Install the control panel on a freshly provisioned Ubuntu LTS VPS, not on a server that already runs Apache, Nginx, PHP, MySQL, MariaDB, or mail services. First verify the panel’s Ubuntu release, CPU architecture, memory, storage, hostname, and root-access requirements. Then run the vendor’s current installer, create a domain and database in the panel, select PHP 8.3 or newer, enable HTTPS, and finish WordPress’s browser installation.

What you need before installing
A control panel installer replaces or configures major parts of a server stack. Existing web servers, database packages, mail daemons, firewall rules, and PHP configurations can conflict with the installer or leave an unpredictable system. Provision a new Ubuntu LTS image and treat the panel installation as the first application-level operation on that VPS.

Check the panel’s own requirements immediately before installation because supported releases change. HestiaCP currently lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 LTS. ISPConfig documents Ubuntu 22.04 through 26.04 for its supported installation paths. aaPanel recommends Ubuntu 22.04 when you are unsure which release to choose. CyberPanel requires a fresh supported server, so confirm its current operating-system list before provisioning.
Choose the architecture that the selected panel and its packages support. Confirm whether your VPS is x86_64/AMD64 or ARM64, and verify that the panel’s installer supports that architecture rather than assuming that an Ubuntu image alone is sufficient.

Start with a genuinely fresh server
Hestia’s documentation states that it must be installed on top of a fresh operating-system installation for proper functionality. The same principle is prudent for the other panels: do not preinstall a web stack, Docker-based web proxy, database server, mail server, alternate PHP repository, or hosting software. If you need to preserve an existing site, take a backup and migrate it to a new panel-managed VPS instead of installing over the old stack.
Meet the resource baseline, then size for the workload

Panel minimums only describe whether an installer may run. WordPress memory use depends on traffic, themes, plugins, scheduled jobs, backups, caching, and whether you also host mail. A small test site may run on the minimum; a production site with a mail stack and several plugins should start closer to Hestia’s 4-core, 4-GB recommendation and leave free disk for backups, logs, updates, and database growth.

- Obtain the VPS provider’s root password or an SSH key that can become root. Panel installers generally require root privileges.
- Set a fully qualified hostname such as
panel.example.comand make sure it resolves to the VPS address. A resolvable hostname avoids certificate and mail-service problems later. - Log in over SSH and apply the provider’s current Ubuntu security updates before running the panel installer.
- Take a provider snapshot or full backup. Record the snapshot time so you can roll back if the installer fails.
- Keep a secure record of the panel URL, port, administrator name, and password. Do not leave credentials in shell history, tickets, or public notes.
Choose a panel for the WordPress stack you actually want
All four panels can manage websites, but they make different server and administration choices. Decide first whether you need Nginx/PHP-FPM, Apache, OpenLiteSpeed, a visual operations dashboard, or multi-server controls. Then confirm that the chosen panel exposes PHP 8.3 or newer and MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 before committing to it.

Do not select a panel solely because it advertises one-click WordPress. A one-click action is useful only if it produces a maintainable virtual host, a supported PHP version, a dedicated database account, valid TLS, and a backup path you understand.

Install the panel safely
1. Connect and verify the server state
- Connect by SSH using the VPS address and a root-capable account.
- Confirm the release and architecture with the standard Ubuntu system information commands supplied by your provider or the panel’s guide.
- Check that no unwanted Apache, Nginx, PHP, MySQL, MariaDB, Postfix, or other hosting service was preinstalled. A provider image described as “LAMP” or “LEMP” is not a clean starting point.
- Verify the hostname resolves publicly and that the VPS clock and DNS resolver are working.
- Create the snapshot or backup if you have not already done so.
2. Read the current vendor installer page
Use only the command currently published by the panel vendor. Install scripts change as Ubuntu releases, PHP versions, repositories, and security defaults change. Do not paste an old command copied from a forum or video without comparing it with the current official documentation.
For HestiaCP, the documented pattern is to download hst-install.sh and execute it as root. Its installer lets you set the hostname, administrator email and password, web server, PHP-FPM, database, firewall, Fail2Ban, and panel port. CyberPanel likewise directs administrators to its official installer after checking a fresh supported server. aaPanel and ISPConfig provide their own current commands and installation paths; use the one matching your Ubuntu release and architecture.

