What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To increase FPS in Rainbow Six Siege, first match your target (1080p/60, 1440p/60, 4K/60, or 4K/120) to Ubisoft’s hardware tiers, then identify whether the GPU or CPU is limiting performance. Reduce the settings that load the limited component, use dynamic render scaling or temporal upscaling when image-quality trade-offs are acceptable, keep Windows and graphics drivers current, and only then consider a hardware upgrade. The steps below are manual and reversible; no setting guarantees a fixed percentage gain on every map or PC.
Choose a realistic FPS target first
A useful target is the refresh rate you actually use, not the largest number a menu can display. A stable 60 FPS is a sensible baseline for a 60 Hz monitor. A 120 or 144 Hz display can benefit from a higher cap, but only if your system can sustain it in the heaviest scenes. Siege’s frame rate can vary with map, destruction, player count, background tasks and game updates, so Ubisoft’s specifications are target tiers rather than guarantees.

| Target and quality tier | Ubisoft-listed graphics class | Other listed requirements | What the tier means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 FPS minimum | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT or Intel Arc A380 class | Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 12, SSD | Entry point for the published minimum target; not a promise that every scene stays at 60. |
| 1080p, 60 FPS High | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 6600 or Intel Arc A750 class | 16 GB RAM is listed | Higher visual preset at 1080p, subject to CPU, drivers and background load. |
| 1440p, 60 FPS High | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or Intel Arc B580 class | 16 GB RAM; SSD and 64-bit Windows remain required | Published graphics class for 2560×1440 at 60 FPS on High. |
| 2160p (4K), 60 FPS High | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT class | SSD and 64-bit Windows | Higher render workload than 1440p; monitor output and cable must also support 4K. |
| 2160p (4K), 120 FPS Ultra | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT class | 110 GB available SSD space is listed for this tier | A demanding target intended for high-refresh 4K play, not a universal result. |
The current Ubisoft requirements list 65 GB of available SSD space for most listed PC tiers and 110 GB for the 4K/120 Ultra tier. An SSD is a requirement for the PC installation, but Ubisoft does not publish an in-match FPS increase from replacing one SSD with a faster or larger model.
Find out whether the GPU or CPU is limiting FPS
Changing random options is slower than identifying the bottleneck. Reproduce the drop in the same map or training scenario, watch the game’s performance indicators or a trusted monitoring overlay, and note GPU usage, CPU usage, temperatures and memory use. Look for a sustained pattern rather than a momentary spike.

Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization remains close to full load while one or more CPU cores still have headroom.
- Lowering render resolution or the resolution scale produces a clear FPS increase.
- Frame time rises in visually complex areas, smoke, explosions or scenes with many shadows and reflections.
Signs of a CPU or platform limit
- One or several CPU cores are saturated while total GPU utilization is well below its maximum.
- Lowering resolution barely changes FPS, especially at 1080p.
- Frame rate falls when many objects, players or destruction events are present, even with low image-quality settings.
Mixed limits are common. A capped frame rate, thermal throttling, power-saving mode, shader compilation or a background process can imitate either bottleneck. Make one change at a time, restart the game when requested, and compare the same scene so that you know which change helped.
Apply the in-game settings that matter most
Open Siege’s video or graphics settings and record your original values before changing them. The exact labels and available API or upscaling choices can change between game builds; use only options shown by your current installation.
When the GPU is the bottleneck
- Set a sensible output resolution. Start at your monitor’s native resolution. If you cannot reach the target, test a lower render resolution or the game’s resolution-scale control before reducing every quality option.
- Set a frame-rate limit. Choose a cap your PC can hold consistently, rather than an unstable maximum. A stable cap can reduce oscillation and uneven frame times.
- Enable dynamic render scaling if available. Ubisoft describes Render Target Aliasing as dynamically adjusting the render-scaling ratio according to GPU workload. Select your desired target FPS; the game can lower internal resolution during heavy scenes and raise it when headroom returns. The trade-off is a softer image during scaling events.
- Test temporal upscaling. Temporal upscaling renders below display resolution and reconstructs the image. It can raise performance for GPU-bound systems while introducing reconstruction artifacts, shimmer or reduced fine detail. Compare distant wires, railings and text at your normal viewing distance.
- Reduce anti-aliasing or upscaling quality. These options can be expensive at high resolutions. Lower one quality step, test, and stop when the image becomes distracting.
- Lower shadows and reflections. These settings increase lighting and scene-rendering work. Reduce them after resolution and upscaling so you can see whether the primary load was pixel count.
- Reduce ambient-occlusion-type effects and volumetric effects. Contact shading, fog and similar effects add GPU work in scenes with smoke or complex geometry. Disable or lower them only if earlier changes are insufficient.
Do not assume that every low setting is beneficial. Some options are CPU-side or have a small effect on your particular hardware. Ubisoft publishes the mechanisms above, not a universal FPS percentage for each setting, so measure your own result.

