Use one Linux VPS as the Ansible control node, install either the full ansible package or the minimal ansible-core runtime, then manage other VPS machines over SSH from an inventory. The managed VPS normally needs no Ansible installation: it needs a reachable SSH account, an interactive POSIX shell and Python for most modules.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Ansible’s Linux VPS architecture
Ansible is agentless automation. The control node is the machine where the Ansible command, inventory and playbooks live. It connects to managed nodes, runs modules remotely and returns the results. A VPS can be either role: a small administration VPS may control several application servers, while a separate VPS can be both a control node and a managed node in a single-server setup.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe control node needs a supported Python runtime, Ansible installed on its PATH, and network access to the targets. Each managed VPS needs an SSH-capable account with an interactive POSIX shell. Most managed-node modules also require Python on the target. The target does not generally need the Ansible package itself.
When one VPS is enough
One VPS is sufficient for learning, a personal project or a small deployment. Install Ansible there and use its public or private network path to reach the machines it manages. For production, separating the control node from application servers can reduce the chance that a compromised workload also controls your automation environment.

Network and account prerequisites
- The control node must resolve or reach each target’s DNS name or IP address.
- TCP access to the SSH service must be allowed by cloud firewalls, host firewalls and network ACLs.
- Every target needs a dedicated automation account or another explicitly approved SSH account.
- The account must have only the privilege escalation required by your playbooks.
- Python must be available on targets for the modules you plan to use; the Ansible ping test is a useful first check, not a complete application validation.
Choose an Ansible installation method
The current installation guidance documents two package families. The ansible package is the larger community bundle and is convenient when you want commonly used collections included. ansible-core is the smaller runtime; you select and install collections separately. Neither choice changes the control-node and managed-node model.
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
ansible |
Projects that benefit from a broad set of bundled community collections | Larger installation and less minimal dependency surface |
ansible-core |
Projects that want a minimal runtime and explicit collection selection | You must manage the collections your playbooks require |
| Distribution package manager | Systems where the repository version is acceptable and OS integration matters | Version and update cadence follow the distribution |
pipx |
An isolated Python application environment with a command available globally | Adds a separate Python application-management workflow |
pip |
Environments where direct Python package installation is already standardized | Requires careful management of the Python environment and upgrades |
Record the selected package family, installation method and version in the project documentation. That makes upgrades deliberate instead of allowing a control node to drift silently.

Use the distribution package manager when its Ansible version fits your project’s compatibility requirements. Package names and repository availability vary by distribution, so use the package-management instructions for the specific Linux release. On an already configured Debian- or Ubuntu-family system, the command commonly takes this form:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ansible
On a Fedora-, RHEL- or compatible system, the equivalent is typically:
sudo dnf install ansible
These commands install the distribution’s packaged build. Check the repository version before committing to it; do not assume that the newest upstream release is available through the OS repository.
Install an isolated application with pipx
pipx keeps Ansible in its own Python environment while exposing the executable on your user PATH. After installing and initializing pipx for your distribution, install the package family you selected:

