The installation path depends on which storefront installed the game. A folder copied from a guide written for Steam may not exist in an Xbox app installation, and a custom library drive can make even a standard path different from the examples shown by a mod author.

On Steam, use the game’s library entry and choose the option to browse local files. That opens the installed directory selected for your Steam library, including libraries on another drive. On the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store version, use the app’s installation-management controls and the path described on the mod page. The AXIS instructions show an XboxGames-style location as an example, but the exact drive and parent folders can vary. Do not create a second copy of the game simply because a guide shows a different path.
Understand what a community mod is
Mods on community sites are user-created files. They are not official patches, and an author can replace an archive, remove an old version, or change installation instructions without notice. The current AXIS listing, for example, warns that an earlier Engine.ini release was quarantined and should not be treated as the current file. The official support material reviewed for E-Day documents accessibility controls and a technical-support route, but it does not establish a community-mod policy. It does not say that mods are allowed in multiplayer, exempt from anti-cheat checks, or immune from account consequences. No source reviewed provides a ban-safe guarantee.
If protecting an account or maintaining access to online modes is your priority, keep the game unmodified for online sessions. Check the current official support guidance for the specific mode and mod, and do not assume that a file which works at the main menu is approved for multiplayer. The safest practical separation is to test community files in an offline or otherwise noncompetitive context, then restore the original installation before joining online matches. Try those settings first when your goal is readability, color adjustment, captions, or sound balance. A built-in setting is easier to update and remove than a replacement file.

Classify the mod’s installation method
Read the selected page all the way through before extracting an archive. The examples currently documented for E-Day fall into materially different categories.

The useful comparison is not that one style is always safer. A PAK is usually easier to identify and remove as a single file, while a direct-copy package can touch existing files and therefore demands a more careful backup and inventory. Either method can become incompatible after an update, and either can create online risk that official pages have not resolved.
Step-by-step: installing the documented PAK style
The following sequence reflects the current AXIS instructions on Nexus Mods. Read that page again when you install because mod authors can change folder names, required files, or supported versions.
- Close E-Day completely. Exit to the desktop and make sure the game is not still running in the background. Do not replace files while the game is reading them.
- Open the current mod download. Use the page’s current file entry, not an older Engine.ini archive or a mirror with an unclear version. Scan the archive contents before copying anything.
- Extract to a temporary folder. Do not extract directly into the game directory. A temporary location lets you see whether the archive contains one PAK, documentation, optional files, or an unexpected folder hierarchy.
- Locate the real installation. Use Steam’s Browse local files command, or the Xbox PC app’s installation location. Confirm that the folder contains the E-Day files expected by the mod guide.
- Navigate to the PAK directory. Follow the documented path
FairlightConceptContentPaks. Inside it, look for a folder named~mods. - Create only the required folder. If
~modsis missing, create a folder with exactly that name insidePaks. Keep the tilde at the beginning and do not add a file extension. - Copy the supplied PAK. Place the mod’s
.pakfile in~mods. Keep the filename supplied by the author; do not rename it unless the current instructions explicitly say to do so. - Install one version. Remove older versions of the same mod before testing. The AXIS page specifically advises against duplicate versions and warns against stacking optimization packages that overlap during comparisons.
- Record what you changed. Write down the exact PAK filename, its version, the installation date, and the folder you used. A small text note outside the game directory makes later removal much less error-prone.
- Launch and test deliberately. Start with a short, repeatable test in a noncompetitive context. Look for crashes, missing textures, unusual loading, visual artifacts, and frame-pacing changes before deciding whether the mod helped.
If the game starts normally, that only shows that this installation worked in that test. It does not establish multiplayer compatibility, anti-cheat approval, or a performance gain.
Installing a direct-copy or replacement mod
Some packages do not use ~mods at all. Windows Central’s October 9, 2026 report describes a character replacement mod whose reported process is to download it from Nexus Mods, unzip it, locate the E-Day installation directory, copy the mod contents, and merge folders when Windows prompts. Those steps belong to that specific character mod.
- Read the package instructions first. Identify whether the archive expects files at the root of the game directory or inside a named subfolder. Do not guess based on the PAK example.
- Back up originals before replacing them. Copy the original files or folders to a separate backup location that is not inside the game directory. Preserve the folder structure and use a name that includes the game version and date.
- Extract somewhere temporary. Inspect the files and compare their paths with the author’s instructions. If the archive contains an extra top-level folder, copying that folder instead of its contents can create the wrong path.
- Copy and merge only where instructed. When Windows asks to merge folders, verify that the destination is the actual E-Day directory. A merge prompt in an unrelated folder is a reason to stop and recheck the path.
- Keep an inventory. Record every file that was added or replaced. If the author supplies a removal list, save it with your backup.
- Test with the game closed and offline. Confirm that the intended character or asset changes appear, then check a short unmodified comparison later.
A direct-copy mod can be harder to remove because several files may have been overwritten. If you cannot identify which originals were replaced, do not delete files at random. Restore the backup or use the storefront’s verification or repair function after removing the mod according to its instructions. Verification can restore altered files, but it may also remove community files, so keep your mod inventory first.
Backups, rollback, and clean removal
What to back up
For a PAK-only installation, the original game files normally remain untouched, but keep the downloaded archive and a note of the exact PAK filename. For a replacement mod, back up every original file the author says will be replaced. Store backups outside the installation directory so an update or repair operation does not overwrite them.
Do not overwrite a backup with a second version. Use folders such as E-Day-backup-before-character-mod and include the date. If you have limited storage, preserve the originals specifically identified by the instructions rather than making an unlabelled copy of the entire game.