When the CPU is the bottleneck
- Keep resolution changes modest. Lowering resolution mainly reduces GPU work; it may produce little improvement when the processor is limiting frame delivery.
- Close competing workloads. Exit browsers with many tabs, video encoders, launchers performing downloads, game overlays you do not need, and monitoring or recording jobs that consume CPU time.
- Use a stable power mode. In Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select a performance-oriented mode when plugged in. Laptop vendors may expose an additional performance profile; use it only with adequate cooling.
- Check temperatures and clocks. If CPU frequency falls during the drop, clean blocked vents, verify fan operation and remove an overly restrictive laptop power profile. Do not disable thermal protections.
- Reduce background startup load. In Settings > Apps > Startup, turn off programs you do not need launching with Windows. This does not make a weak CPU equivalent to a faster one, but it removes avoidable contention.
- Consider a platform upgrade only after testing. A faster processor, more capable motherboard or additional memory can help a CPU-limited system, but compatibility, firmware, cooling and power requirements must be checked together.
Use dynamic scaling and upscaling without losing control of image quality
Dynamic render scaling is different from simply selecting a permanently lower resolution. Siege adjusts the internal render-resolution ratio toward a selected frame-rate target. This is useful when your average FPS is acceptable but heavy scenes cause dips. Set a target below the highest number your PC reaches; an unrealistic target can force the image to remain soft while still missing the goal.
Temporal upscaling also changes the internal resolution, then reconstructs detail for the display resolution. It is most useful when the GPU is full. Inspect the result in motion, not only on a static menu: thin geometry, foliage, distant signage and particle effects reveal reconstruction artifacts. If clarity is more important than a few additional frames, return to native rendering and lower a less visible quality setting instead.
Ubisoft’s earlier Vulkan documentation described AMD FSR 1.0 as a Vulkan-only option when it was introduced. API support and menu labels have changed across Siege updates, so do not assume that a specific upscaler or API is available in every current build. Select the API and options your launcher and graphics menu actually expose.

Keep Windows, the game API and graphics drivers current
Ubisoft’s current PC baseline lists 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and DirectX 12. Install pending Windows updates, reboot, and then check your GPU manufacturer’s official driver channel for a current driver that supports your card and operating-system version. Ubisoft’s Vulkan documentation explicitly advises: “UPDATE YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVERS.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Driver updates can include game-specific fixes and API optimizations, but a new driver is not automatically faster in every scene. If a problem begins immediately after an update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback procedure or reinstall a known-good version. Older graphics hardware may not support newer APIs or features; forcing an unsupported mode can cause crashes, missing effects or worse performance.
Verify the game installation
- Close Siege and its launcher.
- Open the launcher’s library, select the game and choose its file-verification or repair command. The wording differs by launcher.
- Allow the process to finish, then reboot Windows before testing again.
Verification replaces damaged or missing files; it does not upgrade hardware or guarantee higher FPS. If the game repeatedly recompiles shaders after an update, allow that process to complete before judging performance.

Remove common causes of sudden FPS drops
Overlays and recording
Temporarily disable overlays from the game launcher, chat clients, GPU software and recording tools. Test with one change at a time. If the drop disappears, re-enable overlays individually to find the conflict. Hardware-accelerated browser windows, live streams and background recording can also consume CPU, GPU or memory.
Thermal and power problems
A desktop or laptop that starts fast and slows after several minutes may be throttling. Monitor temperatures and clock speeds while reproducing the issue. Improve airflow, clean dust safely, use the manufacturer’s intended cooling profile and keep the system on AC power when gaming on a laptop. Do not remove thermal limits or apply an unstable overclock merely to chase a higher counter.
Memory pressure and storage space
Ubisoft lists 8 GB RAM for the 1080p/60 minimum tier and 16 GB for the 1080p/60 High tier. If Windows is paging heavily, close applications or upgrade to a compatible memory configuration. Keep sufficient free space for updates and shader caches. Siege requires an SSD for the listed PC installation; an SSD can improve loading logistics, but no cited Ubisoft figure converts an SSD change into higher in-match FPS.

Network symptoms are not FPS symptoms
Rubber-banding, delayed hit registration and packet loss can feel like stutter even when the render frame rate is stable. Check the game’s network indicators and your connection separately. Lowering graphics settings cannot repair an internet or server problem.
When a hardware upgrade is the right fix
If your GPU is below the published class for the target you selected and it remains fully utilized after sensible settings changes, a graphics-card upgrade is the most direct physical solution. Ubisoft’s 1440p/60 High tier names RTX 3070, RX 6700 XT or Arc B580 class hardware; its 4K/120 Ultra tier names RTX 4070 Ti Super or RX 7900 XT class hardware. Treat those as reference tiers, not guarantees for your exact processor, cooling, driver version or future game update.
Before buying, check the complete system:
- Power-supply wattage, connectors and the card’s recommended power specification.
- Case length, thickness, airflow and room for front-mounted radiators or drive cages.
- CPU performance at your chosen resolution, so a new GPU is not held back by a processor limit.
- Monitor resolution, refresh rate and input connection; a 4K/120 target requires a display and cable path that can carry it.
- Current street price and availability in your country on the purchase date.
If monitoring shows a CPU limit, prioritize a compatible processor or platform upgrade instead. If RAM is constantly full, adding capacity may prevent stutter, but it does not turn an entry-level GPU into a high-tier card.
