To install a resource pack in Minecraft Java Edition, download a Java-compatible pack as a .zip, open Options > Resource Packs > Open Resource Pack Folder, copy the ZIP into that folder, select the pack under Available Resource Packs, and click Done. Leave the ZIP compressed. If Minecraft does not list it, check that pack.mcmeta is at the archive’s top level and that the pack targets the Java version you are playing.

What you need before installing
The procedure is short, but two compatibility checks prevent most failed installations. Resource packs are the current Minecraft name for what older guides call texture packs. This article covers Minecraft Java Edition, whose normal installation format is a ZIP file placed in the resource-pack folder exposed by the game.

Choose a download explicitly labeled for Minecraft Java Edition. Java and Bedrock use different packaging and import workflows. A Bedrock .mcpack file is not a substitute for the Java ZIP procedure below; treating the two formats as interchangeable is a common source of confusion. If a page offers downloads for both editions, make sure you choose the Java file rather than relying on the words “resource pack” or “texture pack” in the page title.
A release for your Minecraft version
Resource packs are made for particular Minecraft releases. Select a pack release intended for the Java version currently installed in your launcher. Minecraft may mark a pack as incompatible when its metadata targets a different release, and a pack made for another version may not change the textures you expect even if it appears in the menu. Check the pack’s release choices before downloading, especially if the download page lists several versions.

The original ZIP file
Keep the Java pack compressed as .zip. Do not unzip it for the normal installation workflow. The ZIP is the file Minecraft reads when it scans the resource-pack folder. If the download arrives in another container or includes multiple files, identify the Java pack archive itself; do not substitute a document or a Bedrock package.
Install a resource pack step by step
1. Download and identify the correct file
Download the Java Edition resource pack and locate the resulting ZIP on your computer. If a download contains several files, use the archive intended for the Minecraft Java version you play rather than a Bedrock package or a document describing the pack.
Do not rename the archive in a way that removes its .zip extension, and do not extract its contents into a separate folder for this procedure. Keeping the archive intact gives Minecraft one package to detect and activate. The download’s edition and version labels are useful checks before you copy anything into the game folder.
2. Open Minecraft Java Edition
Start the Java Edition installation that you intend to play. The menu labels below apply to the Java resource-pack screen; Bedrock Edition has a different import process and should not be used as a reference for these clicks.
3. Open the Resource Packs screen
From the title screen, choose Options, then choose Resource Packs. Mojang’s published instructions use those exact labels. The Resource Packs screen contains the lists Minecraft uses to distinguish packs that are available from packs that are currently active.
4. Open Minecraft’s resource-pack folder
On the Resource Packs screen, select Open Resource Pack Folder. Minecraft opens the folder it is actually configured to scan. This in-game button is more reliable than guessing an operating-system path, because it takes you directly to the profile and installation that is running. Mojang’s Minecraft.net instructions, published December 10, 2018, use this same button as the folder-opening step.

Leave the folder window open or minimize it while you finish the copy. If more than one Minecraft installation is present on your computer, using the button from the running game helps ensure that you place the file in the right installation’s folder. You do not need to locate or type a folder path manually.
5. Copy the ZIP into the folder
Copy or move the downloaded Java resource-pack .zip into the folder Minecraft opened. The archive itself should sit in that folder; there is no normal Java requirement to create another directory around it, and extracting the archive is unnecessary.
When the copy finishes, return to Minecraft. If the pack does not appear immediately, close and reopen the Resource Packs screen so Minecraft rescans the folder. Keep the ZIP in place while selecting it; deleting it after activation can make the pack unavailable the next time Minecraft loads the list. If you are unsure whether you copied the correct file, check that the file in the folder is the Java ZIP you selected rather than a similarly named Bedrock download.
6. Move the pack to the active list and apply it
Under Available Resource Packs, find the pack you copied. Select it to move it into Minecraft’s selected or active resource-pack list, then choose Done. Minecraft reloads its resources and applies the selected pack. Mojang’s instructions describe the same sequence: the new pack should appear in Available Resource Packs, and selecting it completes the setup.
If several packs are selected, each can supply different assets. Where two selected packs change the same texture, another pack can override the result. For a first test, activate only the pack you are checking so that an older selection cannot hide its changes. You can add other packs back after verifying the new one.
How to verify that the installation worked
Check the pack’s position in the menu
Return to the Resource Packs screen after choosing Done. The pack should remain in the selected or active list rather than returning to Available Resource Packs. Its presence there confirms that Minecraft accepted the archive as a resource pack. Mojang’s December 10, 2018 instructions likewise direct players to find the new texture pack under Available Resource Packs, select it, and finish.

