Press F1 in the PC version of Rust to open the in-game console. From there, ordinary players can check performance, network health and combat history, while authorized moderators and server administrators can teleport, spawn entities, manage players and change server settings. Use find <term> whenever you cannot remember a command, and run writecfg after creating keybinds you want to keep.

How the Rust F1 console works

The Rust in-game console is accessed by pressing F1. The F1 interface also exposes Info, Net, Items and Tools tabs. Those tabs can show diagnostics or offer item and administration functions, but spawning content and using administrative tools still require the permissions granted by the server.

Commands are typed into the console and submitted with Enter. Many are client-side and affect only your display or local character. Others target a player, entity or the entire server. A command that is valid in one context can fail silently or return a permissions error in another, so identify your role before using it.

Find commands you do not remember

The useful-command list maintained for Rust is intentionally incomplete, and command names and permissions can change after patches. In the current console, run:

Rust Key Cards, Rust Red Key Card, Cobalt Restricted Access Cards, Rust Gift For Gamers, Blue Key Card, Green Key Card (ALL THREE)
  • Inspired by the Rust Video Game – These cards replicate the iconic keycards found in Rust (Red, Blue, Green).
  • High Quality PVC Plastic – Printed on both sides, durable and water-resistant. Not a sticker.
  • Great Rust Gift Idea – Perfect for fans of Rust, whether for cosplay, loot-themed gifts, or collection.
  • Wallet-Size Replica – Standard 3.375x2.125 inches, 30 mil thick—fits in any wallet.
  • NOT a sticker*
find <text>

The search checks command names, variables and descriptions. For example, find net can reveal current network-related variables, while find teleport lists teleport options available to your permission level. This is safer than guessing a command from an old guide.

Useful commands for ordinary players

These commands are generally useful without moderator or administrator rights. A server can still disable, restrict or modify behavior through its configuration.

Command What it does Scope and notes
fps Prints your current frames per second. Local performance check.
perf 0 through perf 6 Displays progressively more performance information; perf 0 removes the overlay. Local diagnostic overlay. Start with a low level and increase it only when you need more detail.
ping Reports your latency to the connected server. Useful for separating network delay from low frame rate.
combatlog Shows recent damage dealt and received by your character. Local player’s recent combat history. An administrator can inspect another player by supplying that player’s Steam64ID.
console.clear Clears the visible F1 console output. Only changes your local console view.
console.copy Copies the console contents. Useful when reporting an error or saving diagnostic output.
connect IP:Port Connects directly to a server by address. Replace IP:Port with the server address. localhost can be used for a server running on the same computer.
gesture gestureName Performs a supported gesture. Examples include gesture wave, gesture victory, gesture shrug, gesture thumbsup and gesture chicken.
kill Sends your character to the respawn menu. Destructive to the local character: use it only when you intentionally need to respawn.
netgraph.enabled true or false Turns the network-information overlay on or off. Visible while connected; it does not improve the connection.
writecfg Writes current settings and keybinds to configuration files. Run after changing binds you want to survive a restart.

Diagnosing a stutter or lag complaint

  1. Run fps and note whether the frame rate is low.
  2. Run ping to check latency to the server.
  3. Use perf 1 through perf 6 for progressively richer local performance data; return to perf 0 when finished.
  4. Enable netgraph.enabled true if you need an on-screen network view while connected.
  5. Copy relevant errors with console.copy before clearing the console with console.clear.

Low FPS points to a rendering or system problem; high ping points to the route between your computer and the server. They are different symptoms and should not be treated as the same fault.

Administrator and moderator commands

Administrative commands are server-controlled. You need the appropriate authorization on that server, and some commands are restricted to the higher owner level rather than the moderator level. Confirm the target and expected effect before executing anything destructive.

Command Use Risk or scope
users Lists players with Steam64IDs and names. Use it to identify the exact account before granting permissions.
ownerid Steam64ID "Name" Grants the highest administrator authorization level, level 2. Server-wide authority. Verify the Steam64ID carefully.
moderatorid Steam64ID "Name" Grants moderator authorization level 1. Less authority than owner level, but still affects other players.
removeowner Steam64ID Removes owner authorization. Changes persistent authorization for that account.
removemoderator Steam64ID Removes moderator authorization. Changes persistent authorization for that account.
players, playerlist, status Shows connected-player information. status exposes additional session data compared with the basic lists.
kick Removes a player from the server. Moderation action; the player may reconnect unless separately banned.
ban and banid Bans a player by current identity or Steam64ID. Disruptive server-wide action. ban can accept an optional duration and reason.
unban Removes a ban. Verify the identity before reversing moderation.
noclip Lets an authorized administrator move through the world freely. Testing and inspection tool; can bypass normal movement and building context.
god Toggles invulnerability for the administrator. Use in a test context, not during normal play.
heal Restores health. Affects the issuing player unless a target form is accepted by the current build.
refillvitals Refills vital player stats. Administrative maintenance or testing.
ent kill Destroys the entity you are looking at. Destructive. Confirm the crosshair target before pressing Enter.
ent lock and ent unlock Locks or unlocks the looked-at entity. Changes access to the targeted entity.
ent who Identifies the owner of the looked-at entity. Inspection command; ownership information helps resolve building disputes.
teleport Teleports an administrator or target player. Can strand or disorient a player; check the target and destination.
teleport2marker Teleports to the map marker. Convenient for administration and testing.
teleport2me Brings a target player to the administrator. Targeted player movement.
teleportpos Teleports to specified coordinates. Use only with known, safe coordinates.
spawn entity Spawns an entity where the administrator is looking. Can alter the world or server performance.
spawnitem item Spawns an item where the administrator is looking. Economy and progression impact on a live server.
env.time Adjusts the world time. Server-wide environmental change.
weather.load Loads weather settings. Server-wide environmental change; exact accepted values can vary by build.
decay.scale Changes structure decay scaling. Persistent gameplay-balance effect when saved in server configuration.
server.writecfg Writes server settings to configuration. Persistence operation; use after deliberate server-setting changes.

