You can install compatible Xbox One games on Xbox Series X from your digital library or from a game disc. If you mean choosing the older Xbox One build of a Smart Delivery game that also has an Xbox Series X|S version, Xbox’s documented process does not offer a manual version selector: the console automatically provides the version intended for that console.
First, identify which version you mean
An Xbox One game that is supported through backward compatibility can be installed and played on Series X. Microsoft says Series X is compatible with thousands of games across four generations of Xbox; the compatibility guidance applies to supported titles, not every Xbox One release without exception. A different case is a cross-generation game that uses Smart Delivery. Xbox says the console recognizes which device you are using and automatically supplies the best available version for it; you do not need to choose a version to download. Xbox Wire’s Smart Delivery explanation does not document a supported way to override this and force the Xbox One build on Series X.
Install a digital Xbox One game
- Sign in to the Xbox account that owns the game.
- Open My games & apps, then go to Ready to Install.
- Select the compatible title and start the installation.

If the game does not appear or install
- For a digital copy, check that you are signed in to the account that owns it.
- For a disc copy, verify that you have inserted the game disc and that the title is supported in the backward-compatible catalog.
- If you are trying to force an Xbox One build of a Smart Delivery game, the published Smart Delivery process does not provide a manual override.
Need more storage?
Series X supports standalone hard drives and USB 3.1 external HDDs, as well as Microsoft’s Storage Expansion Card, which is designed to match internal SSD performance.
