If Windows 10 feels slow, work through the causes in order: install available Windows and driver updates, scan for malware, reclaim storage, remove software you do not use, control startup and background activity, then adjust visual and power settings. If the computer is still constrained, check whether its hard drive or memory is the bottleneck; older hardware may need an upgrade rather than more cleanup.

These steps can make a measurable difference when a specific resource is overloaded, but there is no universal speed increase. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so a faster installation is not a substitute for moving to a supported operating system or device.

Why a Windows 10 PC becomes slow

Microsoft identifies several common causes: limited storage, too many startup or background applications, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current demands. More than one can be present at the same time, which is why one cleanup action rarely solves every case.

  • Low free space: Windows needs working room for updates, temporary files, caches and paging. A nearly full system drive can make ordinary operations feel sluggish.
  • Startup and background load: Programs that launch with Windows consume memory and processor time before you open anything. Their services may continue running while you work.
  • Outdated software or drivers: Updates can correct compatibility and performance problems, although Windows 10 no longer receives free Microsoft software and security updates after October 14, 2025.
  • Malware: Unwanted software can consume CPU, memory or disk resources and may cause intermittent freezes.
  • Hardware limits: A mechanical hard drive, insufficient memory or an older processor can remain the limiting factor after software changes.

Start by identifying the symptom rather than deleting files at random. Note whether the delay is most obvious during boot, when launching applications, while browsing files, during game loading, or only when the disk reaches 100 percent activity. Also record whether the problem is constant or intermittent; that distinction helps you compare each change.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence

Make one group of changes, restart when requested, and test the same task again. This gives you a useful before-and-after comparison and makes it easier to undo a change that causes a new problem.

1. Install Windows and optional driver updates

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install anything offered.
  3. Open View optional updates when that link appears. Review driver updates that match your hardware and install appropriate ones.
  4. Restart the PC, even if Windows does not insist on a restart, then repeat the task that was slow.

On a Windows 10 installation after the support end date, Windows Update will not provide the free software updates, technical assistance or security fixes Microsoft previously supplied. You may still see device-specific updates from your manufacturer or other installed software, but do not treat their availability as ongoing Windows 10 support.

2. Run a Windows Security malware scan

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Quick scan.
  3. Let the scan finish. If it reports a detection, follow Windows Security’s removal or quarantine instructions and restart.

Malware can keep CPU and disk usage high even when no visible application is open. If the quick scan reports nothing but the same unexplained load continues, record the process name in Task Manager before deciding on further action; do not install several security products at once.

3. Free space with Storage settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review the system drive’s capacity and the categories using the most space.
  3. Select Temporary files, examine each category, and remove only items you understand. Leave personal files unchecked unless you have a separate backup and are certain they are no longer needed.
  4. Return to Storage and turn on Storage Sense if you want Windows to manage temporary files automatically. Storage Sense operates on the system drive and can remove temporary files and selected Recycle Bin content according to its settings.

Storage Sense and Temporary files cleanup are safer starting points than manually deleting folders inside Windows or your profile. Deleting temporary data can help when the drive is nearly full, but removing files by itself does not guarantee a faster computer. Check the result in File Explorer and keep enough free capacity for updates and the applications you use.

4. Remove applications you no longer use

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Sort the list by size or installation date.
  3. Select an application you recognize and no longer need, choose Uninstall, and complete its own uninstaller.
  4. Restart if the uninstaller requests it, then test your normal workload.

Do not remove hardware drivers, Microsoft components, security software or a program whose purpose you cannot identify merely because it appears large. When uncertain, search the exact publisher and product name first or leave it installed until you can verify its role.

5. Reduce startup and background activity

Startup programs affect boot time and can continue consuming resources after the desktop appears.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select the Startup or Startup apps tab.
  3. Review the Startup impact column. Select only an item you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in, then choose Disable.
  4. Restart and check whether boot and application launch times improve. Re-enable an item if a feature you depend on stops working.

Disabling startup does not uninstall a program; it prevents automatic launch, and you can still open the application manually. Avoid disabling drivers, input utilities, backup tools or security components without understanding the consequences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some apps also offer background permissions. Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Background apps and turn off background access for apps that do not need to update or notify you while closed. The setting is available only for apps that support it, so it will not control every desktop program or service.

6. Find the bottleneck in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. On Processes, click the CPU, Memory or Disk column to sort by current use.
  3. Use Performance to watch CPU, memory, disk and network graphs while you reproduce the slowdown.
  4. On Startup apps, note items with high startup impact before deciding what to disable.
  5. Close only an application you recognize and are not using: select it, then choose End task. Save your work first.