Safe sequence for granting access

  1. Run users and copy the intended player’s Steam64ID, rather than relying on a similar display name.
  2. Grant only the required level with ownerid Steam64ID "Name" for level 2 or moderatorid Steam64ID "Name" for level 1.
  3. Ask the player to disconnect and reconnect. The new authorization level should be applied after reconnecting.
  4. When access is no longer needed, run the matching removeowner Steam64ID or removemoderator Steam64ID command.

Server-console commands and the sv prefix

Some commands are designed for the server console but can also be issued by an in-game administrator when prefixed with sv. For example:

sv say Server restart in five minutes
sv stats

sv say broadcasts a server message. sv stats returns connected-player statistics. The prefix changes the command’s context: it is not a cosmetic alias, and it can expand a local-looking action into a server-wide one.

Do not confuse sv quit with closing the game client. It saves and closes the server. Use it only during an intentional shutdown, with players warned first.

Making yourself an owner or moderator

You must have access to the server console, RCON or an existing owner-level account. A normal player cannot promote themselves through the F1 console.

  1. Open the server console or an authorized administrative console.
  2. Run users to print connected names and Steam64IDs.
  3. Execute ownerid 7656119… "Name" for full owner authorization, or moderatorid 7656119… "Name" for level 1.
  4. Reconnect the account before testing administrative commands.

Replace the ellipsis with the complete Steam64ID. Keep the name in quotation marks when it contains spaces. The server guide’s startup configuration uses settings such as server.port, server.level, server.seed, server.worldsize, server.maxplayers, server.hostname, server.identity, rcon.port, rcon.password and rcon.web. RCON uses a TCP port; change any example password before exposing the service.

Persisting server settings with server.cfg

Runtime commands can disappear on restart. For settings that should load automatically, place them in a server.cfg file under the configuration directory for the server identity. The file is read at startup and uses the command form without the + or - prefixes used on a command line.

Use server.writecfg when you deliberately want the running server’s current settings written out. Review the resulting configuration so a temporary experiment does not become a permanent rule.

Creating and saving Rust keybinds

The bind command connects a key with one or more console commands. Replace the example keys with controls that do not conflict with your own layout.

Purpose Example
Open the console and show combat history bind f1 consoletoggle;combatlog
Move forward while sprinting bind x forward;sprint
Hold crouch bind z duck
Disconnect quickly bind f10 client.disconnect
Admin debug camera bind [leftshift+h] debugcamera
Admin teleport to marker bind [leftshift+t] teleport2marker
Admin destroy looked-at entity bind p "ent kill"
Admin unlock or lock looked-at entity bind u "ent unlock" or bind l "ent lock"
Admin noclip bind j noclip

Commands separated by semicolons run from one bind. Quotation marks keep a multi-word command together. Be especially cautious with binds for client.disconnect, ent kill, teleportation and noclip: a single key press can have an immediate, disruptive effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter each desired bind command in the F1 console.
  2. Test the key in a safe situation.
  3. Run writecfg to write the bindings to the configuration files.
  4. Locate the file through Steam’s Manage → Browse local files flow; Rust stores these binds in keys.cfg in the game directory.

Permissions, scope and risk at a glance

Category Typical examples Who can use it Persistence
Local diagnostics fps, ping, perf, netgraph.enabled Ordinary player Usually runtime display or client setting
Local convenience gesture, kill, console.clear, connect Ordinary player Immediate; connect changes session
Targeted administration kick, ban, teleport2me, ent lock Moderator or owner, depending on command Runtime; bans and authorization affect later sessions
World manipulation spawn, spawnitem, env.time, weather.load Authorized administrator Runtime unless written to server configuration
Configuration and shutdown writecfg, server.writecfg, sv quit Client or server administrator as appropriate Writes files or ends the server process

Troubleshooting command failures

  • “Unknown command” or no result: run find with part of the name. The command may have changed, been removed or require a different spelling in the current patch.
  • Permission denied: confirm the account’s owner or moderator status, then reconnect. A command intended for the server console may need the sv prefix.
  • The bind vanished after restarting: run writecfg; runtime binds are not guaranteed to be saved automatically.
  • The wrong entity was changed: look directly at the intended object before using ent kill, ent lock or ent unlock. These commands act on the entity under your crosshair.
  • Teleport or spawn behaves unexpectedly: verify the target, marker and coordinates, and test on a private or controlled server before using a live world.
  • RCON will not connect: check the configured TCP port, confirm the password was changed from any example value, and verify that the server’s RCON web setting matches the connection method.

Use destructive commands deliberately

kill, ent kill, bans, teleport commands, item spawning and sv quit can immediately affect a character, another player or the entire server. Check the current command description with find, announce disruptive maintenance, and keep a backup of important configuration before changing persistent settings. Because Rust patches can alter defaults and permission behavior, treat the live console’s output as the authoritative reference for the build you are running.
