Install Sphinx Search by choosing a package or project binary, defining a data source and index in sphinx.conf, building the first index with indexer, and only then starting searchd. On a VPS, the reliable deployment pattern is to keep the listener private, give the daemon writable log, PID and data paths, and refresh offline indexes with rotation or use a real-time index when documents change frequently.

This guide covers Sphinx Search, the open-source SQL full-text search server—not the Python documentation generator or the CMU Sphinx speech-recognition projects. Commands and paths can differ between Sphinx generations and Linux packages, so verify the installed binary’s defaults before applying them to production.

What you need before installing
Sphinx has separate processes for extracting documents, building index files and serving queries. A usable VPS installation therefore needs more than a daemon package: it needs a source query, an index definition, storage locations and a listener that your application can reach.
- A supported Linux distribution and CPU architecture, with the distribution release recorded.
- A source database or feed. Sphinx supports sources such as MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL and XML; the source type determines the client libraries and configuration directives.
- A database account that can read the rows needed for indexing. Use a narrowly privileged account rather than an administrator login.
- Enough disk space for the index, temporary build files, logs and at least one rotated copy during an online refresh.
- A decision between offline indexes, which are rebuilt by
indexer, and real-time indexes, which accept documents through SphinxQL. - A service account, configuration directory, data directory and log directory that are writable or readable as appropriate for the package’s daemon user.
Record the expected corpus size and update rate now. A mostly static catalogue is usually simpler with offline indexes and scheduled rotation; rapidly changing content may justify a real-time-index design, which has different ingestion and maintenance requirements.

Choose a package or a project binary
There are two practical installation routes. Distribution packages provide service integration and a filesystem layout chosen by the package maintainer. Project binaries give you tighter control over the Sphinx build and version, but you must establish paths, permissions and service startup yourself.

Do not treat a repository command copied from an older tutorial as universally valid. Repository names, signing policies and package availability are distribution- and version-dependent. Confirm that the Sphinx build you select supports your target Linux release before exposing a production service.

Install source dependencies
For a MySQL-compatible source, the documented Debian/Ubuntu workflow begins by refreshing package metadata and installing common client dependencies:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mysql-client unixodbc libpq5Install only the clients needed by your source. PostgreSQL, ODBC and MySQL dependencies differ by build; unnecessary packages increase maintenance without improving search.
Add a Sphinx package repository when appropriate
The project documentation gives this example for a Sphinx 2.2-era build:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:builds/sphinxsearch-rel22
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sphinxsearchThis repository instruction is historical and may not be appropriate for your Ubuntu release. Check package availability, supported releases and the package’s signing configuration first. If the package is absent or incompatible, use a project binary that matches the operating system instead of forcing an unsupported repository.

Confirm what the package installed
After installation, identify the actual executable and configuration location supplied by the package. Check the service name and account, then inspect the package’s unit file or documentation. Do not assume that /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf, /var/lib/sphinxsearch or the sphinxsearch account exists on every build.

systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i sphinxUse the discovered paths consistently in every subsequent command. If you installed a binary manually, place its configuration in a root-owned directory and make the service account’s access explicit.
Install from a project binary
When package selection is unsuitable, obtain the binary release that matches your operating system and architecture, unpack it under a controlled location and create a configuration file. The quick-start workflow is: download the binary, write sphinx.conf, build an offline index with indexer, start searchd, query it, and later refresh with indexer --rotate --all.

Keep the binary, configuration and index data in separate directories so an upgrade does not overwrite data. Create a dedicated unprivileged account for the daemon, grant it read access to the binary and configuration, write access to its PID and log locations, and ownership of the index directory. Test the binary’s version and help output before creating a service unit; directive names and defaults can vary between Sphinx generations.
Build a working sphinx.conf
The configuration has three essential building blocks: a source that extracts rows, an index that stores searchable fields and attributes, and a searchd block that controls serving. Add real-time index definitions only when your ingestion design calls for them.
Source: connect to the application data
A minimal MySQL source might look like this:

