If a Nintendo DS game will not start, first power off the system and reseat the card without forcing it. If it starts but will not save, treat that as a separate problem: Nintendo says DS and DSi game saves do not use backup batteries. Test another licensed card to help determine whether the problem follows one game or stays with the console.
If the game will not start or the DS says no card is inserted
Insert the Game Card correctly
- Turn the DS off before inserting or removing a Game Card.
- Hold the card with its label facing down and slide it into the slot until it clicks. It should go in easily; do not force it.
- Turn on the system. If it is set to manual startup, select the rectangle or Game Card slot indicator to launch the game.
Nintendo provides these insertion and startup directions in its Game Card instructions.
Check whether the card or the console is the likely source
Try a different, known-working, licensed DS game in the same system. If available, try the suspect card in another DS as well. These cross-tests are clues, not proof of a specific failure:
- If several known-working cards fail in one DS, the system or card slot becomes a stronger suspect.
- If only one card fails, and other cards work in the same DS, that particular card becomes a stronger suspect.
- If the suspect card also fails in another DS, the fault is more likely to follow the card than the original console.
Nintendo’s Game Card troubleshooting recommends checking how many games are affected and trying another system when possible.

Inspect the card and slot
With the system off, look for visible dirt or bent pins on the card’s connector contacts, and check the slot for foreign material. Remove unlicensed accessories while testing; Nintendo says unlicensed products are not tested for compatibility and may not work correctly with all games. Bent or contaminated pins can stop a game from working and may damage the DS, so do not force a card or probe the slot with a metal object. Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting also advises checking the card and slot.
If you can see contamination on the card terminals, Nintendo Japan suggests trying terminal cleaning as a possible step. Its guidance does not endorse a particular product or establish that cleaning can repair damaged save hardware or recover lost progress. Avoid assuming a cleaning kit, liquid, abrasive, or disassembly method is safe based on that general advice.

If the game starts but will not save
Do not assume the cartridge has a dead backup battery
Nintendo Japan states that backup batteries are not used to save Nintendo DS or DSi software. A cartridge “save battery” is therefore not the explanation Nintendo gives for a DS/DSi save failure. Nintendo does note that dirty cartridge terminals can interfere with saving; its answer recommends trying terminal cleaning, but does not promise that this will restore a damaged save chip or recover data that has disappeared.
See Nintendo Japan’s answer about backup batteries in game software. The statement covers DS/DSi and several later Nintendo systems; it is not a claim about every older Nintendo cartridge.

Check the game’s own saving method
Follow the title’s instructions for saving. Some games require a menu command or allow saving only at particular points; the exact method depends on the game. If progress is missing or corrupted, the official guidance cited here does not provide a universal method for recovering a DS cartridge save, so do not assume that repeated restarts will restore it.
Avoid rapid power cycling
Use a normal shutdown and measured tests rather than repeatedly switching the DS on and off in quick succession. Nintendo warns that rapid power cycling may shorten the handheld battery’s life and cause Game Cards to lose stored game information. Its warning appears in the DS and DS Lite safety precautions.

When to consider another system or card
If the problem follows one card while other games work in the same console, replacing that card may be the more relevant option. If several known-working cards fail in the same DS, the system is a stronger suspect. These results narrow the possibilities but do not identify a failed component with certainty.
Nintendo says it no longer accepts service requests for the original DS and points users toward replacing the system if troubleshooting does not resolve recognition problems. Nintendo also says DSi and 3DS systems are compatible with nearly the entire DS library. Check compatibility for the particular game and any special peripheral before choosing a used replacement; current stock, condition, repair options, and prices vary by region. See Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting page.

What a DS Lite battery figure does—and does not—mean
Nintendo’s 2006 DS Lite manual says the handheld’s rechargeable battery may have only 70% of new capacity after 500 recharges. That figure concerns the console’s power battery, not Game Card reliability or cartridge save memory, and does not support replacing a game’s battery. See the Nintendo DS Lite Operations Manual.
