How to Improve Frame Rate in Console Games Without Making Them Look Worse

Start with the game’s performance options, then check whether your console, display and connection support 120Hz or VRR. Learn what each choice can change in image quality.

Start with the game’s own Performance or frame-rate mode, then enable 120Hz output or variable refresh rate (VRR) only if the game, console, display, and connection support it. Higher frame-rate targets can reduce internal resolution or visual detail, so compare modes during actual gameplay and keep the one whose tradeoff feels right. No setting can guarantee both a higher frame rate and an identical image in every game.

Start with the game’s frame-rate options

Open the game’s video, display, graphics, or gameplay settings and look for options such as Performance, Frame Rate, Visuals, or Quality. Choose the higher-frame-rate option if responsiveness is your priority, then check demanding scenes as well as menus or quiet areas. A console preset can express a preference, but it does not guarantee that every game offers or follows the same options.

What a mode changes depends on the game. Bethesda says Starfield’s Performance priority lowers internal resolution and detail for effects, lighting, and crowds, while Visuals priority keeps the highest resolution and full detail. Both modes may dynamically adjust internal resolution when scenes or action become heavier. These are Starfield-specific choices, not universal Xbox settings. Bethesda’s Starfield settings guidance describes the available options.

Compare the picture and motion in the same situations

  • Look for changes to fine detail, effects, lighting, crowds, or other features the game identifies.
  • Pay attention to whether motion feels more responsive and whether the target remains steady in busy scenes.
  • If the image compromise is too noticeable, return to the other mode. A higher target is not automatically the better choice for every player or game.

Understand what resolution and upscaling mean

The resolution sent to your TV or monitor is not necessarily the resolution at which the game renders every frame. A game can render internally at a lower resolution, then upscale or reconstruct the image for a sharper full-screen output. Microsoft’s developer guidance recommends this approach as a way to preserve perceived image quality while reducing rendering demands; it also advises keeping user-interface text at native resolution for legibility. How well the result looks depends on the game’s implementation. Microsoft’s graphics guidance explains these rendering considerations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For that reason, a lower internal resolution does not always mean the output will look obviously worse. But upscaling cannot guarantee an unchanged image, and a game may also reduce effects or detail to meet its performance target. Judge the actual game rather than assuming that a mode label or output-resolution number tells the whole story.

Use 120Hz and VRR when the whole setup supports them

120Hz is a display refresh-rate capability; it is not a promise that a game renders 120 frames per second. The game must offer the relevant frame-rate option, the console must output a compatible signal, and the display and connection must support the chosen mode. Check your display’s specifications and the console’s video settings before changing hardware or assuming a game can reach a particular target.

VRR synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the console’s graphical output. PlayStation says this can reduce frame-pacing artifacts and screen tearing, but the result varies by TV, game, and visual mode. VRR can smooth presentation when frame delivery varies; it does not itself make a game render more frames. PlayStation’s VRR explanation describes the feature and its qualifications.

PlayStation 5

PS5 detects a TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. To inspect or change output, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Resolution can be set to Automatic or to a supported value. Both the display and the game must support 120Hz for 120Hz gameplay; VRR also requires a supported display and game. ALLM can switch a compatible TV to a low-latency mode during gameplay. PlayStation says applying VRR to unsupported games can produce varying results; turn it off if you encounter unexpected behavior. PlayStation’s PS5 display guide covers these settings.

Xbox Series X|S

Options vary by game. In Fortnite, Epic instructs Xbox Series X|S players to enable 120Hz in TV & Display Options, then switch on 120 FPS in Fortnite’s Video settings. On PS5, Epic’s instructions are to choose the Performance Mode game preset and then enable Fortnite’s 120 FPS mode. If the option is absent, the game or connected setup may not support it; Epic also warns that an AV setup without 4K at 120Hz could affect output resolution. Epic’s Fortnite 120 FPS instructions give the game-specific steps.

Starfield is a different example: Bethesda documents 30, 40, 60, or Uncapped frame-rate targets on a 120Hz VRR display, while a setup without that display support has 30 or 60 targets. Bethesda recommends Performance priority for 60 fps and above, and notes that 60 on a non-VRR display may tear. These settings apply to Starfield, not to Xbox games generally. Bethesda’s Starfield guidance lists the modes and their tradeoffs.

Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch family

On Nintendo Switch 2, display output can reach 2160p. Nintendo says 120Hz output is supported only at 1080p or 1440p, and only when both the TV and software support it. VRR is described for compatible software and TV while playing in TV Mode. Nintendo’s Switch 2 display-settings instructions explain the conditions.

Do not apply those 120Hz or VRR claims to the original Switch or Switch OLED. Nintendo documents their TV output choices as Automatic, 480p, 720p, or 1080p; Switch Lite does not support TV Mode. Nintendo’s original Switch TV-settings page describes that family’s options.

Troubleshoot a missing or unstable 4K 120Hz signal on PS5

If the console or display does not show the expected 4K 120Hz signal, check the entire signal path. Sony’s guidance calls out the following possibilities:

  • Confirm that the display supports 4K at 120Hz and has current firmware.
  • Use the PS5’s included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz.
  • Connect the console directly to the display, or check whether an AV receiver or other intermediary supports the signal.
  • Use the display’s correct HDMI port; some sets support the feature only on particular inputs.
  • Review PS5 resolution and transfer-rate settings, and enable the corresponding enhanced HDMI format on the TV if required.

Sony’s PS5 display guide covers console output and troubleshooting. TV input labels and menus differ by model; the manufacturer’s instructions are the relevant reference for enabling an enhanced format. Sony’s HDMI input guidance provides one manufacturer example.

Decide whether a display upgrade would help

Try the game and console settings first. A 120Hz VRR display can enable compatible modes if your current screen is the limiting factor, but it cannot make a game render faster on its own. Before buying anything, verify support for the particular game, console, desired resolution and refresh rate, TV or monitor input, and any intermediary equipment. A new cable is not automatically necessary: Sony says the PS5’s included cable or a suitable Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable can carry 4K 120Hz, provided the rest of the setup supports it.
