Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The fastest way to improve Xbox app downloads on Windows 11 is to identify the bottleneck rather than change one supposed “speed boost” setting. Test the connection, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, stop competing traffic, check Windows’ metered-connection setting, update the Xbox and Microsoft Store components, and then inspect the destination drive. If the download repeatedly falls to zero, the Xbox app may be unpacking or verifying files rather than losing its internet connection.
Use the steps below in order. They separate an ISP or Wi-Fi problem from an Xbox app, Gaming Services, Microsoft Store, storage, or Windows problem.
First, find out what “slow” means
Before changing settings, establish a baseline:
- Run a normal internet speed test in a browser.
- Note the Xbox app’s displayed download rate and its unit.
- Check whether another device on the same network is also downloading slowly.
- If possible, test the PC over Ethernet, even temporarily.
Do not confuse megabits per second (Mbps) with megabytes per second (MB/s). Eight megabits per second is approximately one megabyte per second. For example, a connection reporting 80 Mbps may produce a download rate around 10 MB/s before normal overhead and other limitations.
A fast speed test does not prove that the Xbox app is defective. Game delivery can also be limited by Microsoft Store components, Gaming Services, disk activity, installation processing, congestion, or Microsoft-side conditions. Conversely, if every device and service is slow, repeatedly repairing the Xbox app is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

1. Test a wired Ethernet connection
Wi-Fi is convenient, but it introduces distance, walls, interference, and shared-airtime variables. Microsoft identifies wired Ethernet as a fast and reliable connection option and recommends checking the cable, router ports, and modem/router state when troubleshooting network problems.
- Connect the PC directly to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable. Do not use the router’s Internet/WAN port.
- Make sure both cable ends click firmly into place.
- Pause the Xbox download, reconnect the PC if necessary, and resume it.
- Compare the Xbox app rate and a speed test with the earlier Wi-Fi results.
A wired test is useful even if you plan to continue using Wi-Fi. If the rate becomes stable and substantially faster, the likely issue is Wi-Fi coverage, interference, router placement, or congestion—not an Xbox download setting.
If your computer lacks an Ethernet port, a USB to Ethernet adapter can provide a wired test. Match the adapter to an available USB-A or USB-C port and check that its advertised network speed is appropriate for your internet connection. A faster adapter cannot exceed the limits of your router, PC, or internet plan.
For a desktop or laptop that already has a suitable Ethernet port, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical way to remove Wi-Fi variability. It does not automatically increase your subscribed internet speed; its purpose here is to create a more consistent connection for diagnosis and downloading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Improve Wi-Fi if Ethernet is not practical
Microsoft notes that Wi-Fi performance can be affected by the PC’s distance from the router, physical obstructions, and other wireless devices. Try these changes:
- Move the PC closer to the router or access point.
- Reduce walls, cabinets, and other obstructions between the PC and access point.
- Use the router’s less-congested Wi-Fi band when appropriate. A 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection can be faster at short range, while 2.4 GHz often reaches farther.
- Pause large downloads, video uploads, cloud synchronization, and streaming on other devices.
- Restart the router if its wireless performance has degraded.
A new router or mesh system may be justified when the PC has poor coverage or the existing router is overloaded, but buying networking hardware is not a guaranteed Xbox speed upgrade. First prove that coverage or router capacity is the bottleneck.
3. Stop competing traffic and check Task Manager
Pause other game launchers, cloud-storage synchronization, VPN transfers, large browser downloads, and video uploads while testing the Xbox app. These activities can consume the connection, storage, or system resources that the installation needs.
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. In the Processes tab, look for applications using substantial Network, Disk, CPU, or Memory resources. The Performance tab can show whether the network adapter or destination drive is active.
Close only applications you recognize and do not need. Do not indiscriminately terminate Windows, security, networking, Xbox, or Microsoft Store services. Doing so can interrupt the download or create a second problem.
4. Turn off Metered connection only when appropriate
Windows 11’s metered-connection setting is designed to control data usage. Microsoft warns that Microsoft Store downloads may be paused or limited when the connected network is metered.