python3 -m pip install --user ansible
# or
python3 -m pip install --user ansible-core
Make sure the user-local binary directory is on PATH. In a project-specific virtual environment, activate that environment before installing and before running Ansible. The installation guide’s support matrix should be checked before pinning a Python or Ansible version; the output of ansible --version is an environment check, not a universal compatibility guarantee.
Confirm the installation
Run these checks on the control node:
command -v ansible
ansible --version
The first command shows which executable will run. The second reports the Ansible version, Python interpreter, executable location and configuration search information. Save that output with the project’s setup notes when you troubleshoot or plan an upgrade.
Prepare SSH access safely
Ansible uses native OpenSSH by default when it is available. This supports connection reuse through ControlPersist, Kerberos and options in ~/.ssh/config, including jump-host definitions.
Create an automation account
- Create a dedicated account on every managed VPS, such as
automation, instead of sharing a personal administrator login. - Grant the account the minimum permissions required for the playbooks.
- Configure privilege escalation only for tasks that need it. In playbooks this is normally expressed with
become: true. - Install the control node’s public key in the account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keysfile with correct ownership and restrictive permissions.
How you create the account and authorize the key depends on the VPS operating system and provider. Perform that bootstrap through the provider console, an existing administrative account or your organization’s approved provisioning process.
Use an encrypted private key
For an encrypted key, load it into an SSH agent before running Ansible:
eval "$(ssh-agent -s)"
ssh-add ~/.ssh/ansible_ed25519
An agent lets OpenSSH unlock the key when needed without putting the passphrase in a playbook or command history. If an agent is not appropriate, select the key explicitly for a run:
ansible -i inventory.ini vps -m ping --private-key ~/.ssh/ansible_ed25519
You can also declare the key for a host with ansible_ssh_private_key_file in the inventory. Use one approach consistently and protect private-key files with filesystem permissions appropriate to their sensitivity.
Use SSH configuration for complex paths
Put stable connection details in ~/.ssh/config when a target requires a nonstandard port, a bastion or a jump host. Ansible’s native OpenSSH connection reads those options, so the inventory can use the SSH alias rather than duplicating transport details in every host entry.

Keep host-key checking enabled
Ansible enables host-key checking by default. The check compares the server key with the control node’s known hosts and helps expose spoofing and man-in-the-middle conditions. Treat a host-key warning as a security event to investigate, not merely as an obstacle to remove.
Recover after a legitimate VPS rebuild
- Confirm through your provider console or change record that the VPS was rebuilt or that its SSH host key was intentionally replaced.
- Verify that the address now points to the expected machine.
- Remove or replace only the stale entry in the control node’s
known_hostsfile. - Connect again and accept the newly verified key.
- Re-run the Ansible connectivity test.
Do not disable checking simply because a rebuilt server produces an error. The configuration option host_key_checking = False exists, but turning it off removes that protection and creates an ongoing maintenance and security trade-off. If an exception is unavoidable, document its scope, reason and removal date rather than applying it globally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Create an inventory for your VPS hosts
An inventory describes the hosts and groups that playbooks target. Keep it on the control node in the same version-controlled project as the playbooks, while protecting any sensitive connection data.
A minimal INI inventory
[vps]
app1 ansible_host=203.0.113.10 ansible_user=automation ansible_ssh_private_key_file=~/.ssh/ansible_ed25519
ansible_host is the address Ansible connects to. ansible_user selects the remote account. ansible_ssh_private_key_file selects a private key when you are not relying on an SSH agent. Replace the example address and key path with values from your environment.
A DNS name is preferable when it is the stable endpoint for the VPS:
[web]
web01 ansible_host=web01.example.net ansible_user=automation
[db]
db01 ansible_host=db01.example.net ansible_user=automation
Grouping by role lets a playbook express intent, such as targeting web or db, instead of embedding individual addresses throughout the automation.
Choose between inventory variables and play variables
Use ansible_user when the account is a host or group property. A play can use remote_user when the connection identity belongs specifically to that play. Avoid defining the same setting in several places without documenting precedence; conflicting values make failures difficult to diagnose.
Test connectivity before changing anything
Run the ad hoc ping module against the inventory group:

ansible -i inventory.ini vps -m ping
A successful response confirms that Ansible parsed the inventory, reached the address, authenticated through SSH, selected the intended remote account and executed the module well enough for that test. It does not prove that every later module, privilege-escalation rule, Python dependency or application service is correct.
Increase detail only when the test fails
Use verbose output to identify which layer failed:
ansible -i inventory.ini vps -m ping -vvv
- Inventory error: check the file path, group name and INI syntax.
- Name or route error: test DNS resolution and network reachability from the control node.
- Permission denied: verify
ansible_user, the public key inauthorized_keys, key permissions and whether the agent has the expected key loaded. - Host-key error: investigate the key change and repair the verified
known_hostsentry. - Python or module error: confirm that the target has a usable Python interpreter and that the account can execute it.
- Privilege escalation error: test the account’s approved
sudoor other escalation policy independently, then addbecomeonly where required.
Test ordinary SSH separately when useful:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/ansible_ed25519 [email protected]
If plain SSH fails, fix the transport or account problem before changing Ansible settings.
Add a project-level configuration
Keep ansible.cfg, the inventory and playbooks in a project directory under version control. Project configuration makes behavior reproducible and avoids hidden dependencies on a global /etc/ansible/ansible.cfg.
A small starting configuration
[defaults]
inventory = ./inventory.ini
retry_files_enabled = False
Add only settings the project needs. Configuration can also be supplied through environment variables, and Ansible applies a defined precedence order. Review that order before copying a global configuration into a project, especially when it changes connection, logging or security behavior.
Keep secrets out of plaintext YAML and out of a committed inventory. Use your organization’s approved secret-management approach and limit read access to the project directory, private keys and generated logs.

