What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
PHP sessions fail in one of three places: the request does not start a session correctly, the browser does not return the session-ID cookie, or the server cannot read the session record. A fourth issue appears in production: different application nodes use different session stores or cookie settings. Trace one request through all of those layers instead of assuming that a populated $_SESSION array proves persistence.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start with session_set_cookie_params() (if you need custom attributes), call session_start() before reading or writing $_SESSION and before any output, then verify both the Set-Cookie response and the server-side record. The sequence below isolates each failure without masking it with stale cookies or permissive security settings.

Understand what has to work
A session is a link between a browser-held identifier and data held by PHP. The browser stores a cookie, normally named PHPSESSID. PHP uses that identifier to open a record through the configured session save handler. Either half can fail independently: a cookie can be present while its record has been deleted, or a record can exist while the browser never sends its identifier.
| Failure layer | Typical symptom | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Initialization and headers | session_start() warns, returns false, or values are unavailable after a redirect |
Call order, output before headers, session_status(), and the result of session_start() |
| Browser cookie | No PHPSESSID cookie, or it is not sent on the next request |
Set-Cookie, domain, path, Secure, and SameSite |
| Server storage | The cookie returns but the session is empty or a save-path warning appears | Effective save handler, save path, ownership, read/write permissions, and handler logs |
| Deployment topology | Login works on one request and disappears when traffic reaches another node | Identical settings on every node and shared or deliberately coordinated session storage |
| Lifetime and garbage collection | Sessions appear to expire at random | session.cookie_lifetime, session.gc_maxlifetime, and garbage-collection probability/divisor |
1. Start the session at the right point
Put session initialization at the beginning of every request path that uses session data. Read or write $_SESSION only after session_start() has succeeded. If you customize cookie attributes, set them first on every request; the PHP manual specifically requires session_set_cookie_params() to be called before session_start().

<?php
// Run before any HTML, whitespace, logging to the response, or other output.
session_set_cookie_params([
'lifetime' => 0,
'path' => '/',
'secure' => true,
'httponly' => true,
'samesite' => 'Lax',
]);
if (session_start() === false) {
throw new RuntimeException('Session could not be started');
}
$_SESSION['last_page'] = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ?? '/';
Do not copy the secure value in that example to a plain-HTTP test site. A cookie marked Secure is restricted to secure connections. Use HTTPS for a production example; for a temporary HTTP-only diagnostic, remove that attribute deliberately and restore it when testing is complete.
Output includes more than visible HTML. A byte-order mark, a closing PHP tag followed by whitespace, an accidental debugging print, or an error displayed before the session starts can prevent headers from being sent. The browser then receives no usable Set-Cookie header even though the PHP code appears to run. Keep initialization in a bootstrap file and avoid a closing PHP tag in files that contain only PHP.

Use a two-request test, not a one-request snapshot
Logging $_SESSION in one request is insufficient: the array can be populated in memory and still fail to persist. Record the status, identifier, and return value while testing, then request a second URL with the same browser.
<?php
error_log('before: status=' . session_status() . ' id=' . session_id());
$result = session_start();
error_log('start result=' . var_export($result, true) .
' status=' . session_status() . ' id=' . session_id());
$_SESSION['probe'] = ($_SESSION['probe'] ?? 0) + 1;
error_log('probe=' . $_SESSION['probe']);
The second request should report the same session identifier and an incremented probe value. A warning or an empty value narrows the problem, but do not suppress that warning; send it to the PHP-FPM or web-server error log so the failing layer remains visible.
2. Inspect the cookie exchange in both directions
Open the browser’s developer tools, select the request that starts the session, and inspect its response headers. You should see a Set-Cookie header containing your configured session name, normally PHPSESSID. Inspect the immediately following request and confirm that a Cookie request header sends that same name and value back.

SecureandSameSite. - Cookie returns but data is empty: move to server-side storage and topology checks; the browser layer is then functioning.
Cookie path and domain
The path limits which URLs receive the cookie. A cookie scoped to /admin will not be sent to /shop. For an application that spans several paths, use the narrowest common path, commonly /. The domain must match the host that serves the request. Switching between an apex host, a subdomain, and an alias can make a previously valid cookie invisible to the new host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect cookies after redirects as well as before them. An HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, reverse proxy, or host canonicalization rule can change the URL that determines whether a cookie is eligible. Make the public host, path, and protocol consistent from the first response through the final application request.
Secure and HTTPS
PHP documents session.cookie_secure as the setting that restricts cookies to secure connections. If it is enabled while you test over plain HTTP, the browser may store the cookie but will not send it over that connection. Test the complete flow over HTTPS, including redirects and proxy termination, rather than weakening a production setting.
SameSite and cross-site requests
For same-site navigation, Lax is often compatible and Strict is more restrictive. PHP’s documentation notes that Lax and Strict do not send the cookie on cross-domain POST requests. If the application intentionally depends on a cross-site POST, the session-security RFC describes the required combination as SameSite=None; Secure. Use that only for the flow that needs it; broadening cross-site delivery increases exposure.
Do not diagnose SameSite from the response alone. Reproduce the actual navigation or form POST, then inspect whether the browser attached the cookie to that request. A same-origin test can pass while an external login or payment return fails.

