WordPress can be the public home for your show, but podcast apps do not read your pages directly. They subscribe to an RSS feed that contains your show metadata and each episode’s audio enclosure. A reliable setup therefore has three parts: a WordPress site, correctly published episode posts, and a feed submitted to directories such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
WordPress.com offers a guided Jetpack Podcast workflow, while self-hosted WordPress gives you more control through a podcast plugin such as Simple Podcasting. The steps below show how to choose between them, publish a technically valid first episode, submit the feed, and avoid the changes that can break an established listing.

Choose WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress first
Your choice determines where audio files live, how the feed is created, and which maintenance tasks you own.
| Consideration | WordPress.com with Jetpack Podcast | Self-hosted WordPress with a podcast plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Audio hosting | On the Free plan, the feed can point to audio hosted elsewhere. Premium and higher plans add WordPress.com audio hosting; the Premium example documented by WordPress.com includes 13 GB of audio storage. | You choose a media or podcast host and connect it through the plugin. Your web host’s storage and bandwidth limits apply if you upload audio there. |
| Setup and updates | Guided settings and a managed dashboard reduce server maintenance. | You configure the plugin, WordPress, backups, security, PHP, and hosting yourself. |
| Feed distribution | Jetpack Podcast generates the feed and presents its RSS address in Jetpack → Podcast → Distribution. | The plugin generates the feed. You copy its RSS address to each directory and maintain the feed settings. |
| Analytics | Eligible WordPress.com plans provide listener statistics and an episode dashboard. Spotify listening is counted inside Spotify and does not appear in WordPress.com podcast statistics. | Analytics depend on your plugin and audio host. Directory dashboards provide their own platform-specific figures. |
| Control | Fewer infrastructure decisions and a consistent WordPress.com workflow. | More control over plugins, theme, hosting, redirects, and custom feed behavior, with more responsibility for compatibility. |
For a first show, managed WordPress.com is the shorter path from recording to a valid feed. Self-hosting is sensible when you already operate WordPress, need custom integrations, or want to choose a separate podcast host. In either case, the directory listing is only as dependable as the RSS feed behind it.

Prepare the information and files your feed needs
Collect the following before opening the podcast settings. Consistent values prevent a directory from treating your show as a new or incomplete submission.
- Show title and a concise summary that explains the audience and subject.
- Host, presenter, or talent name.
- An owner email address that you can access for directory verification and account notices.
- Copyright wording and the Apple Podcasts category that best describes the show.
- An explicit-content designation. Mark the show accurately rather than relying on episode-by-episode guesses.
- Square cover art in JPG or PNG format, between 1400×1400 and 3000×3000 pixels. Use standard RGB color rather than CMYK; CMYK artwork can be rejected.
- A finished first episode, or a short trailer. Apple Podcasts for Creators suggests a trailer of one to two minutes when a trailer is appropriate.
For broad compatibility, export the episode as MP3. WordPress.com’s documentation states: “For best compatibility across all platforms, use the .mp3 format for your audio files.” M4A is not accepted by Spotify, while OGG and WAV are not accepted by Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Keep an uncompressed master for editing, but upload a compatible delivery file.
Set up a podcast on WordPress.com
WordPress.com’s Jetpack Podcast workflow turns posts in one category into feed items. The category is not merely a navigation label: changing it after submission changes the feed URL and requires you to submit the new feed again.
1. Open the podcast settings
- Sign in to your WordPress.com site dashboard.
- Open Jetpack → Podcast and start the guided setup.
- Enter the show title, summary, host or talent, owner email, copyright, Apple category, and explicit-content setting.
- Upload the square RGB cover image and save the settings.
Review spelling and capitalization now. Directories display these fields publicly, and changing core identity information later can trigger review or audience confusion.
2. Create a dedicated podcast category
- In the podcast setup, choose or create a category used only for this show.
- Keep ordinary blog posts out of that category; every published post assigned to it is treated as a podcast episode.
- Do not rename or replace the category after submitting the feed unless you are prepared to resubmit the resulting RSS address to every directory.
A dedicated category also makes it easier to audit your feed: the category archive should contain only the episodes you intend listeners to receive.
3. Publish the first episode with media
- Create a new post and add a Podcast Episode, Audio, or Video block, depending on the format you are publishing.
- Upload or select the MP3. If your plan does not include WordPress.com audio hosting, use the block’s external-media option and confirm that the audio URL is publicly reachable.
- Add the episode title, a useful description, show notes, links, and any content warning. Keep the description readable without requiring the audio player.
- Assign the post to the dedicated podcast category.
- Set the post to Published, then open the public page in a private browser window and play the file.
The post must be published, contain media, and use the selected podcast category. A draft, password-protected post, post without an audio or video enclosure, or post in another category will not appear in the podcast feed.

