What Tempest Protocol requires
Tempest Protocol is a GamerPotion RPG modpack for Minecraft 1.21.1 running on NeoForge. A server is not created from the ordinary client installation alone: the project provides separate server-pack releases containing the files needed for dedicated hosting.

The CurseForge project page states that the standard client is optimized around 4 GB of RAM, recommends 6–8 GB for clients, and says that an online server requires at least 8 GB. That server figure is the pack publisher’s minimum guidance, not a guarantee that every group will receive identical performance. Exploration, world generation and the number of simultaneous players can raise CPU, memory and storage load.

Use one exact release everywhere
Choose the release before downloading anything. The server and every client must use the same Minecraft version, NeoForge version and Tempest Protocol pack release. A player using a different pack build may receive missing-mod, registry or network-handshake errors even when the Minecraft version appears correct.

Archive sizes and available releases can change. Treat the release number shown on the download page as authoritative, and keep a copy of the exact ZIP used by the server so clients can reproduce it.

- Reserve at least 8 GB of RAM for the server process, following the pack publisher’s online-server guidance.
- Use fast, reliable storage with free capacity for the world, player data, logs and backups.
- Provide a stable wired or low-latency network connection when possible.
- Make the server’s chosen listening port reachable through the host firewall and, for a home server, the router.
- Keep administrative access separate from the address shared with ordinary players.
If a computer has only 8 GB of total physical memory, assigning all of it to Minecraft leaves the operating system and background services without headroom. A machine with additional memory is safer, but the pack’s stated server minimum remains 8 GB allocated to the server.
Choose self-hosting or a managed host
Self-hosting gives you direct access to files, logs, backups and operating-system settings. It also makes you responsible for Java and NeoForge compatibility, firewall rules, updates, backups, uptime and troubleshooting. A managed host trades some control and recurring cost for a control panel, automated provisioning and support.

Managed options listed for Tempest Protocol
The Tempest Protocol server-pack listings promote BisectHosting for one-click modpack installation, custom uploads, Forge/Fabric support and a control panel. Availability, plan limits and prices are subject to change, so check that the exact Tempest Protocol release is available before ordering.
CreeperHost maintains a dedicated Tempest Protocol hosting page. It says its setup determines which files a dedicated server needs, detects known client-only mods before they cause problems, and prepares the Minecraft, modloader and launch configuration automatically. That reduces manual filtering, but you should still verify the selected pack release and review the generated files.
WinterNode also maintains a dedicated Tempest Protocol page and advertises one-click installation. Confirm the version offered in the panel before creating the instance, then compare its RAM, CPU, storage, backup and location policies with your expected player count.

Download the client and server files
- Open the Tempest Protocol project on CurseForge and note the exact release you intend to run.
- Download the corresponding client pack for every player and the matching server-pack ZIP. Do not pair a 1.0.4 client with a 1.1.0 server, or vice versa.
- Store the ZIP and the release number in a clearly named archive folder. Do not overwrite an older server pack until you have a backup.
- Check that the server archive is the official ZIP for the selected release. The listed archives are approximately 13.2 MB for 1.0.4 and 13.5 MB for 1.1.0.
The public project listings do not print a universal Java runtime version or a universal launch command. Do not invent one from a different modpack. Use the README, launcher script and configuration files included in the downloaded server pack.
Install a self-hosted server
1. Create a clean server directory
Create a new directory dedicated to the selected Tempest Protocol release. Avoid placing it inside an existing vanilla, Forge or unrelated modpack server directory. A clean location prevents old mods, worlds and configuration files from being loaded accidentally.
2. Extract the server-pack ZIP
Extract the complete archive into that directory. Preserve its folder structure, scripts, libraries, configuration files and README. Do not copy only a mods folder into another installation: the pack may rely on additional server files and launch settings.
3. Read the included instructions before starting
Open the supplied README and inspect the launcher script. Follow the runtime and command specified there, including any first-run installer step. The exact Java requirement and launch syntax are pack-file details rather than facts reproduced on the public listing.
4. Start the supplied launcher
Run the included launcher from the server directory using the method appropriate to your operating system. Keep the console visible on the first launch. If the script creates libraries, a NeoForge installation or configuration files, let it finish before closing the process.
5. Accept the Minecraft EULA
If the first launch creates an EULA file and stops, open it, change the acceptance setting as required by Minecraft’s terms, save it, and start the supplied launcher again. Never bypass the EULA by deleting the file; the server needs a valid acceptance setting to continue.
6. Set an administrator operator
With the server running, use the console’s operator command for the intended administrator account. Enter the player name exactly as it appears in Minecraft. Operator access permits administrative commands, so grant it only to trusted accounts and remove it when no longer needed.

