PC download,” “Console code” or “Deluxe edition.”
- Enter that variation’s Regular price, and enter a Sale price if the promotion applies to that option.
- Repeat for every purchasable variation, then save the changes and update the product.
Give every variation a deliberate value. Leaving one variation without a price can make it unavailable for purchase or cause it to display differently from its siblings. If a promotion applies only to one platform or edition, schedule the sale on that variation rather than on the parent product.
After saving, select each option combination on the product page. Verify that the displayed amount, stock message, SKU and checkout line item all change together. Test direct links to a preselected variation as well as selections made manually; both paths should show the same price.
Choose a pricing method that matches the rule
Use the simplest mechanism that expresses the business requirement. The following comparison separates the scope, trigger and rule behavior so a game store does not accidentally implement a catalog-wide discount when it intended to discount one bundle.

These modes cover rules that the native editor cannot express, such as “buy three copies of any qualifying soundtrack and reduce each eligible item,” “approved schools receive a role-based rate,” or “spend enough on a category to unlock a discount.” Depending on the rule, the adjustment can be a fixed amount, a percentage or an exact replacement price.
Define the scope before the amount
Start each rule by writing down exactly what qualifies: a product, variation, category, tag, customer role, specific customer, quantity or order total. Then define the price basis: regular price, sale price, a fixed reduction, a percentage reduction or a fixed per-item price. This prevents an apparently small rule from affecting every edition in a category.

For example, a “three or more PC codes” rule should target the PC-code variations, not the parent product’s entire category. A wholesale rule should target the approved role and specify whether it can apply to products already on sale. Record exclusions, minimum quantities and the date range in the rule description so another administrator can audit it later.
Resolve competing rules deliberately
When several rules match, configure the extension’s documented priority behavior rather than relying on the order in which rules happen to appear. Common choices include following rule order, choosing the smallest price or discount, choosing the highest price or discount, or applying all matching rules.
“Apply all” can produce a much lower result than a store owner expects, especially when a category discount and a quantity discount target the same line. “Smallest price” and “highest discount” are not always equivalent when one rule changes the price and another changes the discount percentage. Create a test cart for every overlap and write down the expected line price before enabling the rule.
Handle coupons and sale prices safely
Dynamic pricing and coupons can stack. The Dynamic Pricing documentation states that the extension cannot disable its settings when coupons are used, so the coupon discount is added to the Dynamic Pricing settings. Unless another rule explicitly prevents it, a shopper may therefore receive both the automatic price reduction and the coupon reduction.
- Put an item that qualifies for the dynamic rule in the cart.
- Record the line price and subtotal before a coupon.
- Apply the coupon and record the new line, discount and total values.
- Repeat with an item already using a native sale price.
- Check the order summary, tax, shipping and final payment amount at checkout.
Decide whether coupons should be valid on sale items, dynamically discounted items, both or neither. Configure the extension and coupon restrictions to match that policy, then test an ineligible product as a control. Never infer the final price from the product-page strike-through alone; the cart is where stacked discounts become visible.
Make quantity and wholesale tiers understandable
Tiered pricing tables
Tiered-pricing documentation describes percentage pricing for specified quantities and rules created either at product level or globally. A typical structure might define one price for one to nine units, a lower percentage for ten to 24, and another tier above that. The exact percentages and thresholds are your business decisions; the extension applies the rule you configure.

Use a product-level rule when only one game bundle has tiers. Use a global rule when the same wholesale policy covers a controlled catalog. Specify whether the tier is calculated per variation, per product, per category or across the whole cart. “Ten units” can mean ten copies of one title or ten eligible items across a category, and those are materially different offers.
Show the qualifying condition
Dynamic pricing may change the displayed price without automatically adding explanatory text to the product, cart or checkout pages. Add a clear message to the product description or pricing table, such as “Buy 10 or more eligible copies to receive the 15% tier.” State whether the shown amount is per item, whether tiers apply before tax, and whether coupons can be combined.
Keep the message synchronized with the rule. If a threshold changes, update the visible table at the same time. A lower checkout total that appears without an explanation can look like an error, while a price that changes only after adding quantity can look misleading if the requirement is hidden.

