Install ProFTPD from your Linux distribution when possible, or compile it with ./configure, make, and make install when you need a version or module the package does not provide. Then edit the single main proftpd.conf, set an existing service user and group, validate every change with proftpd -t -c, and test a second instance on a temporary port before touching the live listener.

For encrypted file transfers, ProFTPD uses mod_tls (FTPS). SFTP is different: it uses SSH semantics through mod_sftp and a separate virtual host. The distinction matters when you are moving game-server saves, mods, or backups to a VPS, because an FTPS client cannot authenticate to an SFTP listener merely by changing its port.

What you need before installing ProFTPD
Write down the VPS distribution and release, the DNS name clients will use, the control-port policy in the host firewall, and the passive-port range you intend to allow. FTP uses a control connection plus separate data connections; a server can accept logins while directory listings and transfers still fail if the passive range is blocked.
- Administrative access: use an account that can install packages, create service accounts, read certificate files, and manage the ProFTPD service.
- A stable name: use a DNS name that matches the certificate you will later deploy for FTPS.
- A transfer root: choose a bounded directory for uploads and downloads instead of exposing the whole filesystem.
- Firewall ownership: identify whether filtering is handled by the VPS firewall, a cloud security group, or both.
- Client requirements: decide whether clients need ordinary FTP, explicit FTPS, implicit FTPS, or SSH-based SFTP. These are not interchangeable modes.
Create a dedicated, least-privilege service or transfer account with the distribution’s account-management tools. The account and group named in proftpd.conf must already exist. Avoid anonymous access unless your use case explicitly requires public downloads; a private game-server backup or mod repository normally should not be anonymous.

Choose a package install or a source build

For routine VPS maintenance, the distribution package is the safer default. Follow the package procedure for your exact distribution and release; package names, configuration paths, and service-unit names vary. If you compile, record the source version, configure options, install prefix, and module set so that a later upgrade can reproduce the installation.
Compile ProFTPD from source
Build from an unpacked ProFTPD source tree with the official three-stage workflow:

- Run
./configure, adding only the modules and paths you have decided to support. - Compile with
make. - Install with
make installusing the privileges required by the chosen prefix.
The configure output tells you which optional modules and libraries were detected. Pay particular attention to TLS support if you plan to use FTPS and to SFTP support if you need SSH-based transfers. A source build that omits a module cannot be fixed by adding a directive later; rebuild with the needed module or load a compatible module supplied by the operating system.
Find the active configuration and service
ProFTPD uses one main configuration file, conventionally named proftpd.conf. Package installations commonly place it in the distribution’s system configuration tree; source installations use the prefix selected during ./configure. Do not assume that the file you edited is the file the daemon reads. Confirm the path used by the service definition or by your manual start command.
Keep a dated backup before editing. If your package includes an example configuration, treat it as a reference rather than blindly replacing the active file. The exact directive context matters: some directives are global, some belong inside a <VirtualHost>, and others are valid only when a module is loaded.
Create a safe baseline configuration
Set the identity and operating mode first. A minimal standalone baseline looks like this; adapt paths and account names to your VPS:

Group ftpserviceServerType standalone is appropriate when ProFTPD listens as its own daemon. A distribution that launches ProFTPD through a service manager may use the service-managed equivalent instead. Do not copy both models into production without understanding which process owns the listener.

The User and Group values are not labels. ProFTPD must be able to switch to those existing identities, and the account must have only the filesystem access required for transfers. If either identity is missing, the daemon will fail to start or will reject the configuration.
Separate service identity from human logins
Keep the daemon’s runtime identity separate from personal administrator accounts. Give each human or application the smallest directory scope needed. For a game server, a common pattern is a staging directory for incoming files and a separate directory owned by the game-service account; this prevents an FTP login from modifying executables or unrelated virtual hosts.
Check ownership and mode bits on every parent directory. A user can have valid credentials and still receive an empty listing, permission error, or failed upload because one parent directory is not searchable or writable. Test with the same account and path that the client will use, not with a root shell.

