How to Install and Configure the Vulcan Anti-Cheat Plugin

A practical guide to installing Vulcan Anti-Cheat with PacketEvents, locating its generated configuration, tuning checks and punishments, connecting Discord, and troubleshooting false positives.
Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To install Vulcan Anti-Cheat, run a supported Spigot, Paper, or compatible Paper fork, download Vulcan from its official Spigot listing, install the matching PacketEvents dependency, and place both JAR files in the server’s plugins folder. Vulcan will not start without PacketEvents. Folia is not supported.

After the first successful start, configure alerts, punishments, checks, and optional Discord notifications from Vulcan’s generated configuration. Start with the defaults, test on a staging server, and tune one check at a time. Vulcan can execute the commands you configure, but it does not count punishments or decide by itself how many kicks should precede a ban.

Check compatibility before you download anything

Vulcan is a server-side Minecraft anti-cheat plugin. It analyses player behaviour and network packets, raises alerts for staff, and can execute commands when configured thresholds are reached. Compatibility depends on the server software and the Minecraft build you are running, so verify the current Vulcan listing before deployment rather than relying on an old version matrix.

Supported server software

Server software Status Important qualification
Spigot Supported Use the version listed for your Vulcan build. Some Spigot forks may not be supported.
Paper Supported Paper is an officially documented target.
Paper forks Generally supported The guide explicitly covers forks of Paper, but individual forks can still introduce incompatibilities.
Pufferfish and Purpur Listed in product compatibility material Version support changes; confirm the current listing before buying or updating.
Folia Not supported The installation guide states that Vulcan does not currently support Folia.

Do not treat a generic claim such as “works on Spigot” as a guarantee for every fork, proxy arrangement, or Minecraft version. Record your exact server software, version, Java runtime, Vulcan build, and PacketEvents build before opening a support ticket.

PacketEvents is mandatory

PacketEvents gives Vulcan access to client packets used for detection. The Vulcan installation guide describes it as a required dependency and warns that the plugin will not work without it. Download the PacketEvents build intended for your server type and Minecraft version; installing Vulcan alone is not a complete installation.

Install Vulcan and PacketEvents

  1. Confirm the server type. Stop and identify whether the server is Spigot, Paper, or a supported Paper fork. If it is Folia, choose a different anti-cheat because Vulcan is not supported there.
  2. Obtain Vulcan from the official channel. Purchase and download Vulcan through its official Spigot listing. The Vulcan wiki identifies Spigot as the only official purchase location. Avoid re-uploaded JAR files because their provenance and version cannot be verified.
  3. Download PacketEvents. Select the PacketEvents release compatible with your server software and Minecraft version. Keep the downloaded filename and version available for troubleshooting.
  4. Stop the server completely. Do not replace plugin JARs while the server is still running. A clean shutdown prevents partially written files and stale classes from being loaded.
  5. Copy both JARs. Place PacketEvents.jar and Vulcan.jar in the server’s plugins directory. Do not put either file in a nested directory unless your server host specifically changes its plugin path.
  6. Start the server. Watch the console from the beginning of startup. PacketEvents should load, followed by Vulcan. A missing-dependency, incompatible-version, or unsupported-server message must be fixed before you allow players to join.
  7. Check generated files. After startup, inspect the Vulcan directory created under plugins. The generated configuration files and language or data files are the files you should edit; do not assume a downloaded sample is identical to your installed build.

What a healthy first start looks like

  • PacketEvents appears as an enabled plugin rather than a failed dependency.
  • Vulcan enables without a stack trace or “missing PacketEvents” error.
  • A Vulcan plugin directory and configuration file are created under the server’s plugin directory.
  • The server reaches its normal “done” state and accepts a test connection.

If Vulcan fails immediately, stop the server and read the first error rather than repeatedly restarting. The first dependency or compatibility error is usually more useful than later messages caused by the failed load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find and edit Vulcan’s configuration

On a normal server layout, the generated file is in Vulcan’s own directory inside plugins, commonly shown as plugins/Vulcan/config.yml. Folder names can differ by build, so use the directory created during the first successful startup as the authoritative location. Shut the server down before making broad edits, keep a backup of the working file, and preserve YAML indentation.

