A normal portal checks every item in your inventory: one restricted material blocks the trip, while carts, boats, and tamed animals remain behind. Metals therefore still need physical transport unless your world enables Portal Items or you have the late-game Portal Stone.

How portals work in a Valheim multiplayer world
A portal is a two-way fast-travel point. Walk into one while it is linked and your character appears at its partner, preserving the normal multiplayer world state around both locations. The connection is determined by the portal tag, not by who built it or which base owns it.

A cart parked beside the entrance, a boat moored at a dock, and any tamed animal stay at the departure site. A portal is consequently a player-mobility tool rather than a cargo transporter. Teams commonly use one at a mining camp or dungeon entrance to let everyone return safely, then haul restricted resources by ship, cart, or another physical route.

Materials and unlock requirements
A standard Portal costs 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 20 Finewood, and 2 Surtling Cores. It is crafted and placed at a Workbench. The recipe becomes available after your character has obtained Finewood, a Greydwarf Eye, and a Surtling Core; merely seeing those resources in another player’s inventory does not replace collecting them yourself.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Placement procedure
- Bring the three recipe materials to a Workbench in a location where you have construction permission.
- Open the build menu, select Portal, and place it on a stable, accessible surface. Leave enough room to walk through the frame and to interact with it safely.
- Build a second standard Portal at the destination. Two portals are required before any link exists.
- Interact with each portal and enter exactly the same tag. Tags are case-sensitive and may contain no more than 10 characters, so capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and spelling must match.
- Walk through one portal to test the connection before relying on it during an expedition. If the destination is occupied, obstructed, or has a different tag, correct that site first.
For a reliable team setup, name destinations by purpose rather than by the player who built them. Short labels such as home-swamp, home-mtn, or home-plains make callouts easier, but count every character before building because the 10-character ceiling is strict.
Tag rules: why a portal sometimes goes nowhere
Exact matching is mandatory
Both ends must use the same tag with identical capitalization. Home, home, and home are different tags. If one end is blank or contains a typo, the portal remains unpaired until you edit it to the intended value.

Three portals do not make a shared hub
A tag is not a permanent lobby that all portals join. When three or more portals carry the same tag, the game separates them into two-portal links. The resulting pairing can change as portals are created, renamed, or loaded, which is especially confusing in a cooperative base.

Use a distinct tag for every destination: for example, one home-to-swamp pair, one home-to-mountain pair, and one home-to-plains pair. If your group wants a single exploration entrance, deliberately rename that portal whenever you move it instead of leaving several active portals on one tag.
Inventory restrictions on normal portals
Before a standard portal activates, it checks your entire inventory. Carrying even one blocked item prevents teleportation; the portal does not remove that object and allow the rest of your items through. Empty the offending slot, store the item in a chest, or take a physical route.
The documented restricted entries include:
- Copper, iron, silver, bronze, black metal, and their ores or scraps.
- Flametal and Flametal Ore.
- Dragon Eggs.
- Hildir chests.
- Dvergr Extractors.
- Mechanical Springs.
- Charred Cogwheels and other listed progression-material entries.
The rule applies to one piece or a full stack. A single iron scrap hidden in a spare inventory row is enough to stop the attempt, so check every slot before blaming a tag or a server connection.

What normally can travel
Non-restricted supplies can usually pass through a standard portal. Examples include wood, food, trophies, Greydwarf Eyes, Surtling Cores, and the materials used to build portals. This lets a player resupply a remote outpost, return for repairs, and bring back ordinary loot without dismantling the route.
Moving metal and other blocked cargo with a team
Because normal portals reject the materials that drive progression, multiplayer groups should separate player travel from resource logistics. Put the portal at the mine, crypt, or outpost so everyone can reach the site quickly and retreat after a dangerous run. Store the ore or other blocked items in a protected chest, then schedule a ship or cart trip to the main base.
A practical mining-outpost workflow
- Build and test a tagged portal at the outpost before beginning a long mining session.
- Leave a return chest beside it containing food, spare equipment, and portal-building materials that are allowed through.
- When your inventory contains blocked ore, walk or sail the physical route. Keep the portal available for teammates who are travelling without restricted cargo.
- Use clear signs or a shared tag list so players do not rename the active destination while a hauling run is underway.
- After the stockpile reaches the destination, relink or move the exploration end only after everyone knows the new tag.
This arrangement also limits the cost of a death: a player can portal back to the outpost or base without expecting the portal to recover a lost cart, boat, animal, or metal shipment.

Portal Stone: the late-game cargo exception
The Ashlands-era Portal – Stone is a fixed-site alternative that permits blocked cargo, including ores and ingots. It is crafted at a Stonecutter from 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 30 Grausten, and 2 Molten Cores. Its availability is late-game, so it does not replace the standard portal-and-ship workflow during earlier biomes.

Multiplayer troubleshooting checklist
The portal says it is unconnected
- Confirm that both structures are actually portals and are powered by the required construction materials.
- Compare the tags character by character, including capitalization and trailing spaces.
- Check that the destination portal still exists and has not been renamed.
- If several portals share the tag, give each route a unique name and retest the intended pair.
The portal refuses to activate
- Search every inventory slot for one restricted item. Ores, scraps, ingots, eggs, and special progression objects can all block a normal trip.
- Verify the world modifier.
Portal Items,No boss portals, andNo portalsproduce different outcomes fromNormal. - If the item is allowed and the tag is correct, have the player step away, interact again, and test the destination with an empty inventory.
The destination or terrain behaves incorrectly
Iron Gate’s September 17, 2026 Patch 1.0.14 notes identify a multiplayer bug in which terrain modifications by players or monsters could cause performance and portaling issues, terrain seams, and terrain changes to be undone. If a portal area shows those symptoms, save safely, restart the session, and check the official patch notes for a fix or follow-up before rebuilding the entire network.
The October 15, 2026 Patch 1.0.20 notes reviewed for current portal rules discuss trophy drops, exploit fixes, save behavior, and platform issues, but do not announce a change to the normal portal cargo restrictions. Future updates can still alter behavior, so recheck the latest official notes after a major patch.
Designing a dependable multiplayer portal network
Use a naming convention
Keep tags short, unique, and descriptive. A shared list such as home, swamp, mountain, and plains works only when each label is used by exactly one pair. Avoid reusing a tag for a temporary expedition portal until every teammate knows which old destination will be disconnected or renamed.
Protect both ends
Build entrances inside a roofed, defensible room rather than in an exposed shoreline or monster path. Raids and terrain damage can make an otherwise correct link difficult to reach. Keep a spare set of portal materials at the main base so a destroyed end can be replaced and retagged quickly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Plan around cargo reality
Mark a physical road, dock, or cart staging area beside mining outposts. Portals shorten the dangerous player journey; they do not remove the distance that blocked resources must travel. A clear division between “portal supplies” and “ship cargo” prevents a team from discovering the restriction only after a full mining run.
Quick Recap
Key rules for a quick reference
- Two portals with the same case-sensitive tag form a link.
- Tags are limited to 10 characters.
- Three or more portals on one tag do not create a shared hub; use unique pair names.
- One blocked inventory item stops a normal teleport.
- Normal portals move players, not carts, boats, or tamed animals.
- Use ships or other physical transport for restricted metals unless
Portal Itemsis enabled or a Portal – Stone is available. - World modifiers and future patches can change the practical answer.