3. Verify the server-side session record
With PHP’s default files save handler, each session is represented by a file under session.save_path. The PHP worker that serves web requests must be able to create, read, and update files there. Check the effective value from that same runtime; a command-line PHP installation can use a different configuration from PHP-FPM or Apache.
<?php
header('Content-Type: text/plain');
echo 'SAPI: ' . PHP_SAPI . "n";
echo 'save_handler: ' . ini_get('session.save_handler') . "n";
echo 'save_path: ' . ini_get('session.save_path') . "n";
echo 'cookie_name: ' . ini_get('session.name') . "n";
echo 'cookie_lifetime: ' . ini_get('session.cookie_lifetime') . "n";
echo 'gc_maxlifetime: ' . ini_get('session.gc_maxlifetime') . "n";
Run this only in a protected diagnostic endpoint and remove it afterward. It exposes configuration that should not be public. Compare the reported SAPI and path with the process that actually handles the failing request.
Directory existence, ownership, and permissions
- Confirm that the configured directory exists and is mounted in the web-server environment.
- Identify the operating-system user used by PHP-FPM or Apache.
- Give that user the minimum permission needed to create and read session files.
- Check free space, read-only mounts, and mandatory-access-control denials in the service logs if writes still fail.
A successful directory listing from your shell account does not prove that the PHP worker can write there. Test as the service account through normal application traffic and inspect the PHP error log for save-path warnings.
Do not use an unsafe shared directory
The PHP manual warns that a world-readable session directory, including a default such as /tmp, can allow other users on the server to list session files and hijack sessions. Correct ownership and restrictive permissions are part of the fix, not an optional hardening step. If a shared directory is required, isolate it for the application and prevent unrelated accounts from reading its contents.
Custom save handlers
If session.save_handler is not files, stop looking for local session files. Verify the configured handler’s connection, namespace, credentials, availability, and error logs. A database, key-value service, or other handler can be reachable from one PHP pool and unavailable from another, so test through the same worker and host that processes the request.

4. Check every node in a load-balanced deployment
Local file sessions work on a single node because every request sees the same directory. With multiple application nodes, a request that creates a session on node A can be followed by a request on node B, where that file does not exist. The result looks like a random logout or a session that disappears after a redirect.
On each node, record and compare:
session.save_handlerandsession.save_path- session name and every cookie attribute
- PHP version and the runtime configuration loaded by the web worker
- clock and filesystem availability relevant to the chosen handler
Use a shared session store that every node can reach, or use a deliberate state-sharing or affinity strategy that guarantees subsequent requests reach a node with the record. Affinity alone is not a substitute for checking failure recovery: a node restart or routing change can still move a user elsewhere. The important requirement is that all valid requests can resolve the session identifier to the same logical data.
Reverse proxies add another source of inconsistency. Confirm that the public host and protocol used to construct cookie attributes are the same on every node, and that an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect does not create competing cookies with different paths, domains, or names.

Two independent timers control apparent expiry. session.cookie_lifetime controls how long the browser keeps the cookie. PHP’s default is 0, meaning the cookie lasts until the browser closes. session.gc_maxlifetime controls how long session data is eligible to remain before garbage collection; PHP’s documented default is 1440 seconds. Garbage collection also depends on its configured probability and divisor, so deletion is not necessarily performed at the exact second the maximum age is reached.
| Observation | Likely relationship | Test |
|---|---|---|
| Cookie vanishes when the browser closes | Cookie lifetime is zero or otherwise short | Inspect the cookie’s expiry and compare it with session.cookie_lifetime |
| Cookie remains but a new session starts | Server-side record was removed or is unavailable | Check save-path access, handler logs, node routing, and gc_maxlifetime |
| Session survives longer than expected on one node | Garbage collection has not run yet, or nodes use different settings | Compare garbage-collection settings and runtime configuration on every node |
When changing cookie settings, record the existing name, domain, path, and expiry first. Clear old cookies only after that record is made. Otherwise a stale cookie can make a correct configuration change appear ineffective, or an old cookie with a narrower path can continue to win for some URLs.