4. Find and inspect the RSS address
- Return to Jetpack → Podcast → Distribution.
- Copy the displayed RSS URL exactly; do not add tracking parameters or change its path.
- Open the address in a browser or feed validator and confirm that it is public, returns RSS 2.0 XML, and includes the first episode’s enclosure URL, title, description, publication date, and GUID.
WordPress.com requires a podcast category and a published episode with media before the feed is ready for submission. If the Distribution screen does not show a usable feed, check those three conditions before changing themes or plugins.
Build the equivalent workflow on self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress does not automatically become a podcast system just because it can publish audio. Install and configure a podcast plugin such as Simple Podcasting, then treat the plugin’s feed as the canonical address for directory submissions.
Install and configure the plugin
- Back up the site and confirm that your WordPress core, PHP version, theme, and plugin meet the podcast plugin’s current requirements.
- Install the plugin from the WordPress admin plugin screen or the vendor’s documented package, then activate it.
- Open the plugin’s podcast settings and enter the same show metadata listed above: title, summary, author, owner email, copyright, category, explicit status, and artwork.
- Choose whether audio files are stored on your web host or an external audio host. Check storage, monthly transfer, file-size, and direct-link limits before uploading a library.
- Identify the plugin-generated RSS URL. Save it in your production notes and do not switch to a different feed URL after submission without a documented migration plan.
Create an episode post
- Use the plugin’s episode fields or block to attach the public MP3 URL.
- Enter the episode title, description, publication date, and show notes; assign the show’s podcast category or series taxonomy if the plugin uses one.
- Publish the post and test the page and direct audio URL while logged out.
- Open the RSS feed and verify that the enclosure points to the same file you tested and that the item has a stable globally unique identifier.
Plugin labels differ, so follow the active plugin’s current screen names for fields such as episode number, season, and transcript. The non-negotiable result is a valid RSS item with a reachable enclosure and an identifier that will not change when you edit the post.
Make the feed acceptable to podcast directories
Directories ingest the feed on their own schedules. Your website can be correct while an app still shows old artwork or an old description for several hours or days.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple Podcasts
Apple requires a public RSS 2.0 feed, square artwork, at least one episode, unique enclosure URLs, and a stable globally unique GUID for each episode. Apple Podcasts for Creators states: “To submit a podcast you must have an Apple Podcasts Connect account.” Create or sign in to that account, choose the option to add a show by RSS feed, paste the exact WordPress feed address, and complete the validation and submission screens.
Before submitting, check that the first item is actually published and that its audio URL does not require a login, cookie, or temporary token. Do not reuse one enclosure URL for different episodes. If you replace an audio file, keep the episode’s GUID and enclosure URL stable where your host supports replacement at the same address.

