What a custom server JAR changes
A server JAR is the program that starts a Minecraft Java Edition server. Vanilla is Mojang’s server software; Paper is a performance-focused, plugin-compatible replacement for vanilla; Fabric is a mod-loader-based server launcher. A hosting panel may call any non-default file a custom JAR, even when the file is a standard Paper or Fabric release.

The filename in your start command is not cosmetic. If the uploaded file is named paper-1.21.8-42.jar, a command that still points to paper.jar will fail unless you renamed the file or changed the command. Linux filenames are case-sensitive, and many panels likewise require an exact match.
This procedure is for Minecraft: Java Edition. Mojang’s server guidance states that a compatible Java Runtime Environment is required to launch the server JAR. Players connecting from outside the host’s local network may also need firewall rules and router port forwarding.

Decide what you are installing before touching the server
Record the target version and loader
- Minecraft version, such as 1.20.4, 1.20.5 or a 1.21 release.
- Server software: vanilla, Paper, Fabric or another loader.
- Whether the server uses plugins, Fabric mods or Forge mods.
- The Java version required by that software and Minecraft version.
- The host panel’s custom-JAR rules, including permitted directories, startup fields and available Java runtimes.
- The current JAR filename and the world, configuration and startup files that must be preserved.
Do not choose software only because its filename looks interchangeable. Plugins are written for plugin-capable server software such as Paper, while Fabric mods require Fabric and their matching mod files. A world containing blocks, items or other data added by Fabric or Forge cannot simply be moved to Paper.

Compatibility tables change as Minecraft releases change. Treat the software project’s version table as the authority for a release not listed above, rather than assuming that the Java version from an older installation remains valid.

- Tell players the server will be offline and record the current Minecraft version and software.
- Stop the server from the panel’s Stop control or by entering
stopin the server console. Wait until the process exits completely. - Copy the entire world directory, including every dimension folder, to storage outside the live server directory.
- Back up
server.properties, the EULA file, operator and whitelist files, plugin or mod directories, configuration files and the startup script or panel settings. - Keep the old JAR until the new software has started successfully and players have confirmed that the expected world and add-ons load.
Paper’s update guidance specifically warns that replacing a JAR while the server is running is unsafe. A running process can keep the old file open, write an incomplete world save, or leave a mixture of old and new files. Stopping first is the safe boundary for every loader.
Download the correct server software
Vanilla
Use Mojang’s official Java Edition server download for the exact Minecraft version you intend to run. Keep the downloaded filename visible; either use that name in the startup command or rename it deliberately and update every reference to it.

Paper
Download the runnable Paper JAR for the exact Minecraft release from Paper’s project distribution. Paper’s short example is java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui. If the downloaded file has a versioned name, substitute that exact name for paper.jar, or rename the file to paper.jar and use that stable name consistently.
Fabric
Fabric’s simple installation method downloads an executable server launcher with the selected Minecraft and loader versions built into it. Fabric documents a command in the form java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launcher.jar nogui; replace the example filename with the actual launcher filename. On Minecraft-specific hosts, administration panels and start scripts, Fabric says the launcher can be used as a drop-in replacement for a vanilla server JAR.

Manual Fabric installation is different from merely uploading one file. The launcher expects a vanilla server.jar and creates or uses supporting files. A remote installation may require the launcher, server.properties, the vanilla server.jar and the libraries directory. Treat those files as one coordinated installation; do not rename the launcher and delete the other files in an attempt to make it look like a standalone JAR.
Install the JAR in a hosting panel
Panel labels differ between hosts, but the sequence is consistent. The panel must start the file from the directory where you uploaded it, with a Java runtime that can execute it.

