How to Identify an Unknown Video Game Cartridge, Disc, or Prototype

Start by documenting the object exactly as it is, then compare its platform, serial or product code, region, version, and packaging details with preservation and release catalogs. A matching database entry is a strong lead, not proof that your physical copy is the same revision. An unusual label or shell is not proof of a prototype; that requires corroborating evidence.

Document the item before you clean, open, or test it

Record what is visible before handling the item further. Cleaning can remove marks, opening a cartridge can disturb evidence, and powering up unfamiliar media is not necessary for an initial identification. Photograph the front, back, spine, packaging, inserts, and any labels or markings on the media itself. Keep the original files and make sure small text is legible.

Transcribe text exactly, including unusual spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. Record each identifier separately rather than reducing it to a guessed title:

  • Visible game title, including any subtitle or language-specific title
  • Platform logos and any publisher or developer names
  • Serial numbers, product codes, and other printed codes
  • Barcode and region marks
  • Language, version, or revision text
  • Packaging and insert details, including differences between the package and the media label
  • Physical observations such as a handwritten note, blank label, or unusual marking

Keep observations separate from conclusions. For example, write “handwritten code on rear label” rather than “prototype label.” If you share photographs publicly, obscure any exposed serial key or registration code. Cataloging standards such as MobyGames’ emphasize verifiable details and distinguishing release and media information, rather than treating an unverified label as fact.

Establish the likely platform and media type

Use the connector, cartridge shell, disc format, or case as a clue, not as identification by itself. Generic shells and cases can be reused, replaced, or paired with media from a different release. Look for a platform logo or printed product code and compare it with the rest of the object. If the packaging and the media appear to point to different platforms or titles, record that mismatch rather than assuming one is correct.

For a disc, distinguish the outer packaging from the actual disc. For a cartridge, distinguish the label and shell from any information visible on its board; do not open it solely to resolve an uncertain title. A physical feature can narrow the possibilities, but title, serial, region, and version clues are more useful for matching a particular release.

Search catalogs using the strongest identifier

For optical discs

Redump is the primary disc-preservation lookup route covered here. Search using the title, a foreign or regional title, or the disc serial printed on the disc. If you already have a verified dump, its hash can also be searched. Treat the result as a candidate: Redump cautions that a search result does not rule out a revision or a new disc.

For cartridges and ROM-oriented records

No-Intro provides an online database and DAT resources that can help cross-check cartridge-oriented releases and ROMs. Search using the exact title and any visible product or serial code where available. A database or DAT match may help identify a release, but it does not by itself verify that a particular physical cartridge has the same contents or history.

For release and catalog context

MobyGames can support release cataloging and cross-checking. Use it to compare verifiable release details, but do not treat a similar title entry as confirmation of the physical item. Catalogs may describe a release at a different level of detail than a preservation record, so check whether the entry actually identifies the same media, region, or revision you are holding.

Compare a candidate match against the physical copy

Before calling an identification confirmed, compare the item with the record on all of the useful axes—not just the title. A title match can cover several regional releases, revisions, or formats. Keep your conclusion calibrated: “possible match” means the broad details align; “likely match” means the strongest identifiers align and no important contradiction is visible; “confirmed” should be reserved for a match supported by sufficiently specific evidence.

What to compare What to check
Platform and media Does the record describe the same platform and physical medium, rather than a related release or another format?
Title Does the spelling match exactly? If not, is the alternate wording documented as a regional or foreign title?
Serial or product code Does the printed identifier match the catalog entry? Preserve punctuation and leading characters when searching.
Region and language Do the region marking and language details fit the candidate release?
Version or revision Does a printed version number or other revision clue agree? Do not infer a revision from an unexplained difference alone.
Barcode and packaging Does the package correspond to the media, and do barcode and packaging details support the same release?
Disc inner-ring markings For optical media, do the small stamped codes match the candidate record or help distinguish similar discs?

Write down mismatches as carefully as matches. A package that fits a title but a disc serial that points elsewhere is not a clean identification; it may be a replacement case, a repackaged item, or a different release. Those are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions to claim without evidence.

Read disc serials and inner-ring codes

The disc serial is usually printed on the disc and is a useful first search term. Also inspect the inner ring, where very small stamped codes may provide an additional way to distinguish discs that look alike. Record the marks visible on both sides of the disc, since markings can be subtle or appear in different places. A handheld magnifying glass can help read tiny stamps; it is an optional aid, not an identification method on its own.

For PC discs, a confirmed version number may provide another useful comparison point. Do not treat a number found in a file, on a package, or in a handwritten note as a confirmed disc version unless its relationship to the actual release is established. Compare the disc serial, ring marks, title, and any version evidence together.

Decide whether the evidence supports a prototype claim

A blank or altered label, marker writing, an unfamiliar shell, or an unusual board is an observation—not proof that an item is a prototype. Retail copies can be damaged, modified, repackaged, or assembled from mismatched parts. The sources covered here do not establish one universal visual test for prototype status.

For a responsible assessment, preserve the object as found, document the markings and physical features, and seek corroboration from reliable documentation, provenance, or an experienced specialist. Provenance means evidence about where the item came from and how it passed between owners or collections; a story without supporting records should be described as an unverified account. If evidence is incomplete, report what is observable and state the confidence level rather than presenting prototype status as certain.

Use a repeatable identification record

A short worksheet makes it easier to compare catalog candidates without losing the distinction between fact and inference. Keep the original wording, photos, and source of each observation together.

  1. Record the object: note whether it is a cartridge or disc, photograph all sides and packaging, and transcribe every visible mark.
  2. List identifiers: separate title, platform, publisher or developer, serial/product code, barcode, region, language, and version information.
  3. Search the relevant catalog: use Redump for disc records, No-Intro for cartridge/ROM-oriented cross-checking, and MobyGames for release context.
  4. Compare candidates: check platform, exact title, code, region, version, packaging, medium, and—on discs—inner-ring codes.
  5. Record conflicts: note which details agree, which differ, and which are not visible or established.
  6. State a calibrated result: distinguish a possible or likely match from a confirmed identification, and distinguish an unusual object from a proven prototype.

Common identification mistakes

  • Matching only the title: multiple releases can share a title. Compare serial, region, version, medium, and packaging too.
  • Treating a database hit as physical verification: a catalog entry describes a record; your copy may be a revision or a different disc.
  • Assuming the case belongs to the disc: packaging is useful evidence but may not be original to the media inside.
  • Guessing from shell or connector shape: use those features to narrow platform possibilities, not to name a specific release.
  • Calling an odd item a prototype: describe what you can see and require corroboration before making a provenance claim.
  • Normalizing unusual text: searching a cleaned-up version of a serial or title can hide a useful clue. Preserve the exact transcription and try variants only as additional searches.

What a catalog match can and cannot establish

A catalog match can connect visible identifiers to a documented release and help distinguish similar editions. It cannot, on its own, establish that the physical item is unmodified, that its packaging is original, or that its history is known. Records may also be incomplete or change over time. The strongest identification combines specific matching identifiers with a physical comparison and an honest account of any gaps.
