How to Preserve and Display an Original Video Game Sketch Safely

The safest long-term plan is to display a high-quality reproduction and keep the original video game sketch protected from light. If you must put the original on the wall, use conservation-quality matting and backing, keep the glazing off the paper with a window mat or spacers, choose glass or acrylic for the actual medium, and place the frame away from sunlight and environmental swings. Light damage to paper and drawing media is cumulative and irreversible, so UV-filtering glazing reduces risk but does not make continuous display harmless.

Choose between displaying the original and displaying a reproduction

Paper is vulnerable even when a sketch appears clean and stable. Light can fade color, yellow or discolor paper, embrittle fibers, and alter media permanently. The National Archives and the Library of Congress therefore recommend a well-made reproduction for extended or permanent display. Store the authentic sheet in good archival conditions and let the copy carry the everyday viewing burden.

Display approach Preservation risk Access to the artifact Suitable duration What controls the decision
Reproduction on the wall; original stored Lowest light and handling exposure for the original You see an accurate image, not the original surface Appropriate for long-term display Quality of the reproduction and safe storage of the original
Original in a conservation frame Reduced, but never eliminated; light exposure remains cumulative Directly viewable Prefer short, controlled periods rather than permanent display Media stability, condition, glazing, mat, location, and a rotation plan
Original unframed or in a standard frame High risk from light, contact, acidic materials, pressure, and handling Directly viewable Not a safe preservation strategy Replace with a conservation system or a reproduction

A reproduction does not have to mean a casual scan. Use a carefully made photograph or scan, preserve the full sheet and margins, and keep the file in a lossless master format before making a print. The reproduction can be replaced if it fades or is damaged; the original cannot be restored after light-induced change.

Assess the sketch before buying a frame

Do not select a mount or glazing until you know what is on the sheet and whether the surface is secure. A concept drawing may combine graphite, ink, marker, colored pencil, pastel, charcoal, paint, correction media, or several layers. A dry-looking surface can still release powder, flake, offset, or react badly to static.

Identify the media and support

  • Look for loose particles, shiny or raised strokes, flaking, smudges, transfers to adjacent paper, and areas that appear friable.
  • Record whether the sheet is ordinary paper, heavy board, tracing paper, or another support. Do not perform a scratch, eraser, solvent, or moisture test on the artwork.
  • Note additions such as tape, staples, old hinges, pressure-sensitive labels, or inscriptions. Their presence changes what can be removed safely.
  • Photograph the front, back, edges, and any damage before moving it. This record helps a conservator or framer understand changes later.

Media identification is not cosmetic. The Library of Congress notes that collection staff adapt housing for the material; for friable charcoal or flaking paint, translucent paper may be preferable to polyester because it creates less static. An uncertain medium should be treated as potentially friable until a qualified professional examines it.

Decide whether the condition warrants professional advice

Arrange an assessment by a qualified paper conservator before cleaning, flattening, repairing, hinging, or framing if the sketch is valuable, fragile, flaking, stained, badly cockled, torn, mold-affected, or of unknown medium. Conservation framing is not the same as a routine retail frame job: the mount must be reversible, chemically stable, and appropriate to the sheet’s behavior.

Control the room before controlling the frame

Good framing cannot compensate for a bad location. Choose a stable interior wall where the work is not exposed to direct sun, intense lamps, fluorescent light, a fireplace, a radiator, a heating or cooling vent, or a door that causes repeated drafts. Switch display lights off when no one is viewing the work. Keep the frame out of attics and basements, where temperature and relative humidity commonly fluctuate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Light management

  • Use the lowest practical light level and the shortest viewing period.
  • Block direct daylight with blinds, curtains, or a location that never receives sun.
  • Do not assume a UV filter makes a bright room safe. Ultraviolet filtering addresses one part of the spectrum; visible light can also cause fading and chemical change.
  • Rotate the original out of display and substitute the reproduction when the room will be lit for long periods, events, or filming.

Official guidance does not establish one universal number of hours, lux, or a single relative-humidity target that is mandatory for every privately held sketch. The paper type, media, condition, frame, and building all matter. Aim for a steady, moderate environment rather than chasing a number while allowing large swings.

Humidity and temperature

Paper absorbs moisture. High relative humidity can make it swell, turn wavy or wrinkled, accelerate chemical degradation, and increase mold risk. Rapid changes can stress the sheet even when the average room feels comfortable. An archival enclosure can buffer brief changes, but it cannot correct a persistently damp, hot, or unstable room.