Use ProFTPD’s documented chroot and home-directory features to confine sessions to the transfer tree. The exact directive and context depend on the modules and version installed, so verify them in the directive reference before deployment. A bounded root is especially important on a VPS that also runs databases, game processes, or control panels.
Validate every edit before restarting
Never make a syntax change and immediately restart the production daemon. Run:
proftpd -t -c /path/to/proftpd.confReplace the path with the active file. The test checks parsing and reports syntax, missing-module, and file-path problems without replacing the running process. Fix the first reported error, run the command again, and continue until the configuration tests cleanly.
- Syntax or context error: check whether the directive belongs globally, inside a virtual host, or inside a module-specific block.
- Unknown directive: confirm that the module providing it was built and loaded.
- Missing file: verify certificate, key, include, and directory paths from the daemon’s point of view, including permissions.
- Unknown user or group: create the account or correct the spelling before attempting a start.
Use a second instance for a non-disruptive rollout
For a production VPS, copy the configuration to a temporary file, change only the test listener’s Port, and start a second ProFTPD process with that file. Choose a port that is not used by another service and allow it temporarily in the VPS firewall. Keep the production port in the original configuration.

Against the test listener, perform the complete workflow:
- Connect with the intended client and authentication method.
- Confirm that the session starts in the expected home or chroot directory.
- List directories, including the directory where game files or backups will live.
- Upload a harmless test file and verify ownership and mode on the VPS.
- Download the same file and compare its size or checksum.
- Delete the test file using the account’s intended permissions.
- Repeat the checks with TLS enabled if the production policy requires FTPS.
Only after these checks succeed should you stop or reload the live service and restore the production port. Remove the temporary firewall rule and test process afterward so an abandoned listener does not become an unnoticed exposure.
Enable encrypted FTP with mod_tls (FTPS)
FTPS is FTP protected by SSL/TLS. ProFTPD implements it through mod_tls. The module must be built or loaded before its directives can work.
Configure the certificate and private key
Enable the TLS engine and point ProFTPD at a certificate and its matching private key. A typical module block is:

Protect the private-key file so only the service account and the administrators who need to maintain it can read it. The certificate name should match the DNS name clients use; otherwise clients may warn even when encryption itself works.
Choose what TLS is mandatory for

Select a current TLS protocol policy supported by the OpenSSL version installed on the VPS. Do not copy a protocol setting from an unrelated server: an over-restrictive policy can make every client fail, while an obsolete policy weakens security. After changing TLS settings, test both certificate validation and an actual upload/download, because a successful encrypted login does not prove that the data channel negotiated correctly.
Common FTPS failures
- Certificate cannot be opened: check the path, ownership, and read permissions for the daemon.
- Key mismatch: verify that the private key belongs to the certificate presented by the server.
- TLS negotiation error: compare the client’s supported protocols with the policy allowed by the installed OpenSSL and ProFTPD build.
- Login works but transfers fail: inspect passive ports and firewall rules; TLS does not remove FTP’s separate data connection.
Configure virtual hosts and multiple policies
Use <VirtualHost> blocks when separate addresses or service policies need different names, ports, users, roots, authentication methods, or TLS requirements. This is useful when one VPS serves a private game-backup endpoint and a different transfer service for another project.

</VirtualHost>The address in the example is documentation-only; substitute an address actually assigned to your VPS. Keep site-specific rules inside the correct virtual-host context and leave global defaults deliberately small. A directive that works globally may be rejected or behave differently when placed in a virtual host, so validate after every move.
Virtual users and authentication backends
ProFTPD supports virtual users, authentication backends, and per-site access policies through directives and modules. Choose the backend that matches your environment, create only the accounts required, and map each account to a bounded home directory. Store backend credentials with the same care as system passwords, and test an invalid login as well as a valid one.
Authentication success is only one control. Also test read, write, rename, delete, and directory traversal behavior for each account. A virtual user that can log in but can write outside its intended tree is a configuration failure, not a client problem.
FTPS and SFTP are different protocols

If a client requires SFTP, load and configure mod_sftp and create the separate virtual host for the SSH-facing address and port. Configure its host keys and authentication according to the module version you installed. Do not label a mod_tls listener as SFTP: an SFTP client will not negotiate with an FTPS endpoint, and an FTPS client will not become SFTP by connecting to port 22.

