To make an explored map cover more territory in Minecraft Bedrock, use a cartography table: put the map in the first slot, add paper in the second, then collect the zoomed-out map. Repeat with the result and another piece of paper to expand its coverage again.
Zoom out an explored map at a cartography table
- Get a cartography table. It can generate in cartographer houses in villages, or you can craft one with two paper and four planks, according to Minecraft’s cartography-table guide.
- Open the table and place the explored map in the first slot.
- Add paper to the second slot, then take the resulting map. It will show a wider area.
- Repeat as needed. Put the zoomed-out map back in the first slot, add another piece of paper, and collect the next result.
This is an in-game crafting operation using game items; increasing the map’s coverage does not require a physical item.
How large can a Bedrock map get?
Minecraft’s official cartography-table article explains how to zoom out but does not state a maximum map level. Secondary mapping references describe four increases, with level 4 covering 2048×2048 blocks. A Minecraft Wiki tutorial gives that level-4 figure, and a 2022 Minecraft Feedback community post lists the progression below; these are secondary references rather than an official technical specification.
| Map level | Coverage in blocks |
|---|---|
| 0 | 128×128 |
| 1 | 256×256 |
| 2 | 512×512 |
| 3 | 1024×1024 |
| 4 | 2048×2048 |
The level and coverage figures are reported in the Minecraft Wiki mapping tutorial and a 2022 Minecraft Feedback community post. Treat them as secondary-source details; the official procedure does not enumerate levels.

Choose a scale based on what you need to see
A zoomed-out map covers more territory, but offers less terrain detail: at a higher zoom level, each map pixel represents a larger area. Use a broader scale when you need an overview, and keep a closer-scale map when you need to inspect a smaller area.
Make a locator map if you need to see your position
In Bedrock, maps do not automatically show the player’s location in the same way as Java maps. To add a player-location marker, put a compass into the cartography table with the map. Minecraft’s official guide says this can be done before or after the map has been explored.
