Install ClearLag v3.2.2 by downloading its JAR from the maintained Spigot distribution (or the matching CurseForge project), placing it in your Bukkit- or Spigot-compatible server’s plugins folder, and restarting the server. The first startup creates plugins/Clearlag/config.yml. Back up that file, make conservative edits, then apply them with /lagg reload.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with observation commands such as /lagg check and /lagg tps. ClearLag can remove entities, so automatic cleanup should remain disabled or tightly scoped until you know which items, mobs and vehicles your worlds can safely lose.

ClearLag is a Bukkit/Spigot plugin intended to reduce lag by managing entities and monitoring server activity. Its documented features include culling selected entities, limiting mob spawners, limiting mob eggs and breeding, assigning per-item entity lifetimes, and sampling tick or memory behavior. Those controls change the game world: a dropped item, minecart or farm mob included in a cleanup list can disappear.
It is an optimization aid, not a replacement for finding the real cause of poor performance. View distance, simulation distance, entity-heavy farms, redstone activity, chunk layout and the underlying server software still determine how much work the server performs. Use ClearLag to control a known source of load, then profile and tune the server itself.

Check compatibility before downloading
The maintained Spigot listing identifies ClearLag v3.2.2 as a Bukkit/Spigot plugin. It lists native major version 1.13 and tested Minecraft major versions from 1.8 through 1.20.6. A server running outside that range may work, but the listing does not establish compatibility for it. Confirm your exact Minecraft version, server fork and build before installing.
The Bukkit project archive records February 9, 2021 as the last listed v3.2.2 release. The Spigot page is the maintained distribution page surfaced for the project, so use that listing or its matching CurseForge project rather than an arbitrary re-upload. The Bukkit page reported 19,299,638 total downloads when captured, a popularity figure rather than a guarantee of support for every current server version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Supported server family: Bukkit or Spigot-compatible software. Paper and other forks generally provide Bukkit/Spigot plugin compatibility, but verify the fork’s policy and test on a copy first.
- Supported versions shown by the listing: Minecraft 1.8–1.20.6, with 1.13 listed as the native major version.
- Required access: permission to stop or restart the server, upload a JAR, edit YAML and grant plugin permissions.
- Backup: make a world backup and retain a copy of the original configuration before enabling deletion features.
Install ClearLag step by step
- Stop the server safely. Use the server panel’s stop control or issue the normal shutdown command from the console. Installing while files are being written can leave an incomplete JAR or configuration.
- Download the plugin. On the maintained Spigot listing, download ClearLag v3.2.2, or obtain the matching project file from CurseForge. Keep the downloaded filename and do not open or repackage the JAR.
- Open the server root. This is the directory containing folders such as
world, logsandplugins. If the server is hosted remotely, use the provider’s file manager or SFTP account. - Copy the JAR to
plugins/. The final path should resemble<server-root>/plugins/ClearLag-3.2.2.jar. Do not put it inside a second nested folder. - Start or restart once. Watch the console for a successful ClearLag enable message. A normal first start creates the plugin directory and its default files.
- Confirm the generated files. Check that
plugins/Clearlag/config.ymlexists. The directory uses the project’s displayed casing, while commands use thelagglabel. - Make a backup before editing. Copy
config.ymlto a dated backup such asconfig.yml.backup-2026-10-14. Keep the untouched copy until the server has run normally for at least one maintenance cycle.
Find and edit plugins/Clearlag/config.yml
ClearLag stores its main settings in plugins/Clearlag/config.yml. YAML is indentation-sensitive: use spaces consistently, preserve the existing nesting and avoid tabs. A missing colon, a misplaced quote or an incorrectly indented child setting can stop the file from loading and produce an InvalidConfigurationException in the console.
Settings documented by the plugin
The example configuration documents these areas:
settings.languagecontrols the language file or message language.settings.auto-updatecontrols the plugin updater. Setauto-update: falseunder the plugin’s settings if you want updates handled manually.config-versionidentifies the configuration format.enable-apicontrols whether the plugin API is enabled for integrations.hopper-limitercontrols the hopper-limiting module.ram-metercontrols the memory-display module.halt-commanddefines the configured halt behavior used by the plugin.
The sample file also exposes module switches and cleanup settings. Treat every value as a policy decision for your server, not as a universal performance preset. Copying aggressive limits can remove legitimate builds, redstone components or farm animals.
A safe editing sequence
- Close the file in one editor; do not edit the live file simultaneously through multiple panels.
- Change one related group of settings at a time, keeping the original spacing and indentation.
- Save as plain text with the same
.ymlextension. Do not let an editor silently rename it to.yaml.txt. - Run a YAML-aware validation check if your editor provides one, but still read the server console because a syntactically valid file can contain an unsuitable gameplay policy.
- Apply the file with
/lagg reload. This command reloads the configuration and schedulers according to the maintained command list. - Run an observation command and watch the console for errors before enabling another module.
Understand module choices before changing them
ClearLag exposes more than one kind of control, and they have different gameplay effects. An entity-culling rule removes objects that already exist. A per-item lifetime removes dropped items after their configured lifetime. Mob-spawner, mob-egg and breeding limits prevent some entities from being created in the first place. Hopper limiting changes how a transport system operates, while the RAM meter only reports memory information. Keep these categories separate when planning a change so a performance experiment does not accidentally become a blanket deletion policy.
Use the smallest scope that can answer your question. If a world has an item buildup, inspect that world with /lagg check rather than immediately applying a global rule. If a farm is producing too many mobs, investigate its spawners, eggs or breeding behavior instead of shortening every item lifetime. Record the old value and the reason for each change in a simple change log; this makes rollback and later troubleshooting much faster.
Observe the server before enabling cleanup
Use ClearLag’s reporting commands to establish what is happening before deleting anything. These commands require the corresponding permissions, following the project’s lagg.<command-name> naming pattern.

