To increase a weapon’s Proficiency in The First Descendant, equip it and earn Proficiency through gameplay. Nexon’s Update 1.4.0 notes say that when Proficiency is gained, every equipped weapon receives the same amount—so the weapon does not need to be in your character’s hands. Proficiency currently caps at level 40.
How to level the weapon you want
- Equip the weapon you want to progress before starting gameplay that awards Weapon Proficiency.
- Play missions or other content you can clear reliably. Under Nexon’s Update 1.4.0 rule, all equipped weapons gain the same Proficiency when it is awarded, so you can level multiple equipped weapons at once.
- Check the weapon’s Proficiency level in your inventory as you progress. The cap is level 40.
Nexon’s official sources do not publish a current Proficiency formula or rank activities by Proficiency gained per minute. Choose repeatable content that suits your character and equipment rather than relying on an unverified claim that one activity is the fastest.
What Weapon Proficiency does—and does not mean
Weapon Proficiency is a progression level used for weapon module socket customization. It is distinct from Weapon Level: Nexon’s advanced growth guide discusses Weapon Level, Weapon Option Readjustment, Unique Ability enhancements, and Proficiency-based socketing as separate systems. The sources cited here do not establish that raising Proficiency increases a firearm’s attack stats.
Why level a weapon to 40?
At Proficiency level 40, you can use a Crystallization Catalyst to assign a module socket type to a weapon. Assigning the type resets that weapon’s Proficiency to level 1, according to Nexon Support.

A module that matches an assigned socket type costs less Capacity. The reset is therefore part of customizing a weapon’s module setup: it lets you add socket types that make a planned build more capacity-efficient. See Nexon’s Advanced Growth Guide for the socket assignment and matching rules. The official sources cited here do not confirm whether leveling the same weapon again after a Catalyst grants Mastery EXP again.
How Weapon Proficiency contributes to Mastery Rank
Increasing weapon Proficiency is one way to earn Mastery EXP. Nexon’s Mastery Rank guide also lists leveling a Descendant, first-time Mission completions, and Quest rewards. A Mission does not grant Mastery EXP from its second completion onward, so repeating missions is not a repeatable Mastery EXP source under that rule.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older leveling advice may differ
Some older player guides describe Proficiency being weighted toward the weapon currently held. Nexon’s Update 1.4.0 notes specify equal Proficiency for all equipped weapons when it is gained. For current advice, equip the weapons you want to level rather than depending on older claims about a held-weapon bonus.