7. Configure server.properties
Stop the server cleanly before editing its configuration. Set the server name, difficulty, player limit, access controls, view-distance-related options and listening port to match your group. Keep a backup of the original file so you can restore a known-good configuration after an experiment.
8. Open the selected port
Allow the chosen port through the operating system firewall. For a home connection, forward that same port from the router to the machine running the server and give the machine a stable local address. Test from outside the home network rather than relying only on a connection from the host computer.
9. Perform a controlled first connection
Join with one client before inviting the whole group. Confirm that the player can authenticate, load into the world, interact with blocks and travel to a newly generated area. Watch the console for missing-mod, registry, authentication or tick-time errors while this test is running.
Deploy through a managed host
One-click installation
If the host’s modpack catalog lists Tempest Protocol, select the exact release and Minecraft 1.21.1/NeoForge combination shown in the panel. One-click installation normally creates the instance and launch configuration for you, but it does not remove the need to check the installed version, RAM allocation, server properties and backup settings.
Custom server-pack upload
When the catalog does not contain your chosen release, use the host’s custom-file or modpack-upload function if available. Upload the official server-pack ZIP or its extracted contents exactly as the provider’s instructions require. Do not upload only the client profile, and do not mix files from multiple releases.
Verify the instance after provisioning
- Confirm that the panel identifies Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge.
- Check that the Tempest Protocol release matches the clients.
- Review the generated startup command or launch profile without changing it blindly.
- Set the server name, access controls, operator account and port in the panel or configuration files.
- Make a backup before the first public session.
Allocate RAM and monitor performance
Start with at least 8 GB allocated to the server, which is the project’s stated online-server minimum. Allocation is not the same as total physical memory: the operating system, panel agent and backup process also need resources.
Measure the server while players perform the activities that matter to your group, especially exploration and new chunk generation. RPG, magic, dragon, quest and MineColonies content can increase CPU work, memory pressure and storage activity. Do not solve every slowdown by adding RAM; a CPU bottleneck, slow disk or overloaded network can remain unchanged.

What to watch
- Memory use: sustained pressure, frequent garbage collection or an operating system that begins swapping indicates insufficient headroom.
- Tick time: rising tick time during combat, automation or exploration means the server is not processing game logic quickly enough.
- World-generation load: lag concentrated in unexplored terrain points to chunk generation and storage pressure.
- Storage: monitor free space because the world, logs and backups grow over time.
- Network latency: compare local and remote tests to distinguish server performance from an individual player’s connection.
Increase resources gradually and record what changed. Keep the server version fixed while diagnosing a performance problem; changing the pack at the same time makes the cause harder to identify.

Connect players safely
- Give every player the same Tempest Protocol client release and NeoForge version used by the server.
- Have players launch the pack once locally so its files and configuration finish installing before they connect.
- Share the server address and port privately with the intended group.
- Ask one player to connect first and confirm that the server accepts the handshake.
- Enable a whitelist or equivalent access control if the server should not be public.
Do not mix client and server releases. If one player cannot join, first compare the displayed pack version, Minecraft version and NeoForge version character for character before changing server files.

The launcher exits immediately
Run the supplied launcher from its server directory so its relative paths resolve correctly. Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown message. Check the README for the required Java runtime and installation step; the public project page does not specify a universal runtime command.
The server reports a missing or client-only mod
Confirm that you extracted the official server pack rather than the client profile. Restore the server directory from a clean extraction and follow the pack’s included files. If using a managed host, use its Tempest Protocol installer or upload workflow instead of manually copying a client directory.
Players receive a version or registry mismatch
Compare the client release, Minecraft 1.21.1 version and NeoForge version with the server. Remove any extra mods from the client profile and reinstall the exact pack release if necessary. Never attempt to fix a mismatch by deleting random server mods.

The server is reachable locally but not remotely
Check that the process is listening on the intended port, the host firewall allows it, and a home router forwards the port to the correct machine. Test from a different network. If the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not provide a reachable public endpoint; a managed host or an appropriate tunneling solution may be required.
Players experience severe lag during exploration
Watch tick time, memory and disk activity while a player travels into unexplored terrain. Reduce the number of simultaneous explorers, allow generation to catch up, and verify that the machine has fast storage and sufficient CPU capacity. Increase RAM only when monitoring shows memory pressure; it will not correct every world-generation bottleneck.

A crash follows a configuration change
Stop the server, restore the last known-good configuration or backup, and change one setting at a time. Keep the crash log with the corresponding pack release so you can identify whether the failure is configuration-related or introduced by an update.
Backups, updates and routine administration
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. Back up the world, player data, server properties, pack-specific configuration and the exact server-pack ZIP. Store at least one copy outside the server machine or hosting instance. Test a restore periodically; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Update as a planned migration
When a new Tempest Protocol release is available, record the current version, take a complete backup and create a separate test instance. Install the new server pack into a clean directory, then test the world copy with one client on the matching release. Keep the old instance untouched until players can connect and the world behaves normally.
Maintain an operator record
- Record the server-pack release, Minecraft version and NeoForge version.
- Note RAM allocation, host location and the listening port.
- Keep administrator names and access changes documented.
- Review logs for repeated crashes, authentication failures and abnormal tick times.
- Remove old backups only after confirming that newer backups restore successfully.
How much capacity should you plan for?
The only published minimum in the project guidance is 8 GB of RAM for an online server. Player count, exploration style, automation and world size determine whether that is adequate in practice. Begin at the stated minimum, monitor a realistic session and scale the machine or plan when measurements show sustained memory, CPU, storage or network pressure.
As a current reference point, the CurseForge project page showed 71,943 total downloads in a 2026 snapshot, while CreeperHost’s Tempest Protocol page listed 289 mods. Both figures can change, and neither predicts the exact resource use of your world. Treat them as project scale indicators rather than performance guarantees.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Client and server use the same Tempest Protocol release.
- Both use Minecraft 1.21.1 and the matching NeoForge version.
- The official server-pack ZIP was extracted into a clean directory.
- The included README and launcher were followed instead of using an assumed command.
- The server has at least 8 GB allocated, with additional system headroom where possible.
- The EULA is accepted, an administrator is configured and server properties are saved.
- The firewall and router, if applicable, expose the selected port.
- A tested backup exists before inviting players.
- One remote client has completed a successful connection test.
The Bottom Line
For the least manual work, choose a managed host that explicitly lists the Tempest Protocol release you need and verify its RAM and backup terms. For maximum control, extract the matching server-pack ZIP yourself, follow its included launcher instructions and reserve at least 8 GB of RAM.
