There is no confirmed, universal fix specifically for Deadlock stuttering during reload animations. The useful approach is to identify exactly when the hitch occurs, then compare one variable at a time: overlays, rendering settings, game mode, and whether the effect is being seen for the first time. Valve has made shader-preloading and client-performance changes, but those notes do not prove that every current reload hitch is shader-related or solved on every PC.
What reload-animation stuttering can indicate
A reload hitch is a timing clue, not a diagnosis. The same visible symptom can come from different conditions:

| Pattern | What it may help you test | Evidence quality |
|---|---|---|
| Every reload, in every match | Compare overlays, graphics settings and whether the issue also appears in bot matches or Explore NYC. | Diagnostic pattern only; no single cause is established. |
| First time a particular ability or visual effect appears | Check for an effect or shader-compilation hitch that becomes less frequent after the asset has been encountered. | One Windows 11 player report, not a general diagnosis. |
| Only live matches | Compare a bot match and Explore NYC to separate game-mode or online-session factors from a local rendering problem. | Useful isolation step; not proof of a network cause. |
| Only with an overlay enabled | Disable one overlay and repeat the same scenario. | One player reported improvement after disabling Discord overlay; this is not an official guarantee. |
| Begins after playing for a while | Record whether it is tied to a particular map, effect, update, temperature or background application. | Requires a reproducible report; no controlled benchmark establishes a universal trigger. |
Do not assume that the word “reload” means the reload animation itself is defective. The hitch can coincide with an effect, an overlay hook, a rendering-path change or a system-specific workload that happens at the same moment.
Also separate an FPS drop from a brief frame-time spike in your notes. A short freeze may feel severe even when an average-FPS counter changes only briefly. Record what you actually observe: a single hitch, repeated uneven frames, a sustained lower frame rate, or a complete freeze. “FPS drops,” “frametime stutters” and “stuttering” are all useful descriptions, but the timing and duration make the report actionable.

What Valve has changed—and what that does not prove
Valve’s Deadlock Map Rework Update, published February 25, 2025, lists client-performance work and says: “Improve how we preload units to prevent shader compilation during gameplay.” That is evidence of an effort to reduce shader-related hitches during play. It is not a numerical performance guarantee, and it does not establish that every reload-animation drop on every PC is caused by shader compilation.
The wording matters. The note describes an engineering change, not a promise that every shader is preloaded in every situation. A reload may occur at the same time as a newly encountered unit, ability, particle effect or other visual asset. Conversely, a hitch that happens on every reload after the same assets have already appeared may point away from a one-time compilation event. Only a controlled comparison can distinguish those patterns.
A separate forum report described freezes when abilities were seen for the first time, with the problem becoming less frequent as those effects were encountered. The same player said clearing the AMD driver cache and verifying game files did not prevent every later shader hitch. Treat that account as a lead for testing first-exposure behavior, not as proof that clearing a cache or verifying files will solve your problem.

Step 1: Record the exact reproduction pattern
Before changing settings, make a short note of the conditions. A useful report is more valuable than a list of random tweaks.
- Does the hitch happen on every reload or only occasionally?
- Does it occur when a specific hero ability, particle effect or animation is first seen?
- Does it happen in the first game after launching Deadlock, or also in later games?
- Is it present in a live match, a bot match, Explore NYC, or all three?
- Does the frame-time spike occur with an overlay enabled?
- Does another game show a similar hitch at the same time?
- Does the event last for one frame, several frames, or long enough to interrupt control?
- Does repeating the same reload immediately produce the same severity?
Use the same weapon, map area and sequence where possible. If you cannot reproduce the event consistently, write down what you were doing immediately before it happened rather than changing several settings at once.
A simple log can use one row per attempt: date, game build, mode, location, weapon or ability, first exposure or repeat exposure, overlay state, graphics API, resolution, and the result. Mark each run as “no hitch,” “brief hitch,” or “severe hitch.” This avoids relying on memory and makes a later forum post much clearer.
Do not compare a crowded live fight with an empty test area and call the result a settings comparison. Keep the context as similar as possible. If the test must use different modes, state that limitation explicitly.

