Most wireless-headset audio problems on PlayStation are fixed by checking the selected devices, mute state, microphone level, and game/chat balance in that order. Echo and wireless dropouts need separate fixes: lower the microphone level for echo, and address USB-device placement or the network connection for interruptions. The exact controls differ between PS5, PS4, and headset models, so use the section for your console and headset rather than treating one setting as universal.
Start by identifying the symptom
Do not raise every volume slider at once. A microphone that is quiet, a game that masks party chat, an echo, and a wireless connection that skips are different faults. Identify the first symptom that matches what you hear or what other players report.

| Symptom | First checks | What the check changes |
|---|---|---|
| Other players cannot hear you | Selected input device, headset mute, retractable microphone position, and the input meter | Microphone signal reaching the console |
| Your voice is too quiet or distorted | Microphone level and mute status | Input gain; it does not increase game volume |
| You hear your own voice or other players hear feedback | Lower the microphone level; move the headset away from speakers; reset if necessary | Feedback caused by an overly sensitive or acoustically exposed microphone |
| You hear game audio but not chat | Voice-chat balance and party/game-chat status | Relative level of chat and game output |
| You hear chat but the game is too loud | Game/chat balance controls | Relative level of game and chat output |
| Audio cuts out or the headset disconnects | USB 3.0 devices, adapter placement, headset reset, and (for chat disconnections) the internet connection | Wireless-adapter environment or online voice connection |
These steps are based on PlayStation Support guidance for PS5 and PS4 and on instructions for specific wireless headset models. They are not a universal map for Xbox, Windows, macOS, or every headset.
1. Verify the selected input and output devices
PS5: choose the output device first
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Check Output Device and select the connected wireless headset when it is listed. This determines where game and chat sound are sent.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Check Input Device and select the headset microphone rather than an unintended controller or another connected device.
Changing output does not change microphone input, and changing input does not alter game volume. Verify both menus before moving to advanced controls.

PS4: use the different audio-device menu
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Check the selected input and output devices in that menu.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level when you need to test or change the microphone input.
PS4 does not use the PS5 menu path above. Following PS5 instructions on a PS4 can leave the relevant control undiscovered.
Check the physical mute state
Make sure the headset’s mute switch or button is off. Also check the controller mute state if the console is using its microphone. A muted headset can still play game audio, which makes this mistake easy to overlook.
2. Confirm that the microphone is actually producing a signal
PS4 input-meter test
On PS4, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. PlayStation says the Input Volume bar should react to your voice. If it does not move, the console is not receiving usable input from the selected device.

That comparison helps isolate whether the original headset, the controller, or the console’s selected input is at fault. Do not compensate for a dead input by pushing the level higher; gain cannot create a signal that the console is not receiving.
PS5 level check
On PS5, use Settings > Sound > Microphone to confirm the selected input and watch the microphone-level response while speaking. Keep the headset microphone in its normal speaking position and make sure it is not retracted or muted. If another connected input responds instead, select the headset explicitly.
PULSE Elite: extend the microphone
For the PULSE Elite wireless headset, pull out the retractable microphone before joining chat. Its mute indicator shows the mute state: a lit indicator means the microphone is muted. If the indicator remains lit, unmute the headset before changing levels.

3. Set microphone level without creating distortion
Microphone level is an input control. It changes how strongly your voice reaches chat; it does not make game audio louder and does not fix a missing output device. Increase it only until normal speech is clear to other players. If your voice becomes harsh, clips, or triggers feedback, lower it rather than raising other controls.
On PS5, the level is under Settings > Sound > Microphone. On PS4, use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level. Make a small change, speak again, and ask a party member whether the result is clearer. Large jumps make it difficult to tell whether the problem is gain, placement, or an incorrectly selected input.
4. Balance game audio and voice chat
If both streams are working but one masks the other, use a game/chat balance control instead of changing microphone gain. The balance control changes relative output: moving it toward chat makes voices more prominent, while moving it toward game makes the game louder in comparison. The available control depends on the console, game, and headset.
PS5 voice-chat card
Open the PS5 voice-chat card while in a party or voice session and adjust its voice-chat balance controls. If the game supports its own chat mixer, that in-game setting may also affect what you hear. Check one control at a time so you know which change produced the result.
PULSE 3D headset controls
Sony’s PULSE 3D instructions identify dedicated CHAT and GAME buttons. Pressing CHAT raises the relative chat level; pressing GAME raises the relative game level. Pressing both buttons together resets the relative balance. If those buttons appear to do nothing in a particular game, the game or platform may not support that headset control in the current mode; verify the behavior before treating the headset as defective.
Do not confuse output balance with microphone level
- Microphone level: how strongly your voice is sent to chat.
- Game volume: how loud game sound is in your ears.
- Chat volume: how loud other players are in your ears.
- Game/chat balance: the relative emphasis between game and chat output.
A party that cannot hear you needs an input check, not a game-volume adjustment. A party that is audible but covered by explosions needs output balance, not more microphone gain.

