To host The Pioneers, use the exact server-pack archive for the release you want, install the Forge version named by that archive, launch the supplied start script, and give every player an identical Minecraft, Forge and modpack installation. The current CurseForge listing identifies The Pioneers 8.2 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge as the latest listed release (April 8, 2026).
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
You can run it on your own computer or use managed hosting. Self-hosting gives you control over files and backups but requires firewall and router work. A managed service handles the machine and much of the networking, usually for a recurring fee. This guide covers both paths, exact setup steps, compatibility checks and the failures that most often stop players from joining.

What you need before starting
The Pioneers is an extra-large adventure and exploration pack with magic and technology systems. Its author, BBoldt, warns that it contains a lot of mods and recommends dedicating 8 GB or more of RAM. That figure is the project’s published starting recommendation, not a guaranteed player-capacity limit or an independent benchmark.
- A specific The Pioneers release and its matching server pack.
- The Minecraft version and Forge loader named by that server-pack release.
- A clean folder reserved for the server files.
- A computer or hosting plan with enough memory for the pack and the operating system.
- A way for players to reach the machine: your home network configuration, a private network service, or a managed host.
- A client installation for each player using the same release, Minecraft version and Forge loader.
The project description says the server pack contains the MODS, CONFIG and KUBEJS folders. It does not publish a complete authoritative CPU, storage or Java-version matrix, so treat those requirements as environment-dependent rather than fixed numbers.

Choose and verify one release
Do not begin by copying whatever files happen to be in a client profile. A server and its clients must be built from one exact release. The CurseForge listing accessed on October 15, 2026 shows these current reference points:
| Item | Published detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Latest listed pack | The Pioneers 8.2 | Use this only if all players agree to run the current listing. |
| Game and loader | Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge | The loader and game version form part of the compatibility identity. |
| Release date shown | April 8, 2026 | Older releases can have different server files and Forge requirements. |
| Project downloads shown | 217,840 on the listing accessed October 15, 2026 | This is a listing count, not a performance test or supported player count. |
1. Open the project’s Files page
Find the release you intend to operate and record its exact name, Minecraft version and Forge information. If you are joining an existing world, use the release that world already uses instead of automatically upgrading to the newest listing.
2. Download the release’s server pack
Open that release’s Additional Files and download its server-pack archive. CurseForge’s Java multiplayer guidance recommends the author-provided server pack when a modpack supplies one because it includes the server-side layout and configuration expected by the project.

3. Keep the client package separate
Create a new, empty folder dedicated to the server and extract the server archive there. The project author specifically warns that ordinary pack files are not a substitute: normal client-pack files will not load correctly as a server. If the extracted folder does not contain the expected server contents, stop and obtain the matching server archive rather than trying to repair a client profile by hand.
Install Forge and perform the first launch
- Identify the required Forge build. Read the Forge version named in the server-pack release. Do not choose a “latest” Forge build independently; loader compatibility controls whether the included mods can load.
- Install or run that Forge version in the server folder. Follow the installer or launch files supplied for the release. Keep the generated libraries and launch files alongside the extracted server-pack files so the script can find them.
- Run the supplied start script. Use the start file included by the server pack rather than inventing a different launch command. The first run may create additional files and stop for the Minecraft EULA.
- Accept the EULA only after reading it. If the first launch creates an EULA file and stops, open that file, set the acceptance value as required by Mojang’s terms, save it, and run the supplied start script again.
- Wait for a complete startup. Let Forge finish loading before treating a long first launch as a failure. A successful startup produces a running server process and the world files defined by the pack.
- Stop cleanly before editing settings. Use the server console’s normal stop command, then make configuration or backup changes while the process is no longer writing to disk.
If the script refers to a Java executable that is missing, install the Java runtime required by the selected Forge build and update the script or system path accordingly. The project materials do not establish one universal Java version for every release, so use the Forge and server-pack instructions for the exact build you selected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAllocate memory and configure the server
Start from the published memory recommendation
Set the server’s maximum heap to at least the project author’s 8 GB recommendation, while leaving enough memory for the operating system and any other applications on the machine. More allocation is not automatically better: an overloaded host, slow storage or a heavily active world can still cause pauses, and assigning nearly all physical memory can make the host itself unstable.
Observe before changing values
During a quiet start and while several players explore different areas, watch the operating system’s memory use and the server console for lag or repeated garbage-collection pauses. Increase resources only when observation shows a memory constraint; reduce competing applications first on a shared home computer. No independent test in the published project information establishes a maximum player count, tick-rate target or hardware threshold.