6. Apply secure settings after functionality is proven
Once the two-request test works, harden the session rather than leaving diagnostic settings in place. For an HTTPS-only application, enable session.cookie_secure=On. Enable session.cookie_httponly=On so client-side scripts cannot read the session cookie. Choose session.cookie_samesite=Lax or Strict when the application’s navigation supports it, and use the narrower policy that still permits required sign-in or integration flows.
Enable session.use_strict_mode=On. PHP’s security guidance recommends strict mode, and the session-security RFC explains that it prevents PHP from accepting an arbitrary well-formed identifier that has not been initialized in storage. Strict mode does not repair a missing save path or an incorrectly scoped cookie; it makes the successful design safer after those mechanics are correct.
; Example production baseline for an HTTPS application
session.cookie_secure = On
session.cookie_httponly = On
session.cookie_samesite = Lax
session.use_strict_mode = On
Apply equivalent settings through the configuration mechanism used by the web SAPI, then restart or reload the relevant PHP service if that mechanism requires it. Verify the effective values with the protected diagnostic endpoint; changing a CLI configuration file alone may not change the workers handling web requests.
A repeatable end-to-end diagnostic
Use two tiny endpoints on a non-public test route. The first starts a session, increments a counter, and prints the identifier. The second starts the session and prints the counter. Keep the code free of output before initialization.
<?php
// write-session.php
session_start();
$_SESSION['counter'] = ($_SESSION['counter'] ?? 0) + 1;
header('Content-Type: text/plain');
echo 'id=' . session_id() . "n";
echo 'counter=' . $_SESSION['counter'] . "n";
<?php
// read-session.php
session_start();
header('Content-Type: text/plain');
echo 'id=' . session_id() . "n";
echo 'counter=' . var_export($_SESSION['counter'] ?? null, true) . "n";
- Request
write-session.phpin a fresh private browser window. - Capture the response’s
Set-Cookieheader and note its name, path, domain,Secure,SameSite, and expiry. - Request
read-session.phpin the same window and confirm that the request sends the cookie, the identifier is unchanged, and the counter is present. - Repeat through the real redirect, subdomain, external POST, or load balancer path that fails in production.
- If the cookie is absent, stay in the browser/header section. If it returns but the counter is null, inspect storage and node routing. If the identifier changes, inspect cookie scope, strict mode, and whether a different node or handler is receiving the request.
Remove these endpoints after testing. A diagnostic route that prints identifiers or runtime paths is sensitive even when it contains no application data.
Symptom-to-fix checklist
session_start() appears to do nothing
- Check whether it is called after output or after code already reads
$_SESSION. - Log its return value,
session_status(), andsession_id(). - Review PHP error logs instead of hiding warnings.
- If cookie parameters are customized, move
session_set_cookie_params()beforesession_start()on every request.
PHPSESSID is not set
- Inspect the actual response, not a cached page or a different redirect response.
- Remove premature output and verify that the request reaches the PHP code.
- Check whether a secure cookie is being tested over plain HTTP.
The cookie is set but not returned
- Compare URL, cookie domain, and cookie path.
- Check
Secureagainst the current protocol. - For cross-domain POST, evaluate
SameSiteand the need forNone; Secure. - Look for duplicate cookies with the same name but different paths or domains.
Values disappear after a redirect
- Inspect the cookie on the redirect response and on the destination request.
- Check whether the redirect changes host, protocol, or path.
- On a cluster, identify the node serving each request and compare its handler and save path.
PHP reports a save-path permission problem
- Read
session.save_pathfrom the web SAPI. - Confirm the directory exists and is writable and readable by the PHP worker account.
- Check mounts, disk space, and service logs.
- Use a private application-owned directory rather than a world-readable temporary directory.
Sessions expire without a clear pattern
- Compare browser cookie lifetime with server garbage-collection lifetime.
- Compare garbage-collection probability/divisor and all runtime values across nodes.
- Check whether a stale cookie remains after a configuration change.
What a successful fix looks like
A working session has evidence at every boundary: initialization succeeds before output; the response sets one correctly scoped cookie; the next request returns that cookie; the configured save handler can read the corresponding record; and every node that may receive the request uses the same logical store and compatible cookie settings. Only after those checks pass should you tune lifetime or enable the security baseline.
