Adding a mod to your Bethesda.net library is not the same as installing it. Use Add to Library on the website if you want to queue it there, then open Fallout 4 and download it through the in-game Creations menu—or Mods in versions that still use that label.
Install a Fallout 4 mod from Bethesda.net
- Find the mod. Browse Fallout 4 mods on Bethesda.net or look through the in-game menu. Read the mod description for requirements and any load-order instructions before installing. Bethesda’s installation guidance specifically says to check the Creation’s description for load-order requirements: How do I install and play a Fallout 4 Creation?
- Add it to your library online (optional). On the mod’s Bethesda.net page, select Add to Library. This puts the item in your in-game library; it does not itself download the files to your game. Bethesda explains why the website may not show a download option in its support article about adding mods from the website.
- Open Fallout 4 and sign in. From the main menu, choose Creations or Mods, depending on the label in your version. Sign in to Bethesda.net or follow the account-link prompt if asked. Bethesda’s Xbox account-linking instructions describe signing in through the game’s Mods menu; prompts can vary by platform and update.
- Download the mod in the game. Items already in your web library may begin downloading automatically after you sign in through the game’s menu. If the mod does not download, find and select it in Creations/Mods and choose Download. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 mod instructions cover finding and downloading mods in game.
- Set the load order if the mod author requires it. Open Load Order in the Creations menu and arrange the mod as its description specifies. There is no single load order that is right for every collection.
- Start or load a game. Once installation is complete, load a save or start a new game.
Creations or Mods: which menu should you use?
Bethesda’s newer support instructions call the in-game menu Creations, while older support pages and some game versions call it Mods. Use the label displayed in your copy of Fallout 4; both refer to the in-game route for accessing and managing mods.

Check console storage before downloading
Storage capacities differ by console. Bethesda’s May 27, 2026 Fallout 4 patch notes list these Creation storage capacities:

These are the capacities Bethesda listed in that 2026 update, not guarantees that every listed gigabyte is available for a particular download. Bethesda notes that on PS4, a Creation’s download size may not match the space it uses, and system partitions can limit large downloads. The same August 18, 2026 update raised Fallout 4’s BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024 to better accommodate larger mod collections.

Troubleshoot download and menu problems
There is no website download button
That is expected: Add to Library adds the mod to your in-game library. Sign in through Fallout 4’s Creations/Mods menu; the item may download automatically. If it does not, locate it in the menu and choose Download.
“This Operation could not be completed” or Creations will not load
Start with checks that do not remove local data:
- Check whether a mod is outdated or has been removed, and review the load order.
- Check Bethesda service status and your platform’s network connection.
- Restart the game and platform; if needed, restart network equipment.
Bethesda lists further PC, Xbox, and PlayStation steps in its Creations access troubleshooting guide. More disruptive steps—such as moving files, clearing reserved space, or reinstalling—can remove local mod data. Back up or preserve relevant files and save data, and confirm the game’s installation path before changing files.

Platform-specific recovery steps
- PC: Bethesda’s guide describes backing up or removing manifest files in the game’s Mods folder and the Fallout 4 folder in local AppData. Its example path is Steam-specific, so verify your own installation path before moving or deleting anything.
- Xbox: Bethesda suggests signing out and back in, resetting the cache, checking network settings, and—if needed—reinstalling or clearing the game’s Reserved Space. Clearing Reserved Space deletes local mod data; it is not the same as deleting a save file. See Bethesda’s Xbox storage guidance.
- PlayStation: Check PlayStation Network status and your connection before trying further network troubleshooting or reinstalling. Menu labels can vary between console generations.
The game hangs after activating mods on console
Bethesda advises avoiding a large batch of new mods at once. If Fallout 4 will not load after activating many mods, its console loading troubleshooting article recommends clearing Xbox Reserved Space or, on PlayStation, uninstalling and reinstalling the game. On Xbox, select Reserved Space carefully; do not delete the actual save file.
