On Steam Deck, the so-called “DLSS 3.7 mod” is HelixSR, an unofficial per-game upscaler. It can run NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E super-resolution network on supported AMD hardware through a Direct3D 12 compute-shader path, but it does not add DLSS frame generation and is not a Valve or NVIDIA feature. Install it only through the project’s current release, let its setup script choose a route for each game, and use the included uninstaller to undo the changes.
The safest workflow is deliberately conservative: verify the game and API are eligible, close the game before patching, keep the extracted HelixSR folder, record the setup summary, and avoid manually deleting DLLs. The project documents Linux/Proton use, but its own development testing is based on a different AMD system, so compatibility on a particular Deck and title remains conditional.

What the Steam Deck “DLSS 3.7 mod” actually is
HelixSR describes itself as a drop-in FSR 3.1 upscaler that executes NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network on AMD GPUs. It uses Direct3D 12 compute shaders and does not require NVIDIA Tensor Cores, an NVIDIA driver, CUDA, or ROCm. The project is independent and unofficial; its README says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA, AMD, or the OptiScaler project. Read the current documentation and releases at the official HelixSR repository before downloading anything.

“DLSS 3.7” is therefore an informal description of the network files and mod concept, not an official Steam Deck feature or a Valve-supported compatibility layer. HelixSR supplies super resolution only. It does not provide DLSS frame generation, Reflex, or a complete NVIDIA feature stack. A game must still render through a supported path, and the result can vary with its engine, Proton version, GPU driver, and existing mods.

Check compatibility before changing a game
Do these checks first. They prevent the most common unsafe installation attempts and give you a recovery plan if a title fails to start.
- Graphics API: the project lists Direct3D 12 as a requirement. A DirectX 11, Vulkan-only, or otherwise unsupported rendering path is not automatically converted by HelixSR.
- GPU generation: the stated requirement is AMD RDNA 1 or newer. Vega GPUs are unsupported. A Steam Deck uses AMD graphics, but the repository does not claim that every Deck model, docked configuration, or driver combination has been validated.
- Proton context: the Deck procedure is a Linux/Proton setup. The project’s development and testing basis is an AMD BC-250 with Linux/Mesa RADV, and the README explicitly says other GPUs and Windows are not tested by the project. Treat a working report from another machine as an indication, not a guarantee.
- Game hooks: the installer presents only routes it considers available for an individual title. A game that exposes FSR 3.1 may receive a different option from one that exposes DLSS, XeSS, or an earlier FSR interface.
- Anti-cheat and injected DLLs: do not use the experimental direct DLSS-loader route with anti-cheat games. Also check for ReShade or another mod that places
dxgi.dllbeside the executable; the HelixSR README warns against combining those arrangements. - Backups and updates: keep the extracted HelixSR directory in a stable location. The setup creates backups and downloads that its uninstaller may need. If Steam later verifies or replaces a game, expect to check whether the mod needs to be removed and reapplied.
Compatibility is a per-game question, not a Deck-wide switch. Do not patch a title while it is running, and do not assume that selecting the same option for every game is safe.
How the available installation routes differ
HelixSR’s setup can offer more than one route. The letters below describe the choices documented by the project; the installer hides choices it does not consider applicable to the selected game.

The default choice shown when you press Enter can vary by game. Read the prompt instead of relying on a remembered key. The final setup summary tells you which upscaler to select in the game; that summary is the authority for the patched title.
Install HelixSR on Steam Deck, step by step
1. Download the current official release
Open the HelixSR repository and use its current release, not an old mirror or an executable copied from someone else. The repository showed version 1.8.1 at the time of the documented procedure, but releases can change. Check the release notes and README for the current Linux/Proton instructions before extracting the archive.
Extract the archive into a folder you intend to keep, such as a dedicated directory in your home folder. Do not extract it into a temporary download directory that you routinely empty. Keeping the folder intact preserves the setup script, backups, and optional uninstall files.
2. Close every affected game
Exit the game completely before running setup. Also close a launcher or process that may keep the game’s files open. Patching while a title is running can leave a partially replaced DLL or cause the running process to continue using an old copy.
3. Start the Linux setup script
Open a terminal in the extracted HelixSR folder and run:
./helixsr-setup.shThe README also documents a graphical alternative: double-click the script and choose “Run in terminal.” If the terminal reports that the file is not executable, use the project’s documented permissions guidance rather than downloading a replacement script. Keep the terminal open so you can read every prompt and the final summary.
4. Approve the local DLSS download and build
On its first run, setup asks whether it may download NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL and then builds the network locally. The project says its downloads are pinned to versions and checked with SHA-256. Read the prompt and approve it only if you understand that the resulting game DLLs contain NVIDIA’s network. HelixSR’s instructions say those files are intended for your own PC and must not be uploaded or shared. That is a project usage instruction, not a guarantee that the process has been independently security-audited.
5. Choose a route for each detected game
The setup scans for games it can handle and presents a per-game choice. The documented letters are f for direct FSR replacement, o for the OptiScaler route, and n to skip. Only choices that apply to that title are displayed. Enter may select a game-specific default, so read the whole line before accepting it.

