Every player must use the same mod names, versions, and required addons.

You can run that stack on your own Windows or Linux machine for maximum control, or choose managed hosting if you would rather have someone else maintain the operating system, network endpoint, and updates. The steps below cover both models, with commands and checks for a first successful session.

What you need before installing anything
Decide what kind of session you are building first. A cooperative unit operation with a known group can tolerate a private password and a small, fixed collection. A public server needs stronger administration, predictable update procedures, and enough CPU, memory, upload bandwidth, and network headroom for its intended player count.
- A legitimate Arma 3 installation and permission to run a dedicated server on the host.
- A Windows or Linux machine that can remain online for the length of your operations.
- Administrative access to the operating system, firewall, and (for home hosting) the router.
- A separate directory for SteamCMD and another separate directory for the dedicated-server files. Do not mix either with your desktop Arma 3 client files.
- A specific Star Wars mission, campaign, or community pack selected before you download mods.
- A written list of that mission’s required mods, dependencies, versions, and any server keys or installation notes.
Steam Support states that standalone Steam game servers use SteamCMD to download and update their files. Bohemia Interactive also recommends separating the SteamCMD directory, server directory, and client installation. That separation makes updates, backups, and troubleshooting much safer.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Both models run the same dedicated-server software. The difference is who owns the machine and who performs the maintenance.

Choose self-hosting when you need unrestricted file access, custom launch scripts, or frequent experimentation. Choose managed hosting when the value is avoiding OS maintenance, router work, and 24-hour hardware operation. In either case, the mission’s dependency rules remain the deciding factor for Star Wars content.

Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Windows installation
- Create two directories, for example
C:steamcmdandC:arma3server. Keep your normal Arma 3 client elsewhere. - Install SteamCMD in the first directory and start it from its executable.
- Use an anonymous SteamCMD login for the dedicated-server app, set the installation directory to the server directory, and run an update. A typical command is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:arma3server +login anonymous +app_update 233780 validate +quitThe application identifier above is the Arma 3 dedicated-server app. The validate pass checks downloaded files; omit it during routine updates if you do not need a full verification.
- Run the update again whenever the game server receives a platform or game update. Keep a dated backup of your configuration and profile directories before major changes.
- Create a non-administrator Windows account for routine server operation where practical, and restrict remote administration to the methods you actually use.
Linux installation
- Create separate directories for SteamCMD and the server, then create a dedicated non-root account for running the game server.
- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package or Valve’s archive, and place it in the SteamCMD directory.
- From that account, download the server into its own directory:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /srv/arma3server +login anonymous +app_update 233780 validate +quit- Do not run the game server as root. Give the service account ownership of the server and profile directories.
- Linux profile and path behavior differs from Windows. Use explicit absolute paths for the profile and configuration locations, then check the generated log and profile files after the first launch.
Bohemia Interactive’s Linux guidance specifically calls for a non-root account and notes Linux-specific profile/path behavior. Treat that as a deployment requirement rather than an optional hardening step.
Create the server profile and server.cfg
The configuration file defines the server’s identity and access behavior. The profile stores difficulty and related settings. Keep both outside the client installation and reference them explicitly at launch.
A minimal configuration
Save a file named server.cfg in your server configuration directory:

};Change every example value before exposing the server. A blank password makes the game server joinable without a player password; setting one is appropriate for a private unit. The administrator password is separate and should never be posted with the public connection details.
Profile and difficulty
On first launch, the server creates or uses the profile specified by your launch command. Difficulty, view-related settings, and other profile-controlled behavior belong there rather than in the mod folder. If an operation’s briefing specifies a difficulty, make the change in the profile used by that instance and verify it in a test mission.
Open the required network ports
A default Arma 3 instance uses a consecutive UDP block. Allow the block through the host firewall and, for a home server, forward it from the router to the host’s private IP address.

Windows Firewall
- Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
- Create a new Inbound Rule, choose Port, select UDP, and enter
2302-2306. - Allow the connection only on the network profiles you use, and name the rule so you can audit it later.
- If outbound traffic is restricted by your policy, create the corresponding outbound rule.
Linux firewall
For a host using UFW, the equivalent rule is:
sudo ufw allow 2302:2306/udpUse the firewall system appropriate to your distribution, and confirm that a cloud provider’s security group or edge firewall is not blocking the same range.

Router forwarding and multiple instances
Give the server a stable private address, then forward UDP 2302–2306 to that address. If your Internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; ask the provider for a public address or use managed hosting.
To run more than one instance, assign each instance its own separated port block. Set the alternate game port with -port, then move the associated query, master, VON, and BattlEye ports so no two instances claim the same socket. Test each instance independently before advertising both.

Choose the Star Wars mission before choosing the mod list
“Star Wars server” is not one universal package. It describes a mission and the collection of addons that mission expects. Start with the exact Workshop mission, campaign, or community pack you intend to run.
Bohemia Interactive’s 2024 overview reported more than 140,000 Arma 3 Workshop mods. That abundance is useful, but it also means that a similarly named faction, vehicle, or terrain addon may not be interchangeable with the one used by your mission.

