The Intricate Key is made in stages rather than dropped as a finished item. Reports disagree about how many keys the area consumes, so verify the current wiki or patch information before committing your Bloodgold.

What the Intricate Key does
The Intricate Key is the finished gate-opening item for the Gates of Mörkhalla in Valheim’s Deep North content. It is not a guaranteed enemy drop. The production chain has three separate material stages:

- A Mould obtained from Deep North enemies or the Winding Tunnels.
- Five Bloodgold Ingots made from Petrified Tissue.
- Five Liquid Frost made by processing Ice in a Frigid Kiln.
The Black Forge creates an intermediate Cast: Intricate Key. Only the subsequent Frost Foundry step turns that cast into the finished Intricate Key reported as usable at the gate.
The figures and mechanics below come from wiki and guide snippets that reference Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North. The current patch was not independently verified, so check the live wiki and patch notes if your game shows different recipes, locations or gate behavior.

Step 1: Find a Mould
The Mould is the uncertain part of the route. It is reported from two enemy-related sources and from breakable debris in the Winding Tunnels, but none of these sources guarantees one on a particular kill or object.
Enemy drops
Eyeless Ones can drop a Mould. Elakings can also drop one when they do not have a lantern. The available snippets do not establish a drop percentage for either enemy, so treat them as opportunities rather than a predictable farming rate.

Winding Tunnels debris
Search the Winding Tunnels and break wooden rubble and debris along the tunnel walls and floors. A Valheim Wiki (Weird Gloop) snippet gives two observed chances for debris-related containers:

Because the percentages are not guaranteed and the source was only captured as a search snippet, plan for a full tunnel-clearing run rather than a single successful break. Search both walls and floors, and continue checking enemy sources if the debris run produces nothing.

Step 2: Prepare the Deep North approach
The Gates of Mörkhalla are positioned high on a Mörkhalla tower. A Grappling Hook is required to reach the raised entrance. Bring it before travelling to the tower; having the key materials but no way to climb leaves the route incomplete.
For a shorter crafting loop, place the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry close together where the game allows. The final process takes about 50 seconds, and nearby stations avoid repeated trips while you move between the cast, Liquid Frost and the foundry.

Step 3: Make five Bloodgold Ingots
Collect Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls and smelt it into Bloodgold. The recipe information specifies five Bloodgold Ingots for one cast, but the available material does not state how many units of Petrified Tissue produce each ingot. Gather enough tissue to display five completed ingots in your inventory rather than relying on an assumed conversion ratio.
- Locate and defeat petrified Gammeltrolls in the Deep North.
- Collect their Petrified Tissue.
- Process the tissue through the appropriate smelting route until you have 5 Bloodgold Ingots.
- Keep the ingots available at a level 4 Black Forge with the Mould.
Do not substitute ordinary metal or an unprocessed Bloodgold material: the listed Black Forge recipe calls specifically for Bloodgold Ingots.

Step 4: Craft the Cast: Intricate Key
At a level 4 Black Forge, combine five Bloodgold Ingots and one Mould. The result is not yet the gate key; it is named Cast: Intricate Key.
- Upgrade the Black Forge to level 4 if it is lower.
- Open the Black Forge crafting menu.
- Provide 5 Bloodgold Ingots and 1 Mould.
- Craft the Cast: Intricate Key.
If the cast recipe does not appear, check the station level first, then confirm that the Mould is the actual item and that all five ingots are finished Bloodgold Ingots. The snippets do not identify any alternative station or lower-level recipe.
Step 5: Produce Liquid Frost
Liquid Frost is made at a Frigid Kiln by converting Ice. The source material confirms the station and the direction of the conversion, but does not state the exact amount of Ice consumed per unit. Process Ice until you have at least five Liquid Frost.
- Place or locate a Frigid Kiln.
- Load Ice as the input.
- Run the conversion until the output reaches 5 Liquid Frost.
- Carry the Liquid Frost to the Frost Foundry along with the Cast: Intricate Key.
If the kiln output is lower than expected, continue processing Ice rather than assuming the first cycle supplies the entire requirement; the documented requirement is five Liquid Frost for the finishing step.