Disable Discord overlay for one controlled test
A player in the official forums reported better performance after disabling the Discord overlay. That report is anecdotal, but disabling an overlay is reversible and makes a useful comparison if you use it.
- Close the game or return to a safe menu.
- Disable the Discord in-game overlay in Discord’s game-overlay settings.
- Launch Deadlock and repeat the same reload sequence in the same type of session.
- Record whether the hitch’s timing or severity changed.
- Restore the overlay if there is no difference, or test another overlay separately rather than disabling everything at once.
Do not treat an improvement in one configuration as proof that Discord is the root cause. Overlay behavior can vary by game build, driver and system. If you use more than one overlay, test them separately: disabling Discord and a second overlay together cannot tell you which change mattered.

Keep the overlay state in every screenshot, video or report. An apparent fix that works only while a particular overlay is disabled is still useful, but it should be labeled as a workaround for that configuration rather than a Deadlock-wide solution.
Step 3: Test game modes to separate local and session-specific behavior
- Reproduce the reload in a bot match, using the same graphics settings.
- Repeat it in Explore NYC if the same action and effect can be observed there.
- Compare those results with a live match.
- Run the comparison after a fresh launch and, if possible, again in a later game.
If the hitch appears in every mode, focus first on local rendering, overlays and hardware/software details. If it appears only in live matches, record that distinction in a report; it narrows the investigation but does not by itself prove that network conditions are responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Explore NYC reproduces the exact animation without the hitch, do not conclude that the live match is “fixed.” The sessions may differ in unit count, effects and timing. The useful conclusion is narrower: the symptom did not reproduce under that controlled context. Likewise, a bot-match hitch demonstrates that a live server is not required for that reproduction, but it does not identify the underlying component.
Step 4: Change one graphics variable at a time
Graphics API and configuration changes can produce opposite results on different systems. In one forum discussion, a player said trying Vulkan made the stutter worse. Therefore, do not prescribe Vulkan, another API, a launch option or a console command as a guaranteed fix.
- Write down the current rendering API, resolution and graphics settings.
- Change one setting only—for example, a lower resolution or a different available rendering option.
- Restart the game if the setting requires it.
- Repeat the identical reload test and note frame-time behavior.
- Revert the setting immediately if performance worsens, then test a different single variable only if you have a reproducible reason.
A controlled comparison tells you whether that configuration affects your PC. It does not establish a best setting for all Deadlock players.
Changing resolution can help determine whether the symptom follows rendering load, but it is not a prescription to play permanently at a lower resolution. If the hitch is identical at two resolutions, note that result and move to another comparison. If a different API worsens the problem, return to the original API and retain that observation for the report.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not combine a resolution change, API change, driver update and overlay change in one restart. Even if the result improves, you will not know which variable was responsible, and reproducing the result later becomes difficult.
Step 5: Check whether the symptom is a first-exposure hitch
Some reports describe a freeze when an ability or visual effect appears for the first time, followed by fewer incidents after the effect has been encountered. To test that pattern:
- Start a fresh session and note whether the first encounter with a particular effect causes the spike.
- Repeat the same effect later in the session.
- Record whether the hitch is absent, smaller or unchanged on subsequent encounters.
- Repeat with another effect if possible, without changing other settings.
If only first exposure is affected, include that detail in your report. It is consistent with an asset or shader-loading investigation, but it still does not prove that every reload animation is triggering shader compilation.