The official FAQ recommends starting with the default configuration. It describes the defaults as the best available general-purpose configuration, while noting that the best settings vary substantially between servers. Defaults are therefore a baseline for testing, not a promise that every network, minigame, or player population will behave identically.

Make a safe first configuration pass

  1. Copy the generated configuration to a dated backup.
  2. Read the complete file once so you know which sections control alerts, punishments, checks, and messages.
  3. Leave punishment actions conservative while you observe normal players and your server’s movement, combat, and connection patterns.
  4. Change one check or threshold at a time. Record the old value, new value, date, and reason.
  5. Reload only after validating YAML syntax and then watch the console for a reload error. If a reload does not apply cleanly, stop the server and restore the backup.

Configure alerts for staff

Alerts are the staff-facing layer: they show which player triggered which check and provide context for a moderator’s decision. Use the alert section to control formatting, visibility, and the messages sent to people with the appropriate permission. A useful alert should identify the player, check, violation information supplied by the build, and the action being considered without flooding chat.

Alert design decisions

  • Choose a readable format. Keep the player name and check name prominent. Avoid long decorative prefixes that push useful information off screen.
  • Limit recipients. Send alerts to trained moderators rather than every player. Confirm that your permissions plugin grants the intended staff permission.
  • Use alerts as evidence, not an automatic verdict. A single alert can be caused by lag, unusual hardware, a minigame mechanic, or a false positive. Require a pattern and human review before severe action.
  • Separate observation from punishment. During initial tuning, let staff see alerts while punishment commands remain disabled or harmless.

When you edit alert formatting, test it with a staff account and a non-staff account. Verify that ordinary players cannot see internal check names or moderation details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure punishments and thresholds

Vulcan can execute commands configured for a punishment action. Those commands might warn, kick, mute, freeze, or ban a player depending on the other plugins installed on your server. Vulcan does not count how many punishments have occurred. The official FAQ states that it simply executes whatever commands you configure.

Build a graduated response

  1. Start with alerts. Confirm that a check is producing useful, repeatable evidence for your server.
  2. Add a low-impact response. A warning, staff notification, or temporary intervention gives moderators time to inspect the player.
  3. Use thresholds carefully. Set a violation threshold only after observing normal latency, tick rate, and gameplay on your server.
  4. Reserve severe actions. Permanent bans should require strong evidence or a separate review path, especially for checks known to be sensitive to lag.
  5. Document every command. Verify the syntax, permissions, and target-player placeholder expected by the installed Vulcan version and by the plugin receiving the command.

Why “ban after X kicks” is not a Vulcan setting

Because Vulcan does not maintain a punishment counter, it cannot natively remember that a player has already been kicked several times and then convert the next event into a ban. If your policy is “ban after X kicks,” implement the counting in a punishment or moderation plugin, or build it through an API integration. Vulcan should trigger the configured command; the external system should own persistent counting, expiry rules, and appeal records.

Choose which checks are enabled

Checks are the individual detection modules. Enable only the checks that make sense for your server’s game modes and mechanics. A movement check can behave differently in a vanilla survival world, a parkour lobby, and a minigame that deliberately changes knockback or player speed.

Check-tuning workflow

  • List the mechanics that can legitimately resemble cheating: custom knockback, jump pads, vehicles, flight abilities, unusual teleportation, scripted combat, or administrator tools.
  • Disable or exempt the affected check while you confirm how the mechanic behaves.
  • Run controlled tests with a staff account and ordinary players across normal latency conditions.
  • Re-enable the check at its default threshold before making a small, documented adjustment.
  • Observe alerts for a meaningful period before adding an automatic punishment.

