For GTA V on Windows, the documented OpenIV workflow is: configure OpenIV to your game installation, install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI from Tools > ASI Manager, create a lowercase mods folder beside the game executable, and edit copies of archives at the same relative paths. This keeps the original archives untouched and gives you a straightforward rollback. Use the procedure for Story Mode only, and verify the game edition, build, and every mod’s requirements before installing anything.
What OpenIV does—and what it does not do
OpenIV is a Windows utility for browsing and modifying supported Grand Theft Auto V files. Its documented GTA V method uses a separate root-level mods folder. OpenIV.ASI redirects the game to that folder when modified archives are present, while the untouched archives remain in the original installation.

That archive workflow is not a universal installer for every mod. Some modifications replace files inside an .rpf archive, some copy loose files into a specific directory, and others install script plugins. Read the individual mod’s instructions and check its target edition and game build before choosing a destination.

Before you install: edition, build and prerequisites
Confirm whether you have Legacy or Enhanced
On PC, GTA V is available in Legacy and Enhanced editions. They use different builds, and a mod made for one edition should not be assumed to work in the other. OpenIV’s official mods-folder instructions explain the archive-redirection process but do not establish complete Enhanced support. Before downloading a tool or mod, check the current page maintained by that tool or mod author for the exact edition.
- Open the launcher you normally use and identify the installed GTA V edition.
- Locate the directory containing the game executable and record it; OpenIV must be pointed at this installation.
- Write down the current game build shown by the launcher, executable properties, or the tool’s own documentation if available.
- Check that the mod explicitly names your edition and build range.
A game update can make a previously working loader or script unusable. Treat compatibility information as time-sensitive rather than as a permanent guarantee.
Install only on a clean, working Story Mode installation
Launch the unmodified game once and confirm that Story Mode works before adding files. If the installation already contains another loader, an old script library, or manually edited archives, document or remove those changes first. Mixing unknown versions makes a later crash difficult to diagnose.

Install OpenIV and point it to GTA V
- Install OpenIV using its current Windows installer.
- Start OpenIV and choose GTA V when prompted for a game.
- Browse to the directory that contains your GTA V installation and select it. If you have more than one copy, check the launcher and executable so you select the edition you actually run.
- Allow OpenIV to finish its first-time setup, then open the GTA V file view. If it opens a different installation, use the application’s game-selection or path settings to correct it before installing any mod.
OpenIV’s official guide is dated June 20, 2022, so its menu names may vary slightly in later builds. The important result is that OpenIV is operating on the same GTA V directory that your launcher starts.

Install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI with ASI Manager
For the documented mods-folder workflow, use OpenIV’s built-in manager rather than copying these components from an unrelated package.
- In OpenIV, open Tools > ASI Manager.
- Install ASI Loader.
- Install OpenIV.ASI.
- Close the manager and restart OpenIV if it asks you to do so.
ASI Manager can install, update, and uninstall the two components. Their jobs are different:
| Component | Purpose | Needed for the archive-redirection method? |
|---|---|---|
| OpenIV | Browses and edits supported GTA V files. | Yes, for making the archive copy and edits. |
| ASI Loader | Loads files that use the .asi plugin format. |
Yes, to load OpenIV.ASI. |
| OpenIV.ASI | Redirects supported game-file lookups to the root-level mods folder. |
Yes. |
| Script Hook V | Exposes GTA V native script functions to custom ASI plugins. | Only when a particular script mod requires it; it is separate from OpenIV.ASI. |
Installing Script Hook V does not replace OpenIV.ASI, and installing OpenIV.ASI does not provide Script Hook V’s scripting functions. A mod may need one, both, or neither.
Create the GTA V mods folder
- In File Explorer, open the GTA V root directory—the same directory configured in OpenIV.
- Create a new folder named exactly
mods. Use lowercase letters, with no spaces or extra characters. - Return to OpenIV and refresh or reopen the GTA V file view if the folder is not immediately visible.
The folder belongs beside the game’s normal directories and archives, not inside a user-document folder and not inside OpenIV’s program directory. The name and location matter because OpenIV.ASI looks for this specific redirection path.
Copy an archive before editing it
Never make the first edit in the original archive. Copy the archive into mods while preserving its complete relative path from the game root.

