To install an SSL/TLS certificate on Apache, place a PEM-encoded certificate and its matching private key on the server, enable Apache’s SSL module, then configure an HTTPS virtual host on port 443 with SSLEngine on, SSLCertificateFile, and SSLCertificateKeyFile. Test the configuration and reload Apache; the server reads certificate files when it starts or reloads.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
You can install and renew a certificate manually, or use Certbot’s Apache plugin to obtain and deploy one and then automate renewals. The right choice depends on whether you need control over the certificate authority and files, or less recurring operational work.

HTTPS is not enabled by uploading a .crt file alone. Apache must be able to accept encrypted connections, locate a certificate whose name covers the requested host, and read the corresponding private key.
- A resolvable hostname: The domain must resolve to the server running Apache, and Apache must already be serving the site.
- TCP port 443: The host firewall, cloud firewall, load balancer, and any network security group in front of Apache must allow HTTPS traffic.
- Apache SSL support: Install or enable the distribution’s
mod_sslpackage or module. - A certificate and matching private key: Both should be PEM encoded. The certificate must cover the site’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
- Permission to reload Apache: Reading a private key normally requires root-level access, even when the web files themselves are owned by another account.
Check DNS and connectivity before troubleshooting Apache. If the name points somewhere else, a correctly configured virtual host on this server will not receive the browser request.

Choose manual installation or Certbot
There are two practical approaches. Manual installation gives you direct control over where the key and certificate live, which certificate authority issues them, and exactly how Apache is configured. Certbot’s Apache plugin is designed to fetch a certificate and deploy it to the web server, while the certbot renew action is intended for repeated renewal.
| Consideration | Manual installation | Certbot with the Apache plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate source | You create a key and CSR and choose the certificate authority. | Certbot obtains a certificate through its configured certificate authority and challenge process. |
| Apache configuration | You edit the HTTPS virtual host and file paths yourself. | The Apache plugin can install the obtained certificate and adjust Apache configuration. |
| Renewal | You must monitor expiry, replace files, and reload Apache on each renewal. | certbot renew checks certificates previously obtained by Certbot that are ready for renewal. |
| Testing renewal | You must test your own replacement procedure. | certbot renew --dry-run tests the renewal flow without saving live certificates. |
| Operational control | Highest control over key storage, chain files, and deployment timing. | Less repetitive work, but you must verify the scheduled task, challenge access, and post-renewal reload. |
| Access and network constraints | Depends on how you obtain the certificate and deliver files. | Depends on the challenge method, available ports, DNS, and the permissions required by the plugin. |
Certbot documentation says most installations have automated renewal configured, but an administrator should still confirm that a scheduled task exists and that a dry run succeeds. Automation is not a substitute for checking expiry and deployment.
Generate a private key and CSR for a manual certificate
Create the key on the Apache host
Generate the private key on the server whenever possible so it does not have to cross an email account, ticketing system, or workstation. Store it outside the public document root. A typical layout is a certificate directory such as /etc/ssl/certs/ and a private directory such as /etc/ssl/private/; your operating system may use different paths.
The private key is the secret that proves the server owns the certificate. Do not paste it into a support ticket, commit it to source control, place it in a web-accessible directory, or include it in routine backups without protecting those backups.
Create a certificate signing request
Create a CSR from the private key and identify the site’s FQDN in the request. Submit the CSR to your chosen certificate authority, complete any validation it requires, and save the signed certificate returned by the authority. Keep the original private key; the certificate authority does not need it and cannot recreate it for you.
If the authority supplies intermediate certificates, retain those files as well. Apache presents the leaf certificate followed by the intermediate certificates so clients can build a trusted chain.

Use your operating system’s package manager or Apache module tooling to install and enable mod_ssl. Package names and enablement commands differ between distributions, so follow the method used by your platform. On some systems the module is enabled automatically when the SSL package is installed; on others you must enable it explicitly in Apache’s module configuration.