Remove a PAK
Close E-Day, open the same FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods folder, and move or delete only the PAK belonging to that mod. Moving it to a quarantine folder is safer than permanent deletion while you diagnose a problem. Do not remove unrelated PAKs or empty the entire ~mods directory unless you intend to disable every mod there.
Revert a direct-copy mod
Follow the author’s removal list, restore the backed-up originals, and remove only files added by that package. If the package merged folders, work through the recorded inventory one path at a time. Launch once with the game unmodified before installing another version. This clean baseline tells you whether a later failure comes from the new package or from leftovers from the old one.
Use repair tools carefully
Steam and the Xbox PC app provide their own file-management and repair features. These tools are useful if original files were overwritten, but they are not a substitute for a mod-specific uninstall list. A repair can redownload official files and remove or overwrite community changes. Back up saves and preserve your mod notes before running it, and expect to reinstall any mod afterward only if its current instructions still support that game version.

Testing and troubleshooting
Change one package at a time. Install two optimization mods together and you will not know which one caused a regression. The AXIS instructions specifically recommend removing older versions and avoiding overlapping optimization packages while comparing results.
Crash on launch or during loading
Close the game and remove the newly installed PAK, or restore the originals for a direct-copy mod. Test the untouched game. If it works without the mod, check the author’s page for a compatible revision, required dependency, or changed installation path. Do not respond by deleting unrelated game files.
Visual artifacts, missing textures, or unusual loading
These symptoms can indicate an incompatible asset or a conflict with another package. Return to the clean baseline, then test the mod alone. If the issue disappears, compare the mod versions and remove overlapping packages. Keep screenshots and the exact game and mod versions when asking the author for help.
Worse frame pacing or no apparent improvement
Measure the same scene with the same graphics settings and drivers before and after the change. The AXIS author states that “AXIS is not a guaranteed FPS booster.” Results depend on the game version, hardware, settings, scene, drivers, and the limiting component; the outcome can be no change or a regression. A smoother menu or one favorable scene is not proof of a general gain.
Windows Central also noted that the author had not tested some performance mods it mentioned. Treat third-party performance claims as unverified for your own system. Do not buy a GPU, SSD, or other hardware solely because a mod page implies that a file will solve a bottleneck. After an E-Day update, assume a mod may need review. Close the game, remove or quarantine the mod, and confirm that the unmodified version launches. Then check the author’s current page for a revision that names the new game version. Reinstall only after the instructions still match your storefront and file layout.