Preserve the generated configuration
The server pack’s CONFIG and KUBEJS directories are part of the pack’s behavior. Keep them with the server files, and back them up together with the world before changing scripts, gameplay settings or mod configuration. A backup that contains only the world but omits these directories may not reproduce the same server state.
Make a self-hosted server reachable
Starting the process locally does not automatically make it available to friends outside your home. Choose one networking approach and test it with a player who is not on the host machine.

Home router and firewall
- Give the host computer a stable local address so a router rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
- Allow the Java server application through the host operating system’s firewall for the network profile you actually use.
- Configure the router to forward the Minecraft server port shown by your server configuration to the host computer’s local address. The pack sources do not specify a universal port or router design, so use the value and instructions for your installation and router.
- Share the address appropriate to your network with friends, while keeping administrative interfaces and unrelated services closed.
- Test from outside the home network. A connection that works only from the host or from the same Wi-Fi does not prove that the forwarding rule is correct.
Private network or VPN approach
A private network solution can avoid exposing a game port directly to the public internet, but every player must install or support the same solution and use the private address it provides. This is often simpler for a small trusted group, although it adds another application and another possible source of connection problems.
Security and availability limits
Only give server access to people you trust, keep the operating system and Java installation maintained, and make regular offline copies of the world and configuration directories. A home server also depends on your electricity, upload bandwidth and internet service; those limits are separate from the modpack’s Forge compatibility.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Prepare every player’s client
Each player should install the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and The Pioneers release used by the server. The author’s project page distinguishes the server pack from the normal client package, so players should use the regular client installation on their own machines while the host uses the server archive.
- Confirm the release number character-for-character.
- Confirm Minecraft and Forge versions before troubleshooting networks.
- Allow the client to finish downloading and loading all mods before attempting to join.
- Share the server address or managed-host connection link only after the server is fully started.
A mismatch is the first compatibility check when one player can join and another cannot. Compare the selected profile with the server’s release information before deleting files or changing router settings.
Use managed hosting instead
Managed hosting removes the need to maintain a home computer, router forwarding rule and always-on connection, but it introduces recurring cost and provider-specific limits. CurseForge documents a hosted-server workflow in which you select a supported modpack and matching server pack, choose a plan and region, purchase through Tebex, and wait for provisioning by Shockbyte. After provisioning, the owner can share a link or import code so friends receive the modpack and connection information in CurseForge.
Typical managed-host sequence
- Check that the provider lists the exact The Pioneers release and server pack you intend to run.
- Select a plan and a region that suit your group’s budget and likely latency.
- Complete the provider’s purchase and provisioning flow.
- Verify the deployed Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions in the control panel before inviting players.
- Use the provider’s supplied address or CurseForge import link/code rather than giving players an unverified address.
- Take a provider backup before changing mods or configurations, and learn how to download a copy for recovery.
The project description also names Bisect Hosting as a setup option, and BoxToPlay advertises one-click installation. Their prices, supported release, uptime, backup policies and availability can change, so verify those details directly before paying. A one-click label does not remove the requirement to check the deployed Forge and pack versions.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
| Decision factor | Self-hosted | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install the server pack and Forge, run the script, and configure access. | The provider provisions the machine and usually supplies a control panel or import flow. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription, but you provide the hardware, power and internet service. | A recurring plan charge; exact pricing depends on provider, region and resources. |
| File control | Direct access to MODS, CONFIG, KUBEJS, worlds and scripts. |
Access depends on the panel, file manager and provider policy. |
| Backups | You must create and store them yourself. | Some plans provide backups; confirm frequency, retention and download access. |
