Star Fox controls depend on which game and system you’re playing: the Switch 2 remake, SNES original, Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS, and Star Fox Zero on Wii U all handle movement and aiming differently. Start with the matching control set below. For the Switch 2 game, beginners can use standard button controls, adjust the Y-axis in Options, and turn on the reticle for a clear aiming reference.
First, identify your Star Fox game and platform
“Star Fox controls” does not refer to one universal layout. The control advice for the SNES original will not tell you how to aim in Star Fox Zero, and the 3DS gyro-recentering tip applies to Star Fox 64 3D, not the newer Switch 2 release. Check the game title and console before trying a button combination.

| Game | Platform | Input style and useful beginner aid |
|---|---|---|
| Star Fox (remake) | Nintendo Switch 2 | Standard button controls or mouse targeting; adjustable Y-axis direction and reticle |
| Star Fox (original) | Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) | Directional pad and buttons; Type A is the manual’s documented layout |
| Star Fox 64 3D | Nintendo 3DS | Circle pad or tilt steering; B recentres gyro control when alignment feels wrong |
| Star Fox Zero | Wii U | Two sticks plus GamePad motion aiming; a dedicated Training option |
The layouts below give the documented controls and beginner adjustments for each version. Where a control depends on a selectable configuration, mode, or option, that qualification matters. The games also offer different kinds of assistance: Switch 2 has aiming and camera options, Star Fox 64 3D lets you recenter tilt steering, and Star Fox Zero gives you a place to practise before a battle.

Nintendo describes the Switch 2 game as a remake of the Nintendo 64 game. Its listing offers standard button controls as well as mouse targeting, plus an optional Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch for players seeking a more original-game feel. That controller is an accessory, not a requirement for standard play.

The available information here does not specify the individual Switch 2 button mappings, so use the game’s own control display rather than assuming that a button from another version has the same function. You can open the in-game Options menu with +. Nintendo notes that some options cannot be changed during Battle Mode.
Set up aiming before a mission
- Open Options with + and choose the Y-axis direction that feels natural. Nintendo says the setting applies to the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine.
- Turn on the reticle if you want a visible aiming reference while lining up shots.
- If you want to try mouse targeting, switch to it in Campaign or Challenge and adjust its sensitivity to suit your preference.
- Enable button combos if you want the original game’s button-combo behavior.
For a first run, standard button controls are a straightforward starting point if mouse targeting is unfamiliar. Change one setting at a time: it is easier to tell whether an axis adjustment or sensitivity change improved your control when you have not changed several things together. If climb and dive feel reversed, try the other Y-axis direction rather than immediately switching input methods. The setting covers the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine, so the choice is not limited to one vehicle.
Options also include cockpit camera rotation. If the cockpit view feels distracting, check that setting alongside the reticle and axis direction. These adjustments address different things: the Y-axis determines how vertical input feels, the reticle supplies an aiming reference, and camera rotation changes the cockpit view. Nintendo does not document exact Switch 2 button mappings in the listing, so consult the in-game control display for individual actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere mouse targeting and co-op are available
Nintendo lists mouse targeting and co-op play—which splits piloting and gunning between two players—as features available only in Campaign and Challenge modes. Do not expect those options to carry over to Battle Mode. If a setting is unavailable while playing Battle Mode, that mode restriction may be the reason; some Options cannot be changed during a battle. The optional Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is sold separately, and Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase it.
That controller is aimed at players who want a more authentic Nintendo 64 feel, not at beginners who need special hardware to learn. Standard compatible controls are still an option. Fox, Falco, or Wolf amiibo are separate optional collectibles: Nintendo says they can provide backgrounds and emblems for the multiplayer Battle Banner, but they do not teach controls.
How do you do a barrel roll in Star Fox?
The exact input varies by installment. In the SNES original’s Type A layout, a rapid double-tap of L or R performs a complete barrel roll. In Star Fox 64 3D, the manual also describes a double-tap of L or R. Do not assume either input is the Switch 2 or Wii U command; refer to that game’s displayed controls.
SNES: use the roll for more than a turn
Nintendo’s SNES manual distinguishes holding a roll from executing a complete barrel roll: holding the roll can help the Arwing pass through a narrow space, while rapidly double-tapping a shoulder button completes the maneuver. The manual says a complete roll can reflect some laser attacks and shake off enemies clinging to the ship. Those effects are useful when the situation calls for them, but the manual does not claim that every attack can be reflected.