After enabling the module, confirm Apache can bind to port 443. If another process already owns that port, Apache cannot accept HTTPS connections until the conflict is resolved. A firewall rule allowing 443 is also required; opening the port in Apache’s configuration does not change host or cloud firewall rules.
Build the HTTPS virtual host
Create or edit the virtual-host configuration for the site. The minimum Apache SSL configuration contains the following directives inside a <VirtualHost *:443> block:
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
SSLEngine on
SSLCertificateFile /etc/ssl/certs/example.com-fullchain.pem
SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/ssl/private/example.com.key
<Directory /var/www/example>
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
Replace every example value with your own hostname and paths. ServerName must identify the host users request. The certificate file must contain the certificate for that host, and the key file must be the private key used to create the CSR.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlace the certificate and key safely
- Keep the certificate and chain in a directory Apache can read.
- Keep the private key outside the document root and make it owned by root and readable only by root, as recommended by Apache’s
mod_sslreference. - Do not make the key world-readable merely to work around a permission error. Fix ownership, group membership, or the service’s startup permissions instead.
- Use a stable filename or deployment path so renewals can replace the file without requiring broad configuration edits.
Apache reads these files when it starts or reloads. Replacing a file on disk does not update already-running worker processes until Apache is reloaded or restarted.
Include the intermediate chain
For Apache 2.4.8 and later, intermediate certificates can be loaded from the file specified by SSLCertificateFile. Put the leaf certificate first and append the intermediate certificate or certificates in the order supplied by the certificate authority. Do not put the private key in this file.
The older SSLCertificateChainFile directive is obsolete for Apache versions that support loading intermediates from SSLCertificateFile. If you operate an older Apache release, follow that release’s documentation rather than blindly copying a current configuration.
Account for a separate HTTP virtual host
Many sites keep a port-80 virtual host to redirect ordinary HTTP requests to HTTPS. That redirect is separate from installing the certificate: the TLS virtual host on port 443 must work first. Test HTTPS directly before adding a redirect so a configuration mistake does not hide the underlying failure.

Test and activate the configuration
- Run Apache’s configuration test. Use the configuration-test command supplied by your platform, commonly an Apache control utility with a
configtestor equivalent option. Correct every syntax error before reloading. - Check the effective virtual hosts. Confirm the HTTPS file is included, the expected
ServerNameis present, and no competing virtual host is taking the request. - Reload or restart Apache. A graceful reload is normally preferable when your platform supports it because existing connections can finish, but use the service action appropriate to your system.
- Request the site over HTTPS. Use the exact hostname covered by the certificate, not an unrelated IP address or alias.
- Inspect the result from outside the server. Verify the hostname, validity dates, presented chain, and that the certificate corresponds to the installed private key.
Common service names differ by distribution: one system may call the service apache2, another httpd. Do not assume a command from one operating system applies unchanged to another. If the reload fails, Apache usually leaves the previous working configuration active; read the service and Apache error logs before making further changes.
Verify that the certificate and key match
A frequent installation error is pairing a certificate with the wrong key. The server may start, but Apache will reject the pair or TLS handshakes will fail. Compare the public key information derived from the certificate with the public key derived from the private key using a cryptographic utility available on your system. The exact command varies with the key type and operating system.
Also check the certificate itself from an external client:
- The requested hostname appears in the certificate’s identity fields.
- The current date falls between the certificate’s “not before” and “not after” dates.
- The server presents the leaf certificate and required intermediate certificates.
- The external client trusts the issuing chain.
- The certificate being served is the newly installed one, rather than a stale certificate from another virtual host or proxy.
Testing from outside the Apache host matters because a local test can bypass DNS, a reverse proxy, a load balancer, or a firewall that changes what internet users actually receive.

Certbot provides an alternative to collecting a certificate file manually. Its Apache plugin can obtain a certificate and install it in Apache, reducing the number of file and directive changes you have to perform yourself.
Prepare for the plugin
- Make sure DNS points the hostname to the machine where the plugin will answer the validation challenge.
- Ensure Apache is installed and serving the intended site.
- Install Certbot and its Apache integration using the package source supported by your operating system.
- Have sufficient privileges to read Apache’s configuration and reload the service.
- Confirm that firewalls, proxies, and redirects will not block the selected challenge method.
The plugin’s exact command-line syntax and package names vary by distribution. Follow the command supplied by that package, select the intended Apache virtual host, and verify the resulting configuration rather than assuming every host has the same layout.
Check renewal before depending on it
Run certbot renew as a recurring task. Certbot examines certificates it previously obtained and renews those that are ready. Running the command when no certificate is due is expected and should not issue an unnecessary replacement.