The public configuration examples expose commands such as /vulcan checks and /vulcan disablecheck <check>. Treat examples from community configurations as illustrations only; command names and syntax should be checked against the version installed on your server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up Discord alerts and optional API features

Discord webhooks

The official FAQ points to a separate illustrated Discord webhook guide. Follow that guide for the current webhook setup, then send a test alert before relying on it for moderation. Keep webhook URLs private: anyone who obtains one may be able to post into the connected channel.

Decide which events belong in Discord. A channel that receives every low-level alert can become unusable, while a channel for high-confidence alerts, punishments, and staff review can remain actionable. Limit access to moderators and retain enough context for an incident review.

API and addons

The API is optional developer functionality, not a separate plugin that Vulcan automatically installs. The documented route is to obtain it through the verified Discord API-and-addons channel and set enable-api: true in the configuration when your integration is ready. Test an integration on a staging server first and confirm that it does not issue duplicate or conflicting punishment commands.

Official and community verified addons become available after verification, but Vulcan support covers only official addons. If an unverified addon changes alerts, checks, or punishment behaviour, reproduce the problem without that addon before reporting it as a Vulcan issue.

Useful commands for administration

A public configuration example lists the following administrative commands. They are useful for inspection and controlled actions, but syntax can change between releases, so run /vulcan help on your own server first.

Command Typical purpose
/vulcan help Show commands available in the installed build.
/vulcan menu or /vulcan gui Open the administrative menu or GUI, when enabled by the build.
/vulcan profile <player> Inspect a player profile and related detection information.
/vulcan ban <player> Issue the Vulcan ban action if your account has permission.
/vulcan reload Reload configuration where supported; watch the console for errors.
/vulcan disablecheck <check> Temporarily disable one check during false-positive investigation.
/vulcan violations <player> Inspect recorded violations for a player.
/vulcan cps <player> Inspect clicks-per-second information where the check provides it.
/vulcan kb <player> Inspect knockback-related information.
/vulcan checks List checks and their status.
/vulcan connection <player> Inspect connection information relevant to troubleshooting.
/vulcan freeze <player> Freeze a player for a manual investigation when permitted.

Give these commands only to trusted staff. A command that can freeze, ban, or expose player data should not be available to ordinary moderators unless your procedures require it.

Handle false positives without losing evidence

Vulcan’s product disclaimer acknowledges that false positives and bypasses can occur. No anti-cheat should replace human moderation, especially when a punishment is permanent or affects a competitive event.

  1. Stop the immediate harm. Disable the affected check or remove its automatic punishment while you investigate. The documented administrative route includes /vulcan disablecheck <check>.
  2. Capture a reproducible case. Record the player’s actions, game mode, server tick behaviour if available, latency, client version, and the exact time of each alert.
  3. Collect a video and logs. The support process asks for a video, reproduction steps, and logs. Preserve the original files rather than relying on screenshots of a chat alert.
  4. Rule out server mechanics. Reproduce the behaviour without custom movement, knockback, teleportation, scripted abilities, or administrator tools that may resemble a violation.
  5. Report through the support channel. Join the Vulcan Discord, verify your account with purchase information, and open a ticket with the check name, versions, configuration changes, logs, and reproduction steps.
  6. Restore cautiously. After the cause is understood, re-enable the check with a conservative response and monitor it before restoring an aggressive punishment.

Do not publish a player’s private information in a public channel while collecting evidence. Share only what support needs and keep your staff’s incident records access-controlled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Vulcan without overwriting your tuning

Configuration files automatically add new options after updates, according to Vulcan documentation. That convenience does not remove the need to review the generated changes. A new check, threshold, message, or command option can alter behaviour even when your old settings remain intact.

  1. Read the release information and verify that the new build supports your exact server software and Minecraft version.
  2. Back up the entire server, including the Vulcan directory, PacketEvents JAR, Vulcan JAR, and current logs.
  3. Test the update on a staging copy with the same plugins and representative configuration.
  4. Stop the production server and replace the JARs together if both dependencies require an update.
  5. Start the server, inspect the console, and compare the regenerated configuration with your backup.
  6. Review every newly added option and retest alerts, commands, Discord delivery, and any API integration.

