To play the documented English version of Pokémon Hyper Emerald, you must patch the untouched Chinese Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 bugfix 2 ROM with English + QoL patch 1.8, then open the patched .gba file in a Game Boy Advance emulator. A normal Pokémon Emerald ROM, another Hyper Emerald revision, or an already modified download will not work with this patch.
The project guide was updated October 7, 2026. Its checksums and release details can change, so confirm the current release information in the Nn-Exe repository before you begin.

What this installation guide covers
“Pokémon Hyper Emerald” is used for several related fan-project discussions. The concrete procedure here is for Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7, using the English + QoL patch identified by the Nn-Exe project as version 1.8. The patch targets the original Chinese “bugfix 2” release, whose game code is BPEE.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The underlying hack is described by its guide as a Chinese Pokémon Emerald ROM hack associated with Destvol, Satochu, Popy, Potato, Hurricane, Feiyixiang and other contributors. Its v5.7 release is presented as a finished game containing the Hoenn adventure, a Sinnoh post-game, additional species and mechanics, extra quests, and selectable difficulty modes. Those descriptions come from the project documentation rather than an independent review.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
The English patch is a translation and quality-of-life modification layered on that specific hack. It is not a patch for Nintendo’s unmodified Pokémon Emerald game, and it is not interchangeable with other Hyper Emerald revisions or older English translations.
What you need before patching
- An untouched copy of
Hyper EMR LA v5.7 bugfix 2.gbafrom the hack’s original release source. The project and guide do not distribute ROM files, and the original release location has not been independently verified here. - The Nn-Exe patch repository containing
tools/romdiff.pyandrelease/hyper-emerald-en-qol.hpatch. - Python 3. The documented patch process needs no additional Python packages.
- A compatible GBA emulator. The project uses mGBA as its reference emulator and also documents RetroArch with the mGBA core, standalone mGBA on Android, and mGBA 0.10.x on a homebrew Switch.
- A separate backup location for any existing battery save file. Keep the original save untouched while testing the patched build.
- A way to calculate a SHA-1 hash so you can verify that the input and output files are the expected builds.
No physical cartridge, handheld, controller, or other purchase is required by the documented setup. The ROM, patch, Python script, and emulator are software files. Make sure your use of ROM material complies with the law where you live; the project documentation does not settle jurisdiction-specific copyright or distribution questions.
Use the exact base ROM
The patcher is deliberately strict. It checks the input bytes before applying the diff, so a rejection normally means the file is not the required original build or has already been changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Input or revision | Works with English + QoL patch 1.8? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Hyper EMR LA v5.7 bugfix 2.gba, untouched |
Yes | This is the documented target build. |
| Vanilla Pokémon Emerald | No | The patch is made for the Hyper Emerald ROM hack, not the original game. |
| Hyper Emerald v5.5 | No | Different revision. |
| Hyper Emerald v5.6 | No | Different revision. |
| Hyper Emerald v5.7 without the required bugfix | No | The patch expects the “bugfix 2” build. |
| Hyper Emerald v5.7 bugfix 1 | No | Different bugfix revision. |
| Older community English translation | No | Already translated or modified data does not match the expected input. |
| An unofficial prepatched English ROM | No supported path | It may contain a different revision or modifications that fail the input check. |
Verify the filename, size, and hash
The project’s documented base file is exactly 33,554,432 bytes (32 MiB) and has this SHA-1 value:
f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9
The filename is useful for the command that follows, but the size and hash are the meaningful identity checks. A file with the right name but a different hash is not the expected input.
Rank #2
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
On Windows PowerShell, you can calculate the hash with:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA1 "Hyper EMR LA v5.7 bugfix 2.gba"
On macOS or Linux, a typical built-in command is:
shasum -a 1 "Hyper EMR LA v5.7 bugfix 2.gba"
Compare the result character for character. If the size or SHA-1 differs, stop and obtain an untouched copy of the required bugfix 2 release rather than trying to force the patch.
