phpMyAdmin usually is not the component imposing an import-size ceiling. PHP rejects the upload before phpMyAdmin can process it. Increase PHP’s upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, make post_max_size larger than upload_max_filesize, and raise time and memory limits for large SQL dumps. Then reload the PHP handler or web server and verify the effective values from the same PHP environment used by phpMyAdmin.

What actually limits a phpMyAdmin import?
The practical limit is the smallest applicable PHP limit, not a separate phpMyAdmin setting. PHP checks the request before the application receives the uploaded dump. The PHP manual lists stock defaults of upload_max_filesize = 2M and post_max_size = 8M (defaults can vary by PHP version and distribution), so an unchanged installation commonly rejects dumps only a few megabytes in size.

upload_max_filesize limits one uploaded file. post_max_size limits the entire HTTP POST body, including the file and multipart overhead. Consequently, post_max_size must be greater than upload_max_filesize; setting both to the same number can still fail at the boundary. Both values should exceed the largest dump you intend to import.
Large imports can also run out of time or memory after the upload succeeds. The phpMyAdmin FAQ specifically calls out max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size. max_input_time matters during the upload itself: the PHP manual lists a 60-second default, and a slow connection can exceed that while sending a large file.

Choose safe values before changing PHP
Estimate the largest SQL dump you will import, then leave margin for multipart overhead and future growth. For example, if your largest file is 90 MB, an illustrative starting point is upload_max_filesize = 128M and post_max_size = 140M or higher. These are examples, not universal requirements; parsing a complex dump may need more execution time or memory than a simple one of the same size.
- Keep
post_max_sizestrictly larger thanupload_max_filesize. - Do not raise every limit to an extreme value without a reason. A high limit permits a larger request to consume server resources.
- If you administer multiple sites, prefer a site- or directory-specific change instead of enlarging the limit for the whole server.
- Check storage as well as PHP limits: the server needs room for the uploaded file, temporary upload data and the resulting database operations.
PHP size suffixes such as M and G are normally used in configuration values. Use the syntax accepted by your PHP version and hosting panel, and check the effective value after saving rather than assuming the edited file is the one phpMyAdmin uses.

Find which PHP configuration phpMyAdmin uses
The command-line PHP installation and the PHP handler serving your web page can load different configuration files. A command such as php -i shows information for the command-line binary, including the loaded configuration path. That path is useful, but it is not proof that the web server or PHP-FPM pool uses the same file.
- Run
php -i | grep -E 'Loaded Configuration File|upload_max_filesize|post_max_size|max_input_time|max_execution_time|memory_limit'on a Unix-like system, or runphp -iand search those names on Windows. - Record the loaded configuration file and the current values.
- Identify whether the site uses Apache’s PHP module, PHP-FPM, CGI or a hosting control panel. Each handler can have a different effective configuration.
- If you cannot access server configuration, ask the host which PHP version and handler serve the phpMyAdmin URL and which per-site settings are allowed.
The PHP manual classifies these directives as PHP_INI_PERDIR settings. They can be set in php.ini, .htaccess or server configuration where that handler permits it. Availability differs by setup: an .htaccess php_value line is associated with Apache’s module handler and will not automatically work with PHP-FPM or every CGI arrangement.
Method 1: edit php.ini
Direct editing is the most dependable approach when you control the server and know which configuration file the web PHP process loads.

- Back up the active PHP configuration file.
- Open the effective
php.iniwith administrative privileges. - Locate each directive. Remove a leading semicolon if it is commented out, then set values appropriate for your dump. For example:
upload_max_filesize = 128M
post_max_size = 140M
max_input_time = 300
max_execution_time = 300
memory_limit = 256M- Save the file and validate its syntax if your platform provides a PHP configuration check.
- Reload or restart the PHP handler and, where required, the web server. A change is not active until the process serving phpMyAdmin has reread its configuration; the exact command depends on your operating system, web server and PHP-FPM setup.
- Open phpMyAdmin’s Import page and test with a non-critical dump or inspect the displayed maximum-size information if your installation shows it. Treat that display as a practical check, not a guarantee that every server-layer limit has been removed.
Do not assume restarting only the command-line PHP process changes a long-running PHP-FPM pool. Conversely, restarting an unrelated service will not reload the handler that serves phpMyAdmin.

Method 2: use a hosting panel or per-site settings
Shared hosts often expose PHP options through a control panel rather than allowing direct edits. Look for a section labelled PHP settings, PHP options, MultiPHP INI Editor, or a similar per-domain configuration screen. The labels vary by provider.
- Select the domain or virtual host that contains phpMyAdmin.
- Set
upload_max_filesizeand a largerpost_max_size. - Increase
max_input_timeif the upload times out while transferring, and increasemax_execution_timeif processing times out after the upload. - Raise
memory_limitconservatively if PHP reports memory exhaustion. - Save the settings, wait for the host’s PHP service to apply them, and verify from phpMyAdmin or a temporary diagnostic page.
Some hosts cap these directives or disable overrides. If the panel refuses a value, the restriction is at the host level; use an alternative import route instead of attempting to bypass it.
Method 3: use .htaccess or server configuration where supported
Because these directives are PHP_INI_PERDIR, a server may permit per-directory overrides. A typical Apache module configuration uses lines like:
php_value upload_max_filesize 128M
php_value post_max_size 140M
php_value max_input_time 300
php_value max_execution_time 300
php_value memory_limit 256MOnly use this form when your server’s PHP handler supports it. On a PHP-FPM or CGI site, those directives may be ignored or may trigger an HTTP 500 error. If that happens, remove the lines and configure the PHP-FPM pool, virtual host, panel or main php.ini using the method supported by your environment.

