What a Banov installation actually contains
Banov is not a single folder that can be dropped into a DayZ server. A working installation has separate components that perform different jobs:

- The
empty.banovmission: the mission-world files that define the active world, economy, events and other server data. BANOV.bikey: the public key used by signature verification on the server.- A matching client installation: every player must have the same Banov Workshop content enabled in the DayZ client.
The map mod and mission are related but independent. Installing only the Workshop item leaves the server without the mission selected; installing only the mission leaves the server without the map content it references. Both must be present and the names must match exactly, including capitalization.
Requirements and decisions before you copy files
Use the dedicated-server application, not the client application
The stable DayZ dedicated-server application is identified by Steam app ID 223350. The normal DayZ client uses app ID 221100 and is also where Workshop content is obtained for players. Do not point a SteamCMD or hosting-panel installation at the client app ID when you intend to install the server.

Start from a clean or known-good server
Banov troubleshooting is much easier when the server is vanilla. If an existing installation already has a large mod stack, make a complete backup and consider testing Banov in a separate instance. Incompatible Workshop mods can prevent startup or crash the server, and a failure on a heavily modified server does not identify which component is responsible.
Back up before changing the mission
Stop the server before copying or replacing files. Back up the current server directory and the active mission configuration, especially types.xml, events.xml and any other XML files you have edited. A mission update can replace or add files, and your custom economy or event changes must be merged deliberately rather than overwritten.

Download the Banov map from the DayZ Steam Workshop and obtain the mission files intended for that release. Extract the mission package into a folder named exactly empty.banov. Do not rename it to a personal label: the value in serverDZ.cfg must match the directory name character for character.
Manual installation on a dedicated server
1. Stop the server and create a rollback copy
- Stop the DayZ service or launch process cleanly.
- Copy the current server files and configuration to a dated backup location.
- Save a separate copy of the active mission folder and all XML files you have customized.
A rollback copy lets you restore the previous mission if the new package has an XML error or is not compatible with the current DayZ build.
2. Download the Workshop map and mission files
Subscribe to or download Banov through the DayZ Workshop, then download the matching mission files from the Banov distribution. The Workshop directory and the mission archive serve different purposes. Extract the mission archive so that the final folder itself is empty.banov, rather than creating an extra nested level such as empty.banovempty.banov.
Before proceeding, open the extracted folder and confirm that it contains the expected mission files rather than another archive. If your hosting provider supplies a prebuilt mission package, use the provider’s current package for the same Banov release instead of mixing files from unrelated versions.

3. Copy the Banov Workshop content to the server
Copy the Banov Workshop content into the location used by your DayZ server for Workshop mods. Preserve the mod directory name supplied by the package. The launch parameter will normally refer to this directory as @Banov; if your existing setup uses a different naming convention, keep the same convention consistently in the folder and launch line.
Do not copy only selected map subfolders. The server needs the complete mod package, including its signature material and all data files distributed with that version.
4. Install the signature key
Inside the Banov mod, locate the keys folder and copy BANOV.bikey into the dedicated server’s own keys directory. The key is used when the server checks signed content. A missing or misplaced key commonly produces a signature or missing-key error even when the Workshop files are otherwise correct.
Keep the key from the same Banov package as the mod you installed. Do not rename it, place it in the mission folder, or assume that a key left by an older release covers a newer package.

5. Place the mission folder in the server’s mission directory
Copy empty.banov under the server’s mission directory, alongside the other mission folders used by your installation. The exact parent path differs between self-hosted layouts and hosting panels, so use the directory where your existing missions are stored.
Check the final path and spelling. The active folder must be named empty.banov in the same capitalization used by the configuration. A folder called empty.Banov, Empty.banov or banov is not equivalent for a case-sensitive path or a strict panel selector.