- Open the server’s file manager or SFTP location. Navigate to the same server directory that contains
server.propertiesand the current world folders. Do not upload the JAR into a temporary downloads directory or into a plugin or mod folder. - Upload the downloaded file. Use the panel’s upload control or SFTP. For a manual Fabric installation, upload every required supporting file and directory, preserving the directory structure.
- Open the startup or configuration page. Look for a field labelled Server JAR, Custom JAR, JAR file or similar. Some panels show a selector; others require typing the filename.
- Choose the exact filename. Enter the complete case-sensitive name, including the
.jarextension. If the panel has a custom-JAR toggle, enable it instead of leaving the old vanilla selection active. - Select a compatible Java runtime. Choose Java 17, 21 or 25 according to the software’s documented Minecraft range. A panel may offer several runtime images with similar labels; select the one that corresponds to the required major version.
- Review memory and arguments. Preserve the host’s memory settings unless you have a reason to change them. A Paper example is
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui; a Fabric example isjava -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launcher.jar nogui. The panel normally supplies the leadingjavacommand and memory flags for you. - Save without starting yet. Recheck the filename, directory and Java selection. A typo here produces an immediate startup error that looks like a software problem.
- Start and watch the live console. Stay on the log page through the first launch. Record any class-version, missing-file, EULA or mod-loader error before trying another change.
If the panel does not expose a custom-JAR option, check whether it requires a particular filename such as server.jar, a startup-template edit or an administrator-only setting. Do not overwrite unrelated files until you know which rule the panel applies.
Install from a shell or with SFTP
Self-hosted servers and some managed hosts let you control the startup script directly. Upload the JAR into the server directory, change into that directory before launching, and use the exact filename after -jar.
- Verify the runtime available to the account with
java -version. Compare the reported major version with the software’s compatibility table. - Upload the JAR and any required supporting files with SFTP or the host’s file tool. Confirm that the file appears in the directory containing the world and
server.properties. - Edit the startup script so its
-jarargument matches the uploaded filename. For Paper, a valid pattern isjava -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui. For Fabric’s launcher, usejava -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launcher.jar nogui. - Run the script from the server directory. A relative filename works only when the working directory is correct; use an absolute path if your service starts in another directory.
- Leave the console attached until the first startup reaches its normal ready state or reports the EULA requirement. Stop the process cleanly before editing files again.
The flags in these examples are not universal memory prescriptions. -Xms4G and -Xmx4G request a four-gigabyte initial and maximum heap for the Paper example, while the Fabric example requests a two-gigabyte maximum heap. Set memory within the amount your machine or plan actually provides.
Complete the first launch and EULA step
Mojang’s setup process creates initial files during the first run. If the console reports that the EULA has not been accepted, stop or let the process exit, open the generated eula.txt, read the agreement and change its setting only if you accept it. Start the server again afterward.

Do not treat the appearance of a log window as proof that installation succeeded. Wait for a normal startup message, then confirm that the intended world directory is loaded. A new world being generated when you expected an existing one usually means the server is using a different working directory, a different level name or an incomplete upload.

Check the software and Java in the log
Look for the Minecraft version, loader or Paper version, Java major version and a clean completion of startup. An UnsupportedClassVersionError indicates that the Java runtime is too old for at least one class in the server software. Stop the server, select the documented Java version and start again; changing memory flags will not fix a class-version mismatch.
Check the world and add-ons
- Confirm that the expected world name and all dimensions appear in the log.
- For Paper, verify that intended plugins load and that no plugin reports an incompatible API or Minecraft version.
- For Fabric, verify that the launcher finds the libraries and that every mod dependency is present and built for the selected Minecraft and loader versions.
- Watch for missing registries, unknown blocks or item errors before allowing players to save new progress.
Make a local connection test
Connect from the same machine or local network first. This separates a server-startup problem from an Internet routing problem. If local connection works but remote players cannot connect, inspect the server bind address, host firewall and router port forwarding. Mojang’s guidance notes that outside connections can require those network changes; the exact port and rule depend on your network and server configuration.

When replacing vanilla with Paper is appropriate
Paper’s migration guidance describes downloading Paper and replacing the vanilla server JAR. This is appropriate when the world is vanilla-compatible and the server’s add-ons are Paper plugins. Preserve the world and configuration backup even for a routine migration, because software changes can expose plugin or version incompatibilities.

When Paper is the wrong replacement
Paper cannot load a Fabric or Forge world that contains mod-added blocks, items or other game data. If players have built with those additions, switching the startup filename to Paper does not convert the world. Restore the backup and use the original loader, or follow a loader-specific migration plan that explicitly handles the added data.
When Fabric’s launcher is appropriate
Use Fabric when the server depends on Fabric mods or when a host specifically supports the Fabric launcher as a drop-in replacement. The launcher and its libraries must match the selected Minecraft and loader versions. A Fabric launcher file by itself is not a substitute for the complete manual installation set when the installation method expects server.jar and a libraries directory.

Maintain the custom JAR safely
- Keep a dated copy of the last working JAR and the startup configuration.
- Back up the world before every software or Minecraft-version change, not only before the first installation.
- Stop the server cleanly before replacing a JAR, plugin, loader or library.
- Change one major variable at a time: Minecraft version, Java version, server software and add-ons should not all be changed in one step.
- Read the loader’s release notes for migration requirements, especially when a world or mod set crosses a Minecraft version boundary.
- After an upgrade, check the log, join with an administrator account, inspect a representative area of the world and test the features supplied by your plugins or mods.
A stable filename such as paper.jar can simplify scripts, while a versioned filename makes rollback obvious. Either approach works if the startup configuration is updated deliberately and the previous file remains available for recovery.

The reliable pattern is simple: identify the loader and Minecraft version, back up the data, stop the process, install the complete file set, select the exact JAR name, match Java, complete the EULA and validate the world before players return. That sequence prevents the most damaging mistakes—running the wrong Java, launching from the wrong directory and opening modded data with an incompatible server.