6. Record the final summary
Before closing the terminal, read the summary for each game. It should identify the route installed and the in-game upscaler to select. Save a screenshot or text note with the game name, route, and date. This avoids the common mistake of installing the FSR route and then enabling DLSS, or installing OptiScaler and leaving the game on FSR.
7. Select the matching upscaler in the game
Launch the game only after setup finishes. In its graphics or upscaling menu:
- For the f route, choose the game’s AMD FSR option. Use the quality mode you normally want, then apply the setting and restart the game if it requests one.
- For the o route, choose DLSS. HelixSR is being reached through OptiScaler’s FSR backend even though the visible game menu says DLSS.
- For an experimental direct loader, follow the title-specific instructions from the project rather than inferring a setting from another route.
If the game offers a separate frame-generation toggle, leave it off unless you have an independent, compatible implementation. HelixSR itself does not add DLSS frame generation.
Verify the result without guessing
Start with a low-risk test: load a save or area where you can compare image stability, menus, and camera movement. Confirm that the game reaches gameplay, that the selected upscaler remains enabled after restarting, and that no anti-cheat warning appears. A successful launch alone does not prove that the intended network is active, so use the game’s own upscaling status or the project’s documented diagnostics when available.

Watch for symptoms that indicate a route or conflict problem:
- Immediate crash or black screen: exit the game, do not delete random DLLs, and use setup’s remove option for that title. Then retry without the mod or choose another route only if the installer offers one.
- Upscaler missing from the menu: you may have selected a route that expects a different native option. Re-read the final summary; FSR replacement requires the game’s FSR entry, while OptiScaler requires its DLSS entry.
- Game launches but rendering is broken: check for ReShade or another adjacent
dxgi.dll, and remove conflicting modifications through their own documented uninstallers before testing HelixSR again. - Anti-cheat refusal: stop using the experimental direct loader. Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat checks; restore the game with HelixSR’s uninstaller and use an unmodified installation.
- Steam update overwrote the change: close the game and rerun the current setup only after confirming that the title is still supported. Keep the previous backup until you have verified the new patch.
Do not interpret a smoother menu or a higher on-screen counter as a guaranteed whole-game performance gain. The project’s published timings are GPU time for the upscaling pass on an AMD BC-250 at 2000 MHz, not total frame rates and not Steam Deck benchmark results. No independent Steam Deck benchmark is established by the cited project material.

1. Close the game and keep the HelixSR folder
Exit the game and any launcher process that may hold its files. Locate the same extracted HelixSR directory used for installation. The uninstaller is designed to use the backups created by setup, so do not move or delete that directory first.
2. Run the project uninstaller
Open a terminal in the folder and run:
./helixsr-uninstall.shChoose the games to restore when prompted. For a game you added manually, pass that game’s directory to the uninstaller as described in the project README. Follow the displayed path carefully; selecting the wrong directory can restore the wrong installation.

3. Let the script restore the previous files
The maintainer says the uninstaller restores files that setup replaced to their prior state. It can also offer to delete the built HelixSR DLL and setup downloads. Read those choices before accepting them. If you may reinstall later, retaining the downloaded build can avoid another download; if you are finished, allowing the script to remove those generated files is the cleanest option.

4. Verify the game in Steam
Launch the game with its original upscaler setting. If Steam reports missing or changed files, use the client’s normal file-verification feature. Do not jump directly to a SteamOS reinstall for ordinary mod removal. Steam Support’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guidance concerns broader system recovery, not the normal HelixSR uninstall path.
If the game is already broken
Run ./helixsr-setup.sh again and select the setup’s remove option for the affected game, as the README recommends. This gives the project a chance to find its own backup records. Avoid deleting files by filename guesswork: a DLL with a familiar name may belong to the game, Proton, OptiScaler, or another mod, and removing it manually can make recovery harder.
Special warnings for the experimental direct DLSS route
The direct loader is not an equal alternative to the primary FSR replacement and OptiScaler choices. The project describes it as experimental, Linux/Proton-only, and tested in only a few games. Use it only when the current documentation explicitly identifies your title and explains the required setting.
- Do not use it with anti-cheat games.
- Do not combine it with OptiScaler.
- Do not combine it with ReShade or another mod that installs
dxgi.dllbeside the game executable. - Expect a higher chance of launch failures and a narrower recovery path than with the documented primary routes.
- Remove it with HelixSR’s own uninstaller before trying another injection method.
Files, downloads, and personal-use limits
HelixSR’s README says setup asks before downloading NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL, pins downloads to versions, and checks them with SHA-256 before building locally. The resulting game DLLs contain NVIDIA’s network. The maintainer instructs users to keep those files for their own PC and not upload or share them. Follow that instruction when copying backups, troubleshooting with friends, or posting logs; share error messages and paths without distributing the generated binaries.
These statements describe the project’s documented workflow. They are not a substitute for reviewing the release source, checking hashes yourself, or evaluating whether a particular game’s terms permit modifications. If you are uncomfortable with locally generated proprietary network files, leave the game unmodified.
What to expect on a Steam Deck
HelixSR can reduce the internal rendering resolution and reconstruct an image through the selected game path, but the cost and benefit depend on the title. The repository’s BC-250 timings measure only the upscaling pass at a specified 2000 MHz GPU clock. They do not predict your Deck’s frame rate, battery draw, fan noise, frametime consistency, or image quality.
Evaluate one title at a time. Compare the same scene with the same resolution, quality mode, refresh rate, and Proton version. If frametimes worsen, text shimmers, or input feels less consistent, uninstall rather than assuming a higher nominal frame counter is an improvement. Keep a known-good, unmodified configuration for games you play online or competitively.
Bottom line for a safe install
Use the current release from the HelixSR repository, close the game, let the script present its per-game choices, and select the in-game upscaler named in the final summary. Remember that HelixSR is unofficial super resolution—not DLSS frame generation—and that Steam Deck compatibility is conditional. When finished, run ./helixsr-uninstall.sh for the affected game and allow it to restore its backups; never remove DLLs by guesswork.
