For a standalone image, use File > Import in Roblox Studio, select the image, review the settings and any warnings, then click Import. To put it on a part or union, add a Texture or Decal object and assign the imported image. A Texture repeats; a Decal stretches across the selected face.
Import an image into Studio
- Prepare your image. Roblox’s general Importer lists PNG, JPG, GIF, TGA, and BMP as supported image formats. For a standalone texture image, the focused texture specifications list PNG, JPG, TGA, and BMP; use one of those formats if you are preparing a texture specifically. Roblox’s Importer overview and texture specifications document the supported formats.
- In Studio, choose File > Import, select your image, review the import settings and warnings, then click Import. The Importer can queue multiple files.
- After import, note the image’s asset ID. Roblox assigns imported images a unique ID that you can use when applying the image.
Apply the image to a part or union
- In Explorer, add a Texture or Decal object to the target part or union.
- Select the object and choose the face it should appear on using its Face property.
- Set ColorMapContent to the imported image, or enter its asset ID.
Choose the object type based on how the image should map to the face. Roblox’s textures and decals guide covers their properties and behavior.

Both object types support tinting with Color3 and transparency with the Transparency property.
Choose texture size and quality
Roblox’s texture specifications support images up to 4096 × 4096 pixels. They suggest these example resolutions by object scale; these are recommendations, not mandatory limits for each object:

Roblox says the engine loads lower-quality versions first and raises quality according to available device resources. Matching the image size to the object can help manage memory in some cases; larger files are not automatically better for every game.
Import textures for a 3D mesh
Mesh imports can include basic textures or PBR maps. A mesh’s UV coordinates determine how an image wraps over its surface. Roblox’s specifications call for one UV set per component, with coordinates inside the 0:1 space.

Basic mesh texture
Use a basic texture assignment when one image is sufficient for the mesh’s appearance. If the imported model’s texture fails to load, follow the recovery steps below to upload the image separately and set the MeshPart’s TextureID.
PBR maps with SurfaceAppearance
For physically based rendering, add a SurfaceAppearance to the MeshPart and assign the relevant image maps. Roblox specifies these formats:

- Roughness and Metalness: single-channel grayscale, 8-bit.
The map names in Roblox’s manual rigid-accessory workflow use the suffixes _ALB, _MTL, _NOR, and _RGH for Albedo, Metalness, Normal, and Roughness, respectively. Roblox’s texture specifications describe the image and UV requirements.
Fix a mesh texture that did not load
For an imported model with a missing texture, Roblox documents a manual upload-and-assignment route. The image must clear moderation before it can be used. Roblox’s importing guide provides this recovery workflow.

- If needed, save and publish the game so Asset Manager is available.
- Open Asset Manager > Import and upload the texture image.
- Wait for moderation to clear the image.
- Select the model’s MeshPart and enter the image asset ID in TextureID.
For an imported rigid accessory that uses PBR maps, import the map images through Asset Manager, add SurfaceAppearance to the MeshPart, then assign the images to ColorMap, MetalnessMap, NormalMap, and RoughnessMap.

Its documented Decal/Image entries accept PNG, JPEG, BMP, and TGA, with an image-size ceiling below 8000 × 8000 pixels for that endpoint. Roblox notes that beta endpoints may change.
