To improve PC game performance, first determine whether you have persistently low frame rates or brief stutters: a steady CPU or GPU limit calls for different changes than a temporary shader-compilation hitch. Compare the same scene before changing settings, then adjust one likely cause at a time. The right result depends on the game, hardware, driver and display; no setting guarantees a fixed FPS gain.

Low FPS or stuttering: identify the symptom first

Average FPS describes how quickly frames are produced over time. Stuttering is an uneven delivery of frames, often felt as a short hitch even when the average FPS looks acceptable. You can experience both at once, but they do not necessarily have the same cause.

  • Persistently low FPS: performance is consistently below what you want in a repeatable scene. A CPU or GPU limit may be involved.
  • Intermittent stutter: brief hitches interrupt otherwise smooth play. If they began after a graphics-driver update or occur on a game’s first run, shader compilation is one possibility.

Microsoft’s discussion of Windows game performance distinguishes CPU- and GPU-limited cases, while Intel, AMD and NVIDIA document shader compilation as a potential cause of stutter. Those are useful categories, not proof of the cause in any individual game.

How to diagnose low FPS and frame-time spikes

1. Reproduce the problem

Choose a repeatable built-in benchmark or the same in-game scene. Record average FPS and, if an overlay or tool provides it, frame-time consistency. Note whether the problem is constant or made up of isolated hitches, and whether it started after a driver update or on the first launch of a game.

Keep the scene and other conditions as consistent as practical when comparing results. AMD recommends excluding the first benchmark run of a new session in affected games, because background shader compilation can influence that run.

2. Look for a likely CPU or GPU limit

Use the game’s or graphics driver’s overlay, if available, to observe CPU and GPU load, clock speeds, temperatures and frame-time behavior. Treat readings as clues: a single moment may not represent what happens during the hitch or across the whole scene.

Microsoft notes that some Windows game titles are CPU-limited, while high resolution and pixel-shader demand can put more pressure on the GPU. If reducing visual quality barely changes performance, that alone does not establish the cause; the game may be limited elsewhere.

Why does my game stutter after updating my graphics driver?

One possible reason is that the update cleared or invalidated shader data, so the game has to compile shaders again. Intel says Arc users may experience pauses after a driver update while shader processing runs in the background. NVIDIA notes that driver installation deletes its shader cache and that stuttering can occur on a first run. AMD likewise describes background shader compilation as a temporary performance concern in affected titles.

If the timing fits, allow the game to run long enough for shader processing to finish before deciding that performance has permanently worsened. AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 guidance recommends about 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring performance in affected titles. That is a vendor procedure for those cases, not a promised recovery time or an expected FPS improvement. Intel says performance should stabilize once shader processing completes.

Shader compilation is not the only possible explanation for a hitch. If stutter persists after the first runs, compare repeatable scenes and check other clues such as frame-time behavior, CPU or GPU load, clocks and temperature.

Which settings should you change?

Change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same scene. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped average FPS, frame-time consistency, or neither.

If evidence points to a GPU limit

Test a lower resolution first, or reduce the most demanding visual settings, then compare performance and image quality. Resolution and pixel-shader demand are relevant sources of GPU pressure in Microsoft’s guidance. Lowering graphics settings is less likely to help much when the game is CPU-limited.

If evidence points to a CPU limit

Do not assume that reducing every graphics setting will solve the problem. Microsoft identifies CPU performance and game systems as relevant constraints in CPU-limited titles, so a graphics-quality change may have little effect. The behavior varies by game; compare a repeatable scene rather than relying on a general rule.

If the issue is uneven frame delivery

Frame-rate caps, V-Sync and variable refresh affect more than the FPS counter. A cap can limit unnecessary rendering; synchronization choices can change tearing, presentation and input latency. NVIDIA documents a maximum frame-rate control and G-SYNC support, while AMD describes V-Sync and features such as Radeon Chill.

There is no universally best combination. Where the game offers suitable controls, start there, then compare settings in the game and on your display. Consider whether the result improves smoothness without introducing unwanted tearing or latency, and whether it affects power use or heat.

When do temperatures justify a cooling change?

Consider cooling only when monitoring or other reliable evidence points to a thermal constraint, such as throttling or clocks being affected by temperature. AMD lists operating temperature and system power among factors that can affect CPU clock speeds.

If temperatures support that diagnosis, inspect case airflow and check that any proposed cooling change is compatible with the system. A compatible PC case fan may be one option when airflow is inadequate, but it is not a general FPS booster. It will not fix shader compilation, and unexplained stutter alone is not evidence that a fan is needed.

Can shaders be cached or precompiled?

Shader caching and precompilation depend on the platform and supported software. NVIDIA’s documentation describes a shader cache, and its guidance notes that installing a driver clears that cache. AMD also documents shader-cache settings. Avoid assuming that a cache option or precompilation feature is available on every PC or works identically across games.

Some newer precompilation options have narrower requirements. Intel says its precompiled shader distribution is disabled by default on supported systems. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery requires compatible Windows, GPU, driver and storefront support. If the feature is unavailable in your setup, use the game’s normal shader-processing behavior rather than treating a missing option as a fault.

Should you upgrade hardware?

Do not buy hardware based only on a low FPS number or an isolated hitch. First reproduce the problem and check whether the evidence points to a sustained CPU or GPU limit, shader processing, or a thermal constraint. A hardware change is more defensible when the measured bottleneck matches the part you plan to change; the sources cited here do not establish a particular component upgrade or guaranteed performance gain.

  • If the stutter follows an update or first launch, give shader processing time before considering a purchase.
  • If lower resolution or demanding visual settings improve a repeatable GPU-limited scene, graphics performance may be the relevant constraint.
  • If visual reductions do little in a CPU-limited game, do not assume a graphics upgrade will address the problem.
  • If temperatures and clocks indicate thermal throttling, investigate cooling and compatibility before replacing parts.
