To use a microSD card for Steam Deck games, insert the card, format it in SteamOS, then choose the card as the install location from the Storage screen. Formatting erases the card, so copy off any files you need first. Valve supports UHS-I microSD cards rated class 3 or better; faster UHS-II and UHS-III cards can work, but the Deck cannot use their higher transfer modes.
What the Steam Deck does with a microSD card
The Deck treats a formatted microSD card as another Steam library location. You can install new games there, move games between internal storage and the card, and remove or reinstall titles without changing your Steam account. The card is separate physical storage: taking it out makes the games stored on it unavailable until you insert it again.

SteamOS formats cards for its own storage workflow rather than leaving them as a typical camera or Windows card. Valve’s FAQ describes the Deck’s format as ext4 with casefolding. That statement appears in Valve’s Portuguese-Brazil FAQ and is presented here as an attributed translation, not as an English-language quotation. The practical consequence is that a card prepared by the Deck is intended for SteamOS; do not expect it to remain a plug-and-play game card for Windows, macOS, or another console.

Valve’s baseline is straightforward: use a reputable UHS-I microSD card rated class 3 or better. The OLED technical specifications list a slot supporting UHS-I and SD, SDHC, and SDXC formats. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to function in the slot, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds, so paying extra solely for those ratings does not unlock faster Deck transfers.

| Specification | What it means for a Deck | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Bus interface | UHS-I is the supported performance level. | Look for UHS-I in the card’s specifications. |
| Speed class | Class 3 or better meets Valve’s stated floor. | Confirm the card is marked C3, V30, or another rating that explicitly meets class 3; do not rely on capacity alone. |
| Capacity family | SDHC and SDXC are listed as supported formats on Valve’s OLED specification page. | Buy the capacity that fits your library and budget, and verify the seller and warranty. |
| Higher bus ratings | UHS-II and UHS-III may operate, but the Deck cannot use their higher transfer modes. | Do not pay a premium expecting UHS-II/III speeds on the Deck. |
| Authenticity | Counterfeit or failing cards can corrupt a library regardless of the printed rating. | Use a reputable source, retain proof of purchase, and test a new card before loading your entire library. |
No official comparison establishes a single best brand, model, capacity, price, or load-time advantage. Compare cards by verified authenticity, warranty, capacity, and price per usable gigabyte rather than by an unverified speed claim. A category search for “UHS-I microSD card for Steam Deck” is more useful than assuming any particular model is endorsed by Valve.
Back up the card before formatting
The Deck’s format operation initializes the card. It is not a conversion that preserves existing photographs, documents, ROM files, or another device’s game data. Before inserting a card you have used elsewhere, copy anything important to another drive or computer. If the card contains a previous Steam Deck library, treat the format as destructive unless you have a separate backup.
- Copy personal files and saves that are not synchronized elsewhere.
- Check that the backup opens from the destination before erasing the card.
- Do not interrupt the Deck, remove the card, or let it lose power while formatting.
- Have enough free internal storage available for the first setup and any game you may need to reinstall.
Format the microSD card in SteamOS
Steam’s documented Deck path is the safest way to prepare a new card:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- With the Deck on and at the SteamOS desktop or gaming interface, insert the microSD card fully into the slot until it is seated.
- Open the Steam menu and select Settings.
- Choose System, then select Format SD Card.
- Read the warning and confirm only after you have copied off files you need.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Valve notes that formatting can take a few minutes; do not remove the card during that time.
- After SteamOS returns to the settings screen, open Storage to confirm that the card appears with usable capacity.
If the format control is unavailable, SteamOS may not be detecting the card, the card may be write-protected through a faulty adapter or damaged hardware, or the system may need a restart. Follow the detection checks below instead of repeatedly confirming a format that has not completed.

Install a new game directly to the card
Once the card is formatted and visible, Steam uses the storage locations shown on the Storage screen. The exact confirmation wording can vary between SteamOS releases, but the destination-selection process is consistent:
- Open the game’s page in your Steam library and select Install.
- When Steam asks where to install, open the location selector rather than accepting the default internal drive.
- Choose the microSD library listed by its storage name, then review the required download size and available space.
- Confirm the installation and leave the Deck connected to power if the download is large.
- After installation, launch the game once. This lets Steam create its local configuration and gives you an immediate check that the card is readable.
If Steam silently chooses internal storage, stop the installation and change the default location in the Storage settings before trying again. A game’s download size, shader cache, compatibility data, and updates can use different amounts of space, so leave headroom instead of filling the card to its displayed maximum.
Move an installed game between internal storage and the card
Steam’s Storage manager is the central place to see both drives and manage an installed library. Menu labels for a move operation can change with SteamOS updates, so rely on the storage-location control presented for the selected game rather than on a fixed button name.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the internal drive or microSD card to view the games stored there.
- Mark the game you want to relocate.
- Use the available move or transfer action, select the other storage location, and confirm.
- Wait for Steam to finish copying before launching the game or removing the card.
Moving changes where the installed files live; it does not create a second independent copy. If there is not enough free space at the destination, Steam will refuse the operation or ask you to choose another location. Large games can take a long time to move because Steam must read every file from one device and write it to the other.

