How to Increase Your Chances of Catching a Shiny Pokémon

The best way to improve your shiny chances depends on the Pokémon game you are playing. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon use SOS chaining, Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! use Catch Combos, and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet feature special mass-outbreak opportunities. A Shiny Charm can help in games that offer one, but its unlock requirement is different by title.

Choose your game first, then use the method that belongs to it. The approximate 4,000-to-1 normal encounter figure often quoted online applies to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon without the Shiny Charm; it is not a franchise-wide rate. None of the methods below guarantees that the next encounter will be shiny.

Shiny mechanics are not shared across the entire Pokémon series. A strategy that improves encounters in one release may be unavailable or irrelevant in another. Use this table to select the correct route before you begin hunting.

What the odds actually mean

The only broad number documented here

Official Pokémon guidance for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon describes the approximate chance of encountering a shiny in a normal encounter without the Shiny Charm as “about 4,000 to 1.” That is an estimate for those two games and that specific situation. It is not a universal Pokémon statistic and should not be transferred to Let’s Go, Scarlet, Violet or another generation.

Why a boosted method can still feel unlucky

A higher chance changes the odds of each eligible encounter; it does not schedule a shiny after a fixed number of attempts. You can see one early, or go through many encounters without one. A Catch Combo over 30, an SOS chain or an event outbreak therefore improves the hunting setup rather than guaranteeing a result.

What the Shiny Charm does

In games that provide it, the Shiny Charm increases shiny encounter chances. Completing a Pokédex is a common way to unlock it, but the required Pokédex and the exact reward process vary by title. Treat the charm as a game-specific unlock, not a transferable universal item.

Prepare the strongest setup available

1. Open your Alola Pokédex and check which entries are still missing.
2. Complete the Alola Pokédex if you want to pursue the Shiny Charm. The official strategy guidance identifies this completion as the route to receiving the charm in these games.
3. Choose the species and location you intend to hunt, then make sure your party, healing items and spare supplies are ready for a prolonged series of battles.

The charm is an optional improvement: SOS chaining remains the central method. If completing the Pokédex is not practical, you can still build a chain and benefit from the chain mechanic.

Build and maintain an SOS chain

1. Enter an encounter with the Pokémon you want to hunt.
2. Use the game’s SOS-battle mechanics to continue the encounter as additional Pokémon are called into the battle.
3. Continue the chain rather than ending the encounter after a single battle. The official guidance states that a longer chain increases the chance that a shiny will appear.
4. When a shiny appears, catch it and record the chain or location information you want to remember before moving on.

The important decision is whether to keep extending the chain. A short chain gives you fewer boosted opportunities; a longer chain requires more time and more chances to make a mistake. Set aside enough healing and capture supplies so that resource problems do not force you to stop.

Reduce avoidable chain failures

• Keep the target species and your intended hunting location written down before starting, especially if you are alternating between several targets.
• Check your party and bag before each session so a low-health Pokémon or an empty supply does not end the chain unexpectedly.
• Use a consistent routine for each battle. Repeating the same checks is safer than improvising when the chain becomes long.
• Do not treat the approximate 4,000-to-1 figure as a promise that a particular chain length will produce a shiny. The figure describes a normal encounter without the charm, while the chain is a separate probability-increasing method.

When SOS hunting is the right choice

SOS chaining is the best-documented ongoing method in these two games. It does not depend on a temporary event, so you can plan sessions around your own time. Its trade-off is attention: a longer chain takes sustained play and can be lost if you end the encounter or run out of resources. Players who want a repeatable, non-event hunt should start here.

Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!: build a Catch Combo

Catch the same species repeatedly

In the Let’s Go games, the official strategy is to catch the same species over and over to build a Catch Combo. The combo is tied to consecutive catches of that species, so decide on a target before you begin rather than mixing unrelated Pokémon into the sequence.

1. Find the species you want to hunt in an area where it appears regularly.
2. Catch that species repeatedly to raise the combo counter.
3. Continue until the counter is above 30. Pokémon.com describes a Catch Combo of more than 30 as maximizing the potential bonuses.
4. Keep the combo intact while you continue encountering and catching the target.

The “more than 30” threshold is a bonus maximum described by the official guidance, not a guarantee of a shiny encounter. A large combo can still require patience.

Add a Lure

Lures are another part of the official shiny-hunting recommendation for Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!. Activate one after you have a stable route and enough time to use it. Lures improve the hunting setup by increasing the relevant encounter bonuses, but they do not replace the Catch Combo or force a shiny to spawn before the lure expires.

Use the Shiny Charm when available

The Shiny Charm can further increase shiny odds in these games. Its availability and Pokédex prerequisite should be confirmed in your version’s in-game progression; do not assume that the unlock steps are identical to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Once you have it, combine it with the Catch Combo and a Lure for the strongest documented combination in this game context.

Protect the combo during a long session

• Keep catching the same species rather than switching targets midway through the session.
• Plan your route, storage space and healing before building the combo so you are not forced to stop at the threshold.
• Watch the counter after every catch. If it no longer reflects the sequence you intended, pause and verify the cause before spending more time on the hunt.
• Expect variation. The official warning is direct: “But you shouldn’t expect to find a Shiny Pokémon quickly even with a large Catch Combo!”

Scarlet and Violet: watch for special mass outbreaks

Understand what an event outbreak changes

Official notices for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet have announced special mass outbreaks in which shiny Pokémon were more likely to appear. These are event opportunities, not a permanent rate that applies to every outbreak in the game. The notice cited for this guide covered scheduled events from July through September 2025, so those dates have passed.

Check the current notice before you travel or reset

1. Look for a current official event notice naming Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
2. Read the start and end dates, featured species and any regional or version restrictions.
3. Update the game and obtain the latest Poké Portal News and update data when the notice requires it. The 2025 event guidance specified both.
4. Only then plan your outbreak session. If the dates have ended, do not assume the same shiny increase is still active.

Because event schedules change, an old notice cannot establish that an outbreak is active today. Confirm the current announcement immediately before playing.

Plan around the limited window

Event hunting rewards preparation more than blind repetition. Clear storage space, prepare your capture team and decide which featured species matters most before the event begins. If several targets are available, rank them so you do not spend the entire window deciding where to start. Keep a written note of the event’s end time in your local time zone and leave a buffer for updates or connection checks.

What is not established by the available guidance

The official material cited here does not provide a comprehensive current odds table for standard Scarlet and Violet shiny hunting, nor does it establish that every ordinary mass outbreak has the same increase as a named event. • Check counters, supplies and event status at sensible intervals.

If nothing appears

Nothing appearing after a long session does not prove that the method failed. Recheck the title, charm status, chain or combo condition and, for Scarlet and Violet, whether the event dates and update data are still valid. Then resume with the game-specific method rather than switching to a rate taken from another release.

The practical answer

There is no single best shiny-hunting trick for every Pokémon game. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, build an SOS chain and consider the Alola Pokédex-based Shiny Charm; the normal no-charm encounter estimate is about 4,000 to 1. In Let’s Go, raise a same-species Catch Combo above 30, then add a Lure and the Shiny Charm if you have it. In Scarlet and Violet, verify current official notices and use an active special mass outbreak rather than relying on an expired event. These steps improve your chances, but patience remains part of the method because no documented setup guarantees a fast shiny.