| Command | Purpose | Operational note |
|---|---|---|
/lagg check [world1, world2...] |
Displays world and entity information. | Supply one or more world names when you want to isolate a dimension. |
/lagg tps |
Shows ClearLag’s estimated TPS. | The listing cautions that Spigot’s /tps is more accurate. |
/lagg performance |
Inspects runtime performance information. | Use alongside server-console timings or profiling rather than as a sole diagnosis. |
/lagg memory |
Inspects runtime memory usage. | A memory reading does not by itself identify an entity or redstone cause. |
/lagg profile <time> <type> |
Profiles activity such as redstone. | Choose a time and activity type appropriate to the incident you are investigating. |
/lagg sampleTicks <ticks> [raw] |
Samples tick behavior. | The optional raw argument changes the output format. |
/lagg sampleMemory <time> |
Samples memory behavior. | Use a period long enough to include the lag episode. |
Record the output during a quiet period and during the lag spike. Compare worlds rather than assuming that the largest entity count is automatically the cause; a smaller number of expensive redstone machines can matter more than many passive entities.
Build a short baseline
Take the same readings before and after one configuration change. Note the world, approximate player activity and whether a farm or redstone system was running. A single TPS sample can be misleading; repeated observations reveal whether a change helped or merely coincided with a quieter period. ClearLag’s TPS estimate is useful for comparison, but use Spigot’s /tps for the more accurate server-level reading identified by the project listing.
Configure automatic clearing without losing player property
ClearLagg’s cleanup features can remove whatever the configuration selects. Before enabling a schedule, decide which categories are disposable and which are protected. Dropped resources near a mining site, minecarts in a transport system, named mobs, villagers and farm animals may all be valuable even when they look like ordinary entities to a broad rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Define a protection policy
- List items and entities that must never be removed in your worlds.
- Separate public survival areas, farms, event arenas and technical builds if they need different policies.
- Choose whether vehicles, dropped items, hostile mobs, passive mobs and projectiles should be treated differently.
- Announce the cleanup interval in server rules and in-game messages so players can move valuables to storage.
- Test the policy on a copy of the world or during a quiet maintenance window before applying it to active players.
Give players a predictable warning and a clear storage procedure. A warning cannot recover an item after removal, but it lets players move temporary drops, park minecarts and secure livestock. Staff should know which command was used, which world was affected and where the current configuration backup is stored.
Use the manual commands first
/lagg clear removes entities selected by the current configuration. /lagg killmobs removes configured mobs, and /lagg area <radius> removes entities inside a radius. Because these commands act immediately, restrict their permissions to trusted staff and announce their use when players are online.
Only after the manual result matches your policy should you enable an automatic clear cycle. Start with the narrowest entity lists and the longest practical interval, then inspect logs and player reports. If a cleanup removes something important, disable the schedule, restore the relevant backup or world copy where possible, and revise the selection before trying again.
Reload changes correctly
After saving plugins/Clearlag/config.yml, run:
/lagg reload
The command reloads ClearLag’s configuration and schedulers. Confirm that the console reports a successful reload and that no YAML exception appears. If you changed a setting that is initialized only at startup or the plugin remains in an error state, perform a full server restart during a maintenance window instead of repeatedly reloading a broken file.