Do not call the test successful merely because the second attempt feels smoother once. Repeat the sequence when possible, because a first encounter may also coincide with a particular fight, camera angle or background activity. The strongest observation is a repeatable difference between a fresh session and later encounters under otherwise similar conditions.
Clearing a driver cache or verifying files should not be presented as a guaranteed answer. The cited player reported that those actions did not prevent every later shader hitch. If you try either step on your own, document it as a comparison and avoid claiming that it proves a shader diagnosis.
Step 6: Check the scope beyond Deadlock
- Test another game that uses a similar display mode and refresh rate.
- Note whether the hitch occurs only in Deadlock or in several applications.
- Record whether it starts after a driver, game or operating-system update.
- Keep the overlay state and graphics settings documented for each comparison.
- Note whether the problem is limited to one monitor, display mode or session.
A Deadlock-only problem points the investigation toward the game, its rendering path or an interaction with an overlay. A problem across several games warrants a broader system investigation, but the available reports do not establish a particular hardware replacement or operating-system change as a remedy.
This scope check is useful even when the other game does not reproduce the exact reload. You are looking for a comparable hitch under similar display conditions, not an identical animation. A negative result—smooth performance elsewhere—helps show that the issue may be specific to Deadlock or its interaction with the current configuration.
Step 7: Make the test repeatable and preserve a baseline
Once you have a sequence that reliably exposes the hitch, stop changing unrelated settings. Save the baseline first: the original API, resolution, overlay state, mode and the observed result. Then make one change and run the same sequence again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use the same map area, weapon and reload whenever practical.
- Run a fresh-launch attempt and a later-session attempt.
- Write down whether the effect is a first exposure or a repeat.
- Record the order of every change, including restoring a previous setting.
- Keep a short video only if it demonstrates the timing clearly; explain what the video does and does not show.
A video cannot identify a cause by itself, and an on-screen FPS counter may miss a very brief frame-time spike. Pair any clip with the written conditions. If the behavior changes from one run to the next, report that variability instead of selecting only the best-looking result.
What not to do
- Do not change global file permissions to chase a frame drop.
- Do not uninstall operating-system updates solely because a reload hitch appeared.
- Do not rely on undocumented launch options or console commands as standard fixes.
- Do not keep several experimental settings enabled and then assume the last change caused an improvement.
- Do not present an individual forum workaround as an official Deadlock solution.
- Do not replace hardware or buy a peripheral solely because one reload sequence stutters.
- Do not publish diagnostic files containing personal information when a developer asks for private submission.
These steps are not established as safe, broadly effective fixes by the available reports. They can also make later troubleshooting harder by changing several variables at once. There is no supported basis here for recommending a particular GPU, CPU, cooling product or repair item.
Collect the details needed for a useful bug report
For persistent stuttering, include enough information for another person to reproduce the test:
- Deadlock game build or update in use.
- Operating-system version.
- CPU and GPU models.
- Current graphics API, resolution and relevant graphics settings.
- Whether Discord or another in-game overlay was enabled.
- The exact action that triggers the hitch, such as every reload or a first-time ability effect.
- Whether it happens in live matches, bot matches and Explore NYC.
- Whether other games show the same behavior.
- Which one-variable comparisons you made and what changed.
- Whether the issue appeared after an update or after playing for a period of time.
- Whether repeating the same effect later reduced, removed or failed to change the hitch.
In a February 18, 2026 forum reply, Valve developer JasperP asked a player: “Can you take a PerfView trace to help us isolate the issue?” The same reply requested the operating system, CPU and GPU. If current forum guidance asks for a trace, follow that guidance and send diagnostic files privately when requested rather than posting potentially sensitive files publicly. The request is diagnostic context, not a claim that every player needs to run PerfView.