| Home-network exposure | Requires firewall and router or private-network work. | The provider handles public networking, while you still secure accounts and files. |
| Latency | Depends on your home upload connection and location. | You can usually select a region, but the group’s distance from it still matters. |
| Technical support | You diagnose Forge, Java, operating-system and network failures. | Provider support can diagnose infrastructure and deployment issues; it may not fix every mod conflict. |
| Sharing the exact profile | You distribute installation instructions and the server address. | CurseForge’s hosted workflow can provide a link or import code for the pack and connection details. |
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server closes immediately
- Confirm that you extracted the server-pack archive, not the ordinary client profile.
- Verify the Minecraft version and Forge build named by that server-pack release.
- Run the supplied start script from the server folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Read the first meaningful error in the console rather than focusing on the final shutdown message.
Mods are missing or startup reports absent files
Re-download the matching server pack and compare its extracted contents with the project’s described MODS, CONFIG and KUBEJS directories. Do not fill gaps by copying random files from a different release; that can create a new version mismatch.
The process runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
Check the heap setting, the host’s total available memory and other applications competing for resources. Observe whether the problem occurs during startup, when many chunks are explored, or after long uptime. Reduce unrelated workloads and make sure the server has room beyond its heap for the operating system. If the machine cannot provide the project’s published starting allocation reliably, move the server to a larger host rather than repeatedly forcing the same configuration.
Friends cannot connect
- Compare each client’s release, Minecraft version and Forge loader with the server.
- Confirm that the server has completed startup and is not stopped at an EULA or error prompt.
- For a home host, recheck the firewall permission, local address and router rule.
- For a private network, confirm that every player is connected to the same virtual network and is using the correct private address.
- For managed hosting, confirm the provider deployed the intended server-pack version and that the service is running.
The pack documentation establishes version compatibility, but it does not define one universal networking setup. Treat router, firewall, VPN and provider control-panel behavior as host-specific.
A managed deployment is not the expected pack
Compare the control panel’s displayed Minecraft, Forge and modpack values with the release you purchased. If they differ, stop the server before changing files and contact the provider’s support channel; CurseForge identifies Shockbyte as the provisioning and support provider in its documented hosted flow.
Update or roll back without risking the world
Modpack updates can change mods, scripts and configuration as well as client files. Use this order whenever you move between releases:
- Record the current release, Minecraft version and Forge build.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world,
MODS,CONFIG,KUBEJSand server scripts to a separate backup location. - Read the target release’s server-pack notes and identify its matching Forge version.
- Extract the new server pack into a new directory when possible, rather than overwriting the known-good installation.
- Test the updated server with a copy of the world before inviting the group.
- Have every player update to the same client release only after the server test succeeds.
If the update fails, stop the new instance and restore the previous server directory and backup. Keeping old and new installations separate makes a rollback much safer than trying to reconstruct deleted files.
Which hosting method should you choose?
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a computer that can remain online and meet the project’s memory recommendation.
- You are comfortable with firewall, router or private-network configuration.
- You want full access to files, scripts, backups and world-management tools.
- Your group is small enough that home upload capacity and occasional maintenance are acceptable.
Choose managed hosting when
- You want the server online without leaving a home computer running.
- Your group needs a shareable CurseForge import flow rather than manual installation instructions.
- You prefer provider support for provisioning, infrastructure and network availability.
- You accept a recurring fee and provider-specific file, backup and region policies.
Bottom line
The reliable recipe is exact matching: select one The Pioneers release, download its server pack, use the Forge version it specifies, launch the supplied script, and make every client identical. Self-hosting is the lower-cost, higher-control route when you can manage memory and networking. Managed hosting is easier for groups that value provisioning and connection sharing, provided you verify the provider’s current support for your chosen release before purchase.