3. Run the installer and record its output
- Start a persistent SSH session so a brief network interruption does not abandon the process.
- Run the exact official installer as root.
- Read every prompt instead of accepting defaults blindly. Decide whether you need mail services, antivirus, firewall automation, Fail2Ban, additional PHP versions, and the panel’s chosen web server.
- Save the final screen output, especially the administrator URL, port, username, and generated password. Store it in a password manager.
- Wait for the installer to finish and reboot only when the vendor’s instructions say it is safe.
Expect the installer to configure services, repositories, firewall rules, users, virtual-host templates, and database components. Interrupting it midway can leave a partially configured system that is harder to repair than a restored snapshot.
Secure and configure the first login
Open the panel on its documented address
Use the hostname and port printed by the installer. HestiaCP uses port 8083 by default. Other panels use different ports or may let you choose one. If the page does not load, test the VPS provider firewall, the Ubuntu firewall, the panel service status, and whether DNS points to the correct address.

Protect the administrator interface
- Change any temporary or automatically generated password and use a unique, long passphrase.
- Restrict the panel port to your administration IP range with the provider firewall or an allowlist where practical.
- Keep SSH key access available for recovery, but disable password SSH login only after confirming that your key works in a second session.
- Enable the panel’s HTTPS certificate workflow for its own hostname.
- Review enabled services and remove mail or other components you will not operate; fewer exposed services mean fewer updates and attack surfaces.
Check DNS before creating the site
Create an A record for the root domain and, if needed, a CNAME or A record for www. Add an AAAA record only when IPv6 is configured end to end. Make sure the panel hostname and the WordPress domain resolve to the VPS before requesting certificates. DNS changes can be cached, so verify from more than one network if a record appears stale.
Create the WordPress site in the panel
The labels differ between panels, but the underlying sequence is consistent. A panel may offer a WordPress wizard that performs several of these actions; inspect the resulting settings so you know what it created.
- Create the website or domain. Enter the exact hostname you will publish, choose the document root, and select the web server template supplied by the panel.
- Select PHP. Choose PHP 8.3 or newer if the panel supports it. Do not downgrade solely because an old plugin requests an end-of-life version; replace or update that plugin instead, or isolate the legacy site while you plan a migration.
- Create a database and dedicated user. Choose MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.11 or newer. Generate a long database password and grant the user access only to this site’s database.
- Install WordPress. Use the panel’s installer, or upload the official WordPress package into the document root with the panel’s file manager or an authenticated transfer.
- Create
wp-config.phpwhen required. Enter the database name, user, password, host, and table prefix. Keep the file readable by the web process but not writable by unrelated users. - Run the browser installer. Visit the domain over HTTPS, choose the site title, create the WordPress administrator account, and set a unique password. Do not use the database password as the WordPress administrator password.
WordPress’s installation handbook describes the same core tasks: create the database and user, upload the files, optionally create wp-config.php, then open the installation URL. The panel changes how you perform those tasks, not what WordPress ultimately needs.
Enable HTTPS, permalinks, and routine operations
Issue certificates after DNS works
Use the panel’s current Let’s Encrypt or other certificate workflow after the domain resolves to the VPS. Request certificates for every hostname the site will serve, commonly the bare domain and www. Force HTTPS only after the certificate is valid, then test the home page, login page, media URLs, REST API, and any redirect rules.

Set permalinks and confirm rewrites
In WordPress, open Settings > Permalinks, choose the desired structure, and save it. If posts return 404 errors while the home page works, the panel’s virtual-host rewrite configuration may be missing or the selected Apache, Nginx, or OpenLiteSpeed template may not match WordPress. Apply the panel’s WordPress rewrite template instead of editing random server files.

