If DayZ stops at authentication with WaitAuthPlayerLoginState or error 0x00040031, restart Steam and the DayZ launcher, make sure Steam is online, and temporarily disable Discord and other overlays before attempting invasive changes. The failure can originate with a game server, Steam’s session, or files and settings on your PC, so the order below moves from low-risk checks to steps that can remove local configuration.

There is no confirmed universal fix. The procedures are community-reported workarounds, and reports of the problem vary by server, account, computer and network. Work through the sections in order and stop as soon as you can log in.

What the WaitAuthPlayerLoginState error means
WaitAuthPlayerLoginState is the label DayZ shows when its login process is waiting for an authenticated player state. The associated numeric code is 0x00040031. A Bohemia Interactive feedback entry uses the visually similar title 0x0004031; that appears to be a typographical variant rather than a separate error.
The usual symptom is that you cannot connect to any server and the login remains stalled at the authentication stage. Authentication involves more than the game executable: the selected server, Steam’s online session, account data and the local DayZ installation can all affect it. That is why a fix that helps one player may do nothing for another.

Before changing files: determine whether the problem is widespread
Check for maintenance or an outage
Look at the DayZ launcher and the game’s current server notices before changing your installation. A maintenance window or a server-side incident can produce the same login stall, including periods when no prominent outage banner has appeared. If every server fails at once, wait briefly and test again rather than immediately deleting local data.
Use the tracker as the official status reference

These reports document the error, but they do not establish a single official fix that applies to every installation. Treat the instructions below as troubleshooting, not as a guaranteed patch.
Fast, low-risk fixes
1. Fully restart Steam and the DayZ launcher
- Close DayZ.
- Exit the DayZ launcher, not just its window if it remains in the notification area.
- Quit Steam from its menu so the Steam client process closes.
- Wait for Steam to finish any cloud-synchronization message. Do not interrupt a sync.
- Start Steam again, wait until it reports you are online, and launch DayZ through the launcher.
Forum users have reported that this sequence solved the problem for them, including one anecdotal report claiming success in about 80% of attempts on the first try. That percentage is a single user’s experience, not a measured success rate. A separate report says simply relaunching Steam and signing in again removed the error.
2. Confirm Steam is online
Open the Steam client and check that it is not in Offline Mode. An offline or partially authenticated Steam session can leave DayZ waiting indefinitely even when your internet connection appears normal. If Steam has just resumed from sleep, an update or a network change, sign out and sign back in before starting the game.
3. Start Discord with administrator rights, then disable its overlay
- Close DayZ and Discord completely.
- Right-click the Discord shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Start Discord first, then launch DayZ.
- In Discord’s settings, disable the game overlay for DayZ, or disable the overlay globally, and try again.
This is the most frequently cited community workaround for this error. Overlay hooks can interfere with authentication or the launcher even when Discord itself appears to work normally. If you use an overlay supplied by your graphics-card software, turn that overlay off temporarily as well. Re-enable overlays one at a time after the login works so you can identify a recurrence trigger.

Attempt an official or otherwise unmodded server if one is available, then test the server that originally failed. If one server works while another does not, the problem is more likely to be server-side, a required mod, or a server-specific name or account rule than a broken DayZ installation.

Repair the DayZ installation
Verify the game files in Steam
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click DayZ and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow Steam to download replacements, then restart the launcher and test a server.
Verification is appropriate after an interrupted update, a crash during patching or a damaged local file. It does not repair a server outage or an invalid Steam session, so keep the earlier checks in mind if verification completes without finding a problem.
Reset the Steam session and the computer
Sign out and reboot
- Exit DayZ and the launcher.
- Sign out of Steam rather than merely closing its window.
- Restart the PC.
- Sign back in to Steam, confirm Online Mode, and launch DayZ.
One Bohemia Interactive feedback report attributes the failure, for that individual, to a long-running Steam session. That does not prove long sessions are a general cause, but a clean sign-in is inexpensive and removes a stale-session variable.
Allow cloud synchronization to complete
Steam may present a conflict between local and cloud save data. If the error began after choosing one side of that dialog, test the other choice. Record which option you selected before changing it, and avoid repeatedly switching while Steam is still synchronizing. Cloud saves can restore older settings, so a choice that appears to fix the login may also bring back an unwanted configuration.

Reset local DayZ settings only after making a backup
Corrupted profile or cache data can block startup or authentication. This step has a real data cost: removing the folders can erase local graphics, controls, launcher preferences and other settings. It should not be the first action.
- Close DayZ, the launcher and Steam.
- Back up the relevant DayZ folders and player-profile file from your Windows AppData locations to another folder. Copy them rather than moving them, so you can restore the original state.
- In AppData, identify folders named DayZ, DayZ Launcher and Bohemia_Interactive, along with the DayZ player-profile file mentioned in your installation.
- Remove or rename one item at a time, starting with cache or profile data, rather than deleting every folder at once.
- Start Steam and DayZ, allow the game to recreate the missing data, and test a server.
- If the reset did not help, close the game and restore your backup before trying a different change.
Renaming a folder to something such as a backup name is safer than permanent deletion because it preserves a rollback path. Do not skip the backup: this workaround is intended to trade local configuration for a clean profile, not to preserve your settings.
When modded servers are involved
Reinstall the server’s mods
For a modded server, unsubscribe from the required mods, restart Steam, then subscribe and download them again before reconnecting. Remove only the mods associated with the affected server; indiscriminately deleting unrelated workshop content makes diagnosis harder. Test an unmodded server after reinstalling so you can distinguish an authentication problem from a damaged or mismatched mod set.

Test a different player name
Some players report that a generic in-game name such as survivor was rejected by particular servers. Change the name temporarily and retry. This is a server-specific report, not a documented global DayZ naming rule, so a successful login with a different name points to that server’s configuration rather than proving your account is broken.
Use the pattern of failures to identify the likely cause

A feedback report describes one person who could log in only from a different computer in a different country. That observation is consistent with a network- or account-specific cause, but it is not evidence that changing countries is a fix. Use another computer or connection only as a diagnostic comparison when it is practical and lawful.
What not to do
- Do not assume the numeric code proves your files are corrupted; the same message can involve Steam or a server.
- Do not delete AppData folders before copying them. A reset can remove settings and make recovery harder.
- Do not keep choosing between Steam Cloud versions at random. Note the selected state and let synchronization finish.
- Do not treat an old forum workaround as an official fix. The age of individual reports is not established, and a current game version may behave differently.
- Do not reinstall the whole game before trying Steam restart, Online Mode, overlay isolation and file verification.
How to report a persistent case
If the error survives the low-risk steps, file a report on the Bohemia Interactive tracker entries above and include information that separates server, Steam and local causes:
- The exact label WaitAuthPlayerLoginState and code 0x00040031 (or the displayed variant).
- Whether every server fails or only a particular server.
- Whether the server is modded, and which mods were installed.
- Your DayZ and Steam launcher versions as displayed at the time of failure.
- Whether Steam was Online, whether a Cloud conflict appeared, and whether a restart changed anything.
- Whether Discord or a graphics-card overlay was enabled.
- Which steps you tried, including file verification or profile reset.
- Your country or network context if the problem changes on another connection, while omitting passwords and other private credentials.
Describe the first time the error appeared and attach screenshots or logs only after removing personal information. This gives maintainers a reproducible pattern instead of a report that says only “cannot log in.”