Practice the double-tap when there is room to see the animation and confirm which shoulder button you prefer. In a tight passage, the manual’s separate advice is to hold a roll to help get through; a double-tap is the full maneuver, not a substitute for careful steering. In other words, distinguish the roll you hold for navigating a gap from the complete barrel roll you trigger with two quick taps.
SNES Star Fox: Type A controls
The SNES manual’s control table presents Type A, while noting that other configurations can be selected on the in-game Control Select Screen. If your game is set to another configuration, the button mapping may differ.
| Input (Type A) | Function |
|---|---|
| Directional pad | Move the Arwing |
| A | Nova Bomb |
| B | Retro-rocket |
| L or R | Roll; rapid double-tap for a complete barrel roll |
| X | Speed boost |
| Y | Laser blaster |
If a listed action does not match what happens in your game, check the Control Select Screen before concluding that a button is unresponsive. This layout is specifically the manual’s Type A configuration. In particular, the SNES Type A mapping uses X for speed boost and B for retro-rocket; those are not universal boost and brake commands across the series.
Star Fox 64 3D controls and gyro steering
Star Fox 64 3D uses the Nintendo 3DS circle pad for steering, with system tilt as an alternative. Nintendo’s manual generally describes Type A controls. Its core inputs are:
| Input | Function |
|---|---|
| Circle pad or system tilt | Turn and climb or dive |
| A | Fire laser |
| B | Brake; also recentres gyro control when alignment feels wrong |
| X | Boost |
| Y | Use bombs |
| Double-tap L or R | Barrel roll |
In all-range mode, the manual also lists controls for changing point of view and performing a U-turn. Those are mode-specific actions, so consult the game’s control display when you enter that mode rather than expecting the same controls to be available throughout every stage. This is also a useful reminder that a control set can change with the mode even when you are playing the same installment.
Fix a misaligned gyro
If tilt steering no longer feels centred, return the system to a neutral position and tap B. The manual identifies this as the way to restore gyro alignment. If you prefer not to steer by tilting, use the circle pad instead. Recentring is the relevant fix for tilt alignment; it is separate from the brake function that B also serves during play.

Use team dialogue as mission guidance
Team messages can provide useful context as well as character chatter. Peppy offers strategic advice and hints about enemy weak points. During a boss fight, Slippy displays the boss’s shield gauge when he is flying with the team. Helping Falco early makes a branch to the harder route more likely; treat that as route guidance rather than a requirement for learning the controls.
For a beginner, Peppy’s hints can help direct attention toward what to do next, while Slippy’s gauge provides information about a boss’s remaining shield. Neither replaces learning movement and firing, but both can make a mission easier to read. The Falco route detail is optional: you do not need to pursue the harder branch to practise the controls.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Star Fox Zero: how do you aim?
Star Fox Zero uses a distinct Wii U GamePad scheme that combines two sticks with motion aiming. Its controls should not be transferred to the Switch 2, SNES, or 3DS versions.
| Input | Function in Star Fox Zero |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Pilot the ship |
| Right stick forward or back | Boost or brake |
| ZR | Fire |
| GamePad motion controls | Aim at enemies |
| A | Transform the ship |
Aiming is handled by moving the GamePad, while the left stick continues to pilot. That means your TV view and GamePad view are both part of the control experience: give yourself time to keep their orientations straight instead of expecting aiming to work like a conventional right-stick camera. The right stick has its own specific job in the documented scheme: push it forward or back to boost or brake. It is not the aiming control described here.
Start with Training
The official manual includes a Training option, and Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto recommended that new players try it before entering battle: “Well, that’s why we’ve made it so you don’t have to go straight into battle if you don’t want to. You can give Training a go first.” Start there if the two-stick and motion combination feels unfamiliar. Practice basic piloting while keeping the TV and GamePad views oriented, then add motion aiming and ship transformation once you are comfortable steering.
This order keeps the jobs distinct while you learn: the left stick pilots, the right stick handles boost and brake, the GamePad motion aims, and A transforms the ship. Once those actions feel familiar, combine them as the situation demands. Training is the supported place to refresh the Arwing basics; it is preferable to discovering the input scheme for the first time in the middle of a battle.