The relevant discussion is the Deadlock Official Forums thread on frametime stuttering after the Old Gods update. It uses player language such as “FPS drops” and “frametime stutters,” which can help you describe the symptom precisely.
A concise report can follow this order: symptom and trigger; exact mode and location; whether it is first exposure; baseline settings; overlay state; comparison performed; result; system specifications; and any requested trace. State what did not help, too. For example, saying that a cache clear and file verification failed to prevent later hitches is more informative than simply writing “I tried everything.”
How to interpret common outcomes
The overlay test helps
Keep the result as a configuration workaround and report the overlay state. It does not show that all reload stutters have the same cause, so continue to note whether the effect is mode-specific or tied to first exposure.
Changing the rendering API makes it worse
Revert it. The Vulkan report demonstrates why API changes must be treated as per-system experiments, not universal advice. Keep the original API in your report.
The hitch is limited to first exposure
Describe which effect appeared first and whether later encounters were smoother. This is the most relevant observation for a shader or asset-preloading investigation, but it remains a symptom pattern rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
The hitch occurs in every mode and on every reload
Prioritize a clean comparison of overlays, API or resolution, and broader system scope. This pattern is less suggestive of a one-time first-exposure event, but it still does not identify a particular cause.
The hitch occurs only in live matches
Record the contrast with bot matches and Explore NYC. Do not label it a network problem without additional evidence; the mode difference is an isolation result, not a diagnosis.
Nothing changes in controlled tests
Stop cycling through undocumented tweaks. Preserve your notes, capture the requested system details and seek help with a reproducible report. A negative comparison is useful evidence when it states exactly what was tested.
Source-backed context for current reports
The forum evidence is mixed and system-specific:
- The June 18, 2026 report about shader-compilation lag, edited June 23, describes first-seen ability effects and incomplete relief from cache clearing and file verification on one Windows 11 PC.
- The March 22, 2026 report about inconsistent FPS after updates includes an account of improved performance after disabling Discord overlay.
- The August 4, 2026 thread about a single-core bottleneck and 144-to-90 FPS drops illustrates that frame drops can involve broader CPU or engine behavior rather than a reload animation alone.
None of these reports supplies a controlled head-to-head benchmark, a universal frame-time improvement or a guaranteed setting. The official update likewise gives no numerical stutter reduction. Treat the reports as leads for comparison and documentation, not as instructions to apply unchanged to every PC.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
When to stop troubleshooting and report
Report the issue when it remains reproducible after you have compared the overlay state, at least one game mode, and one graphics variable without mixing changes. Include the exact trigger and your before-and-after observations. If the issue cannot be reproduced outside one live match, say so; uncertainty about the trigger is important information, not a reason to invent a fix.
You can also stop earlier if a test makes performance clearly worse. Revert to the saved baseline rather than stacking more changes. A clean baseline protects you from losing track of which configuration was actually stable.
The strongest current conclusion is limited: Deadlock has documented work aimed at preventing shader compilation during gameplay, while player reports identify overlays, first-time effects and system-specific rendering behavior as possible factors. A reload-animation hitch still requires case-by-case isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official fix for Deadlock stuttering during reload animations?
No universal fix has been confirmed. Valve’s February 25, 2025 Map Rework Update describes improved unit preloading to prevent shader compilation during gameplay, but it does not guarantee that every reload hitch is shader-related or resolved on every PC.
Could shader compilation cause a reload hitch?
It is one possibility when the hitch occurs the first time an ability or visual effect appears and becomes less frequent after later encounters. That pattern is based on an individual Windows 11 report and is not proof of the cause.
Should I disable Discord overlay?
It is a reasonable, reversible comparison. One player reported better performance after disabling it, but the result is anecdotal. Test the same reload sequence with only that overlay changed.
Should I switch Deadlock to Vulkan?
Do not treat Vulkan or any other API as a guaranteed fix. One forum report said Vulkan made stuttering worse. Change one rendering variable at a time and revert if the result deteriorates.
Should I clear my driver shader cache or verify game files?
Those steps are not established universal fixes. A cited player reported that clearing the AMD driver cache and verifying files did not prevent every later shader hitch. If you try them, record the result rather than assuming the diagnosis is confirmed.
How can I tell whether the problem is local or limited to live matches?
Repeat the same action in a bot match and Explore NYC, then compare it with a live match. A difference narrows the investigation but does not by itself prove a network cause.
What should I include in a Deadlock stutter report?
Include the game build, operating system, CPU, GPU, graphics API, resolution, relevant settings, overlay state, exact trigger, mode, first-exposure behavior, other-game comparison and every one-variable test. A Valve developer also requested a PerfView trace in one February 18, 2026 discussion; follow current forum instructions if a trace is requested.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Deadlock reload-animation stutter has no confirmed universal fix. Reproduce the pattern, compare overlays and game modes, test one graphics variable at a time, and check whether first-time effects are involved. Keep a baseline, document negative results, and report persistent cases with complete system details rather than relying on undocumented commands or unverified workarounds.