If you have an unlimited connection and the network was marked metered by mistake, check:
Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet > the connected network > Metered connection
Turn the setting off, then restart or resume the Xbox download. If you use capped cellular data or an ISP plan with a data allowance, leaving metering enabled may be the correct choice. It can help prevent an unexpectedly large game download from consuming your allowance.
5. Update Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services
Xbox PC installations depend on more than the visible Xbox app. Pending Windows updates, outdated Microsoft Store components, or damaged Gaming Services can cause downloads to pause, fail, or behave inconsistently.
Update Windows
Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Restart when Windows requests it, even if the Xbox app appears to be working.
Update Microsoft Store apps
Open Microsoft Store > Library, then select Get updates or the Store’s update control. This updates Store-managed applications and components, including the Xbox app when an update is available.

Repair Gaming Services only when it is actually failing
Gaming Services is important to Xbox PC installation and launch. If it is missing, will not install, or produces a related error, use Microsoft’s documented Gaming Services remediation for that error condition. Do not treat a Gaming Services reinstall as a universal Windows 11 download-speed fix. If the download is merely slow but Gaming Services is functioning normally, repairing it may add disruption without improving throughput.

6. Repair or reset the Xbox app
Use Windows 11’s built-in recovery controls when the Xbox interface is stalled, downloads repeatedly pause, or installation information appears corrupted:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen Xbox and test the download.
Repair attempts to fix the app without reinstalling it. If it does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset is the stronger recovery option and may remove the app’s local data or settings, so you may need to sign in again or restore preferences.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Repair and Reset are most useful for app behavior, repeated pauses, and corrupted local state. They cannot make an overloaded Wi-Fi network or slow ISP connection faster.
7. Check the destination drive
Open File Explorer > This PC and confirm that the drive selected for the game has plenty of free space. Large games need room not only for the final installation but also for temporary files, unpacking, updates, and verification.
Windows may also be able to reclaim space under Settings > System > Storage, using Cleanup recommendations or Storage Sense. Remove only files you are comfortable deleting.
Watch Task Manager while the Xbox app is downloading. A download that starts quickly and then drops to zero may be alternating between network transfer and local unpacking, verification, or disk writes. This is an inference based on the different workloads involved, not proof that every pause is disk-related.
- Network active, disk mostly idle: investigate Wi-Fi, Ethernet, router, ISP, or competing traffic.
- Network near zero, disk active: the app may be writing, unpacking, or verifying files.
- Disk near 100% active time and the system is sluggish: the destination drive may be the local bottleneck.
- Both network and disk repeatedly stop: repair the app and Store components, then investigate the drive and connection.
An internal or compatible external SSD can help when the destination drive is nearly full or demonstrably slow, but it is not a universal internet-speed upgrade. Before buying one, verify Xbox app support, the drive’s format and permissions, available capacity, and whether the PC can use the drive at its rated speed. A SSD for PC game storage is most relevant after Task Manager shows that local storage—not the internet connection—is limiting progress.
8. Restart the modem, router, and PC
A complete restart can clear temporary router, adapter, and connection-state problems. Microsoft’s recommended sequence is:
- Power down the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Power on the modem and wait for it to stabilize.
- Power on the router and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet service to return.
- Restart the PC and reconnect to the network.
Resume the Xbox download and compare the rate with your baseline.

Reset Windows networking only if ordinary restarts fail
If Windows networking itself appears corrupted, open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and run these commands one at a time:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart Windows afterward. These commands reset common networking components, renew the local address, and clear the DNS resolver cache. They do not increase the maximum speed of an internet plan.
Network reset in Windows should be a last resort. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and may require VPN clients, virtual switches, or other network software to be configured again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Do not expect DNS or Delivery Optimization to perform miracles
DNS
Changing DNS servers can improve name-resolution reliability in some environments, but DNS normally does not increase sustained game-download throughput. Windows 11 supports automatic DHCP DNS and manual DNS settings under its Network & internet settings. Leave DNS alone unless you are troubleshooting resolution failures or a specific network problem.
Delivery Optimization
Windows Delivery Optimization handles Windows Updates, Microsoft Store apps, and other Microsoft content. Depending on configuration, it can use Microsoft sources, local PCs, or internet-connected peer sources. Windows also provides activity monitoring and bandwidth controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization > Activity monitor to see whether other Microsoft content is using bandwidth.
There is an important limitation: Microsoft states that Delivery Optimization bandwidth limits apply to automatic update downloads, not to a download that a user manually initiates, such as downloading an app from Microsoft Store. Changing a Delivery Optimization percentage is therefore not a dependable way to accelerate a manually started Xbox game download. It can still help control background Windows or Store traffic that competes with the Xbox app.
Disabling Delivery Optimization is not a guaranteed speed fix either. Microsoft says that disabling it does not disable updates; it makes the device download directly from Microsoft instead of using another PC as a source.