Check ownership, uploads, and updates
Upload a test image, update a plugin in a staging or maintenance window, and confirm that WordPress can write to its uploads directory without making the entire document root world-writable. If uploads or updates fail, inspect the file owner and group assigned by the panel, directory permissions, disk space, and any security policy that blocks the PHP process. WordPress’s server-configuration guidance explains the permission model; use the panel’s user and PHP-FPM settings rather than granting broad write access.
Plan backups and scheduled tasks
Configure a backup destination outside the VPS. A local archive does not protect against a failed disk or deleted server. Include the database, wp-content, configuration files, and a record of DNS and panel settings. Test restoring a database and a file set before trusting the schedule. Check whether the panel uses cron or WordPress’s traffic-triggered scheduler, and monitor jobs that send email or perform heavy backups.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The installer refuses to run
- Restore the snapshot and verify that the image is fresh.
- Confirm you are root, not an unprivileged sudo session that lost its environment.
- Check the exact Ubuntu release and architecture against the current panel requirements.
- Remove the preinstalled LAMP/LEMP image and start with a plain Ubuntu image rather than trying to disable services one by one.
- Read the installer log for repository, DNS, disk-space, or unsupported-kernel errors before retrying.
The panel opens, but the WordPress site does not
- Check the domain’s A and AAAA records and wait for stale DNS caches to expire.
- Verify both the VPS provider firewall and the panel’s firewall permit ports 80 and 443.
- Confirm that the domain is assigned to the intended virtual host and document root.
- Check whether the web server is running and whether the PHP-FPM pool for this site is healthy.
- Review the certificate status and remove redirect loops caused by conflicting HTTPS rules.
WordPress reports a missing MySQL extension
The selected PHP runtime may not have its MySQL/MariaDB extension installed or enabled. In the panel, inspect the site’s PHP version and extension list, install the matching database extension, restart the relevant PHP-FPM service, and rerun the installer. Also confirm that the database server itself is running and that the credentials in wp-config.php match the panel’s database account.

Uploads, plugin updates, or cron jobs fail
Check disk usage first, then inspect ownership and permissions on wp-content. A PHP version mismatch, disabled extension, restrictive open-basedir setting, or incorrect PHP-FPM user can produce the same symptom. For scheduled tasks, verify the system cron entry, the WordPress site URL, and the command’s PHP binary rather than assuming the panel’s default PHP is the one assigned to the site.

Installer minima are not performance guarantees. Measure CPU steal time, RAM pressure, swap activity, database memory, PHP worker counts, disk latency, backup jobs, and mail scanning. Hestia’s fuller-stack recommendation of 4 cores, 4 GB RAM, and a 40-GB SSD illustrates the difference between “can install” and “can operate comfortably.” Increase resources or remove unused services before adding more caching layers.
WordPress compatibility checklist
- Ubuntu LTS release is listed by the chosen panel.
- Panel and VPS architecture are compatible.
- Fresh operating-system image with no existing hosting stack.
- Root-capable SSH access and a tested recovery path.
- Resolvable fully qualified hostname.
- PHP 8.3 or newer available for the site.
- MariaDB 10.11 or newer, or MySQL 8.0 or newer.
- Apache or Nginx selected when you want WordPress’s most broadly supported server options; OpenLiteSpeed is an alternative when you specifically choose that stack.
- DNS records point to the VPS before certificate issuance.
- HTTPS works for the site and panel.
- Database credentials are unique and documented securely.
- Backups are stored off the VPS and restoration has been tested.
Which approach is right for your VPS?
Choose HestiaCP when you want a conventional hosting layout with Nginx/PHP-FPM options and are willing to allocate resources for its broad service set. Choose CyberPanel when OpenLiteSpeed and a panel-led WordPress workflow are the reason you are using a control panel; verify whether the free edition meets your performance and licensing needs. Choose aaPanel when a visual dashboard for sites, files, databases, certificates, monitoring, and backups is more important than a narrowly minimal installation. Choose ISPConfig when you administer multiple servers or need explicit Apache/nginx and hosting-role controls and are comfortable with a more operations-focused workflow.
Whichever panel you select, the reliable path is the same: fresh Ubuntu LTS, verified requirements, an official installer, a protected first login, supported PHP and database versions, correct DNS and TLS, a dedicated database account, and tested backups. That sequence prevents most installation failures and leaves WordPress on a stack you can update and recover.