Manage space without breaking the library
Read the Storage screen correctly
The Storage screen separates internal and removable storage and shows installed games by location. Use it before downloading a large title to check the actual free space on the destination, not just the capacity printed on the card. System files, shader caches, compatibility data, downloadable content, and updates can consume space beyond the headline game size.
Uninstall only the local files
Uninstalling a game from Steam removes its local installation from the selected drive. Your ownership remains in the Steam account, and you can download the game again later. Cloud saves are a separate service and should not be assumed for every title; keep a manual backup for games that store important saves locally.
Keep free space for updates
A card that is technically full may fail an update even when the final game would fit. Steam can need temporary working space while patching, and some updates create a new copy of changed data before replacing old files. Keep a practical buffer and move or uninstall another title before starting a very large patch.
Use one card at a time when diagnosing a problem
If you rotate several cards, label them and insert only the one you are testing. This prevents installing a game on one card and then assuming it disappeared when a different card is inserted.

What to do when Steam says a card game is uninstalled
There are two different symptoms: the Deck may not detect the card at all, or the card may be visible while Steam labels games on it as uninstalled. Treat them separately.
The card is visible but games show “Install”
First, confirm that the correct card is inserted and that its library folder is still in the location Steam expects. Do not format the card as a first response; formatting would erase the files you are trying to recover.
Steam Support’s general article “Installed games are appearing as uninstalled” advises beginning an installation while the existing files remain in the proper location so the Steam client can recognize them. That is general Steam guidance, not a Deck-specific guarantee, and interface details may differ on SteamOS. If recognition does not occur, stop rather than allowing a fresh download to overwrite uncertain data; check the card’s free space, restart Steam, and verify that you are signed into the account that owns the games.

Use this sequence before considering a reformat:
- Shut down or restart the Deck and reinsert the card firmly. A partially seated card can appear intermittently.
- Check whether the card appears in Steam > Settings > Storage. If it appears there but games do not, use the library-recovery steps above.
- Power the Deck off, inspect the card and slot for dirt or physical damage, and try the card again after the system starts.
- If possible, test the card in another reader only to determine whether the card is readable; do not reformat it from that device.
- If SteamOS repeatedly asks to format a card that contains needed files, cancel the prompt and make a complete backup before taking any destructive action.
A card that disconnects under load, reports wildly incorrect capacity, or produces repeated file errors is more likely failing or counterfeit than merely misconfigured. Replace it with a verified card rather than trusting a library that cannot be read consistently.

Performance expectations and safe handling
Valve publishes compatibility specifications, not a universal load-time benchmark for every game and card. Game start times vary with the title, shader compilation, updates, and the card’s sustained performance. UHS-II or UHS-III markings do not change the Deck’s UHS-I limit.
- Keep the Deck connected to power during a large download, move, or update.
- Do not remove the card while a game is running, files are downloading, or Steam is moving a library.
- Exit the game and wait for downloads and disk activity to stop before ejecting or shutting down.
- Install system updates when convenient, because SteamOS storage behavior and labels can change between releases.
- Maintain a backup of irreplaceable saves and personal files; a Steam installation can be downloaded again, but unsynchronized saves may not be recoverable.
Plan capacity for the way you play
Choose capacity from your actual library rather than assuming the largest card is always best. A few large modern games can consume more space than dozens of smaller independent titles, and downloadable content plus updates increase the total over time. If you regularly switch between a small set of demanding games, a moderate card with room for patches may be easier to manage than a full card that constantly requires moves.
| Library pattern | Planning approach | Management habit |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating a few large games | Reserve space for each game’s updates and temporary patch data. | Move finished campaigns back to internal storage only when you need the card space. |
| Large mixed library | Prioritize verified capacity and price per usable gigabyte. | Use the Storage screen to sort decisions by actual installed size. |
| Many small games | Capacity is less likely to be the immediate limit, but shader and compatibility data still accumulate. | Review unused installations periodically and keep free space for updates. |
| Several interchangeable cards | Give each card a label and a written list of its installed games. | Insert the card containing a game before troubleshooting an apparent missing installation. |
When a reformat is the right answer
Reformat only after you have backed up needed files and ruled out a loose connection or a temporary SteamOS issue. A reformat is appropriate when you are intentionally repurposing a card, the existing filesystem is damaged and no files need to be recovered, or you want SteamOS to initialize a card that was prepared for another device. It is not an appropriate first step for a game that merely appears uninstalled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter reformatting, reinstall one small game first and launch it. This staged check confirms that the card can download, write, and read files before you commit a large library to it.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Format the card in SteamOS before using it for a Deck library; the operation erases existing contents.
- Use a reputable UHS-I, class 3 or better microSD card. Higher UHS-II/III transfer ratings are not utilized by the Deck.
- Choose the card in the install destination selector and manage moves from the Storage settings.
- Separate “card not detected” from “games marked uninstalled”; the recovery actions are different.
- When files remain on the card, Steam’s general recovery advice is to begin an installation so the client can attempt to recognize them, but this is not a guaranteed Deck-specific fix.