Verify the effective values, not just the file you edited
Verification catches the most common cause of a seemingly unchanged limit: editing a different PHP installation from the one serving phpMyAdmin.
- Check the values reported by the web PHP environment. A temporary diagnostic script containing
<?php phpinfo(); ?>can show the loaded file and local/master values; protect it from public access and delete it immediately after testing. - Compare
upload_max_filesize,post_max_size,max_input_time,max_execution_timeandmemory_limitwith the values you intended. - Confirm that
post_max_sizeis higher thanupload_max_filesize, not merely equal. - Reload phpMyAdmin, open Import and select a dump below the configured ceiling. A displayed maximum-size note is a useful indication that the web process sees the new upload value, although a proxy, web server or host policy can still impose another limit.
- Remove diagnostic files and avoid leaving
phpinfo()publicly reachable because it reveals server details.
Diagnose an import that still fails
The file selector rejects the dump immediately
Check upload_max_filesize first, then post_max_size. Remember that the POST body contains multipart overhead, so a file exactly at the nominal file limit can still exceed the request limit. Also check for a reverse proxy or web-server request-size limit outside PHP; changing PHP cannot raise a separate upstream cap.
The upload starts but ends with little or no error
When post_max_size is exceeded, PHP can empty $_POST and $_FILES rather than returning a normal upload error code. The practical symptom can be an import form that appears to submit without a useful file error. Raise post_max_size above the file size, reload the PHP handler, and verify the web values again.
The upload completes but the request times out
If the failure occurs while data is still being sent, increase max_input_time. If the file has uploaded and SQL parsing continues until the request times out, increase max_execution_time. A slow connection can need more input time even when the dump is not especially large.

Increase memory_limit cautiously, and consider whether the dump can be split into smaller files. A higher memory ceiling consumes more RAM when several PHP workers run concurrently; set it for the affected site or directory where possible rather than globally.

The new values disappear after a reboot or deployment
Recheck which configuration source has precedence. A hosting panel, container image, PHP-FPM pool or deployment process may regenerate php.ini. Store the intended values in the configuration system that actually manages the service, then restart or reload that service and verify through the web handler.
Security and operational limits
The PHP common-pitfalls guidance warns that very large limits applied to an entire server or virtual host can increase security risk. Large uploads tie up bandwidth, temporary storage, CPU and memory, and an exposed import endpoint can become an attractive resource target.
- Use the smallest limits that cover your real dumps.
- Restrict phpMyAdmin to authenticated administrators and, where practical, a protected network or VPN.
- Apply generous values only to the site or directory that needs them.
- Lower temporary limits again after a one-time migration if routine operation does not require them.
- Monitor disk space and PHP/web-server logs during a large import.
When you cannot raise the upload limit
Use phpMyAdmin’s server-side UploadDir
phpMyAdmin’s import documentation describes an upload directory configured with $cfg['UploadDir']. Transfer the dump to that directory using an administrator-controlled method, then choose the already-present file from the Import page. This avoids sending the dump through the browser upload request, although PHP still has to process the import and the server must have enough storage and permissions.
Follow the directory and permission requirements for your phpMyAdmin version. Do not place an unrestricted upload directory inside a publicly downloadable web path.
Use the MySQL client and SQL source
The phpMyAdmin FAQ suggests moving the dump to the database server with a secure transfer method such as scp or FTP, then running it through the MySQL client with the SQL source command. A typical interactive sequence is:

The client route bypasses the browser’s PHP upload limits, but it requires shell or database access and appropriate permissions. Compressed dumps may need to be decompressed first unless your chosen client workflow supports streaming decompression.
Use compression when appropriate
phpMyAdmin documents drag-and-drop and compressed gzip, zip and bzip2 uploads. Compression can reduce transfer time and disk use when the SQL text compresses well, but the effective upload and processing limits still need to accommodate the uploaded archive and the work required to unpack and import it.
A repeatable procedure
- Measure the largest dump you need to import and choose modest headroom.
- Find the PHP configuration used by the web handler, not only the command-line binary.
- Set
upload_max_filesizeabove the dump size. - Set
post_max_sizehigher thanupload_max_filesize. - Increase
max_input_time,max_execution_timeandmemory_limitonly where the dump or connection requires it. - Save the change in the supported configuration layer.
- Reload or restart the PHP handler and any required web service.
- Verify the effective web values and test with a safe dump.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does changing upload_max_filesize alone not fix the error?
The complete request is also constrained by post_max_size, which must be larger than upload_max_filesize. PHP can discard the uploaded file data when the POST limit is exceeded, so both values must be changed and then verified in the web PHP environment.
Can I put these settings in .htaccess?
Only when the server uses a PHP handler that permits per-directory PHP overrides, such as an Apache module setup. PHP-FPM, CGI and many shared-host configurations require a panel, pool, virtual-host or php.ini change instead.
What is the safest option for a one-time very large database restore?
Avoid raising a global limit permanently. Use a narrowly scoped temporary change, or place the dump on the server and import it through phpMyAdmin’s UploadDir or the MySQL client’s source command, then remove temporary access and diagnostic files.