- In OpenIV, find the archive named in the mod’s instructions.
- Create the same directory structure under
mods. - Copy the archive, rather than moving it, into that matching location.
- Open and edit the copy under
mods. - Save the changed file and leave the original archive untouched.
For example, if a mod tells you to edit GTAVsomefolderexample.rpf, the working copy should be GTAVmodssomefolderexample.rpf. Do not flatten the folder structure or rename the archive unless the mod author specifically tells you to.

Install an individual mod using the right method
Use the mod’s current instructions as the authority for its files. OpenIV’s archive method is appropriate when the author identifies an archive and an internal path. It is not automatically correct for loose files or script plugins.
| Mod format | Typical action | Checks before launch |
|---|---|---|
| Archive edit | Copy the named .rpf archive to the identical path under mods, then edit that copy in OpenIV. |
Correct edition, archive path, required add-on files, and whether the archive must be rebuilt or saved in a specific mode. |
| Loose replacement files | Copy files to the exact relative location specified by the author, normally within the modded tree. | Do not overwrite originals unless the instructions explicitly require it; preserve a record of every added file. |
| ASI or script plugin | Install the required loader and any separate script library, then place the plugin where the author specifies. | Supported game build, required dependencies, plugin version, and Story Mode-only operation. |
| Dedicated installer | Run the installer only after confirming its edition and destination; choose the GTA V directory configured in OpenIV. | Read every destination prompt and avoid installing into a second GTA V copy. |
Install one mod at a time and launch Story Mode after each significant change. That creates a known checkpoint: if the game stops loading, the most recent change is the first thing to undo.
When a mod requires Script Hook V
Script Hook V is a separate library by Alexander Blade. It exposes native GTA V script functions to custom ASI plugins; it does not perform OpenIV archive redirection. Install it only when the mod’s instructions require it, and use the author’s current build.
The author page listed version v3889.0 / 1158.13, supporting patches 1.0.3889.0 / 1.0.1158.13, and a release date of July 15, 2026 when checked. Those figures are time-sensitive. Re-check the author page after every GTA V update instead of assuming this version remains compatible.

Script Hook V’s author states that it does not work in GTA Online and closes the game when the player enters multiplayer. A plugin that depends on it therefore belongs in a Story Mode setup only.
Test the installation safely
- Close OpenIV and the launcher completely.
- Start GTA V normally and enter Story Mode, not Online.
- Test the mod’s documented feature in a low-risk save or a new session.
- Watch for missing textures, infinite loading, script errors, unusual performance problems, or a crash before the main menu.
- Quit the game before changing files again.
Do not test a new plugin by joining multiplayer. If you need Online, disable the modded components first and verify that the unmodified game launches.
Common problems and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OpenIV cannot find GTA V | The wrong edition or directory was selected. | Use the launcher to locate the active installation, then correct OpenIV’s configured game path. |
| The mod has no effect | The archive was edited outside mods, the relative path is wrong, or OpenIV.ASI is not installed. |
Confirm the lowercase root-level folder, compare every directory name with the original path, and check Tools > ASI Manager. |
| The game crashes before Story Mode | Build mismatch, conflicting plugin, damaged archive, or an incorrect file destination. | Remove the most recently added file, check the mod’s supported build, and test with only the known-working setup. |
| A script reports a missing native or fails silently | Script Hook V or the plugin is for a different game patch. | Compare the installed build with the current Script Hook V and mod-author requirements. |
| OpenIV edits the wrong copy | The original archive was opened instead of its mirror under mods. |
Close without saving, navigate to the matching path under mods, and make the change there. |
| Online will not start after modding | ASI files or modified archives are still active. | Exit the game, disable the mod components, and restore a verified unmodified setup before launching Online. |
A crash after a game update is not proof that OpenIV itself is broken. First check whether the game build changed and whether the mod, loader, and script library have matching releases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to disable mods and roll back
OpenIV’s documented workflow leaves the original archives unchanged. To return to those originals, remove OpenIV.ASI through Tools > ASI Manager. Without OpenIV.ASI, the game no longer receives the redirected archive copies from mods. If you also uninstall ASI Loader, the ASI plugins it loads are disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Exit GTA V and its launcher.
- Open OpenIV and select Tools > ASI Manager.
- Uninstall OpenIV.ASI to stop the
mods-folder redirection. - If script plugins remain, uninstall ASI Loader or remove those plugins according to their own instructions.
- Launch Story Mode and confirm the original behavior before attempting Online.
When removing one mod rather than everything, follow its uninstall instructions and delete only files it added. Keep a simple text list of changed archives and added plugins so you can reverse a partial installation without guessing.

