If those don’t explain the slowdown, isolate Wi-Fi, installation activity, and time-of-day effects before changing hardware or your internet plan.
First, check what Steam’s speed number means
Internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second, while Steam may show downloads in bytes per second. Since one byte is eight bits, the numbers can look very different even when they describe the same throughput. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6144 Kb/s = 6 megabits per second; it illustrates the conversion, not a benchmark or expected speed. A speed shown in your computer’s system tray or network properties is generally the link rate between your device and the local network, not measured internet throughput. Compare Steam’s rate with your plan or a current internet speed test, converting units first.
Test Steam’s download region
Steam selects content servers based on your location, but a nearby server can be slow or overloaded. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and check Download Region. Start with your home region, then try a few nearby regions if downloads remain slow. Compare them under similar conditions; a distant region is not automatically faster. Steam’s connection troubleshooting and its guidance for servers that are unavailable or too busy both point to trying a different, relatively close region.

Make room for other household traffic
When other people need the connection, a Steam bandwidth limit can leave capacity for calls, video, or browsing. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and set a limit appropriate for your household. Check whether Steam is displaying bytes or bits per second before choosing a value, so the cap is not eight times higher or lower than intended. See Steam’s instructions for setting client rates.
If automatic updates repeatedly start during busy hours, schedule them for a quieter time in the Downloads settings. You can also reorder queued items in the Download Manager. These changes manage contention; they do not increase the capacity of your internet plan. Steam covers download and update controls in Managing Steam Downloads & Updates.

Separate Wi-Fi problems from internet congestion
A busy household can expose a weak or congested wireless link as well as a saturated internet connection. If your router and device support multiple bands, compare the available 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz networks. A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi interference is part of the problem; Steam Deck requires additional hardware for USB-C-to-Ethernet.

Router menus vary, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions if you are unsure how to make or reverse that change. A wired connection or adapter is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed speed upgrade: neither fixes an overloaded Steam region or an internet connection already at capacity. Steam’s network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers these tests.

Check whether the device is installing, not just downloading
Steam may be unpacking, patching, or writing files while a download is in progress. CPU, disk, or SD card write speed can constrain that work, and Steam notes that download rate may be throttled to keep pace with installation tasks. The Download Manager’s rate alone therefore does not prove that the internet connection is the bottleneck.
Watch whether the reported rate changes as CPU or storage activity changes. A slow SD card can affect total installation time. Don’t assume a faster drive will improve a download that is limited by network capacity.

Use client troubleshooting when Steam itself seems stuck
If Steam downloads or installations have developed a persistent problem, restart Steam and the computer, then check whether software that monitors or modifies disk or network activity may be interfering. You can also clear Steam’s download cache: open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam says this removes locally cached configuration data, does not affect installed games, and requires you to log in again afterward. It is a troubleshooting step, not a promised way to speed up a healthy connection. Follow Steam’s cache-clearing instructions if the client’s labels differ.
Find out whether the slowdown is regional or time-dependent
Check Steam’s network status if multiple Steam services fail or time out, and compare download performance at another time of day. If the slowdown repeatedly occurs only during particular hours, Steam says ISP blocking or traffic shaping is possible. Keep a simple record of when it happens and whether other internet activity is also affected; if the pattern persists, contact your internet provider. Steam’s network connectivity guidance discusses time-of-day slowdowns, while its server troubleshooting page points to checking network status.