Plan firewall and passive-port access
Allow the chosen control port and the entire passive-port range in every firewall layer between the client and the VPS. Keep the range bounded rather than opening all high ports. The range must match ProFTPD’s passive-mode configuration and the cloud firewall policy.
When diagnosing a hang, distinguish the stages:
- Cannot connect: check DNS resolution, the control-port listener, and inbound firewall rules.
- Login succeeds but listing hangs: check passive-mode address and range, then inspect firewall logs.
- Listing works but upload stalls: verify that the data range permits both directions and that the destination directory is writable.
- Works locally but not remotely: compare the VPS’s public address, NAT or cloud rules, and the address advertised for passive connections.
Retest through the same network path your users or deployment automation will use. A localhost test proves only that the daemon and local permissions work; it does not prove that the public firewall permits the data channel.

For a game VPS, treat FTP access as a deployment boundary rather than as a second administrator shell. Keep live world data and executable server files outside the default upload area when possible. Upload to staging, verify the file, then move it into the game-service directory through a controlled process.

- Stop or quiesce the game process before replacing world saves or configuration files that it may be writing.
- Use a separate transfer account for each person, automation job, or project.
- Grant write access only to the directories that need uploads; make release or executable directories read-only to transfer users.
- Keep backups outside the writable tree so a compromised transfer account cannot erase every copy.
- Record which virtual host and account handled a deployment so a failed upload can be traced without granting shell access.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The daemon will not start after an edit
Run proftpd -t -c /path/to/proftpd.conf against the exact file used by the service. Correct the first syntax, context, missing-module, path, or user/group error reported. If the test passes but startup still fails, compare the service’s configuration path, environment, and permissions with the command you tested manually.
Users cannot log in
Verify the selected authentication module and backend, the account’s password or credentials, the account shell policy required by your distribution, and the configured home directory. Confirm that the User and Group used by the daemon exist, then inspect ownership and search permissions on every parent directory. Test with a newly created least-privilege account to separate an account problem from a global policy problem.
FTPS clients reject the handshake
Confirm that mod_tls is loaded, TLSEngine is enabled in the context handling the connection, and both certificate paths are readable. Check that the key matches the certificate and that the client’s protocol capabilities overlap the current policy supported by the installed OpenSSL. If the certificate is valid but transfers fail after login, investigate the passive data path separately.
Directory listings or transfers hang
Check the control port first, then the configured passive range in the VPS firewall and any upstream security group. Confirm that the server advertises an address reachable by the client. Finally, check destination ownership and free space; a network-looking failure can be a local write denial.
An SFTP client reports “connection refused” or a protocol error
Make sure the client is pointed at the SSH/SFTP endpoint configured with mod_sftp, not at the FTPS listener. Confirm that the separate SFTP virtual host is loaded, that its SSH-facing port is allowed, and that its host-key and authentication settings match the client.

- Save the exact active configuration path and a rollback copy.
- Confirm the service identity, transfer accounts, home directories, and ownership.
- Run
proftpd -t -cafter every configuration change. - Use a temporary port and a second process for disruptive changes.
- Test login, listing, upload, download, rename, and delete with each policy.
- Verify FTPS certificate expiry, key permissions, and protocol compatibility.
- Review passive-port and control-port firewall rules after every network change.
- Remove temporary listeners, firewall exceptions, test files, and test accounts.
- Document whether each client uses FTPS or SFTP so future operators do not mix the protocols.
With those controls in place, ProFTPD remains a predictable transfer service: one explicitly managed configuration, least-privilege identities, a tested rollout path, and a deliberate choice between TLS-protected FTP and SSH-based SFTP.