Backups: what the mods folder protects and what it does not
With the documented setup, the original archives remain in place, so a separate backup is not a prerequisite. An additional copy of the game files can still protect against accidental deletion, a failed manual edit, or a launcher repair that changes your installation.
- At minimum, retain the original archives and do not edit them directly.
- Record the game edition, build, loader versions, and mod list.
- Keep copies of configuration files and save-game data separately if a mod author says they are changed.
- Before a large batch of changes, make an optional external backup of the files you intend to alter.
An external drive is optional protection, not a requirement of OpenIV’s workflow. Do not confuse a backup of modded files with a clean installation for Online; disabling or removing the loaders and verifying the original files is still necessary.
GTA V Legacy versus Enhanced: a compatibility decision
| Question | Legacy | Enhanced |
|---|---|---|
| Which mod should you download? | One explicitly targeting your Legacy build. | One explicitly targeting your Enhanced build. |
| Can a mod be transferred between editions? | Do not assume it can. | Do not assume it can. |
| Is OpenIV.ASI support settled by the official instructions? | The documented mods-folder workflow applies to the supported setup described by OpenIV. | Official documentation consulted here does not establish complete support; verify current tool documentation before proceeding. |
| What must be rechecked after an update? | Game build, OpenIV components, Script Hook V, and each mod. | Game build, edition-specific tool support, Script Hook V if used, and each mod. |
Community guides may describe different tools or claim that a component does not work on Enhanced, but those claims can change and are not a substitute for the current documentation from the tool and mod authors. Treat Enhanced compatibility as unresolved until the relevant current pages confirm it.
Rockstar’s position on Online play and mod use
Rockstar Support’s page on single-player or Story Mode mods was last updated September 15, 2026. It links to the Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement, and Mod Guidelines. Those guidelines limit multiplayer modifications to Rockstar’s officially licensed creator platform or a direct license and place restrictions on monetization and third-party advertising associated with mods.
Rockstar Support also identifies modding online games as a potential Terms of Service violation that can lead to account action. The policy page is not a blanket guarantee that every single-player modification is permitted or risk-free; it is an index to the governing documents. Read the current terms for your account and region.
Rockstar’s June 15, 2015 Newswire warning said: “any attempt to tamper with the behavior of GTA Online by installing or executing mods, scripts, or other exploits, modifying the game files or manipulating the game in any way while it is executing will result in disciplinary action including but not limited to time in the cheater pool, bans and potential suspension of your account.” That is historical policy context, not a replacement for the current support guidance.
The practical rule is simple: use OpenIV mods in Story Mode, keep Online launches separate, and disable loaders and plugins before entering multiplayer.
A maintenance routine that prevents most breakage
- Before installing, confirm the edition and build shown by your current game.
- Read the mod’s dependencies and removal steps in full.
- Install one change at a time and test Story Mode.
- Keep all archive edits under the matching path in
mods. - Maintain a list of installed plugins, versions, and dates.
- After a game update, pause mod use until every loader and mod author confirms compatibility.
- Never launch GTA Online with modded archives, ASI Loader, OpenIV.ASI, or script plugins active.
This process gives you a clean point to return to, makes conflicts identifiable, and avoids treating a mod written for another edition or build as if it were a universal GTA V add-on.