Inspect a changed asset in a world
Open a world and look at a block, item, mob, interface element, or other asset that the pack is meant to change. Resource packs differ in scope: some alter only a few blocks, while others change broad groups of textures or interface graphics. Test an asset named or shown in the pack’s own description rather than assuming every part of the game will look different.
This is also a useful way to compare packs before settling on one. Think about which assets matter to you, whether the pack covers those assets, and whether you can easily identify one in a world. A pack that changes a narrow set of textures may be installed correctly even if most of the world looks exactly as it did before.

Interpret a successful and an inconclusive test
A changed target texture with the pack still selected is a practical confirmation that installation succeeded. If the world looks unchanged, that does not automatically mean the copy failed: the selected pack may not modify the asset you inspected, or another selected pack may be providing the visible version. Deselect other packs and test the intended asset again before replacing the ZIP.
Troubleshoot common installation failures

When the archive is invisible
The most important structural check is pack.mcmeta. Open the ZIP with an archive utility and look at its first level. The metadata file must be directly at the archive root. A frequent mistake is a ZIP containing one outer folder, with pack.mcmeta one level deeper inside that folder. Minecraft may then fail to recognize the archive as a conventional resource pack.
Do not solve this by blindly extracting every file into the resource-pack folder. The normal Java workflow expects the pack’s ZIP. If the archive has an unnecessary outer folder, use a correctly packaged release or rebuild the ZIP so that pack.mcmeta is at the top level while preserving the pack’s internal files. If repackaging is unfamiliar, obtaining a properly packaged release avoids changing the archive structure incorrectly.
When Minecraft reports incompatibility
An incompatibility notice is a version warning, not a prompt to convert Java into Bedrock or to rename the file. Return to the pack’s download choices and select the release made for the Java version you run. Compatibility matters both for the warning itself and for whether the pack can provide the assets it promises. If no matching release is listed, do not assume the Bedrock file is an equivalent replacement; its import process is different.

When another pack hides the result
Minecraft can keep more than one resource pack selected. If two packs change the same asset, the visible result can come from only one of them. Remove competing selections for the test: move the other pack out of the active list, choose Done, and inspect the target texture again. Once you know which pack supplies the desired asset, re-enable other packs one at a time to identify conflicts.
Java and Bedrock formats are not interchangeable
Search results often use “texture pack” for both editions, but the file handling is different. Use the comparison below before downloading.

A file can be called a texture pack in a download title and still be the wrong edition. Read the edition label and file extension together; the extension alone is not a reason to attempt the Java steps with a Bedrock download.

If several downloads support your edition and release, compare them on the characteristics that affect installation and testing:

Disable or replace a pack
You do not need to delete the ZIP to stop using a resource pack. Open the Resource Packs screen, move the pack out of the selected or active list, and choose Done so Minecraft reloads without it. Keeping the ZIP in the folder lets you select it again later.
To replace an older release, first remove the old selection, place the new Java-compatible ZIP in the folder opened by Minecraft, select the new release under Available Resource Packs, and apply it with Done. If both releases remain selected, overlapping assets can obscure which version is active, so testing with one release selected is clearer. The in-game folder button remains the reliable place to add the replacement ZIP.

Where official texture packs fit
Minecraft’s official site also presents texture packs through its Marketplace and includes a pathway for creators who want to become partners. Marketplace availability is separate from the local Java ZIP procedure described here: a pack obtained through another distribution method must still be a Java-compatible ZIP before you use the Resource Packs folder workflow. The Marketplace page identifies a Texture Packs category and a Become a Partner link; that does not by itself establish that an individual pack is available as a Java ZIP or that a publisher program offers any particular commission or tracking terms.

- Is the file for Java Edition? If not, stop and obtain the Java version.
- Is it a ZIP for your Minecraft Java release? Keep it compressed and use the matching release.
- Did you use Minecraft’s Open Resource Pack Folder button? If not, return to the Resource Packs screen and open the folder from there.
- Is
pack.mcmetaat the ZIP root? If not, obtain or rebuild a correctly structured archive. - Does the pack appear under Available Resource Packs? Select it and choose Done.
- Can you see a promised texture change? Test the intended asset with competing packs disabled.