Write a first low-risk playbook
Start with an observable, reversible task. For example, gather facts and report the operating system before installing packages or changing services:
---
- name: Inspect managed VPS hosts
hosts: vps
gather_facts: true
tasks:
- name: Show the remote hostname
ansible.builtin.debug:
var: ansible_hostname
Run it with:
ansible-playbook -i inventory.ini inspect.yml
After the connection path is proven, add package updates, users, firewall rules and services in small, reviewable steps. Use become: true only on tasks that need elevated privileges. Test against a disposable VPS or a restorable snapshot before applying broad changes.
Separate transport checks from application checks
The ping module validates the Ansible transport and basic module execution. A production playbook should also verify the conditions its application requires: package availability, service state, listening ports, configuration syntax, filesystem capacity and any external dependencies. Those checks belong in the playbook or deployment pipeline, not in assumptions based on one successful ping.

Common connection failures and precise fixes
“Could not resolve hostname”
Check the spelling of ansible_host, DNS records and the control node’s resolver. If the address is intentionally private, confirm that the control VPS is on the network or tunnel that can reach it.
“Connection timed out” or “No route to host”
Verify the target is running, the SSH port is listening and provider-level and host-level firewalls allow the control node’s source address. A correct inventory cannot overcome a blocked route.
“Permission denied (publickey)”
Confirm the remote username, the authorized public key, private-key permissions and the active SSH agent:
ssh-add -l
If the expected key is absent, load it with ssh-add or pass --private-key. Check that the key belongs to the account named in the inventory.
“Host key verification failed”
Compare the presented fingerprint with a trusted record. If the VPS was rebuilt, remove the stale entry only after verifying that fact, then reconnect. Do not solve an unexplained key change by disabling host-key checking.
Recommended Free Tools
“Python interpreter not found”
Install or expose a supported Python interpreter on the managed VPS, then configure the interpreter selection required by that host. A successful SSH login alone does not guarantee that Ansible modules can run.
Privilege escalation prompts or failures
Check whether the automation account is permitted to escalate, whether a password is required and whether the playbook requests become only for the necessary tasks. Keep escalation policy explicit and least-privilege.
Operational checklist for a reliable control VPS
- Choose
ansibleoransible-coreintentionally and record the version. - Keep the control node’s Python and Ansible environment maintained and reproducible.
- Use a dedicated SSH account and an encrypted key where practical.
- Keep host-key checking enabled and investigate changed keys.
- Store inventory, configuration and playbooks in version control.
- Use groups such as
web,dbandmonitoringto target roles. - Run
ansible -m pingbefore the first change and after network or account changes. - Use
-vvvonly when diagnosing a failure, because verbose output can expose connection details in logs. - Keep secrets out of plaintext playbooks, inventories and shell history.
- Apply changes first to a disposable VPS or snapshot, then expand the target group deliberately.
What a successful setup proves—and what it does not
When the inventory ping succeeds, the control node can reach the selected address, authenticate as the configured user, pass host-key verification and execute the ping module on the target. That is the correct milestone for moving from connectivity work to playbook design.
It does not certify your full operating system baseline, sudo policy, application dependencies, firewall behavior or rollback process. Validate those requirements in staged playbooks, with explicit checks and a recovery plan appropriate to the services the VPS runs.