Select glazing for the actual drawing medium

Both glass and acrylic can work in a conservation frame. Specify UV-filtering or UV-opaque glazing, while remembering that no glazing removes all light risk. The medium determines whether static, weight, breakage, or cleaning is the dominant concern.

Glazing Advantages Risks or limits Use with a sketch when
UV-filtering glass Rigid, relatively scratch-resistant, and less prone to static Heavy and breakable; reflections remain unless a suitable surface is specified The frame can safely support its weight and the media are sensitive to static
Standard acrylic with UV protection Lightweight and less likely to shatter Can build static electricity, attract dust, and scratch more easily The drawing surface is stable and the framer confirms static will not threaten it
Anti-static acrylic with UV protection Retains acrylic’s light weight while reducing static concerns Still needs careful cleaning and professional selection; UV protection does not stop visible-light damage Pastel, charcoal, graphite powder, or another friable medium makes ordinary acrylic unsuitable

The Library of Congress identifies anti-static acrylic as an option for powdery media such as pastels, charcoal, and graphite pencil. If particles are loose, paint is flaking, or the medium is uncertain, have a conservator or experienced conservation framer choose the glazing rather than improvising with a kit frame.

Build a frame that keeps every layer off the paper

Use stable mat and backing materials

Specify cotton-rag or chemically purified pulp mat board that is buffered or otherwise pH-neutral/acid-free, together with a stable backing board. These materials reduce the migration of acids and other reactive compounds into the sheet. “Acid-free” on a package is not a substitute for a reputable conservation specification; ask the framer what the board is made of and whether it is intended for works on paper.

Create an air gap

The drawing must not touch the glazing. A window mat places a board opening above the sheet; spacers perform the same separation when a full image opening is required. This gap prevents abrasion, condensation-related sticking, and transfer of loose media to the glazing. It also lets the paper respond to modest environmental changes without being pinched against a hard surface.

Choose a reversible attachment

Do not put ordinary tape, self-adhesive corners, spray adhesive, glue, or pressure-sensitive labels on the original. Adhesives can stain, become brittle, and make later removal destructive. Conservation methods described by the National Archives include Japanese-paper hinges made with wheat-starch paste or methyl cellulose, and paper or inert-plastic corners that hold the sheet without adhesive. Those are procedures for trained hands; a valuable or fragile sketch should not be hinged or repaired as a do-it-yourself experiment.

A framer should attach the sheet lightly enough that it can expand and contract, support it across its surface, and avoid trapping a distorted sheet flat by force. Ask for a design that can be dismantled without cutting the artwork or scraping residue from it.

  1. Document the object. Photograph both sides, measure the sheet, note media and damage, and record any existing labels or attachments.
  2. Set the display objective. Decide whether the original is needed for a short exhibition, occasional viewing, or a long-term wall installation. Choose a reproduction for continuous display whenever possible.
  3. Stabilize the location. Select a wall away from sun, strong lamps, fireplaces, radiators, vents, damp areas, and major temperature or humidity swings.
  4. Tell the framer the media. Identify powdery, flaking, glossy, or unknown areas. Request advice on glass, standard acrylic, or anti-static acrylic rather than specifying a material blindly.
  5. Specify the frame package. Request conservation mat and backing, a window mat or spacers, UV-filtering glazing, and no direct adhesive contact with the sheet.
  6. Approve the mount before assembly. Confirm how the sheet is held, where hinges or corners touch, and whether the method is reversible. For fragile work, let a conservator select or perform the mount.
  7. Inspect the closed frame. Check that the glazing does not touch the paper, no media has transferred to it, the sheet is not buckled by pressure, and the back is sealed against dust without making the package airtight or stressed.
  8. Install securely. Use hardware rated for the complete frame weight, keep it level, and avoid a location where vibration, impact, or frequent moving is likely.

Store the original when it is not being viewed

When the reproduction is on the wall, protect the authentic sketch from light and physical contact in an appropriately sized archival folder or enclosure. Support it flat where practical, with enough room that the edges are not forced to curl. Select the enclosure material with the medium and condition in mind; a friable surface may need a non-static interleaf chosen by a conservator rather than a generic plastic sleeve.