Never assume that a successful startup means your old settings still have the same practical effect. Recheck permissions and punishment commands after every major update.

Operate Vulcan safely on a live server

Use a staging server first

Clone the production configuration and plugin set, then test with staff accounts before enabling automatic bans. Include ordinary movement, combat, latency spikes, restarts, and the custom mechanics your players actually use. Staging is where you should discover a malformed command or noisy alert stream, not during a tournament.

Keep moderation in the loop

  • Define which alerts require a second moderator before punishment.
  • Keep an appeal path for players who believe an automated action was wrong.
  • Record the check, evidence, command, and moderator for significant punishments.
  • Review alert volume periodically; a flood of low-value alerts trains staff to ignore the system.

Plan for bypasses and outages

Attackers may bypass detections, and a plugin update or dependency failure may temporarily reduce coverage. Monitor startup logs after restarts, keep PacketEvents and Vulcan versions documented, and do not describe the anti-cheat as perfect protection. Human review and other server controls remain necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate Vulcan against another anti-cheat

If you are deciding between products, compare like-for-like conditions rather than relying on undated marketing claims. No independently attributable effectiveness or adoption statistic is established in the installation and configuration material, so treat performance claims that lack a dated method as unverified.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Server compatibility Does it support your exact Spigot, Paper fork, Minecraft version, and hosting setup? Is Folia supported?
Dependencies Does it require PacketEvents or another packet library, and are compatible builds available for your server?
Detection coverage Which movement, combat, clicking, connection, and other categories exist, and can individual checks be disabled?
Configuration Can you set alert formatting, thresholds, commands, messages, and check enablement without editing unsupported files?
Moderation integration Can alerts reach staff or Discord, and can punishment commands integrate with your existing moderation system?
Automation model Does the product count punishments itself, or does it only execute commands supplied by you?
API and addons Is an API optional, how is it obtained, and which addons are covered by official support?
False-positive process What evidence does support require, how are accounts verified, and can you temporarily disable a check?
Licensing and purchase Where is the official purchase channel, and are version updates and support tied to that purchase?

Troubleshooting common installation and configuration failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Vulcan refuses to enable PacketEvents is missing, failed, or incompatible. Install the matching PacketEvents build, restart, and read the first dependency error in the console.
No Vulcan folder appears The plugin never completed startup or the server is using a different plugin directory. Inspect startup errors and confirm the server’s actual plugins path.
Alerts never appear Alerts are disabled, permissions are missing, or no check has crossed its threshold. Test with a permitted staff account, run /vulcan checks, and verify alert settings before changing thresholds.
Players are punished too quickly An automatic command is too aggressive for the server’s latency or mechanics. Disable the affected check or punishment, collect evidence, and return to defaults while investigating.
Discord receives nothing The webhook is wrong, revoked, filtered, or not enabled for the selected events. Follow the official webhook guide, send a controlled test, and keep the webhook secret.
A reload reports errors Malformed YAML, an obsolete option, or unsupported command syntax. Restore the backup, validate indentation, compare the generated file with the installed version, and restart if necessary.
A community addon causes failures The addon is unverified or incompatible with the current build. Remove it temporarily and reproduce the issue with Vulcan and official addons only.

Recommended deployment sequence

  1. Verify server software and Minecraft version against the current Vulcan listing.
  2. Purchase Vulcan through the official Spigot listing and download the matching PacketEvents dependency.
  3. Install both JARs on a staging server and confirm a clean startup.
  4. Back up and inspect the generated configuration.
  5. Keep default checks and conservative actions while staff learn the alert format.
  6. Test alerts, permissions, commands, Discord delivery, and any API integration.
  7. Document legitimate server mechanics and disable or tune only the affected checks.
  8. Move to production with human review still required for severe punishments.
  9. After every update, review newly generated options and repeat the critical tests.