How to choose settings and practice without mixing up controls
A good first-session routine is to identify the game, select its documented control mode, and practise the core actions before a difficult stage. The details depend on the installment:
- Switch 2: begin with standard button controls if mouse targeting is new to you; use Options to set Y-axis direction and enable the reticle if useful.
- SNES: confirm Type A or your selected Control Select configuration, then practise movement, firing, boost, and the roll input.
- Star Fox 64 3D: choose circle-pad or tilt steering; if gyro alignment drifts, neutralise the system and tap B.
- Star Fox Zero: use Training before a battle to get comfortable with piloting, GamePad aiming, and the separate transformation input.
Keep the scope of each instruction in mind. A button can have different jobs across games, and an option may be limited to a particular mode. If a control does not behave as expected, first check the game and platform, then the selected control configuration or mode, and finally the game’s own control display.
The most useful comparison is not which game has one “best” control scheme, but which input style suits the system you have and the way you want to steer. The Switch 2 version offers conventional buttons, mouse targeting in selected modes, and adjustable aiming references. The SNES and Star Fox 64 3D both document a shoulder-button double-tap for the barrel roll, but their other buttons serve different functions. The 3DS version also offers tilt steering and gyro recentering; Star Fox Zero makes motion aiming central to its GamePad setup. Choose the aid that fits the game rather than trying to make every version feel alike.
Hardware is not a prerequisite for getting started. The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is an optional purchase for Switch 2 players looking for a more original-game feel, not a required beginner controller. Nintendo says it is sold separately and requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to purchase. The game’s standard button controls remain the simplest place to begin if you do not have that accessory or do not want to use mouse targeting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the controls for Star Fox?
It depends on the installment and platform. The SNES Type A layout uses the directional pad, A for Nova Bomb, B for retro-rocket, X for speed boost, Y for laser, and L or R for roll. Star Fox 64 3D uses the circle pad or tilt to steer, A to fire, B to brake, X to boost, and Y for bombs. Star Fox Zero uses the Wii U GamePad’s left stick to pilot, right stick forward/back to boost or brake, motion aiming, ZR to fire, and A to transform. Check the Switch 2 game’s own control display for individual button mappings.
How do you do a barrel roll in Star Fox?
In the SNES original’s Type A controls and in Star Fox 64 3D, rapidly double-tap L or R. The SNES manual says a complete roll can reflect some laser attacks and shake off enemies clinging to the ship. On SNES, holding a roll is also distinct from the quick double-tap and can help the Arwing pass through a narrow space.

How do you boost and brake in Star Fox?
The command changes by game. In SNES Type A, X is speed boost and B is retro-rocket. In Star Fox 64 3D, X boosts and B brakes. In Star Fox Zero, move the right stick forward or back to boost or brake. Use the in-game control display for Switch 2 rather than borrowing a mapping from another version.
How do I change or invert controls?
On Switch 2, open Options with + and choose the Y-axis direction that feels natural; it applies to the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine. You can also turn on the reticle, adjust cockpit camera rotation, and adjust mouse sensitivity when using mouse targeting in Campaign or Challenge. Some options cannot be changed during Battle Mode. On SNES, use the in-game Control Select Screen to choose a configuration.

Pilot with the left stick and aim at enemies by moving the Wii U GamePad with its motion controls. The right stick forward or back controls boost and brake, rather than serving as the aiming control described here. Try the Training option before a battle if the dual-view setup feels unfamiliar.
Can you use mouse targeting or co-op in every Switch 2 mode?
No. Nintendo lists mouse targeting and co-op—which splits piloting and gunning between two players—as Campaign and Challenge features. Some Options also cannot be changed during Battle Mode.
Do I need a Nintendo 64 Controller to play the Switch 2 Star Fox?
No. It is an optional accessory for players who want a more authentic Nintendo 64-style experience. Nintendo says it is sold separately and requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to purchase.
The Bottom Line
Before changing buttons or practising a maneuver, confirm which Star Fox game you are playing. SNES Type A and Star Fox 64 3D use a rapid L/R double-tap for a barrel roll, but boosting, braking, aiming, and beginner aids differ across the series. On Switch 2, start with standard controls and adjust Options; on Wii U, begin with Star Fox Zero’s Training mode.