A high, sustained CPU percentage points toward a demanding application or service; nearly full memory may cause paging; and persistent disk activity can indicate a busy process or a slow storage device. Task Manager is a diagnostic view, not a list of processes that are safe to terminate. Ending a system process can make Windows unstable or cause data loss, so investigate an unfamiliar name before acting.

Adjust Windows for responsiveness

Reduce visual effects

  1. Open Start and search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  2. Open the matching control-panel result.
  3. On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance, or clear only effects you do not value.
  4. Select Apply, then test window movement and application responsiveness.

This reduces animations, shadows and other polish. It can make an older system feel more responsive, but the desktop will look less refined. If the change is not useful, return to Let Windows choose what is best for my computer or restore individual effects.

Choose a suitable power mode

On a plugged-in laptop or desktop, a higher-performance power plan can favor responsiveness. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select an available high-performance plan, or use Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.

Use this only when the trade-offs are acceptable. Higher performance can increase power consumption, reduce laptop battery life and produce more heat or fan noise. For battery operation, a balanced plan is usually the safer baseline; compare the same task on each setting rather than leaving the most aggressive plan enabled permanently.

Optimize the storage device safely

  1. Open Start and search for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  2. Select the relevant drive and choose Analyze or Optimize as offered.
  3. Allow Windows to complete its built-in operation and keep its schedule enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it.

Windows handles solid-state drives differently from traditional hard drives. Do not force a manual defragmentation workflow or use an unrelated utility to repeatedly defragment an SSD; use the built-in optimizer, which applies the appropriate operation for the drive type.

When software cleanup is not enough

Microsoft notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from software changes. At that point, identify the constrained component before buying anything.

Check whether storage is the limit

A mechanical hard drive can be the slowest part of an otherwise usable PC, especially during boot, application launches and file searches. An internal SSD is a concrete upgrade candidate, but compatibility is specific to the computer. Confirm the exact model’s interface and form factor, available mounting space, operating-system support and whether the drive is user-replaceable. A common category is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, but it is not suitable for every Windows 10 device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check memory capacity and upgrade limits

Use Task Manager’s Performance > Memory view while opening the programs you normally use. If memory remains nearly full and disk activity rises as you switch between applications, additional RAM may help. Check the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity, module type, number of slots and whether memory is soldered before ordering a module. Installing an incompatible module will not solve the bottleneck.

Compare an upgrade using the right criteria

Criterion What to verify
Interface and form factor Whether the PC accepts 2.5-inch SATA, an M.2 device or another standard; confirm the connector and physical clearance.
Capacity Enough room for Windows, applications and working files, with free space left for normal operation.
Workload Read and write needs for your applications; do not assume a specification aimed at one workload predicts every result.
Warranty and power use Review the manufacturer’s terms and the device’s power requirements, especially for a laptop.
Replaceability Whether the storage or memory is accessible and whether opening the chassis affects your warranty or requires professional service.

Back up personal data before replacing a drive. A hardware upgrade can remove a storage or memory bottleneck, but no responsible guide can promise a particular percentage improvement without testing the exact computer and workload.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

Slow boot but normal performance afterward

  • Review Startup apps and disable unnecessary high-impact entries.
  • Check free space on the system drive.
  • Compare boot behavior after installing updates and restarting.
  • If the PC uses a hard drive, investigate an SSD upgrade after confirming compatibility.

Applications take a long time to open

  • Watch Disk and Memory in Task Manager while launching the application.
  • Close unneeded applications and browser windows before testing again.
  • Remove unused software and temporary files, then repeat the same launch test.
  • Consider storage or memory hardware if the corresponding resource remains saturated.

Disk usage stays high

  • Sort Task Manager’s Processes tab by Disk and identify a process you recognize.
  • Allow Windows Update, a security scan or the built-in drive optimizer to finish if one is actively working.
  • Run Windows Security’s Quick scan if the activity is unexplained.
  • Do not end an unfamiliar system process solely because its disk percentage is high.

The PC freezes intermittently

  • Record the time and what you were doing, then check CPU, memory and disk graphs during the next occurrence.
  • Install available Windows and optional driver updates and restart.
  • Scan with Windows Security.
  • If freezes continue on an old device, treat hardware limits or a failing component as a possibility and seek a model-specific diagnosis before replacing parts.

Windows 10’s support status matters

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. Performance tuning can make an existing installation more usable, but it cannot restore those protections. Check whether the computer can run a supported Windows release and whether the manufacturer provides compatible drivers. If it cannot, plan for a supported replacement or another operating system rather than relying indefinitely on cleanup steps.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities and unwanted applications, and provide features such as a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