- Record the mission’s required mod names exactly as displayed by its author.
- Read every dependency entry, including common framework, terrain, faction, sound, and user-interface addons.
- Check whether the author specifies a version, release branch, load order, server key, or dedicated-server instruction.
- Confirm that the license permits the way you intend to distribute or mirror the content. Do not repackage a mod merely to make its folder name look shorter.
- Note the mission’s update date and whether its collection changes between operations.
Do not promise that two Star Wars packs are compatible because they use the same era or faction. Compatibility is established by the selected mission and its published dependencies, not by a theme.
Install and organize the mods on the server
- Download every required server-side mod using the method supported by the mission author or your hosting panel. Workshop content is free additional content, but each item still has its own dependency and licensing terms.
- Place each mod in the server directory with the folder name expected by the mission. Preserve the author’s keys and any accompanying signature files.
- Keep a written manifest containing the mod folder name, Workshop item or release identifier, installed version, and date updated.
- Remove obsolete copies rather than leaving two versions with similar names. Duplicate frameworks are a common source of ambiguous addon errors.
- Load client-required content with the server’s
-modparameter. Keep genuinely server-only files in the appropriate server-side location and follow the mission’s instructions for headless or optional components. - After an update, inspect the log for missing addons and signature failures before inviting players.
Never assume that subscribing to an item on your personal Steam account updates a separate dedicated server. The server’s files must be updated in the server installation, and every player must update the client collection as well.
Launch the server with profile, config, port, and mods
Windows batch file
Create a batch file beside the server executable. Replace the example mod folder names with the exact names in your chosen mission’s instructions:

pauseThe -name value selects the profile identity, -profiles points to the profile directory, -config selects server.cfg, and -port chooses the instance’s game port. The semicolon-separated -mod list must match the installed folders.

Linux command
./arma3server_x64 -name=outerrim -profiles=/srv/arma3server/profiles -config=/srv/arma3server/server.cfg -port=2302 -mod="@CBA_A3;@StarWarsFramework;@MissionRequiredPack"Run the command from the directory containing arma3server_x64, or use its absolute path in a service definition. Keep the process under the non-root account created earlier.
Managed-host launch
A managed control panel may expose fields for the profile, configuration file, port, and mod list instead of a batch file. Upload or select the required mods, enter the same folder names in the launch parameters, and restart only after the panel reports that synchronization is complete. If the panel hides command-line access, ask support how it handles keys, signature verification, and Workshop updates before committing to a mission.
Make clients match the server
A player can see a server in the browser and still fail to join if the local collection differs. Publish one authoritative collection or manifest to your group.
- Use the same mod names and versions on the server and every client.
- Install all transitive dependencies, not only the headline Star Wars faction or vehicle pack.
- Remove old versions and duplicate folders from client profiles.
- Update the collection whenever the mission author changes its requirements.
- Restart the game after a mod update so the launcher does not retain an old load state.
If the selected mission changes its required collection, update the server first, then publish the new collection to players before the next session. A server running one revision while half the group runs another will produce join failures, missing-asset errors, or a mission that never loads.
First-launch validation
- Start the server and wait for its console or log to show that the network listener and mission system have initialized.
- Search for the server from an external client, not only from the host machine.
- Join with a test account using the identical mod set.
- Confirm that the intended Star Wars mission appears and reaches its briefing without missing-addon messages.
- Test an administrator login, player password (if enabled), voting behavior, and voice communication.
- Read the server log from the same launch for warnings about missing addons, unsigned files, duplicate classes, or signature mismatches.
- Record the working command line, mod manifest, profile, and configuration as the known-good baseline.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Maintenance that prevents repeat failures
Back up the right files
Back up server.cfg, the profile directory, mission rotation or selection data, the mod manifest, and any custom scripts. Backing up only the game executable does not preserve the settings that make an operation reproducible.
Use a staging instance
Keep a second installation or port block for testing updates. Apply one change at a time, launch the mission with a test client, and compare logs before updating the live instance.

Document every change
Record the date, mod version, mission revision, changed launch parameter, and result. When a collection contains dozens of dependencies, a short change log is faster than guessing which update introduced a failure.

Protect the administrator password, limit who can edit the collection, and decide who can restart the process during an operation. Public servers also need a moderation plan; technical uptime does not prevent disruptive players.
How to select a Star Wars mod pack
Use this comparison checklist when two or more collections appear suitable:

| Keys and dedicated-server instructions | Does the pack supply the expected keys and explain which files belong on a dedicated server? |
If a pack fails one of these checks, select a different mission or ask its maintainer for clarification. Do not conceal an unresolved dependency by disabling signature checks or copying another pack’s files.
Operational checklist
- Before installation: choose self-hosting or managed hosting, select the mission, and capture its dependency list.
- Before opening the server: install with SteamCMD, separate directories, configure the profile and
server.cfg, and open UDP 2302–2306. - Before inviting players: install the exact mod set, preserve keys, test from an external client, and verify the mission loads.
- Before every operation: compare the server manifest with the published client collection and check for mission updates.
- After an update: read the log, run a short test mission, and retain a backup of the last known-good state.
The practical decision is straightforward: self-host when control and customization justify maintaining SteamCMD, networking, and the operating system; use managed hosting when those duties are the problem you want to remove. Whichever route you choose, a dependable Arma 3 Star Wars server is built around one verified mission, one exact dependency collection, explicit network settings, and a repeatable update process.