10. Investigate network drivers—but use official sources first
A missing, outdated, or malfunctioning network-adapter driver can cause unstable connectivity. First install Windows updates, then check Device Manager > Network adapters and the support page for your PC or adapter manufacturer. Prefer drivers supplied by the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer when available.

As an optional third-party route, Outbyte Driver Updater may be relevant only when ordinary Windows and manufacturer-driver checks leave you with a suspected driver problem. It is not an official Microsoft or Xbox fix, and driver or performance improvements vary by system condition. Do not install a driver tool merely because the Xbox app is downloading slowly, and create a restore point or other recovery plan before making broad driver changes.
Use the result to choose the next step
After completing the practical checks, compare three downloads:
- The Xbox app download.
- Another Microsoft Store download.
- A large download from a different service.
| What is slow? | Most useful focus |
|---|---|
| Everything on every device | Ethernet/Wi-Fi, router, ISP service, congestion, or the PC’s network adapter. |
| Only this PC | Ethernet test, Wi-Fi signal, Task Manager, network drivers, metering, and Windows networking. |
| Microsoft Store and Xbox, but other services are fast | Microsoft Store updates, Xbox Repair/Reset, Gaming Services, Delivery Optimization activity, and current Microsoft service conditions. |
| Only Xbox, with high disk activity | Destination-drive free space, write speed, unpacking, verification, and installation processing. |
| Only Xbox, with a specific error code | Search Microsoft or Xbox Support for that exact code instead of applying unrelated speed tweaks. |
What not to do
- Do not promise that changing DNS will increase download throughput.
- Do not expect a premium Ethernet cable to exceed the speed of the ISP plan, router, adapter, or PC network interface.
- Do not assume Delivery Optimization settings control every manually initiated Xbox download.
- Do not use registry edits, random PowerShell scripts, or “speed booster” software as first-line fixes.
- Do not confuse intermittent network transfer with a failed download when the disk is actively unpacking or verifying files.
- Do not assume a service outage without checking current Xbox or Microsoft service information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Xbox app download speed keep dropping to zero?
The app may be switching between network transfer and local unpacking, verification, or disk writes. Check Task Manager’s Network and Disk columns. If Disk activity is high while Network activity falls, inspect free space and destination-drive performance before changing network settings.
Will changing DNS make Xbox downloads faster?
Usually not. DNS affects name resolution, while sustained download throughput is mainly influenced by the connection, network congestion, delivery service, and local disk activity. Change DNS for a specific resolution problem, not as a general speed boost.
Should I disable Delivery Optimization?
Not as a default Xbox speed fix. Microsoft says its bandwidth limits apply to automatic updates, not manually initiated downloads. Delivery Optimization can still show or control background Microsoft traffic competing for bandwidth, and disabling it does not disable Windows updates.
Should I buy a faster Ethernet cable or SSD?
A Cat 6 cable is useful for testing a stable wired connection, but it cannot exceed the limits of your internet plan or network hardware. An SSD is relevant when the destination drive is nearly full or shows heavy activity during pauses. Neither purchase guarantees faster Xbox downloads.
The Bottom Line
For most users, start with Ethernet or a better-positioned Wi-Fi connection, stop competing traffic, disable accidental metering, and update the Xbox/Microsoft Store components. Then use Task Manager to distinguish internet speed from local installation work. If only Xbox is affected, repair or reset the app and investigate Gaming Services; if every download is slow, focus on the network, router, adapter, or ISP instead.