Before relying on unattended renewal, run:
certbot renew --dry-run
The dry run exercises the renewal process without saving live certificates. Treat a failed dry run as an operational problem: investigate DNS, challenge reachability, permissions, certificate paths, and Apache reload behavior before the real certificate approaches expiry.
Most Certbot installations include an automated scheduled task, but verify it on the actual server. Check the system’s timer or scheduled job, confirm it runs under an account with the required privileges, and make sure renewal output and failures are visible to whoever maintains the site.
Renew a manually installed certificate
Manual certificates require a repeatable replacement procedure. Before the current certificate expires:
- Generate or obtain the replacement certificate using the same hostname and an appropriate CSR.
- Save the replacement leaf certificate and any intermediate certificates in a controlled location.
- Build the file referenced by
SSLCertificateFile, with the leaf first and intermediates following it when using Apache 2.4.8 or later. - Preserve the private key if the renewal uses the same key, or install the new key and update
SSLCertificateKeyFileif you generated a new one. - Apply root-only ownership and restrictive permissions to the key.
- Run Apache’s configuration test.
- Reload Apache and verify the newly served certificate from an external client.
Schedule enough lead time for validation delays and rollback. Keep the previous working certificate and key in a protected, non-public location until the replacement has been verified, but do not leave obsolete private keys broadly accessible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the most common failures
Apache reports that it cannot read the key
Check the key path, ownership, and mode. The key should be owned by root and readable only by root where the platform’s Apache startup model permits that. A path under a directory with restrictive traversal permissions can fail even when the file’s mode appears correct. Do not solve this by making the private key publicly readable.

“Private key does not match certificate”
You installed a certificate generated from a different key. Locate the key used for the CSR, compare its public key with the certificate, and update the virtual host so both directives refer to the matching pair. If the original key is lost, the certificate cannot be used; generate a new key and CSR and request a replacement certificate.
The browser says the certificate is for another site
Confirm the browser uses the exact hostname in ServerName and that the certificate covers it. Then inspect Apache’s enabled virtual hosts and DNS. A default SSL virtual host, reverse proxy, or load balancer may be presenting a different certificate before the request reaches the intended site.

The chain is incomplete or untrusted
Rebuild the certificate file with the leaf certificate first and the intermediate certificates supplied by the certificate authority after it. Ensure you did not omit an intermediate or concatenate files in the wrong order. On Apache 2.4.8 and later, place the chain in SSLCertificateFile; do not rely on the obsolete chain-file arrangement without checking the version.
Port 443 is unreachable
Confirm Apache is listening on 443, then check host, cloud, router, and load-balancer firewall rules. A valid certificate cannot help if the TCP connection never reaches Apache. If a proxy terminates TLS, install and verify the certificate on the component that actually accepts the client’s HTTPS connection.
Apache will not reload after renewal
Run the configuration test before retrying the reload. Look for a truncated certificate, a misplaced intermediate, an incorrect path, a changed private-key permission, or a syntax error introduced while editing the virtual host. Keep the last known-good files available so you can restore service while correcting the replacement.
Certbot renewal fails
Run certbot renew --dry-run and read the complete error. Check that DNS still points to the renewal host, the challenge can reach the server through the required port, the scheduled task still exists, and Certbot can reload Apache after installing the replacement. A certificate can be valid today while its future renewal path is broken.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a certificate whose identity covers every hostname the site actually serves.
- Keep private keys outside web roots, tickets, shell history, and unprotected backups.
- Restrict key ownership and permissions; Apache’s reference recommends root ownership and root-only readability.
- Present the certificate chain in the required leaf-then-intermediate order.
- Test Apache’s configuration before every reload or renewal.
- Verify the served certificate externally after installation and renewal.
- Monitor expiration rather than waiting for browsers to report an outage.
- For Certbot, verify the scheduled renewal task and run a dry run before the first production renewal.
- Document which virtual host, certificate path, key path, and renewal method belong to each hostname.
Which approach should you use?
Choose manual installation when your organization requires a particular commercial or internal certificate authority, has a controlled key-generation and deployment process, or needs exact control over Apache files and reload timing. It is predictable, but someone must own expiry monitoring and replacement.
Choose Certbot’s Apache plugin when the certificate authority and challenge workflow fit your environment and you want issuance and deployment handled together. Keep responsibility for DNS, firewall access, scheduled-task verification, dry-run testing, and alerting; automation only helps when those dependencies remain healthy.