}Replace every value with your schema. The query must return a unique document identifier plus the text columns you want indexed. In a real deployment, use a secret-management approach rather than committing a live password to source control, and grant the reader only the SELECT permissions it needs.
Field names come from the selected columns and Sphinx’s source parsing rules; attributes are typed values retained for filtering, sorting or grouping rather than full-text matching. Confirm the exact syntax supported by your installed generation, especially when migrating an older configuration.
Index: name and store the searchable data

}The index path is a file prefix, not merely a directory label. Its parent must exist and be writable by the account running indexer and searchd. If you define multiple indexes, give each a distinct name and path, then target the intended name in queries and rotation commands.
Search daemon: logs, PID and listener

}The listener syntax supports an address and port, a port alone, or a Unix-domain socket. Port 9312 is common but not guaranteed; use the value actually present in your configuration. A loopback listener is appropriate when the application runs on the same VPS. For a separate application host, bind to a private interface and restrict access at the network boundary.
Create the log, PID and data parent directories before startup, assign ownership according to the service unit, and check that the runtime directory under /run is recreated correctly after reboot. A configuration can parse successfully yet fail at startup if one of these paths is missing or unwritable.
Validate the configuration before indexing
Use the searchd binary supplied by your build to validate or start in diagnostic mode, and use its explicit configuration option when the file is not in the package default location. The exact validation switch differs by generation, so consult that binary’s help output rather than copying a flag from an unrelated release. A practical diagnostic command is:
searchd --console --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf--console keeps the process attached and prints startup diagnostics; stop it after confirming that the configuration parses, then build the index. Never leave a diagnostic daemon running as an accidental second instance.

Build the first offline index
Build an initial index before starting the normal service. Starting searchd with no index files is a common cause of an immediate failure.
- Verify the source independently. Run the SQL query as the configured reader and confirm that it returns a unique identifier and the expected text columns.
- Create the index parent directory and give the indexing account write permission.
- Run the indexer against the exact configuration file:
sudo -u sphinxsearch indexer --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf --all- Read the indexer output. It should report the source rows processed and the files written; errors in SQL authentication, schema names or permissions must be fixed before proceeding.
- Check that the generated index files are readable by the account that will run
searchd. If the package uses another account, substitute it forsphinxsearch. - For a single index, replace
--allwith its configured name, such asapp_index, to limit the build.
Changing the source query, indexed fields or index settings generally requires a rebuild. Keep the old index available until the replacement has completed if you need a quick rollback.
Start and verify searchd safely
Start through the package service
Once the initial index exists and paths are writable, use the package’s service integration:
sudo systemctl enable --now sphinxsearchThe unit may have a different name on a binary installation. Check systemctl status immediately after starting and inspect the configured daemon log for warnings.

Sphinx documents status and stop controls. Use the same configuration path used for indexing:
searchd --status --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.confA successful status response confirms that the daemon can read its PID and communicate with the running process. To test search behavior, connect with the SphinxQL client or your application’s Sphinx driver, select app_index, and issue a query that should match a known document. Verify both a positive match and a term that should return no rows; this catches accidental queries against the wrong index.
For a controlled shutdown, use the documented stop operation or the service manager rather than killing a process by an arbitrary PID:
searchd --stop --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.confUse --console while diagnosing a failed start, then return to the service manager for normal operation.
Bind and protect the query listener
Treat the Sphinx listener as a network service. Binding to 127.0.0.1:9312 prevents remote hosts from connecting, which is desirable when the application and search daemon share a VPS. If the application is elsewhere, bind only to the required private interface or use a Unix socket where supported.

- Document the selected address and port so application configuration and firewall rules agree.
- Allow inbound traffic only from trusted application hosts at the VPS firewall and any upstream security group.
- Do not expose a listener to the public internet merely because a client cannot connect; first verify the address, route and firewall policy.
- Keep daemon and index files off world-writable directories, and protect database credentials in the configuration.
- Review query and daemon logs for unexpected clients, repeated failures and disk-growth problems.
Sphinx documentation defines listener forms and controls but does not choose firewall rules for your provider or operating system. Apply a least-privilege network policy appropriate to your VPS.
Keep an offline index current with rotation
Offline indexes are refreshed by rerunning the source query and producing replacement files. Use rotation so the daemon can continue serving the existing index while the new one is built:

indexer --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.conf --rotate --allFor scheduled maintenance, run this command under a service account with access to the configuration, database and index paths. A timer or cron job should record exit status and alert on failures; otherwise a stale index can persist silently. Name individual indexes instead of --all when only one dataset changes.
Rotation needs temporary disk space for the new files and enough retention for the daemon’s handoff. Monitor free space, build duration and row counts. If the source query returns zero rows because of a database outage or an incorrect filter, do not automatically replace a known-good index without a validation check.
Choose a refresh schedule
Set the schedule from the application’s freshness requirement and the source size. A low-change catalogue may need a nightly build; a news-like feed may require more frequent rotation. The documentation supplies the rotation mechanism, not a universal interval or capacity number, so measure your own query and build times before selecting a schedule.
When a real-time index is a better fit
Real-time indexes use a different ingestion model: the application inserts and updates documents through SphinxQL instead of waiting for a complete offline rebuild. The reference configuration treats real-time indexes separately from ordinary source-and-index definitions.

- Define the real-time index and its attributes according to the syntax supported by your installed build.
- Design document IDs, update handling and deletion behavior before sending production writes.
- Keep an offline rebuild or backup strategy for recovery; real-time ingestion does not remove the need to monitor disk usage and consistency.
Do not mix commands casually: indexer --rotate refreshes offline index files, whereas a real-time index is populated through its SQL interface. Select one ingestion contract for each index and make the application target the corresponding name.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Package not found” or an unavailable repository
Check the Linux release, architecture and repository support. The example PPA is tied to an older Sphinx release and may not publish packages for your current Ubuntu version. Remove an incompatible repository rather than weakening package verification, then select a supported package or project binary.
The daemon exits immediately
Run it in the foreground:
searchd --console --config /etc/sphinxsearch/sphinx.confRead the first configuration, path or permission error, correct it, and retry. Typical causes are a missing log directory, an unwritable PID path, a malformed directive or an index path that does not exist.

Permission denied while indexing or starting
Compare ownership and mode on the configuration, index files, parent directories, logs and runtime directory. The account running indexer needs to create or replace index files; the account running searchd needs to read them and write its PID and logs. Avoid solving this with a world-writable directory.
No results for known documents
- Run the source query directly and confirm it returns rows.
- Check that the expected text is in a configured field, not only in an attribute.
- Confirm the query targets the intended index name.
- Inspect indexer output for rejected rows or SQL errors.
- Rebuild after changing the source query, field list or index configuration.
Remote client cannot connect
Inspect the configured listener address and port. A loopback bind is intentionally unreachable from another host. If the bind is correct, check the VPS firewall, upstream security group and the client’s route. Do not open the port publicly until you have a source-address restriction.
Results are stale
For offline indexes, run a successful rotated build and verify that the row count and timestamp changed. For high-churn content, reassess whether a real-time index matches the required freshness. Check scheduler logs so a failed recurring build cannot go unnoticed.
Operational checklist for production
- Record the Sphinx version, package or binary origin, configuration path and service account.
- Keep database credentials out of public repositories and limit the source account’s permissions.
- Build and validate the first index before enabling the daemon at boot.
- Store logs and indexes on monitored filesystems with sufficient rotation space.
- Bind locally or to a private interface whenever possible, and restrict firewall sources.
- Test
--status, controlled stopping and a known-result query as part of deployment. - Schedule
indexer --rotatefor offline indexes, capture its exit status and alert on failure. - Back up configuration and document how to rebuild indexes after a VPS replacement.
- Recheck directive compatibility when upgrading between Sphinx generations or changing package sources.
Package or binary: a practical decision
Use the distribution package when its release supports your operating system and you value a ready-made service account, unit file and update path. Prefer a project binary when the available package is obsolete, you need a specific build, or reproducible version pinning outweighs the extra work of managing service integration. In either case, the deployment is complete only after the source query works, the first index is built, the listener is deliberately bound and a real query has been verified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start Sphinx Search before creating an index?
No. Build at least one index with indexer first; starting the daemon without index files commonly fails.

No. It is a common default, but the listen directive can use another TCP port, an address-and-port pair or a Unix-domain socket, depending on the build.