Apply the English + QoL patch
Place the original ROM, the downloaded patch repository, and your terminal or command prompt in locations that are easy to identify. The documented command is:
python tools/romdiff.py apply "Hyper EMR LA v5.7 bugfix 2.gba" release/hyper-emerald-en-qol.hpatch "Hyper Emerald v5.7 EN+QoL.gba"
- Open a terminal in the root of the patch repository, the folder that contains the
toolsandreleasedirectories. - Confirm that Python 3 is available. If your system uses a separate executable name, invoke that Python 3 command while keeping the script arguments unchanged.
- Run the command exactly as shown, including the quotation marks around filenames with spaces.
- Wait for
romdiff.pyto validate the source, apply the diff, and verify the generated output. - Do not overwrite the original Chinese ROM. Keeping it preserves a known-good source for troubleshooting or future patch releases.
The script’s input check is a safeguard, not an obstacle to bypass. If it reports that the ROM is not the expected original, changing the filename or removing the check will not make the resulting file a supported build.
Verify the generated file
For patch 1.8 as identified by the project’s October 7, 2026 documentation, the expected output is Hyper Emerald v5.7 EN+QoL.gba with SHA-1:

Calculate the output hash with the same PowerShell or shasum method and compare it with that value. The checksum belongs to that specific release; if the repository has published a newer patch, use the newer release’s own documented checksum instead of assuming the older value still applies.
Choose and configure an emulator
The project identifies mGBA as its reference emulator and says the patch was tested there. Other choices may work, but the following compatibility notes are project-reported rather than independent testing.
| Emulator setup | Documented platform or use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone mGBA | Desktop GBA emulation | The guide’s reference environment. |
| RetroArch with the mGBA core | Systems supported by RetroArch | Select the mGBA core when launching the patched file. |
| Standalone mGBA | Android | The guide mentions Android support for mGBA. |
| mGBA 0.10.x | Homebrew Nintendo Switch | The guide specifically cites the 0.10.x series in this context. |
| Another GBA emulator | Other desktop or mobile platforms | May run the file, but the project’s explicit reference testing is with mGBA. |
Open the patched game
- Install or launch the emulator you selected.
- Use its normal “Open ROM,” “Load game,” or equivalent file-browser command.
- Select
Hyper Emerald v5.7 EN+QoL.gba, not the untouched Chinese source, when you want the English/QoL build. - Start a new game or load a compatible battery save after confirming that the title and gameplay begin normally.
Emulator menu labels differ by platform, so the project’s important requirement is the file you load, not a particular skin, controller layout, or display filter.
Save files: battery saves versus save states
Back up the emulator’s battery save before changing ROM files. The documented English/QoL build can carry a battery save from the original Chinese hack, but save states are tied to the exact ROM build and do not transfer reliably between different revisions.
If an existing save is not detected
- Close the emulator before renaming or replacing files.
- Confirm that the battery save has the same base filename as the ROM the emulator is opening. For example, a ROM named
Hyper Emerald v5.7 EN+QoL.gbanormally needs the matching save basename used by your emulator. - Keep the save extension and location expected by your emulator; do not convert a save state into a battery save.
- Reopen the patched ROM and check the load-game menu.
- If the save disappears after the Pokémon League, configure the emulator’s save type as Flash 128K as recommended by the project guide, then test with a backup copy.
Do not delete the original save while diagnosing the problem. A save that works in the Chinese build should be preserved separately even after you confirm that the English build loads it.

Why old save states can mislead you
A save state records emulator memory for a particular ROM image. Loading one created from another revision can produce a crash, incorrect graphics, or behavior that looks like a patch defect. Treat a state made on a different build as unusable for compatibility testing; use the in-game battery save instead.