Spotify for Creators
Open Spotify for Creators, choose the option to add an existing show, and paste the WordPress RSS URL. Verify ownership through the email address delivered to the feed owner, then review the imported title, artwork, category, and episode list.
Spotify does not accept M4A uploads for this workflow. Use MP3 rather than assuming that a file accepted by your editing software will be accepted by every directory. Spotify listening is measured in Spotify’s own analytics and is not included in WordPress.com podcast statistics.
Other directories
Use the same canonical RSS URL for additional podcast apps. Copy it directly from the WordPress dashboard or plugin settings instead of reconstructing it from a browser address. Record each submission date and the account used so that future feed changes can be traced.
Test every episode before and after publication
A short release checklist catches most feed failures.
- Public access: Open the episode page and direct MP3 URL while logged out or in a private browser.
- Media: Confirm the enclosure returns the complete file, not an HTML login page or a redirect that expires.
- Format: Use MP3 for the broadest documented compatibility; avoid M4A for Spotify and OGG or WAV for Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
- Metadata: Check title, description, publication date, artwork, category, explicit flag, and owner email.
- Identity: Ensure every episode has a unique enclosure URL and a stable GUID.
- Feed validity: Open the RSS XML and use a current feed validator to identify malformed XML, missing required fields, or invalid media types.
- Playback: Test from a second network or device so a local cache or logged-in session does not hide access problems.
After publication, wait for directory caches to refresh. WordPress.com notes that apps can take hours to days to reflect feed changes; repeatedly resubmitting during that window can create confusion without speeding up ingestion.
Understand hosting, storage, and analytics trade-offs
WordPress.com audio hosting
Premium and higher WordPress.com plans add audio hosting, listener statistics, and an episode dashboard. The documented Premium example includes 13 GB of audio storage. Treat that figure as plan-specific rather than a universal allowance: confirm the current plan, region, billing terms, and any bandwidth policy before moving a large archive.

The Free plan can still publish a podcast feed when audio is hosted elsewhere. In that arrangement, WordPress.com supplies the website and feed workflow while the external host supplies the media file. Test the external host’s direct links and retention policy before you announce an episode.
External hosting with either WordPress option
An external podcast host can separate high-volume audio delivery from ordinary web hosting. Compare storage, transfer limits, analytics detail, redirects, file replacement rules, and export options. A plugin may make the feed, but the host still controls whether an enclosure remains reachable. Keep your own archive and document the exact URL for every published file.
Analytics boundaries
Website page views, WordPress.com podcast statistics, external-host download counts, Apple Podcasts analytics, and Spotify analytics are different datasets. They will not necessarily match. In particular, Spotify listens occur inside Spotify and do not appear in WordPress.com podcast stats. Define which dashboard answers each business question before judging an episode’s performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect stable URLs and identifiers
Podcast apps cache feed items and identify episodes by GUID. Changing the podcast category on WordPress.com changes the feed URL, so directories must be given the new address. Changing an episode’s enclosure URL or GUID can make an app treat an edited episode as a brand-new item, producing duplicates or lost update history.
- Keep the same feed URL after launch whenever possible.
- Keep each episode’s GUID unchanged when editing its title, notes, or audio at the same public address.
- Use a permanent redirect only as part of a planned feed migration, and leave the old feed available long enough for directory clients to follow it.
- Do not delete an old episode merely to correct a typo; edit the existing item unless there is a legal or safety reason to remove it.
Troubleshoot common failures
The feed is empty
Confirm that at least one post is published, has an audio or video block or plugin enclosure, and is assigned to the exact podcast category selected in Jetpack. A post in a similarly named category will not count.
A directory rejects the artwork
Export a square JPG or PNG between 1400×1400 and 3000×3000 pixels in RGB color. Re-save artwork that was supplied in CMYK, and remove unusual embedded profiles or transparent edges if the directory’s validator reports them.

FAQ
Can WordPress host podcast audio?
Yes, on WordPress.com plans that include audio hosting. WordPress.com Free can publish the feed while audio is hosted elsewhere. Self-hosted WordPress can store files on your web host or connect to an external podcast host through a plugin.
Do I need a separate website for Apple Podcasts or Spotify?
No. You need a public RSS feed and the relevant directory account. WordPress remains the publishing source; the directories read and cache the feed.
What happens if I change the podcast category?
On WordPress.com, changing the selected podcast category changes the feed URL. You must submit the new URL to directories, so avoid changing it after launch.
Recommended Free Tools
Why are Spotify numbers different from WordPress.com statistics?
Spotify counts listening inside Spotify. Those listens are not included in WordPress.com podcast statistics, so the dashboards measure different activity.
The Bottom Line
Use a dedicated WordPress podcast category, publish a public MP3 episode, verify the RSS feed’s enclosure and GUID, and submit that stable feed URL to each directory. WordPress.com minimizes setup; self-hosted WordPress maximizes control. Whichever route you choose, feed stability and accurate metadata matter more than the theme used for the website.