Step 6: Finish the Intricate Key in a Frost Foundry
The Frost Foundry is the final station. Insert the Cast: Intricate Key and five Liquid Frost. Guide snippets report a process time of about 50 seconds.
- Open the Frost Foundry.
- Place 1 Cast: Intricate Key in its input slot.
- Add 5 Liquid Frost.
- Start the process and allow approximately 50 seconds for completion.
- Collect the finished Intricate Key.
The 50-second figure is reported by game-guide sources rather than an official publisher statement, so a later patch may alter it. Keeping the three crafting stations nearby reduces downtime while the foundry runs.
Step 7: Reach and open the Mörkhalla gate
Take the finished key and a Grappling Hook to the raised entrance of the Mörkhalla tower. Use the hook to reach the entrance, then use the Intricate Key at the gate. A mould or an unfinished Cast: Intricate Key should not be treated as a substitute for the finished item: one report specifically says the entrance requires a completed key.

The available sources do not agree, and this is the most important planning uncertainty. One source says progression eventually requires three Intricate Keys and that keys are consumed as you advance. Another lists one finished key per entrance. Reports also differ on what happens after the exterior gate opens:

- Another says certain inner gates consume a key.
- A further account says the entrance itself consumes one finished key.
These statements cannot all describe the same version or progression state. Do not assume that one key is enough for every interior gate, and do not assume that opening the exterior gate permanently preserves the item. Before spending rare Bloodgold, check the current Valheim Wiki entry and patch notes for your installed version. If those references still differ, record which gate you are testing and verify whether the key disappears before crafting additional copies.
Planning checklist before you travel
- Grappling Hook for the raised tower entrance.
- At least one Mould, with the understanding that finding it is not guaranteed.
- Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls sufficient to smelt five Bloodgold Ingots.
- Level 4 Black Forge access.
- Ice sufficient to produce five Liquid Frost at a Frigid Kiln.
- Access to a Frost Foundry.
- Enough inventory space for the Mould, ingots, cast and final key.
- A plan for the unresolved key-consumption rule; confirm whether your route needs one or as many as three finished keys.
Common problems and fixes
No Mould after clearing the Winding Tunnels
The debris chances reported for wardrobe shafts and rubble piles are 13.8% and 12.0%, not guarantees. Check every breakable wooden section on tunnel walls and floors, then use Eyeless Ones and unlanterned Elakings as additional sources. The available evidence does not establish a guaranteed chest, enemy or room.

Confirm that the forge is level 4 and that you have one Mould plus five completed Bloodgold Ingots. Petrified Tissue is an ingredient for making Bloodgold, not the item listed in the cast recipe.
The final key cannot be started
Use a Frost Foundry, not the Black Forge or Frigid Kiln. The finishing inputs are the Cast: Intricate Key and five Liquid Frost. The kiln makes Liquid Frost from Ice; it does not finish the cast itself.
You cannot reach the gate
The entrance is elevated on the tower. Return with a Grappling Hook and use it to reach the raised entry point before trying the key.
The gate rejects your item
Use the finished Intricate Key. The source reports specifically distinguish it from both the Mould and the Cast: Intricate Key. If a finished key is rejected or disappears unexpectedly, treat that as version-dependent behavior and check current documentation before crafting another one.

Recommended order for an efficient run
Because the Mould is the least predictable component, secure it before spending time on the other materials. Then collect Petrified Tissue and Ice while arranging access to the three stations. Smelt the five Bloodgold Ingots, cast the key at the level 4 Black Forge, convert enough Ice to five Liquid Frost, and finish the key in the Frost Foundry. Travel to the tower only after confirming that your Grappling Hook is available and that you understand how your current version handles key consumption.