To disable the updater, set auto-update: false under the settings section, save the file and reload. Manual update control is useful when you need to test a new JAR on a staging server before changing production. Keep the old JAR and configuration until the new build has passed that test; this gives you a straightforward rollback path.
Commands to avoid as routine “fixes”
The maintained listing marks /lagg gc as not recommended and separately cautions about /lagg unloadchunks on later Spigot versions. Forced garbage collection and unloading chunks can create pauses or unexpected behavior; neither command addresses a badly tuned farm, view distance or redstone machine. Do not add them to scheduled maintenance just because TPS is low.
Troubleshoot common failures
ClearLag does not appear after startup
- Confirm the JAR is directly inside
plugins/, not in a nested directory. - Check the console for a failed dependency, Java error or disabled-plugin message.
- Verify that the server is Bukkit/Spigot-compatible and that its Minecraft version falls within the listing’s tested 1.8–1.20.6 range.
- Check the filename and plugin directory for accidental duplicate or outdated JARs, then restart after correcting them.
The configuration will not load
Look for InvalidConfigurationException or a YAML parser error in the console. Stop editing, restore the last known-good backup, and compare changes line by line. Correct indentation, missing colons, unmatched quotes and tab characters. Restart or reload only after the file has been repaired.
Commands are unknown
- Confirm ClearLag enabled successfully; an unloaded plugin cannot register
/lagg. - Use the exact command label and spelling, including the
laggdouble-g convention. - Check that your permissions plugin grants the relevant
lagg.<command-name>node. - Verify that the installed JAR is the intended ClearLag build and that the server version is within the listed compatibility range.
Players report missing items or mobs
Disable automatic clearing immediately and inspect the configured entity lists, per-item lifetimes and module switches. Compare the time of the disappearance with the cleanup schedule and console messages. Restore from a backup where available, then add protected categories and test on a copy before re-enabling any schedule.

Use /lagg profile, /lagg sampleTicks, /lagg performance and server-native profiling to locate the workload. Review view distance, simulation distance, chunk generation, redstone clocks and entity farms. ClearLag cannot make an overloaded CPU, an inefficient farm design or an unsuitable server configuration performant by itself.
Permissions and staff workflow
The maintained listing uses the pattern lagg.<command-name> for permissions. Grant only the commands each staff role needs: ordinary moderators may need reporting commands, while a senior administrator may receive reload or cleanup access. Test the permission map with a non-operator account so a mistaken wildcard does not expose destructive commands to every player.
Separate read-only diagnostics from destructive actions. Reporting commands such as check, tps, performance and memory can be granted to a monitoring role. Reserve clear, killmobs, area and reload for staff who understand the configured policy. Document who may approve a new automatic rule and where its backup is kept.

Updating and maintaining the installation
Keep the JAR, configuration and world backups together with a short change log. Before replacing the plugin, copy the current plugins/Clearlag directory and note the server version, configuration version and enabled modules. Test a new build on a staging copy first. Never assume that an update preserves custom YAML keys; read the new example configuration and merge changes rather than overwriting a carefully tuned file without a backup.
Because the archived release date is February 9, 2021, treat compatibility claims beyond the listing’s tested 1.20.6 range as unverified. If your server runs a newer Minecraft release, check the current distribution page for a newer maintained build and test all cleanup behavior before production use. Do not rely solely on the download count or on a filename copied from another site; verify that the JAR corresponds to the project listing you selected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is ClearLag’s configuration file?
After the first successful startup, open plugins/Clearlag/config.yml under the server root. Back it up before making any edits, and preserve its existing YAML indentation.
How do I reload ClearLag after changing config.yml?
Save the file and run /lagg reload. Watch the console for a successful reload and for YAML errors. Use a full restart if the plugin remains in an error state or a setting requires startup initialization.

Disable the relevant automatic cleanup or module, inspect entity lists and per-item lifetimes, and reload the configuration. Test manual commands on a copy or during a quiet maintenance window, then protect valuable drops, vehicles, villagers and farm animals before re-enabling anything.
Which Minecraft versions does ClearLag support?
The maintained listing identifies v3.2.2 as native to major version 1.13 and tested across Minecraft 1.8 through 1.20.6. Versions outside that range are not established by the listing, so test on a staging server and check for a newer maintained build.
Does ClearLag work on Paper?
ClearLag is listed as a Bukkit/Spigot plugin. Paper and similar forks generally provide Bukkit/Spigot compatibility, but verify your fork’s policy and test the plugin on a copy of the server before production use.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Why does /lagg tps differ from /tps?
ClearLag reports an estimated TPS value. The project listing specifically cautions that Spigot’s /tps is more accurate, so use the server-native reading when judging overall performance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is /lagg gc a safe way to fix lag?
No. The maintained listing marks /lagg gc as not recommended and separately cautions about /lagg unloadchunks on later Spigot versions. Profile the workload and tune view distance, simulation distance, farms or redstone instead.
What should I do after an InvalidConfigurationException?
Stop making further edits, restore the last known-good configuration backup, and compare changes line by line. Correct tabs, indentation, missing colons and unmatched quotes, then reload or restart only after the file parses cleanly.
What permissions does ClearLag use?
The documented pattern is lagg.<command-name>. Grant diagnostic commands separately from destructive commands such as clear, killmobs and area, and test with a non-operator account.
Can ClearLag replace server profiling and tuning?
No. It can manage selected entities and report tick or memory behavior, but it cannot compensate for an overloaded CPU, excessive view or simulation distance, chunk generation, redstone clocks or inefficient farms. Use ClearLag alongside server-native profiling.
The Bottom Line
Install ClearLag conservatively: verify the server version, place the JAR in plugins/, back up plugins/Clearlag/config.yml, observe entity and TPS behavior, and only then enable narrowly defined cleanup rules. Reload with /lagg reload, and treat every automatic removal as a gameplay-impacting change.