What to expect from the patched game
Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 is presented as a large ROM hack rather than a short translation demo. The documented feature set includes the Hoenn story, a Sinnoh post-game, additional mechanics and species, extra quests, and difficulty modes. The English/QoL patch changes language and quality-of-life behavior on top of that content; it does not turn the project into vanilla Pokémon Emerald.
The English patch’s FAQ says its testing did not cover every forty-plus-hour playthrough. Deep post-game sections may therefore contain untranslated text or other issues even when the patch applied correctly and the emulator is compatible. An untranslated line is not, by itself, evidence that you used the wrong ROM.

“This is not the expected original ROM”
- Recheck that the file is the Chinese v5.7 “bugfix 2” release.
- Compare its size with 33,554,432 bytes.
- Compare its SHA-1 with
f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9. - Remove any older translation, prior patch, trim operation, or other modification from the input path.
- Do not substitute vanilla Emerald, v5.5, v5.6, v5.7 without the required bugfix, bugfix 1, or a prepatched download.
The patcher’s rejection generally identifies a source-build mismatch. It is not a prompt to continue with an unverified file.
The command cannot find Python or the script
- Run the command from the repository’s root so that
tools/romdiff.pyandrelease/hyper-emerald-en-qol.hpatchresolve to real files. - Confirm that Python 3 is installed and invoke the executable name provided by your operating system.
- Check spelling, capitalization, and quotation marks in both ROM filenames.
- Do not add packages unless a future project release explicitly changes its requirements; the documented patch process needs no extra packages.
The output does not match the expected hash
First confirm that you used the intended patch file and an untouched base. Then check whether the repository has released a newer patch than version 1.8; the expected checksum is release-specific. A mismatch means you should not treat the output as verified until the current release documentation explains the new value.
Best Value
- Live the life of a Pokémon Trainer in the streets of Lumiose City!
- For the first time in the Pokémon RPG series, command your Pokémon in real-time battles
- Use the power of Mega Evolution in battle and take on rampaging Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon
- Compete in the Z-A Royale each night to test your skills and try to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer
- Visit shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free—all centered around Prism Tower
The patched game will not boot
- Open the output file, not the source ROM or a partially created file.
- Recalculate the output SHA-1.
- Try the project’s reference emulator, mGBA, before diagnosing another emulator.
- Keep the original ROM and output in separate folders to avoid selecting the wrong file.
- Restore a clean battery save or start a temporary new game to determine whether the problem is the ROM or a save state.
The game crashes while catching a Pokémon with a Master Ball
The project FAQ lists crashes involving certain Pokémon caught with a Master Ball. Save before attempting the encounter and, where practical, use another ball. Preserve a backup of the .sav so that a crash does not destroy your only progress.
The game crashes or shows odd behavior after an update
Make a copy of the battery save, avoid loading old save states, and test the current ROM from an in-game save. Save-state behavior from an earlier build can produce misleading results after a version change.
Text is untranslated late in the adventure
The patch authors caution that they did not test every forty-plus-hour playthrough. Untranslated or otherwise imperfect content in deep post-game areas can remain even when the correct source ROM, patch, checksum, and emulator are being used.
Updating safely when a new patch appears
- Read the repository’s current release notes and identify the new patch version, required base build, command, and output checksum.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original bugfix 2 ROM and a dated backup of every battery save.
- Patch into a new output filename rather than overwriting the version you are currently playing.
- Verify the new output hash before opening it.
- Test the new ROM with a copy of the battery save. Keep the previous ROM and save available until you know the new build behaves correctly.
The guide and FAQ identify English + QoL patch 1.8 as released October 7, 2026. That date is a version marker, not a guarantee that it remains current, so check the project’s release page whenever you install or upgrade.
Distribution and legal cautions
The project and guide state that they do not distribute ROMs. Obtain the original release through a legitimate source you are entitled to use, and do not rely on unverified ROM mirrors or assume that a download labeled “English” is the required bugfix 2 input. The technical instructions above explain how to patch a file you lawfully possess; they do not determine the copyright status of the underlying game or hack in your country.