For imports, catalog synchronization or scheduled maintenance, the WooCommerce REST API represents a product’s regular_price and sale_price. The current price is derived from those fields. Sale start and end dates control scheduled pricing.
When a script updates prices, treat the regular and sale fields as the source values rather than attempting to write the derived current price. Send the intended numeric strings, preserve the store’s currency assumptions, and include sale date fields when the promotion is scheduled. After an import, open representative products in the dashboard and verify the storefront, cart and checkout.
Variation prices must be maintained on the variation records, not only on the parent product. An import that updates a variable parent while leaving its variations unchanged will not reliably change what customers pay for each option.

Test the complete customer journey
A price is not finished when it appears in the editor. Use a repeatable checklist for each new product, promotion or pricing rule:
- View the product while logged out and, when relevant, while logged in as each customer role.
- Select every purchasable variation and confirm its regular and sale amounts.
- Test the sale before, during and after its scheduled dates using the site timezone.
- Add one qualifying quantity and then the smallest quantity that crosses each tier.
- Test a cart containing eligible and ineligible products together.
- Apply a valid coupon, an invalid coupon and a coupon on an already discounted item.
- Enter customer addresses that trigger each tax class or jurisdiction you serve.
- Check cart, checkout, payment confirmation, order email and the administrator’s order screen.
- Confirm that refunds, quantities and line-item prices retain the intended values.
Use a staging site or a private test product when changing global rules. Clear page, object and fragment caches after a price-rule change, and test in a private browser window so you do not mistake a cached catalog page for the current configuration.

Troubleshoot a wrong WooCommerce price
The sale price is not appearing
- Confirm that the sale amount is lower than the regular amount and contains no accidental spaces or symbols.
- Check the sale start and end dates and the WordPress site timezone.
- For a variable product, inspect the variation rather than only the parent product.
- Clear page and fragment caches, then test as a logged-out customer.
The variation shows the wrong amount
- Open Product data > Variations and verify the selected combination’s regular and sale fields.
- Check that attributes are correctly assigned to the variation and that the customer is not selecting an out-of-stock or incomplete combination.
- Inspect the cart line item after changing the option; the cart should use the same variation price shown on the product page.
The cart total is lower than expected
- Look for a dynamic quantity, category, role or order-total rule.
- Check whether multiple matching rules are configured to apply all discounts.
- Remove coupons and compare the subtotal again; coupon reductions may stack with dynamic pricing.
- Review tax display and calculation, because an inclusive or exclusive presentation can change the visible total without changing the underlying product amount.
The cart total is higher than the product page
- Enter the customer’s tax address and inspect the tax line.
- Confirm the product’s tax status and tax class.
- Check shipping charges and any order-level fees separately from the product line price.
- Verify that the product page is not displaying a cached or role-specific amount.
An imported price looks inconsistent
- Check the API payload’s
regular_priceandsale_price, not only the derivedprice. - Confirm that sale dates use the intended format and timezone.
- For variable products, inspect the individual variation records.
- Run a storefront and checkout test after the import rather than trusting a successful API response alone.
Practical pricing patterns for game stores
One digital game
Use one regular price. Add a sale price only when the promotion has a defined window. Set the appropriate tax status and class, then test a customer address in each market you serve.
Standard, deluxe and collector editions
Create variations when customers choose among editions in one product listing and assign each variation its own price. If editions have unrelated stock, fulfillment or descriptions, separate products may be easier to manage; the pricing principle remains the same: the purchasable item needs the amount.
Wholesale copies for events or classrooms
Use a quantity-based or role-based pricing rule. Define whether the threshold counts copies of one title or eligible titles across a category, and show the tier table before the customer reaches checkout. Test a customer with the wholesale role and one without it.
Publisher bundle promotion
Use a category or special-offer rule when the condition spans several products. Specify which items are discounted, how competing rules are prioritized and whether an existing sale or coupon can stack. Build a cart containing both qualifying and non-qualifying games to verify the boundary.