5. Fix echo and feedback separately
Lower the PS5 microphone level
For echo on PS5, PlayStation’s wireless-headset troubleshooting instruction is specific: “Slide the Microphone Level fader 2 to 4 notches to the left.” Make that adjustment under Settings > Sound > Microphone, then test the party again. The instruction comes from PlayStation Support’s PS5/PS4 echo troubleshooting guidance.
Lower the PS4 microphone level
On PS4, go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and move the microphone-level slider two to four notches left. Ask the other players whether the echo has stopped before making another change.
Remove speaker feedback
The Gold Wireless Headset instruction manual warns that leaving the headset near speakers while its microphone is active can create feedback. Use the headset away from external speakers and mute the microphone when you are not speaking. This is especially important when a television or soundbar is playing the same chat audio that the microphone can pick up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReset after the level and placement checks
If echo remains after lowering the level and moving away from speakers, follow the headset’s reset procedure. PlayStation lists a headset reset as the next troubleshooting step for persistent echo. The exact button sequence is model-specific, so use the instructions for your headset rather than applying a sequence from another model.
6. Troubleshoot wireless dropouts and skipping
Intermittent sound is usually a connection or placement problem before it is a microphone-quality problem. Work through the free placement checks before buying a replacement headset or cable.
Remove nearby USB 3.0 devices
For PlayStation wireless headsets, Sony recommends removing USB 3.0 devices from the console when the headset disconnects or skips. This is a conditional troubleshooting suggestion, not proof that USB 3.0 is the cause in every setup. Test the headset after removing one device at a time so you can identify a change.

Separate the wireless adapter from other USB devices
If several USB devices or wireless adapters are connected, Sony suggests using a USB extension cable to create physical distance between the wireless adapter and other USB devices. Place the adapter where it has a clear, stable connection to the console and where nearby cables or hubs are not crowding it. Confirm that the connector and extension arrangement are compatible with your headset and PS5 or PS4 before purchasing an accessory.

An extension cable addresses adapter placement only. It does not improve microphone sensitivity, game volume, chat balance, or the acoustic quality of your voice.
Reset the headset if placement changes do not help
After removing or spacing USB devices, reset the headset according to its model instructions if interruptions continue. A reset is a recovery step for the wireless connection; it is not a substitute for checking the selected output and input devices.
7. Separate wireless audio faults from online chat disconnections
A headset can remain powered and still lose party chat because the internet connection is unstable. If the voice-chat icon flashes or the party disconnects, PlayStation recommends checking the internet connection and, when possible, trying a wired internet connection. This check targets the online voice path, not the headset’s local microphone or speaker hardware.
Use the symptom to choose the branch: if game audio also cuts out, investigate the wireless adapter and USB environment; if game audio remains steady but party chat drops, investigate the network connection and party status first.
8. PULSE Elite audio customization
PULSE Elite users can access equalizer (EQ) and sidetone settings through the PS5 interface or the PlayStation Link PC Driver. EQ changes the tonal balance of what you hear; sidetone controls how much of your own microphone signal is fed back to you. These options can make monitoring more comfortable, but they do not repair a muted microphone, a missing input signal, or a wireless adapter that is disconnecting.

9. A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Name the symptom. Decide whether the failure is input, output, echo, balance, wireless interruption, or online chat disconnection.
- Check mute. Inspect the headset mute control, controller mute state, and—on PULSE Elite—the retractable microphone and mute indicator.
- Select devices. On PS5, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device. On PS4, use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Test the input. On PS4, watch the Input Volume bar under Adjust Microphone Level; on PS5, watch the microphone response under Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Compare hardware if there is no response. Try another headset or controller to isolate the failed component.
- Set microphone level. Use the smallest adjustment that makes normal speech clear. Do not use this control to fix game volume.
- Set output balance. Use the PS5 voice-chat card or the controls supported by your headset, such as PULSE 3D CHAT and GAME buttons.
- Remove echo. Lower the microphone level two to four notches, move away from speakers, and reset the headset if echo persists.
- Address dropouts. Remove nearby USB 3.0 devices, separate the wireless adapter with a compatible extension cable if needed, and reset the headset.
- Check the network for party failures. If the voice-chat icon flashes or chat disconnects while local game audio is stable, test the internet connection and use wired internet when possible.
10. When replacement hardware is justified
Consider replacement only after the selected-device, mute, input-meter, level, balance, echo, and connection checks. A comparison with another headset or controller is the strongest practical way to show that the original device is failing. If another device works at the same console and settings, verify compatibility with your PS5 or PS4 before choosing a replacement.
No single replacement microphone, cable, ear pad, or headset is universally established by these troubleshooting steps. A USB extension cable is relevant only when adapter placement near USB devices is the suspected issue; it is not an upgrade to microphone quality.

Platform and model limits to keep in mind
The menu paths and named controls above come from PlayStation’s PS5 and PS4 instructions. Xbox, Windows, macOS, other consoles, and third-party headsets can place equivalent functions under different labels or omit them entirely. A control shown on PULSE 3D or PULSE Elite should not be assumed to exist on another model.
Likewise, no comparative testing establishes that one headset has universally better microphone quality, lower latency, or stronger wireless range. The reliable approach is symptom-led: select the right devices, prove that the input meter reacts, set the level, balance the two output streams, then isolate echo, adapter placement, or network causes according to the failure you can reproduce.