6. Select Banov in serverDZ.cfg
Open the server’s serverDZ.cfg and find the mission or mission-template block. Set the template value to:
template="empty.banov"Keep the rest of the configuration syntax intact. The template value selects the mission folder; it does not load the Workshop map by itself. If this line still points to a Chernarus or Livonia mission, the server can start on the wrong world even though Banov files are present.
7. Add Banov to the server’s mod parameter
Edit the launch configuration used by the dedicated server and add @Banov to the existing server-mod parameter. Match the separator and ordering style already used by your installation. Do not create a second conflicting mod parameter or place @Banov in a client-only parameter by mistake.
If other mods are listed, leave them out for the first test. A minimal launch configuration containing Banov makes it possible to distinguish a Banov installation problem from an incompatibility in another Workshop package.
8. Start, read the logs and test with a matching client
- Start the server with Banov as the only non-vanilla Workshop map content.
- Watch the startup output and server logs for mission-not-found, signature, mod-loading and XML parsing errors.
- Join from a DayZ client that has the same Banov Workshop content installed and enabled.
- Confirm that the character spawns in Banov, loot is generated, events load and persistence works after a restart.
There is no universal log location because it depends on the server layout and host. Use the exact error text as your diagnostic starting point rather than applying a generic fix. A successful process launch is not enough: the world, mission data and persistence must all be verified in game.

Hosting-panel installation
Managed panels hide the file-copy and launch-line work, but the underlying requirements remain the same. Labels and behavior vary by provider, so use the current instructions shown in your panel rather than assuming that every interface has identical paths.

Documented panel flow
- Stop the DayZ server.
- Open the panel’s Mod Manager or equivalent Workshop-management page.
- Find Banov in the Community Maps category and choose Install.
- Start the server and inspect the startup output.
This three-step pattern is documented by GTXGaming and GamingDeluxe. A panel may automatically place the key, mission and launch parameter, or it may expose those items separately. If the panel offers a mission selector, choose empty.banov; if it exposes a mod list, confirm that Banov is enabled there as well.
For a first panel test, use a fresh or vanilla server. Once Banov loads and you can join, add gameplay mods incrementally. This preserves the same diagnostic discipline as a manual installation.
How to add other mods without losing the working baseline
Banov can work correctly by itself and still fail after another Workshop mod is enabled. Add changes in controlled batches:
- Keep a known-good Banov-only backup.
- Stop the server before changing the mod list.
- Add one gameplay or utility mod.
- Start the server and check logs, connection, spawning and persistence.
- Record the change and repeat only after the previous test succeeds.
If the server crashes or refuses to start, remove the most recently added mod and retest Banov alone. This isolates incompatibilities much faster than removing several packages at once. Some Workshop mods may be incompatible with Banov and can cause crashes or startup failures, so a working Banov-only test is an important reference point.
Updating Banov and preserving custom XML edits
Treat the map and mission as separate update surfaces
Update the Workshop map content and the mission package independently. A new Workshop version does not automatically mean that your customized mission files have been safely updated, and a new mission package may contain changes that are not present in your current map files.
Use a merge workflow instead of overwriting
Back up your active mission before every update. When a provider supplies a revised mission, it may create a folder such as empty.Banov_UPDATED. That folder is a staging copy: compare its XML files with your active empty.banov, carry forward your deliberate edits, then switch the active mission only after reviewing the differences.

Pay particular attention to types.xml, events.xml and any other files you changed for loot, vehicles, events or economy behavior. Copying an entire updated folder over the active one can silently discard those changes; copying only your old files can omit fixes required by the new release.

A DayZ update can break Banov until the map developer publishes a compatible release. After a DayZ patch, check for a Banov update and read the provider or map-author compatibility notes before changing unrelated settings. If the server worked before the patch and fails immediately afterward, treat version compatibility as a primary suspect.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The choice is mainly about control and maintenance responsibility, not a different Banov file format.

Choose self-hosting when you need direct control of SteamCMD, launch parameters and mission-file merges. Choose a panel when you prefer a guided Mod Manager and do not want to maintain the server software stack yourself. In either case, retain your own mission backups.
Post-install validation checklist
- The server uses the DayZ dedicated-server application, app ID
223350, rather than the client app ID. - The Banov Workshop content is present in the server’s mod location.

Keeping the server healthy after installation
Banov maintenance is mostly version and configuration discipline. Keep a dated backup before each change, record which Workshop and mission versions are active, and update one surface at a time. When a patch arrives, check Banov compatibility first. When a mod is added, test it alone against the known-good baseline. When an XML error appears, fix the exact file and line identified by the log rather than replacing unrelated settings.
If the server will not start, reduce it to the smallest known-good configuration: Banov Workshop files, the matching key, the empty.banov mission, the correct template and the @Banov launch entry. Once that combination starts and a client can join, restore custom XML changes and additional mods in controlled steps.