  • Keep the folder in a clean, dark, stable interior space, not an attic, basement, garage, or area beside plumbing or heating equipment.
  • Do not stack heavy objects on the sketch or allow folders to slump and bend it.
  • Keep food, drinks, plants, and damp cleaning equipment away from the storage area.
  • Do not seal a visibly damp or moldy sheet into an enclosure. Isolate it from other paper and obtain professional advice.

Archival folders and framing can moderate brief humidity changes, but they cannot make a persistently poor environment safe. Because the sources do not establish one universal humidity target for every privately held work, prioritize stability and inspection over a single “perfect” reading.

Wash and dry your hands, clear a large clean surface, and remove jewelry or anything that can catch an edge. Support the sheet fully from below with both hands or a rigid, clean support board; never lift it by one corner or by an old tape tab. Keep the paper horizontal while moving it, and do not slide it across a table, mat, or glazing.

For transport, place the sketch between suitable rigid supports inside a folder or box, prevent shifting without pressing the surface, and avoid leaving it in a hot or cold vehicle. Carry a framed original with two hands, keep it upright when the frame design requires that orientation, and protect the glazing from knocks. If the frame is large or heavy, use two people and inspect the wall hardware before hanging.

Know when a conservator should take over

Seek a qualified paper conservator before treatment or framing when any of these conditions apply:

  • Charcoal, pastel, graphite powder, flaking paint, or other loose material is visible.
  • The paper is torn, brittle, deeply creased, wavy, mold-stained, water-damaged, or stuck to another surface.
  • The medium, paper type, inks, or history are unknown.
  • The sketch has significant monetary, historical, or personal value.
  • Old tape, adhesive, pressure-sensitive corners, or labels need removal.
  • You are considering washing, erasing, flattening, spraying, varnishing, or repairing it.

A conservator can identify the media, assess whether particles are mobile, select a low-static interleaf or glazing, and design a mount that can be reversed. A conservation framer can implement that specification; a conventional frame package is not an equivalent substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect and rotate the display

At each viewing or cleaning session, inspect the frame without opening it. Look for new fading, paper yellowing, cockling, corner movement, condensation, dust trapped against the glazing, or particles that have fallen from the drawing. If you see a change, remove the original from display and keep it protected while obtaining advice.

Clean the glazing according to its material, never by spraying liquid toward the frame edges. Apply cleaner to a cloth away from the artwork, and follow the glazing manufacturer’s instructions. Do not open the package merely to dust the paper. Schedule periodic rotation to the stored original and use the reproduction for ordinary viewing; the shorter the cumulative light exposure, the lower the irreversible risk.

Common mistakes and the safer correction

Mistake Why it causes trouble Safer correction
Leaving the original in a sunny window Direct and intense light accelerates irreversible fading and paper deterioration Move it to a shaded interior wall or display a reproduction
Assuming UV glass makes permanent display harmless Visible light still damages paper and media, and exposure is cumulative Reduce intensity and duration; rotate the original out
Allowing glazing to touch the drawing Media can transfer, abrade, or stick when conditions change Use a window mat or spacers to create separation
Using ordinary tape or adhesive corners Adhesives can stain, embrittle, and make removal destructive Use a reversible conservation mount selected for the sheet
Putting pastel or charcoal behind ordinary acrylic Static can attract or dislodge powdery media Ask about anti-static acrylic or another low-static glazing system
Flattening a wavy sheet yourself Moisture, pressure, or heat can cause permanent distortion or media loss Have a paper conservator assess it first
Storing the folder in an attic or basement Temperature and humidity swings increase distortion, degradation, and mold risk Use a stable, clean interior storage area

A practical decision checklist

  • Can a faithful reproduction meet the display goal? If yes, display the copy and store the original.
  • Is the medium and condition documented? If not, avoid testing and ask a conservator.
  • Will the location avoid direct sun, intense light, heat sources, vents, and environmental swings?
  • Does the frame specification include stable acid-free or pH-neutral mat and backing, UV-filtering glazing, and a window mat or spacers?
  • Is the glazing appropriate to the media, including static concerns for pastel, charcoal, or powdery graphite?
  • Will the mount avoid ordinary adhesive contact and remain reversible?
  • Is there a dark, stable archival enclosure for periods when the original is not displayed?
  • Is there a rotation and inspection plan so the original is not left under light indefinitely?

The Library of Congress summarizes the central choice plainly: “The best alternative to long-term display is to keep valuable paper collections in good storage conditions and to mat and frame a well made reproduction.” For an irreplaceable game concept sketch, that approach preserves both the artifact and the ability to enjoy its image every day.
