How to Increase Tick Speed in Minecraft Java Edition

Use /tick rate to change the overall simulation target in supported Java versions; use randomTickSpeed only for random-ticked block behavior.

To speed up the whole game simulation in a Minecraft Java Edition version that supports it, run /tick rate 40. You need elevated permissions, such as operator access. If you only want crops or other randomly updated blocks to change faster, use the randomTickSpeed game rule instead; it does not speed up the entire simulation.

Increase the overall game tick rate

Mojang introduced the /tick command as an administrative tool in Java Edition 1.20.3. The command sets a target ticking rate in ticks per second; the usual default is 20. The official release notes describe a range greater than 1.0 and less than 10000.0, but that documented range is specific to the version and may not describe every later release. Check command help in your installed version.

  1. Get elevated permissions. Use a world or server where you have operator or administrator access. The 1.20.3 release notes say the command requires elevated permissions and is not available by default in command blocks or data packs.
  2. Check the current rate. Enter /tick query in chat to view the target rate and performance information.
  3. Set a higher target. For example, enter /tick rate 40 to request 40 ticks per second.
  4. Check performance again. Run /tick query and adjust the target if performance suffers. Mojang warns that a rate too high for the system can crash the game.

At targets below 20 ticks per second, the 1.20.3 notes say player simulation—including movement and input—also slows. Above 20, player simulation stays at 20 ticks per second to preserve responsiveness, although entity interpolation artifacts may occur. These details are version-specific.

Choose the right setting for the behavior you want

Goal Command or setting What it changes
Speed up or slow down the overall simulation /tick rate <number> Sets the target ticking rate. Introduced in Java Edition 1.20.3; consult that version’s release notes for the documented behavior.
Change the pace of crops and other random-ticked blocks /gamerule randomTickSpeed <integer> Changes selected random-tick-driven processes, not the overall simulation target. Mojang’s 23w31a snapshot notes discuss effects on crops, snow and ice accumulation, and copper oxidation.

Use randomTickSpeed when you want a random-tick-driven block process to happen at a different pace. It is not a substitute for /tick rate when the goal is to accelerate the whole game.

Other tick commands

The Java Edition 1.20.3 release notes also document /tick freeze, /tick step, /tick unfreeze, and /tick sprint. They pause ticking, advance it in steps, resume it, or run ticks as fast as possible temporarily. They are debugging controls, not replacements for setting a sustained rate with /tick rate.
